Beware the description of this book.......2001-07-05
This is a supplement to my earlier review. Note that the description of American Insects, by Arnett,... is based on the first edition, in which "Every order, family, and genus is conveniently numbered and indexed" and you could "quickly determine the taxonomic position of any species, genus, or higher taxon of insect known to occur in America and Canada." This is not the case in the second edition. You can look up major genera only.
Subfamilies are listed under an entry for the family, not under the subfamily name, which means you _can't_ quickly determine their taxonomic positions. You have to know the taxonomic position in order to look up the subfamilies. This defeats one major purpose of the book, and renders it not very usable.
Whoever provided the text for the book description apparently just carried it over from the previous edition, without taking into account the changes in the new edition. This isn't by a long stretch the same book.
Once excellent book devalued.......2001-04-28
As a naturalist and amateur entomologist, I found the first edition of this book especially useful for looking up unfamiliar genera and species of insects, to find out where they fit in the scheme of insect taxonomy.
Unfortunately, CRC Press, the publisher of the second edition, has cut corners by reducing the size of the index from 128 pages for 714 pages of text in the first edition to 57 pages for 931 pages of text in the second edition. This was accomplished by eliminating all but the major genera from the index. In my opinion, this seriously diminishes the value of the book. The best information in the world is useless if you can't access it efficiently. A book like this lives or dies by the quality of its index.
After purchasing the book in early January, 2001 and quickly discovering the problem, I wrote to the publisher to complain and to ask that they make available a complete index as a supplement. I have yet to receive a response from them. The book's author, Ross Arnett, was upset when the publisher of the first edition inadvertently left out the photo captions in proof and wouldn't restore them. I have to think he is spinning in his grave over the gutting of the index in the second edition, a much more serious affair.
I'd love to be able to recommend the second edition of this book. However, unless the publisher remedies the index problem, I can't. Unless you want it primarily for the keys, I suggest looking for a used copy of the first edition.

Francis H. Buzzacott's comprehensive guidebook for those turn-of-the-last-century hearties intent on venturing into the wilderness for fishing, hunting, and camping has the aura of an archeological curiosity. It's so oddly engaging at times that it's hard to put down once you've picked it up.
Originally published in 1913 and designed to be taken along on any outdoor excursion, The Sportsman's Encyclopedia--a collection, really, of several individual manuals and commercial catalogues that Buzzacott issued over time--offers a fascinating window onto a preconservation era when adventurers approached nature as an adversary fit to exploit and trample. Pack light? This is a concept Buzzacott never heard of; the great tent he created resembles a prefab that needs trucking in. The modern notion of leaving no trace of your presence behind? Buzzacott prefers chopping down a tree and turning its stump into a table. This is a real piece of Americana, issued in facsimile form; what makes it such an appealing artifact is its very political incorrectness and how far we've hiked from some of its less enlightened corners.
Yet, for all that's dated about it, the Encyclopedia remains a spirited and remarkably useful instructional for anglers and hunters. It's filled with practical pointers--"open the stomach of your first fish and see what they are feeding on and follow the 'tip'"--and detailed advice on equipment, reading weather, cleaning guns, tying knots, setting decoys, selecting flies, and choosing bait that has stood the test of time. In the end, though, it's the oddities that dazzle as they raise your eyebrows, like this pre-Heimlich maneuver should someone in your party be choking: "If possible force water down the throat or push down substance with spoon handle. Backwoods Bible.......2003-09-12
I know that a lot of modern camp-weenies will say this book is dated, etc. Well, it IS. It's from the turn of the century, and while it might not have a bunch of reviews of 2-ounce tents, it has a tremendous amount of great lore and information. It's an amazing book. The introduction by Denis Boyles is funny and fascinating. As one reviewer here said, who knew "Buzzacott" was such a strange bird?

The tree huggers do not want to read this book. Francis is a believer of taking and using what is presented to you as opposed to lugging with or buying fancy gear. I especially enjoyed his camp cooking and food preporation section. I also am going to run out and make his highly recomended " The Camp Combination" (five in one) outfit featured on page 41. Francis has saved the day for me in looking for an answer to sleeping comfortably and sensibly in the outdoors. Do youself a favor before you take your wallet out and buy all the gear you think you need, and buy this book first!
The best hunting and fishing book ever. A great classic!.......2001-04-14
I once had a copy of this book but lost it (on a camping trip, what else?). It was old and ragged, it was published around the turn of the century. I almost flipped when I saw it had been reprinted! (I also almost flipped when I read in the new introduction about what a bizzare guy the famous "Buzzacott" was!) This book has everything in it! Even if you only go into the woods once a year, this is the ultimate outdoorsman's guide. Take it with you, but don't be like me and lose your copy!

I brought both this dictionary and the "pocket" dictionary to bring on a trip to Paris. Well, this version is enormous - I won't even bring it. And the "pocket" dictionary by the same publisher wouldn't fit into any pockets of mine. It's the size I would leave on my desk to study with - not for trips.

