Book Description
This monograph describes the theoretical bases and experimental prerequisites for methods such as spin fluorescence, triplet, Mössbauer, photochromic and electron-density labeling, including the procedures used to obtain specifically modified proteins, enzymes, biomembranes, nucleic acids, and other biological molecules. The fundamentals of the physical theory behind each technique is explained and details are given of how to interpret the experimental data obtained. Special sections deal with critical reviews of recent data on the structure, molecular dynamics and conformational transitions of biological molecules. Each section concludes with a discussion of the results obtained from these techniques in connection with various problems of enzyme catalysis, electron transfer, molecular biophysics and molecular biology. The uses that labeling techniques can be put to for the investigation of whole cells and tissues are also discussed.

Opinionated, indeed! But with so many breathtaking hikes in Washington State's North Cascades, it's a pleasure to find a guidebook that attempts to separate the magnificent from the merely splendid. With craggy, glacier-clad peaks, magnificent ancient forest, and towering volcanoes, this remote region offers outdoors enthusiasts a seemingly endless variety of hiking and backpacking options. Many hikers consider the North Cascades--also known as the American Alps--the jewels of North America's mountain ranges. Don't Waste Your Time in the North Cascades rates the best trails for experiencing such a diverse wilderness--and also mentions which trails to veer away from at all costs. Occasionally the book's tone can be grumbling, but the authors are trying to do hikers a service; when it comes to crowded trails and uninspired treks, a little grumbling is OK if it serves as ample warning.

Right on the Money.......2007-08-11
I have used many, many guide books for hiking in various regions. I loved this book about the north cascades better than any I have used. The authors rating system was right on the money. We did four of the hikes listed as premier and they delivered everything promised. If I was going to spend more time in the north cascades, I would use this book exclusively. I particularly found this author's reviews of the hikes we did to be much more useful than the other guides published and available through Amazon. This author is honest in every way. I wanted to send a thank you note, given our marvelous experience, but I figured that this review was worth even more.
Temporary North Cascadian.......2007-05-17
With limited time to explore the North Cascades I needed some guidance. I own this book, as well as what I suspect is the most popular hiking book for this area - 100 Hikes in the North Cascades. Though that book does provide color pictures, better maps, and some other features missing from Don't Waste Your Time, it just can't compare. If I only had that book, I would be left scratching my head on a sunny summer day, wondering where to head to. Instead, I strike out with confidence knowing that each "Premier" or "Outstanding" hike will leave me with stunning images etched into my memory for a lifetime.
Don't Waste Your Time In The North Cascades has been priceless in my opinion. I've set a goal to do all the "Premier" dayhikes and haven't been disappointed yet. What's more, the introduction to each hike is written so well that anytime I started getting cabin fever during the winter I'd pull out this book and read some hike reviews. It always left me excited for the coming good weather and marvelous hikes. The lack of good maps hasn't been a problem, as their written instructions have always gotten me to the viewpoint without getting lost. I love the fact that the book has a shoulder season section, and am using that section a lot right now as I wait for the high viewpoints to melt out. This book really combines the best of three guidebooks into one, with it's dayhiking, backpacking, and shoulder season sections.
Overall, I feel like this book along with adopting a dog are the best investments I've made since moving to the North Cascades.
Fantastic guidebook.......2006-07-01
The Don't Waste Your time series of guide books is incredible. After an awesome trip to the North Cascades, I trusted Kathy & Craig with my next vacation, and chose to go to the Canadian Rockies.
With the help of this book, I had little trouble getting to as many fantastic places as I could in my time up in the North Cascades. You could choose another book, but why waste the time when these guys have done all the grunt work for you! Besides, the books are fun to read and give you an awesome idea of what to expect.
Trust me, any hike rated 5 boots is going to amaze you...
Only gripe on the book is the lack of color pictures in this edition. Otherwise it'd be 5 stars.
I wish more trail guides followed this model.......2005-11-04
Your reaction to this book will depend upon what you're looking for in a trail guide.
The descriptions are definitely opinionated and the prose can sometimes be overwrought; but the Copelands are up-front about their biases and how they're making their judgments. When time is limited, I find it incredibly valuable to have a set of opinions about which hikes to think about doing.
It's definitely not your standard "just the facts" trail guide, but I wouldn't want it any other way. There are too many trail guides that only list driving directions and a factual trail description, with no way to discern what makes a hike special.
One shortcoming to note: there are not even rudimentary maps, just references to the appropriate topo. Personally I feel that the honest opinions on which hikes are truly stellar--and why--more than make up for this lack.
Great Book!.......2005-09-07
I loved this book. It has all the nitty-gritty instructions for finding the trail heads and what to expect enroute. It is opionated and that is very helpful in deciding on an itinerary. Day-hikes and backpacking trips are separately listed and individually rated. Just an excellent source of information.

