Book Description
The oceans, and the challenges they face, are so vast that it’s easy to feel powerless to protect them. 50 Ways to Save the Ocean, written by veteran environmental journalist David Helvarg, focuses on practical, easily-implemented actions everyone can take to protect and conserve this vital resource. Well-researched, personal, and sometimes whimsical, the book addresses daily choices that affect the ocean's health: what fish should and should not be eaten; how and where to vacation; storm drains and driveway run-off; protecting local water tables; proper diving, surfing, and tide pool etiquette; and supporting local marine education. Helvarg also looks at what can be done to stir the waters of seemingly daunting issues such as toxic pollutant runoff; protecting wetlands and sanctuaries; keeping oil rigs off shore; saving reef environments; and replenishing fish reserves.
Customer Reviews:
Many ideas for protecting the world's oceans and the creatures therein..........2007-10-15
I picked up a copy of this book at the 2007 Hawai'i Conservation Conference, where author David Helvarg was a keynote speaker. Helvarg is president of the Blue Frontier Campaign, an ocean advocacy group.
50 Ways to Save the Ocean is a book with a mission. That mission is to convince the reader that:
1. The oceans are in trouble and need your help.
2. There are things each person can do to assist in the conservation of our oceanic resources, even if you live in Kansas.
Most of the ideas are good, and I appreciate that Helvarg went beyond the "donate money to..." strategies that most Americans get in their weekly mail solicitations (although he encourages you to donate money to a variety of causes and organizations). He promotes activism: volunteering, writing, and lobbying. He notes the power of consumerism in affecting how the ocean's resources are exploited ("follow the money").
I found that I do about 3/4 of the actions he recommends. The question is, how does this information get into the hands of those who are not already involved in ocean protection issues?
Spongebob would be proud..........2006-08-16
I just spent 2 weeks with my Canadian nephews who are 8, 11, and 13 years old. Most of our evenings were spent in an endless Spongebob Marathon - Right after they left and went home, I came across this book and thought it would be a great companion reference for any Spongebob fans. Little did I know that Sponges are being overharvested and take many years to grow. Well, I'm sending my nephews a copy of this book so they can get a reality check on what's really going on in Bikini Bottom - and perhaps they could find their own everyday ways to participate in the healing of the ocean. -This is a Great Reference book for parents and kids.
An Inconvenient Truth.......2006-06-15
If you saw An Inconvenient Truth and are wondering what you and your family can do about global warming, take a look at 50 Ways to Save the Ocean. It will help you through the thicket with lots of practical and yes, simple, ways each of us can participate in saving our planet.
An informed introduction to the innovative ways anyone can use to help preserve Earth's oceans and aquatic-life.......2006-06-04
Fifty Ways To Save The Ocean by environmental activist David Helvarg (founder of Blue Frontier) is an informed introduction to the innovative ways anyone can use to help preserve Earth's oceans and aquatic-life. Expertly guiding readers through diverse ways to effectively contribute to bettering the condition the great oceans, Fifty Ways To Save The Ocean provides a keen understanding of which fish should not be eaten and which species are endangered or could impact adversely human health; how to save energy and how that might help out the seas; proper diving, surfing, and tide pool equipment; support for local marine education; and keeping an ocean-friendly aquarium. Fifty Ways To Save The Ocean is enthusiastically recommended reading, especially for environmentalists hoping to do their part in contributing to the best health of Mother Earth's oceanic environments.
Great Family Book!.......2006-05-16
This is an excellent book to help teach your family about caring for our oceans! The ideas and illustrations are fantastic to read with kids. Almost all of the suggestions can be accomplished as a family, too. Going to the beach, going on a whale-watching trip, visiting tide pools, eating healthy and sustainable seafood, etc., are all great family activities! This book makes it easy to get your whole family together and interested in saving our oceans. Also really helpful in giving extra meaning to family activities, as everything can be prefaced with an interesting suggestion from this book. It will certainly also improve your kids' self-esteem, knowing they are helping the environment. On top of that, it is a great read!

Customer Reviews:
Start Now to Save the Planet.......2006-01-01
This was an exciting book because it gave me lots of new information to help the planet. For example, I didn't know that asthma is greatly caused by pollution--so of course there's another reason to clean the air. The pictures really showed examples of pollution and ways to stop it. The book also lists websites that give even more ways to help. So read this book, and you can start helping, too.
A must-have library addition.......2005-12-27
Planet Patrol is a must-have for every teacher on earth; it's a must-have for everyone who believes that our environment is the most important contributor to health and well being. Chock full of information and projects, Marybeth Lorbiecki outdid herself on research and writing. She's one of the most important writers on the planet. Lorbiecki cares. Read this book! It's fun AND educational. Share it! Practice its philosophies. You've only yourselves to enrich.
Book Description
The reissue of this classic history allows us to once again journey into the past and rediscover for the first time the forgotten men and methods of logging history in the Northwest United States and Canada. This book contain the best photographs of a dozen famous collections: Davis and Benson rafts, river drives, hand logging spar topping big wheels in the pine, saw mills of 1890 to 1915, historical ox teams, tractors, blumes. In this chronicle of the Big Woods, bunk house ballads, humorous sketches and eyewitness accounts of work and life in the tall uncut as well as the rich photographs help the reader to actually feel the old logging atmosphere.