This is one of the best dictionaries on the market. The selection of words is great, and the layout is easy to read and easy to carry. I've used this book a lot and will continue to buy Larousse books!
Nice book, but I liked Cassell's better.......2007-02-13
Though this is a very nice book, I prefer the old version of Cassell's to this one. The Cassell's version had a lot more examples of use in the translated terms.The Cassell's version also seemed a little more "user-friendly" in terms of the layout of the book. I purchased this for my high school daughter and middle school son to use in their French classes. I also highly recommend the 501 verbs book for anyone studying French at those levels. (I made it through 3 years of college French with 501 verbs and the Cassell's books).

Larousse sets the standard for pocket dictionaries. This "nouveau dictionnaire de poche: français-anglais" is the best small french-english/english-french dictionary one can find. The January, 2000 edition has 120,000 translations, which is 40,000 more than the 1999 editon and well worth the five dollar increase in price. This dictionary is excellent for quick translations and is very up-to-date with usage.

I was translating a rather involved and esoteric webpage from French to English and picked this up to supplant a much weaker dictionary; I was not disappointed. It proved to be of great value.
It's big, the entries are easy to work with, it covers slang, it has good pronunciation guides. Would serve one well in commercial, private or educational use.
Classic Winner.......2000-06-12
This has been my dictionary of choice for over 25 years. It captures the nuances of the french language and translates them into common sense English. Larousse has always been up-to-date in providing current slang and "street" language as is spoken every day in France. A priceless reference.

Good , but not "le meilleur".......2000-06-06
This is a reasonably good bilingual dictionary which will be of great use to high school or college students until they get into reading really heavy duty French literature (particularly anything modern) or trying to translate really fine points. At such a time, a larger dictionary will provide more nuance and help find just the right word for the job.
What differentiates the Larousse from other similarly-hefty French-English dictionaries is, I find, a somewhat classical--even old-fashioned view of how both French and English are spoken and written.
So, depending on how advanced your French is and whether you're dealing with cutting-edge French or something a bit more classical, this just might be the dictionary that your bookshelf has been waiting for. (Ed, sorry 'bout the dangling prep).

I have been studying french for several years. This is one of the best dictionaries that I've used. It is very resourceful. It has up-to-date, modern words and slang in both languages. It also has information on organizations and both cultures. It is truly one of the best books in my french library.
Easy to read.......2003-01-22
This is a great dictionary. Compare to what other French dictionary I had, this one is the best. It is very easy to read, since the letter is pretty big. Paper and ink are good too, you won't get a BLACK hand after usin' this dictionary.

Simplistic beauty.......2004-03-18
This is a very simplistic series of books. I must admit though, that the simple feel of the manga makes the series more enjoyable. Sometimes I grow tired of wading through the heavy and more realistic titles out there. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of anime and manga, but every now and then it's nice to stop reading a mental buster and pick up something more light - kind of like the difference between Gerald's Game and Harry Potter ~_^
A Pleasing, Straight Forward Series.......2003-07-25
Some people find "Steam Dectives" to be a bit too simplistic, considering other works from Kia Asamiya. However, one must remember that this manga was created for his son, and really is made to be one, enjoyable romp. The main character builds model trains and cars; this is supposed to fun for the most part, not deeply psychological.
Also, if you're not one for the art, then by all means, just don't read the manga. I for one, adore Asamiya's art. Also, if you pay attention, he simplified his usual style for this series, to give it a more cartoony feeling. The big buttons everyone wears are even a salute to "Inspector Gadget," where he was an inbetween animator.
The characters are wonderful. Narutaki is a great hero. Showing bravery where'd you expect a hero to, but then every so often we're suddenly reminded that he is, after all, just a young boy. Ling Ling might be a bit on the weak side for a few people, but I've gotten rather sick and tired of kickbutt female sidekicks. And Le Bread and Lang Lang are just cool villains. When you have a villain dressing like the Phantom of the Opera, with a sidekick nurse who believes death is the best solution to pain, you've got a great rogue gallery set up.
This isn't for everyone, I'm sure. But this series is great for someone who wants to sit back, and just enjoy a pleasant read.
High Hopes..........2003-06-10
I like the whole idea of the steampunk genre but it's SO hard to execute, and so I was really hoping alot when I took a look at this series, but, it was really [bad] and didn't make anysense and I thought it was so cheezy that even a little kid would be disappointed by this.

This is a very good book. I got it hoping for something to last me a while, but it was so good I read it in less than 2 hours. A very good bit of mystery for the young reader. But I suggest parents look over this in a book store before sharing with children because of a shower scene. It's not explicit though. It doesn't show anything really, but it may offend some parents.
Too simplistic.......2000-04-30
Steam Detectives suffers from the simplicity of its stories. Although it's not quite on the Scooby Doo level of simplicity, it's not nearly far enough above it. The villains are of the masked variety, with nonsensical schemes and goals. The steampunk--high technology based on steam power--setting is interesting enough (if derivative, considering the recent wave of steampunk stories), but it's really wasted. It's not so much that the stories here are bad; rather, there just isn't enough to them.
The art can either save this book or harm it. I've never been a big fan of Kia Asamiya's artwork--the noses of his characters are just too big for their faces (in length and width), and it doesn't appeal to me. Steam Detectives doesn't suffer this nearly so much as other stories (Silent Moebius, for one), but the artwork is also simpler and more stylized. My recommendation: click on the cover art to get a larger view of it. That's what the art looks like, except the book is black & white. Some people love the look of Kia Asamiya's artwork, so take a look at it and decide.
