Customer Reviews:
Great book for interaction!.......2007-10-02
This book is really hands on, and gets lots of talking and questions going with my 3 and 5 yr olds. It's a clever book and we've had a lot of fun with it.
From preschooler to kindergartner to Mommy, everyone loves this book!.......2007-08-21
My family loves this book! Both my sons, ages three and five, enjoy trying to guess which animal this tail, nose, foot, etc., belongs to, and then reading what the animal "does" with it. In the back of the book are more in-depth descriptions of the animals, which we also enjoyed. We ordered this book from Amazon over a year ago, and it is still a top choice when we sit down to read!
My kids love this!.......2007-06-13
Great educational and fun book! My kids' favorite is the horned lizard shooting blood out of his eyes. Lovely collage illustrations too.
Lucky twice.......2007-05-26
It is a good, informative book. Although my 9 years old son seems to be very old for this kind of reading, I still bought it for him because of the book's educational value. Surprise, surprise! - my Big Boy liked the book a lot(!) We now quiz each other about various animals... Another good book that I value a lot for its educational content is Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2 by B. Nowiki. I was afraid that in this case my son would to be a "little too little", but he is now reading it and seems to have even more fun... - lucky me, again!
Fascinating animal facts.......2007-05-13
Little known anatomical facts on a number of interesting animals that should entertain inquisitive youngsters.

Customer Reviews:
VERY CUTE.......2007-09-03
MY SON LOVES THIS BOOK, HE LOVES READING IT, IT REALLY HELPS KIDS KNOW THAT EVERYBODY HAS A SPECIFIC PLACE FOR POOP, IT'S FUNNY, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE SUBJECT, BUT IT'S AWESOME, COMPLETLEY RECOMMEND!!!!!!~
fun book!.......2007-08-31
My 22 month old son really likes this book. He loves lift the flaps in general so I knew he would at the very least have fun with it. The poo kinda looks like rocks, so sometimes he says poo poo when he sees a rock. The pictures are not very colorful or vivid, but overall it is a good book. It definitely helps him understand and feel comfortable with the concept. I think the last pictures of the real bathrooms really helped to clarify that everyone has a bathroom and uses it!
Great book!.......2007-08-13
My daughter wants to read this book all the time. She can almost read it back to me she has heard it so many times.
The road to success.......2007-07-24
I picked out Where's the Poop for a difficult-to-toilet-train grandson, chosing it after reading reviews and thinking Ms. Markes' idea was simple enough for a toddler, presented in a clever and amusing fashion and was very inventive. 2 days after the book arrived and he'd read it twice with Mom, grandson woke her up one morning, climbed onto the toilet with his book, and did a perfect imitation of the little boy at the end of the story. He's so pleased with himself, as are we, particularly that the little charmer was able to take such a big step without any "pressure", in the finest tradition of self-discipline. He has had no slip-ups since.
Our many thanks to the author! If only this book was made of firmer stock so the tabs could be counted on to hold up longer.
My daughter LOVES this book!.......2007-07-08
My daughter's got the peeing part of potty training mastered, but she still won't poop in the potty, so I got this book to try to make some ground there. She's a couple weeks shy of her 3rd birthday and she LOVES this book. We've only had it a few days so I can't report on whether it's actually helped with the pooping yet, but she's talking more about pooping on the potty so I am hopeful.