Photos & Stories From When Timber Was King.......2001-12-28
This is a classic for anyone interested in the history of logging in the Pacific Northwest. Together with Andrews other companion book, "This Was Sawmilling" the reader will gain a great understanding how trees were harvest, transported to mills and converted into the resources which built this Country. There's hundreds of wonderful photos from the woods along with many contraptions which loggers created to make their tasks either easier or more likely, more productive. Can you imagine a raft 1000 feet long and 30 feet wide and deep made out of logs laced together with huge chains? These structures containing millions of board feet of trees would be created in the far Northwest and floated down the coast to San Diego, CA and further. There's photos in the book. There's a great photo of a logger standing on the top of a tree hundreds of feet in the air just after he has completed preparation for high-lead logging. The book is separated into geographic regions from British Columbia and each of the States of the Northwest. It has numerous poems written about loggers. (Please don't call them lumber-jacks. I never heard a man who works in the woods called a lumber-jack all my years going up in Oregon. Yet a recent TV show about the worlds most dangerous jobs constantly referred to them a lumber-jacks.) Distraction of this classic includes the lack of a table of contents, index, and the disconnect between the photos and the stories. Which is to be expected. Andrews rarely had photos of the people in the stories and vice versa. Why this short-comings. Superior Publishing printed many of these books by folks who simply wanted to document the hard work of others. Regardless whether it was logging, railroading, or shipping they were willing to publish the books. Thank goodness they did or we'd never have had these classics. If you have an interest in the history of logging this book will be a great addition to your collection.

Book Description
Inspiring the next generation: How to lead an effective, grassroots environmental campaign in Washington state.
*A clear picture of the many different environmental issues in Washington state: what needs to be done and what can be done by people like you *Success stories of citizens who have made a difference *Analysis of grass roots campaigns that work
Beyond giving money or answering "action alert" campaigns to write your local congressperson, you, as a citizen, can be at the table when decisions are made for specific wild places you care about. Defending Wild Washington documents how great accomplishments have been achieved by persons of modest means and, often, with no special past experience. One citizen activist reached out to community leaders and mill owners who rely on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Another led forest advocates to bid on a Washington state timber sale to stop the cut. The success stories of today are added to interviews with pioneers in the movement.
Customer Reviews:
Informative book filled with inspiration.......2006-03-12
This book has a lot of information about how protecting wild areas works in WA and and an overview of the protections offered by the United States Government. It then provides the inspiration to get people started through true stories of grassroots projects. While the book doesn't list 1, 2, 3, what needs to be done to start a grassroots movement, that shouldn't be expected, because all people have different motivations, and this book should be used as a tool to help you understand the basics of how these sorts of movements work. A must for anyone who wants to further understand Washington state for all of its great wild places, or anyone for that matter, that is looking for inspiration on why wild areas should be protected. Plus all of the proceeds go to a great cause!
Student Authors Challenge and Inspire an Aging Movement.......2004-05-10
I have to admit to a special interest in Defending Wild Washington. Not only have I been involved in the forest protection movement in this state since the mid 1980s, but as a current Graduate Student at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, I had the rare opportunity to get to know the undergraduate students and their instructors who together wrote this astonishing book.
Why make this claim? In early October of 2002, 20 plus students new to the issue began researching the history and current status of a movement of individuals and organizations working to protect Washington's Wildness. By June 2003 they had finished the research, interviewed key players and completed a draft manuscript, which was well written and gave a cogent analysis of this complex issue. Even after leaving the class, they continued to work with draft after draft, refining the words and the message to get it just right.
The final product is something well worth reading and is a sterling accomplishment for everyone who participated.
More than just a narrative of events, this book discusses and analyzes what is positive and what needs change within the current movement. The students, and their major faculty member and editor of this book, Ted Whitesell, offer seasoned activits advice we may find difficult to hear. They want us, and you, to stop thinking small during this time of political conservativism, but rather to think big and bold and begin rebuildng the movement--from the grassroots on up.
Good for them. They have the right message for this time and I only hope each and every one of them will join the movement and provide us with their great inspiration to stretch and grow.
I also hope they will inspire the readers of this book to get involved. Washington will not keep its wildness without the help of thousands of committed citizens. Defending Wild Washington points the way.

Practical, yet challenging.......2003-09-25
Collaborative Spunk: The Feisty Guide for Reviving People and Our Planet is an ideal guide for people like me, who care deeply about the state of our planet. I have often felt frustrated because it seems like the efforts of one individual cannot be enough to reverse the downward ecological, economic, and socio-political spiral in which we've been trapped. This book, by combining solid scientific principles with collaboration on a grassroots level, provides us with a way forward that can work. I strongly recommend it to anyone who truly wants to 'make a difference'.

Signs for me.......2007-09-24
I bought this bool to increase my ASL vocabulary to use with my hard of hearing children and it has disapeared! One of my children liked it so much he took it to school to use to teach his main stream teacher.
Excellent Buy!.......2007-03-08
Other books I have tried were very difficult to understand. But this book made it easy for me to learn simple signs and relay them to my preschoolers.
Book: Signs for Me............2006-11-11
The books arrived in great condition. The seller was very prompt in getting the books out to me. Thank you!
Check this out!.......2006-08-28
I have a daycare with children who use & do not use sign language. Personally i have used signs for a long time. This book is not only a teaching tool, but fun for the kids to use. I have created a memory game with some of the basic signs that children use everyday. With the other teaching books i have & use this is the one the children flock to to learn new signs. I only wish i had bought it a long time ago. After i bought it i had an instant request from a parent to buy one!
great.......2005-08-28
This book is great for children. The pictures of the signs are very easy to understand and the pictures illustrating the words are wonderful. My four-year old doesn't need to be able to read the vocabulary word to understand the book herself. She loves this book. I'm a sign language interpreter, the book shows ASL signs, but no grammer rules. It's basically a sign dictionary. I agree it's missing a few key signs, but overall I really like this book. I just recently used this book to teach a Parent/Toddler sign class. Everyone in the class liked this book.
