Customer Reviews:
Not really World History.......2007-04-01
The latter half of this book is clearly a "Western" History Almanac. It basically discusses other countries' involvements in western countries' affairs. Also, there was too much info on domestic issues in the U.S.-- that information should be reserved for the U.S. almanac!! I gave it 3/5 b/c the beginning was informational.
Great Reference.......2006-11-20
I learned more from this book than all my history classes. It compresses the history of humans from the beginning telling facts using diagrams and maps. It tells us how the human world evolved from nothing to what it is today.
Wonderful Reference Book.......2006-02-03
National Geographic Almanac of World History is a wonderful resource. The Chronological Chapters, Maps, Time-lines and Introductory Threads are easy to use. A very nice addition to add to your library.
I Rate and Compare World History Atlas Books.......2005-12-19
As a reader I like to have quick reference books at my finger tips including a new version of the Oxford English Dictionary about 3500 pages long - that I use almost daily. So I decided to add a "history atlas". In the process of doing my research I read the other amazon.com reviewers and then made three trips to two large book stores to actually look at the books and get a better feel for which was the best. I ended up buying the Oxford Atlas of World History. Here are my picks and rankings.
Listed by My ranking, #1 is the best, #2 is a creative alternative but no substitute.
1. Atlas of World History, Oxford University Press 2002, 368 pages, (...), 13.5" x 10.3" x 1.62" ranked 46,632 on Amazon.com. Hands down winner - professional - good text descriptions, outstanding maps and drawings, covers most things from the cave man forward. Negatives: Big and heavy. If you want to save a few dollars buy the "concise" version.
2. Creative alternative: The Penguin Atlas of World History, Penguin Books 2004, (...), just a paperback sized, just published, 304 pages. Surprisingly impressive, lots of text and pictures mixed together and it is easy to carry around. A nice quick alternative but it will be printed in two volumes.
3. Timelines of World History, DK Publishing 2002, 666 pages, (...). 10.0" x 1.6" ranked 25,800 on Amazon.com. Second with lots of value but in some ways not as comprehensive.
4. National Geographic Almanac of World History, National Geographic 2003, 384 pages, (...), 9.6" x 7.8" x 1.17" ranked 24,426 on Amazon.com. Similar to but less impressive than Oxford books. More text, narrower coverage, fewer maps and drawings.
5. DK Atlas of World History, DK Publishing, 352 pages,(...), 10.96" x 14.66" x 1.28" ranked 10,716 on Amazon.com. My last place book seems like a giant comic book. I love the DK travel books but this seems like one step beyond DK's area of expertise. Superficially it is similar to the Oxford book and it is cheap, and some might like it but it tries to be politically correct and fails.
6. Oxford Dictionary of World History, Oxford University Press, 704 pages, (...), pocketbook sized, sales rank 330,000. Mainly terms, people, and dates but has a few maps also. Limited use but an alternative. I prefer the new Penguin book but this is the best history dictionary to buy.

Excellent work by Patricia Daniels and Stephen Hyslop for National Geographic.
A great volume to have in your home

Book Description
Bruce A. Kimball attacks the widely held assumption that the idea of American "professionalism" arose from the proliferation of urban professional positions during the late nineteenth century. This first paperback edition of "The "True Professional Ideal" in America" argues that the professional ideal can be traced back to the colonial period. This comprehensive intellectual history illuminates the profound relationships between the idea of a "professional" and broader changes in American social, cultural, and political history.

Book Description
The Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider)--art movement was founded in 1911 by the young painters Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and was active in Europe until 1914. Originally published in Munich in 1912 and edited by Kandinsky and Marc-- the movements's almanac presented their synthesis of international culture to the European avant-garde at large. In both the selection of essays and its innovative interplay of word and image, The Blaue Reiter Almanac remains one of our most critically important works of literature on the art theory and culture of the 20th century. This edition, long unavailable in English and indispensable to any student of modernism, simulates the original German format, and includes documents, and musical notations, as well as seminal essays by Kandinsky, Schoenberg, Marc, and others. Nearly 150 illustrations, from ancient and contemporary sources, capture the wide-ranging interests and passions that inspired Kandinsky's and Marc's programmatic attempt to make modernism accessible across national and chronological boundaries. Also included is Klaus Lankheit's extensive critical introduction, which places the Blaue Reiter in context for contemporary readers."The almanac remains unique among European writings on art; no other country produced a comparable work capturing the excitement and tension of the years before World War I." (Will Grohmann)
Customer Reviews:
Seminal 20th Century Art Document.......2007-09-21
The editors, Kandinsky and Marc, put together this manifesto before World War I. It's an essential document for understanding the artistic ferment in Germany, France and Russia in the early part of the 20th Century.