A very BASIC Visual Guide to Lock Picking.......2006-08-19
It's a very simple book and a short one too. Don't spect to learn a lot of thinks from this book. If you are only looking for an introduction in lock picking and how a lock works, then this book is fine for you. Maybe you can get a more complete book with no more money.
An excellent illustrated guide!.......2005-12-25
I first tried just borowing that mit guide from a friend. It was interesting reading, but kinda left me confused. So, I decided get some actual books including this Visual Guide. It was so refreshing to find one that so clearly explained everything to me. I had a lot of success at home, though havn't been able to do the advanced locks yet. Beginners should just start here and save yourself a lot of trouble. When it comes to lock picking, this book was really complete and I thought the illustrations helped everything make sense.
Too expensive for what it gives.......2004-11-07
I was really curious about this book, but what a delusion when it was in my mailbox. Just some pretty 3d drawings and nothing more. Save your money and buy the books of Steven Hampton or, even better, find out the MIT guide.
NOT a stand-alone book and $20 too expensive.......2004-01-15
This isn't really a stand alone book. It would have been much better as part of another book such as "How To Open Locks With Improvised Tools"
The illustrations are good, but not that good and the text is lacking in depth.
It's certainly NOT worth $24.95. Get it from the library and use it as a reference while reading another book on locks.
Too small, Too expensive.......2003-07-15
This book has visual helps, but you would expect more and better ones for the price. You can likely learn to pick locks, but the price is too high for the quality and number of the illustrations and the size of the book. Something more should have been included in the way of where the lock picks and other materials can be purchased. This small, expensive book was disappointing to me.

Surfing the Sea of Words.......2007-10-18
An illuminating volume to have on hand as you read the Patrick O'Brian Series. Provides back story and details of those times, along with maps and diagrams. Nauticle terminanolgy decoded. Highly reccomend, could only wish for more diagrams.
A need to have.......2007-10-05
This book is a fundamental reading for those who love O'Brian books and want to make the most of of them.
A couple more pictures would have helped, but it gives you all you need to know to enhance your reading experience
Not that impressed with this book.......2007-10-02
I was fairly disappointed with this book, given some of the rave reviews I've read about it. In a consequtive fashion, several of the phrases I looked up weren't in there, to the point where I gave up using it and am just reading the books.
Perhaps it's for the best though, the book flows better without interuption, if at the expense of full understanding. I wouldn't recommend buying this book. It doesn't answer what you need it for -- terms that aren't used anymore, but aren't in the dictionary either.
This is a great book, however.......2007-09-25
It still needs expansion; in particular with regard to the dialect of the times to make it complete, and there remain nautical terms that need definitions. I suppose that I need to visit the website or see if there is a method of placing requests for additional words or terms.
Still, I feel that it is a must buy if one plans to read the entire series.
Sea of Words.......2007-09-14
This is a must have book when reading the series as it explains many of the unfamiliar terms. Highly recommend you get it and use it when you are unfamiliar with things talked about in the books. Also recommend Harbors and High Seas: 3rd Edition by the same authors. This will show you where the ships went on Jack's voyages.

O'Brian Companion.......2007-10-05
I am more than 1.2 way through the Patrick O'Brian / Jack Aubury series and being a sailor have enjoyed the books very much. This companion allows an even deeper appreciation for the series as it allows me to visualize the places where the historical fiction is taking place.
harbors and high seas.......2007-09-14
This is a must have book when reading the Aubrey-Maturin series. It brings to life the voyages through maps and synopses of each place the ships traveled. Also it explains that some of the locations are fictional but places them in likely locations. I really enjoyed this book and wish I had it when i began reading the series. You have to get it.
Good companion book.......2007-08-22
A great companion book to the O'Brian "Master and Commander" Series. It's nice to see the maps of the places described in the books. It was especially helpful in being able to picture fight scenes and ships positioning. If you want to be able to visualize what the author wants you to see, buy this book.
For the true O'Brien aficionado's out there . . .......2006-06-30
A wonderfully illustrated geographical guide to the complete series. Great for both historians and the geographically-challenged, this book enhances the enjoyment of each novel. While King tries hard to avoid any 'spoilers' one has to be careful in looking at the route plots too early in each novel lest you see unexpected developments revealed - or, as Jack Aubrey would say, you'll be brought by the lee like a true lubber! Enjoy.
a rather weak effort.......2005-12-21
I dislike rambling Amazon user reviews, and so I'll keep this short; Mr. King's book is reasonably good in terms of maps, though one might wish that a few more were added. The introductory material is somewhat interesting, if a bit simplistic. The prose leaves something to be desired; I found myself constantly irritated by particularly inept turns of phrase.
All of this could be forgiven, though, if it were not for the most disappointing aspect --- which is the reason I'm writing this review --- namely, King's summaries of the novels. These summaries were one of the main reasons I decided to buy the book. I had read the first 14 O'Brian novels over the course of three months, earlier this year, but a fall semester of full-time graduate studies understandably pulled me away from the adventures; I found that the passage of time had left the exact order of events a bit hazy, and so I was looking forward to reading summaries of the first 14 installments. King's summaries are truly terrible; he usually recounts only the battles in any given book, if that much, and rarely mentions anything else of note (Diana Villiers and Sophie Aubrey are mentioned only twice each, in passing; Wray is mentioned once). Also, in order to 'avoid spoiling the endings,' he has left out the most important plot points of each novel; in certain cases he will leave out the entire final third of a plot, because to summarize that aspect of the novel would be to 'give away the ending,' which seems to me extremely idiotic if one's stated goal is to provide summaries of the novels (and not, say, a book review, in which one wouldn't want to give away the ending).