Book Description
Population biology has been investigated quantitatively for many decades, resulting in a rich body of scientific literature. Ecologists often avoid this literature, put off by its apparently formidable mathematics. This textbook provides an introduction to the biology and ecology of populations by emphasizing the roles of simple mathematical models in explaining the growth and behavior of populations. The author only assumes acquaintance with elementary calculus, and provides tutorial explanations where needed to develop mathematical concepts. Examples, problems, extensive marginal notes and numerous graphs enhance the book's value to students in classes ranging from population biology and population ecology to mathematical biology and mathematical ecology. The book will also be useful as a supplement to introductory courses in ecology.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book That Should Be Enlarged.......2003-09-20
... This one is for sure a very good book on poppulation biology. However, we see at once that the part devoted to population genetics is very short indeed, if it is compared to the other part that treats about population ecology. In this way, it is my firm idea that the part on population genetics should be well enlarged. Only in this way, could we talk on a book about population biology. The way it is in fact written we could say that it is a book on population ecology, rather than on population biology. I recommend that on a future edition, Professor Hastings should dedicate about the same number of pages to both parts. The way this author writes, it will ensure a very large public acceptance.
great book!.......1999-04-02
I read this book as a senior in high school and was able to understand all of it. It is a great introduction to population biology with minimal math! The concepts are very interesting and relevent to our modern world.
As clear and concise a population biology text can be!.......1999-01-16
At last a population biologist who can communicate ideas to the everyday student biologist. The biology and mathematics are completely integrated and well written. Minimal calculus is necessary to understand and use the mathematics behind population biology. Thanks Al.
a gentle but thorough introduction to a fascinating field.......1998-07-04
The field of mathematical biology has a long and storied history of examining relationships between species and scales since before Fisher's 1930 monograph "The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection." Although the excellent text by Edelstein-Keshet is still widely used, on the recommendation of a colleague I recently picked up a copy of the new (1997) text authored by Alan Hastings, out of UC Davis. A 220 page book published by Springer, its title is Population Biology: Concepts and Models. Available in paperback, the volume is divided into Single Species (with sections on density-independent and density-dependent population growth, population genetics, evolution of life histories) and Interacting Species (with sections on interactions, competition, predator-prey, host-parasitoid relationships and diseases). While detailing these concepts, the author includes bite-size reviews of matrix algebra, differential equations, stability computations, phase plane analysis and other topical quantitative techniques. I found the book eminently readable, which says a lot coming from someone who staggered through 18 semester hours of calculus and "Diff EQ" over 20 years ago. This book will be of great help to "ecologists ... [who] often avoid [population biology] literature, put off by its apparently formidable mathematics" (to quote from the back cover).
Book Description
Wildlife-Habitat Relationships goes beyond introductory wildlife biology texts to provide wildlife professionals and students with an understanding of the importance of habitat relationships in studying and managing wildlife. The book offers a unique synthesis and critical evaluation of data, methods, and studies, along with specific guidance on how to conduct rigorous studies. Now in its third edition, Wildlife-Habitat Relationships combines basic field zoology and natural history, evolutionary biology, ecological theory, and quantitative tools in explaining ecological processes and their influence on wildlife and habitats. Also included is a glossary of terms that every wildlife professional should know. Michael L. Morrison is professor and Caesar Kleberg Chair in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at Texas A&M University in College Station. Bruce G. Marcot is wildlife ecologist with the USDA Forest Service in Portland, Oregon. R. William Mannan is professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Customer Reviews:
in the middle leaning to the not so good and the good side........2001-08-08
I would probally regret buying this book, even if i do like animals. The book WILDLIFE-HABITAT RELATIONSHIPS:..... SEEMS KIND OF BORING.
Good overview of traditional concepts and techniques.......2000-06-16
Morrison et al.'s second edition of Wildlife-Habitat Relationships: Concepts and Applications is a welcome overview of the state of the art in the mid-1990s. The authors examine their subject from three complementary viewpoints: basic concepts, measurement and analysis, and management. Individual concepts are presented very clearly and the writing is first-rate. The authors provide a level of detail appropriate to an introductory overview.
While this text is suitable for an undergraduate course and provides an excellent basic reference, seasoned professionals may find it lacking. For example, more recent numerical techniques (such as resource selection functions) are beyond the book's scope. Nevertheless, "Wildlife-Habitat Relationships" is admirably up-to-date in many respects, including excellent discussions of experimental approaches and scale, and I've referred to it many times during the course of my own Ph.D. work.
Book Description
Each spread in this dramatically oversized book displays 30 or more different animals in thought-provoking thematic groupings: Large and Small, Hot Weather, Cold Weather, Feathered, Horned, Spots and Stripes, Friends of Mankind, and so forth. The illustrations are robust, graphic prints that will catch the eye--and the large selection of over 350 different species will make absorbing reading. Includes four pages of informational notes.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2006-12-17
I love this book. I am an art teacher and I use this book in my class as reference for all the beautiful yet simple graphic shapes Ms. Jolivet produces in her work depicting animals
Zoo-ology is a real winner!.......2005-10-11
This larger than life book appeals to children because of it's very large size. The art work is outstanding and because there is very little written word except the name of all the animals it lends itself to discussion. My 2-1/2 year old grandson Gavin loves it. Also on every page is a chameleon who changes to be like the animals on the page, so finding him is another adventure for young folks. Animals are grouped in interesting ways, for example "black and white animals", not your average animal book. As a biologist, animal lover, and grandparent it is an A+ read. And at such a reasonable price I bought two. Buy it, you will love it!
Beautiful.......2004-07-20
I loved this book. It's an oversized book and it's full of animals that you find in the Zoo. The illustrations of the animials are simply beautiful. Exactly my taste. The book has barely any text, only pages full of animials along with their names.