Marc died at Verdun in 1916; Kandinsky pursued a successful career, and died in Paris during World War II. Both men believed that artists were the spiritual leaders of the future--a belief that still reverberates today.
A valuable scrutiny of the Blaue Reiter art movement.......2006-02-06
Originally published in Munich in 1912, and now available in English, The Blaue Reiter Almanac is a valuable scrutiny of the Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider) art movement, which was founded in 1911 by painters Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc and remained active in Europe until 1914. The Blaue Reiter Almanac combines an assembly of short essays with black-and-white reproductions of artwork to offer the reader a glimpse into the methodology, purpose, and essence of this short-lived yet passionate movement. An invaluable addition to modern art history shelves.

Great baby gift.......2005-02-10
I think it's a great gift for a baby's first birthday - the photos from the year they were born.
Great book but watch the year!.......2002-04-05
This is a fantastic book! I have started collecting these and so far have 3 books in the series. I think they are a great, economical way to remember what has happened in our history and to never forget.
You mush watch the title however. This book says "2001 Album" which really means pictures from the 2000 year. If people would look at the published date they would see that it was published in Feb. 2001 which oviously means it is not for the 2001 year.
This book has fantastic picture quality. Even some photos are dual page spreads. Fantastic quality and great captions and descriptions makes for a winning combo.
Start collecting these books today. They're the best photo's and descriptions you can buy at this price!
2001? I think not!!.......2002-03-04
I bought two copies of this book for my twins that were born in 2001. I thought it would be great for them to have when they get older to see what happened the year they were born. However, I quickly returned the books when I found out that they are actually about events that occured in the year 2000, NOT 2001 as one would guess from its title! I think this is a bad title for the book. I was highly disappointed!
I think this book is mistitled ..........2002-02-24
This book is titled "Life 2001 Album: Yhe Year In Pictures", but buyer beware ... the year that is depicted in pictures is actually the year 2000! Great book if what you really want is a picture book of the Year 2000, not 2001.

You need to work on your swing! If this advice has ever been given to you, Lau's Laws on Hitting will spell out the professional instructions you need. Coaches at all levels will benefit from the observations, teaching techniques, player analysis and refinements to the Lau System.
Customer Reviews:
Off the bat into the outfield.......2007-08-27
I don't know Mr. Lau but he knows what he's talking about. The first game I applied these laws and I went 5 for 5. The next I went for my old ways I went 1 for 4. Luck? I don't think so. These laws are simple and comprehensive. Even teaching them to youngsters is easy and giving them tips which give immediate results just gives them an incredible boost. Keep up the good work Mr. Lau and my next hope is to get to the Lau trainig facilities to get hands on coaching to the next level.
To Charlie Lau you must listen.......2007-05-24
Charlie Lau, Jr. takes up whether his famous father left. His instructions are great, as are most of the illustrations and photos. The book gives you a very good guide as to the types of swings you should have to be successful in hitting. I would not calls his techniques "Lau's laws" because by nature, the choices and styles of most people vary, if only slightly. However, the regimen outlined in the book is excellent and a must read for every serious coach and student of the game. He needs to mention that baseball, though mental enough, involves many nuances which we cannot control. I don't believe any one person revolutionized baseball more than the VCR did years ago. Highly recommend this book!!
Charley, Jr. on Hitting.......2003-04-30
This book is a must read for parents and coaches who want to help their kids develop a solid, repeatable swing. I played for a high school coach who was a huge Charley Sr. advocate and I think Sr.'s book is tremendous. Charley Jr. covers a lot of the same ground but focuses on certain principles, such as getting full extension by releasing the top hand and hitting the ball with backspin, that weren't covered in as much detail by his father. Charley Jr. also includes a series of drills that can help baseball players of all ages. Sr.'s book is not a good source for drills. Charley Jr. also includes a series of photos of the top major leaguers which validates the "laws" he advocates. He also picks apart a lot of the generic old school hitting philosophy which simply hasn't stood the test of time and isn't practiced by the top hitters in MLB but is still taught by many little league and high school coaches.