Book Description
A handsomely bound omnibus edition of Patrick O'Brian's seafaring classics, including three chapters of the unfinished twenty-first novel.
These five volumes, beautifully produced and boxed, contain over 7,000 pages of what has often been described as a single, continuous narrative. They are a perfect tribute to such a literary achievement, and a perfect gift for the serious O'Brian enthusiast.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent novels fair presentation.......2007-09-10
The Patrick O-Brien series is well written and facinating to read. The author spends a lot of effort explaining the context and that is very informative.
This printing is condensed to 5 volumes and they are smaller that I would like and the pages are very thin. If you don't have excellent eyesight I'd suggest a larger format.
Patrick O'Brian Stars !.......2007-09-03
This reprint of the Aubrey/Maturin series is really fabulous.
Although an enthusiastic reader of this series, I have never been able to collect every volume, let alone read them in sequence. This set of five volumes is exceptional value for money.
Early reviewers commented that there were quality problems with the books. Please don't let this stop your purchase - the books are of good quality with but few spelling or terminology errors and most readers will not object to this given the five volume set gives this outstanding opportunity to read the complete works as desired.
The real problem with this set of volumes is finding the time to read avidly..........
Really good books!.......2007-08-22
If you want to read the best fictional series of nautical adventures ever written, this is it. You fall in love with Jack and Stephen as they sail around the world, taking on the French, Spanish, and American navies in these 21 books. They are two of the best characters ever written!
The intelligence and humor displayed by Patrick O'Brien in every single book is an enormous achievement, to say nothing of the accuracy of details compiled in these books. I wanted the stories to go on and on.
A great gift set.......2007-07-31
This will surely please anyone on who likes to read on your gift list (assuming they don't already have it). It's meant to be read more than once, and the character development is unrivaled. The movie that was recently made doesn't do the books justice. I was never interested in naval history or the time of the Napoleonic wars, but this drew me in to that world.
Prepare to abandon everything else for 6510 pages.......2007-06-27
A number of Amazon reviewers have highlighted the editorial deficiencies of this edition of O'Brian's Maturin/Aubrey novels (arguably, reversing the normal order from "Aubrey/Maturin" more accurately reflects the balance of the characters). However, potential readers should not let this put them off. If you think you might like these books, you will, so get your hands on them as quickly as you can. You will soon become immersed in Stephen and Jack's world, and feel a great sense of loss when eventually you must leave it, at the unfinished sentence on the last page of "21".
That addictive potential, however, does warrant one caveat. Most reviewers recognise that the Maturin/Aubrey novels constitute one long narrative. Certainly, O'Brian thought of it that way. They are really instalments in one long story. As is only natural, however, O'Brian never factored his own mortality into the process. The result is an inevitable frustration at the end of the novels - not the end of the story, mind you - the characters are in the prime of their lives, primed for yet another adventure, with numerous unresolved sub-narratives. O'Brian clearly intended to keep writing until - well, until he dropped, which is literally what happened. The result is that the reader will experience a bittersweet frustration as the end draws near, in that there is no "resolution" of the overall story in the dramatic sense.
Indeed, so vivid are the stories that one convinces one's self that things kept right on happening to Jack and Stephen; it is just that O'Brian passed way before he could record those future events - sort of a nautical JRR Tolkein. And that, to me, is the greatest evidence of the power of these novels.