Inside Out.......2000-08-13
The simple, yet accurate, graphics of this little book are a favorite in my Kindergarten classroom. The mysterious , invisible growth inside the egg is presented as a link in the life cycle of the chicken. Children delight in the transparent pages and return to look again and again. Non-readers can recall/retell the simple story with the help of the pictures. Older children quickly absorb the facts illustrated and want additional information. FROM EGG TO CHICKEN is a great book to share with a youngster.

Homology: The Hierarchical Basis of Comparative Biology
ASIN: 0127300562 |
Book Description
"Almost all evolutionary biologists, indeed all biologists, use particular features to study life. Evolutionary biologists use these characteristics or features in a particular way to unravel a tangled evolutionary history, to document the rate of evolutionary change, or as evidence of biodiverisity. "Characters" are the "data" of evolutionary biology and they can be employed differently in research, providing both opportunities and limitations.
The Character Concept in Evolutionary Biology is about characters, their use, how different sorts of characters are limited, and the appropriate methods for character analysis. Leading evolutionary biologists from around the world are contributors to this authoritative review of the "character concept." Because characters and the conception of characters are central to all studies of evolution, and because evolution is the central organizing principle of biology, this book will appeal to a wide cross-section of biologists.
Focuses upon "characters"--fundamental data for evolutionary biology
Covers the myriad ways in which characters are defined, described, and distinguished
Reviews the genetic, functional, and developmental architecture of characters
Discusses the mechanisms by which new characters arise in evolution

Finally, a good one!.......2006-02-14
This series is an imitation of the Eyewitness format for younger readers. I'd recommend it primarily to preschoolers.
Most of these books range from mediocre to horrible, but this is a delightful exception! Small children learn about the anatomy, diet, and lifecycle of ladybugs in clear, concise text. There is a moment of oversimplicifaction--when the book implies that all ladybugs eat only aphids--but other than this quibble, it is excellent. There are no translation problems with this one, either.
My 3 year old loves this book!.......2000-10-18
We received this book as a hand-me-down with a bunch of other books and my three year old son has singled it out. Not only does he always want us to read this book to him, but its one of the books he reads to himself several times each day. As a result he knows more about beetles than most adults! We are planning to buy him more of these books. We believe that the pictures and overlays are what drew him in, and since the text is simple and straight forward he learns and retains the information. We highly recommend these books.
My two year old loves it!.......2000-10-04
I have to admit, the four star rating reflects my daughter's love for this book, rather than mine. It's informative and colorful, but frankly, the subject matter is still a little dry. The text is pretty involved for a two year old, yet my two and half year old toddler's attention span for this book is incredible and it has been a favorite for some time now. I'd really like to know specifically what she finds so compelling, simply because I'd like to get more books that have the same appeal but are challenging as well. (I intend to order some of the other discovery books.) It's definitely one of her favorite books, and of course, she knows all about aphids and can tell the difference between a scarab beetle and a colorado potato beetle. And now, so can I!
An excellent introduction of insects to young people.......1999-09-14
We inherited this book from family, and our 2 year old loves it. She know all about ladybugs, pupa, larva, and aphids. She has spent lots of time looking at the pictures, and she "reads" it to herself some nights (she's memorized most of the words).
GREAT WAY TO INTRODUCE YOUR PRESCHOOLERS TO SCIENCE!!!.......1998-11-24
My 4-year-old daughter loves this book! The pictures and transparencies are very inviting, and the text is easy to follow and informative. Did you know that all insects have 6 legs?? Did you know that ladybugs are yellow at first and then turn red with black dots? My 4 year old can tell you these things as well as what ladybugs eat (answer: aphids).