Lau, jr. Fills in the Gaps.......2001-07-21
I have been a high school baseball coach for the last 15 years. In the early 90's, I tried to use Lau, sr.'s mechanics, but I didn't fully understand the "why" of Lau, sr. Charley Lau, jr. "filled in the gaps" for me. When I first read Lau, jr.'s theories on hitting a baseball with backspin vs. topspin, I thought that there would be no way that high school kids could be taught this. He proved me wrong. Employing his drills to the max to accomplish this, my team last season went from hitting 0 home runs and .280 in a summer league to 35 home runs and .350 during the spring season (2001) smashing our way to the regional finals. We actually had to get away from intrasquad scrimmages because our infielders were not getting enough work. Our hitters were constantly driving the ball to the outfield either over the fence or in the gaps as Lau, jr. claims you will do in his book. Our players and I swear by the techniques Lau, jr. stresses in this book. It is by far the best book on hitting that I have ever read and that includes The Art of Hitting by Ted Williams.
Taking hitting to new heights.......2001-07-12
Lau's Laws on Hitting is the new and true most accurate and revealing guide to not only understand the best way to hit but gives a step by step approach on how to build the most dynamic swing possible. I read "The Art Of Hitting .300" by Lau sr.I feel Charley Jr. has taken not only how to understand the best way to hit but also shows, through his drills, a sure fire way on how to build the best swing possible. His book transcends all of the other generic information out their. His father would be proud...

Customer Reviews:
What I've been looking for.......2007-08-04
In an attempt to begin a new hobby I've been buying books on this subject. Most have left me guessing. This book gives you hands on plus the theory and equations to understand why it works the way it does. Though I have not finished (I am building the project)I understand more about electronics than after completing several projects from other books I've read.
If you want to know why, and how, the projects from other books work this is the book to buy. If you just want to build them and use them without understanding how they work or how you might safely substitute parts or alter the project then this will be more than you need.
Excellent for beginners, but incorrect convention used.......2006-04-24
I would highly recommed this book to anybody interested in electronics as a solid starting guide. A vast amount of material is covered and is covered on a basic level.
That being said, I do have to deduct a star based on the current flow convention used by the author. Conventional current flow as defined by IEEE (Institue of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) is from + to - voltage (or higher to lower reference voltage), which is the opposite of electron flow (electrons flow from - to + terminals). The author defines current flow to be along the same path and direction as electron flow, which any electrical engineering student will tell you is incorrect.
Other than the current convention problem and a few minor flaws, an excellent source of information.
not very helpful for a beginner.......2006-04-10
I think this book is the worst of both worlds as a text or reference manual in that there are no real-world analogies in the first two chapters, and there aren't any really good tables for reference either. Also, in chapter two the description of capacitors (and their markings) makes no sense and the first page of chapter that ends with "this is why all common household current is AC" also makes no sense because it is preambled by a description of AC and no transformer action.
I read chapter two a couple of times but still lack a good understanding because I NEED (as I imagine many do) some connection with the real world. The water pump example is good but it stops there. I dove into this text with an excitement and desire to diagnose and repair some old audio equipment that can see new life. I think I'd better find a better book before i get completely discouraged, or start working without good knowledge.
Pretty good -- especially if you're interested in audio amplifiers.......2006-02-08
Randy Sloan does a fairly decent job of dragging you through the mud of complex and confusing concepts, but there are sections of this book that aren't clearly explained.
The book starts with a well-executed section introducing Ohm's Law; the first fundamental concept you'll need to understand if you hope to eventually comprehend electronic circuits. You are immediately presented with hands-on labs and projects to illustrate and reinforce the text.
You are led from the basics of volts, amps, ohms and watts, into building a power supply for your new electronics workbench, then on to audio amplifier projects you can build that make use of your power supply project.
The chapter on transistors was not as clearly explained as the rest of the topics in the book, and that turned out to be detrimental to the successful comprehension of all subsequent topics. Even re-reading that chapter over and over didn't clear the cobwebs, and I will seek the help of other books for this.
Having said that, I think Randy Sloan writes well and this book is excellent in most respects. I recommend it as one resource in your quest to understand the basics of electronics.
An excellent introduction to practical electronics.......2006-01-29
For most people, this a probably the best book available to self-teach yourself electronics. It briefly introduces the theoretical concepts, but it is mostly focused on the practical side of things. The first two chapters deal with the basics-- setting up a workstation, selecting tools, briefly introducing each component (later chapters go into much more detail), and finally about 35 pages or so on the underlying theories & laws. From there on, each chapter introduces a specific component type, covers more of the theory relevant to those components, and in most cases the chapter ends with one or more projects that use the component. The projects range from short (one or two pages) circuits, to fairly involved projects spread over multiple chapters. Unlike some eletcronic books, most of these projects will be generally useful. In most cases, you are building tools that you will probably continue to use as you skills develop (The first project, for example, is a dual variable power supply that any electronics hobbyist will find quite useful.)
There are a few minor problems with the book, though none of them warrant deducting a star. The biggest thing that I've noticed so far is the lack of photographs. There are a few photos in chapter one and two showing each tool and examples of the components, but there are no photos at all showing any of the projects. The projects are illustrated with line drawings & schematics, but in some cases the instructions would be clearer with the addition of photos. The section on soldering has the same problem. The text is quite clear, but the addition of a photo or two would be beneficial.
Another reviewer complains about schematic symbols being used without being introduced. He's correct, Slone doesn't actually define any of the schematic symbols, nor does he include a section on reading schematics. That's clearly a pretty big oversight, and it should be fixed in a later edition. That said, all of the schematics are quite clearly labeled. While it may not be immediately obvious to someone with no electronic knowledge what T1 refers to on a schematic, it shouldn't be to hard to figure out that, considering you are reading a chapter on transformers, it probably means "the first transformer". Anytime that it's not obvious the component is labeled specifically.
The same reviewer also complains that the book is focused to heavily on projects, not enough on theory. Most people will probably think that's a good thing, but rest assured that you will learn enough theory here to get you started. Writing a book like this is a fine balancing act between introducing enough theory to make the concepts clear, but not so much as to turn off the casual hobbyist. This book does an outstanding job of walking that tightrope. If you still feel you need more theory after reading this book, you there are dozens of other books that you can graduate to from here, and this book will get the groundwork in place so you will be able to understand those books.

Customer Reviews:
Was this book ghost-written?.......2005-02-22
I'm a bit disappointed in this book. This is a terrific series, and I highly recommend reading books 1 through 24. There is a natural end to the story a few chapters before the end of book 24, but regrettably everything after that feels artificial, like a publisher's after thought of "why quit now?"
In particular, this book reads as if it were ghost-written. There are a few annoying inconsistencies with the prior storyline, and the characters just don't feel true to themselves anymore.
For example, an avid reader of the series knows that Gaia is a fearless, trained, highly-skilled fighter. We know her emotional state, and we know her intellect. We know how she reacts, both physically and mentally, when she fights with general street-toughs, muggers and criminals, and we know how she reacts during a life-and-death fight with a trained, professional killer. She has standards, and she doesn't back down. She'll sometimes let a little fish go when she feels it's not worth her effort. She fights with her hands and her feet, and with her head; she loathes weapons, and she loathes using more force than is absolutely necessary. Through twenty-some books, we have learned what it takes to make Gaia run away, and IT IS A LOT MORE than two of three street-toughs.
Toward the end of book 27 ("Shock"), there is a fight scene between Gaia and two muggers. The scene is written in solidly in the third-person, as if someone were calling a football game. This dramatic change in writing style from one chapter to the next is enough to remind you that you are reading a book and not listening to Gaia's thoughts. It is as disjointing as if you were engrossed in a movie and then see the microphone swing in from the top of the screen. But beyond the change in writing style is the change in Gaia's fighting style. After a few paragraphs of abstract fighting, Gaia runs. She has been fighting two unskilled muggers (that's nothing for Gaia) and all of a sudden, she doesn't want to stick around and find out how many other guys might be nearby because she isn't sure how many she could disable before they overpowered her. Huh? Talk about an out-of-character response! Now she's fighting three guys, so what does she do? Swings a crowbar she found on the fire-escape. Again, out-of-character. But wait, it doesn't stop there. They're on the run from her, and Gaia thinks this is "too much fun" and decides to chase them and "cause more damage." Did Francine Pascal really write this, or just pen her name on the book? Because this isn't the Gaia we know and love, this is a poor facsimile.
The book was *mostly* true to character, but it was definitely a bit inconsistent in writing style and in the essence of the characters, and it fell short of my high expectations. (sigh)
Not much of a "shocker".......2003-05-28
Ed and Gaia have finally called it quits. *sob* Ed has finally decided that enough is enough and is beginning to seek a new relationship, perfably with Tatiana...Gaia on the other hand is heartbroken, yet she can't bring herself to repair the damage in their relationship. Plus she already has too much to do. Dmitri has given her leads to The Organization and might be able to lead her to her father. Gaia is still shocked that Sam is out to kill her...yet when they have a confrontation things don't go as planned and it appears someone else has been playing tricks on Gaia...
Loki is recovering. He is still in a coma and unable to remember anything about his past. He wants to awake, yet finds his own body unresponsive. More importantly he can't remember who Gaia is...but he knows it is someone very important to him...
This book wasn't much of a shocker. I think from the beginning I knew who was truly after Gaia. For a while I thought it was Sam but then the more you think about it the more you know who it is...and it isn't Sam. Not much of a shocker but this book did start a whole new story arc. Hint: Someone is one the loose. Someone who hates Gaia horribly...or does she really?
Gaia's life takes a few new turns (again).......2003-05-16
Shock is the 27th book in this series. If you have made it this far in the series, I am sure you know what to expect. However, this is one of the better books in recent volumes.
Outside of a Japanese comic book, no one can have a more messed up and topsy-turvy life than Gaia Moore. That is very true in this book. Let's look at some of the tangles.
Tom Moore - still missing but Demetrius may be able to shed some light on where he may be.
Demetrius - he seems to be helping Gaia without an ulterior motive, but then this is Fearless.
Ed Fargo - still on the outs with Gaia over the Sam Moon fiasco.
Sam Moon - may have tried to kill Gaia in the last book but he seems innocent.
Tatiana - roommate and possible future sister in law is fully ensconced in Heathers place at the head of the ex-FOH's.
FOH - originally devoted to Heather, these girls now follow Tatiana like love-sick puppies.
Heather - no further information in this book. Will she get over her blindness?
Natasha - still seems unconcerned about Tom's disappearance from the hospital.
Loki - stuck as a vegetable with no control of his body. But is he starting to come out of it?
After 27 books it might be hard to believe that the plot could advance significantly in a single volume, but it does. Shock is one of the keystone books of the series. If you were wondering if you should continue with the series, you should read this book.
YAY! Another Fearless and still good!.......2003-05-13
Okay, Fearless has gone up and down more times that a rollercoaster. We've seen her happy, sad, depressed, and now we pretty see her at her worst and lowest in this new novel. Some people will enjoy the end as a couple secrets are uncovered and hint at future plot for the story. All the characters really stand out and Loki even gets a couple pages of incite which is amusing. The description for 28 leaves you aching for it more than ever. I've loved Fearless from the beginning and so far it hasn't let me down. Go Francine, you rock!
Book Description
#3: RUN
Sam is gone. No, not just gone. Someone's taken him. Kidnapped him to get to me. And i have only three hours to find him, or Sam is going to die. All because of me.
It all began in a funky brownstone on Perry Street where Gaia Moore lived with her foster family. But Gaia's little Village was brimming with people hell-bent on her own destruction, and her efforts to stay safe took her from parkside chess tournaments to greasy spoons, from the posh Upper East Side to scuzzy college dorm rooms. Along the way she managed to pick up a skate rat, a beauty queen, a hottie reformed school nerd, a recovered punk-rocker, and even a Soviet junior detective. None of whom turned out to be what he or she originally seemed....
Now, in one volume, keep pace with Gaia's latest adventures and revisit the origins of her unique story!
#27: SHOCK
When Sam disappeared, I thought the pain would kill me. Now that he's back, I'm thinking I had it wrong. The pain's not going to kill me. He is.

Different.......2003-12-23
This was an extremely interesting book. I would never have thought the things that unfolded would actually happen! I'm fine will Sam and Gaia's relationship, but I'm really sad about the Gaia/Ed thing.
Who can you trust?.......2003-06-02
This was the most surprising book yet!!! Gaia thinks that Sam is trying to kill her when he's not. You'll never guess who is! Gaia and Ed are not really the boyfriend and girlfriend or girl friend and boy friend type in this book. Gaia sees another part of Jake she has never seen before. Natasha says that Gaia's fater is dead. Gaia doesn't want to believe it. But Dmitri and the CIA don't know where her father is. So Gaia has to go and try and find her father or people who might know where her father is.I know I left yall hangin sorry. Pick up the book to find out more! It'll make all sense when you read the book.
