    Book Description

This delightful children's book chronicles a year in the life of Suzie Mallard, from her birth on the Canadian prairies to her migration south in the fall. Everything follows its natural course - until Suzie is suddenly knocked from the sky by a storm somewhere in the lower Mississippi Valley. Rescued by a young girl named Alicia, Suzie regains her health and yearns to return to the northern nesting grounds as the days grow longer and warmer. Will Alicia let her go or keep her forever safe in the pen she has built beneath the live oak tree? Alicia's decision to allow Suzie to continue her journey offers an important lesson about the lives of ducks and other wild creatures. (10 x 8 3/4, 32 pages, color illustrations)

    5 out of 5 stars Phenomenon book.......2006-02-25

So far i have found all the little details i needed to know about the game. Easy to follow presentation too, two thumbs way up.

2 out of 5 stars pretty book, but..........2005-04-07

lots of nice colour pictures, but a little basic for all but the absolute beginner.

4 out of 5 stars great introduction for beginners.......2004-11-30

I play Rugby and this is a good book for someone ne to the game. It explains quite clearly the different tactics for different positions and has good photographs to show you It's really helpful for beginners of any age.

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction to player skills and roles.......2003-09-19

This book is a good introduction to the roles of the players and the skills they have to learn. It would be suitable for someone new to playing rugby and wanting an overview, or a spectator wanting to learn more about what they are watching. There probably isn't enough detail in the descriptions for players wanting to improve their technique.

The book is loaded full of colour photographs of rugby players in action, mostly from New Zealand domestic matches and international matches. One thing I would have liked is more diagrams supporting the text (even in exchange for some of the photos). There are hardly diagrams at all.

The text is well-written and easy to understand.

3 out of 5 stars A nice start for novices.......2002-09-08

The book is very handy and actually has nice photographs, but it is targeted to a novice or a "fresh start" rugby enthusiast. Keeping this point in mind, it is a remarkable work, both in style and guise, because skills, tactics and rules are clearly explained.

The text is simple but quite serious, hence being rugby an "informal" sport, a better explanation should be devised for some particular events during the match. The lineout is a typical example: in fact the rule, which permit an aided 6-foot plus gentleman to hover in the air waiting for the oval, must have been thought up by a three-quarter who flew Harriers (the famous vertical landing fighter airplane!). This strange engagement is characterized by a devastatingly human exertion, that is the pathological damage this may cause the unsuspecting jumper's groin when his shorts is pulled sharply upwards by two herculean "thrusters"! So far for the tactics!!

Another amusing rule too seriously explained is when the front rows collapse during a set scrum. The refree (the usual scapegoat for italian fans!!!) gives a penalty against the prop that goes down first. He may be the less potent of the two, the more tired or simply could quite easily have slipped, but no!, the sanction is quick, steadfast and irrevocable: he did on purpose, shame on him! Since the international refrees are not robust specimen of human race, with large diameter trunks and necks, they wrongfully suppose that above huge necks there is little capacity for gray matter. So the modern prop will use this misconception to his advantage when there is a scrum nearby the Opposition try line. Thus, by all means, usually illegal, he will check the opposite prop's thrust while collapsing, therefore automatically gaining a penalty kick from the best position ever. That's what we call a teamwork!!

That said, I will recommend this volume to anyone interested in this wonderful game, but getting in touch with its rules for the first time.

I bought this book and later I bought "Totally Guitar" by Tony Bacon. So with Totally Guitar Totally Guitar: The Definitive Guide you get two books for the price of one.

This is a great encyclopedia, but I find it still lacks some information concering the big Far East brands.

5 out of 5 stars Really good info on vintage guitar corporations........2006-12-05

This book is very professional and entertaining to read. It covers all of the basics and then some. It is probably 10 yrs old by now, but the info shared is relevant and the pics bring you back to yesteryear. This book includes even the older obsolete popular guitars, such as Harmony which was mass produced and found on nearly every other teenagers bunk bed during the 70's. I have 3 vintage guitars, Fender Tele, Hamer Special and now Ibanez 540 S and these are all included. Also is Danelectro which I own and the history includes the company from NJ to when it shut down to Korean models. Very good coffee table book for anyone who is moderately interested in guitars. I have seen all of the books out there and this is probably the most direct and simple one without condescending tone.

5 out of 5 stars Great history and beautiful photos.......2005-11-25

This book is now showing up as a remainder at under ten dollars-- at that price there's no reason anyone interested in electric guitars would not have a copy. It offers a generic history of the electic guitar that will be familiar to anyone at all versed in the intstrument; what's unique here is the comprehensive coverage of factory-built guitars over the past 80 years. Every company I've heard of (and several I've not) is covered. Gibson, Fender, et al. get long sections and dozens of photos, but even lesser-known importers like Aria are given strong coverage. For those who have only heard about makes like Mosrite, Teisco, Framus, etc. there are great photos and strong histories. As an aspiring guitar builder I bought the book for the photos; the well written text is an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! A Complete and Thorough Guitar Book! .......2007-04-16

I have several guitar books as I have been learning to play for the past 2 years. I have alot of instructional books and learned bits and pieces. This book is an excellent resource and covers almost every topic in great detail. Everything from chords, picking, blues, rock and country guitar, guitar effects, amps, etc. Also includes instruction and pictures on repairing and maintaining your guitar, adjusting the action, changing strings, etc. A valuable resource and worth owning yourself.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding instructional which stands apart from similar-sounding guitar 'how-to' guides.......2005-09-05

Want to learn guitar from a book? There are plenty of slimmer guides on the market - but none with the depth and detail of Moran Illustrated Guitar, which packs in color illustrations of techniques. From playing different kinds of chords to power rock, single notes, slides, string muting and much more, Moran Illustrated Guitar packs in the step-by-step close-up color photos so it's hard to go wrong. An outstanding instructional which stands apart from similar-sounding guitar 'how-to' guides.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best Educative Book .......2005-08-03

This book I would extremely, highly recommended for beginners and I mean it. Sure I might be just a kid but trust me I have this book and I know a good book when I see one. Its more likely to keep you occupied since it in color and it shows you pictures of everything so you can see and understand the things it tells you to do. This book tells the history, parts, basic concepts, how to hold, fretting, picking, tuning, how to practice on, how to play a guitar for all acoustic, classical, and electric types of guitars. It shows you practicing techniques and doesn't just say to do things you don't understand. Teaches you to play different chords (barre chords and power chords), strumming patterns, single notes, and suggests songs for practice. Teaches you to read tablature(sheet music for guitars), chord diagrams, guitar symbols. Teaches different types of music rock, blues, folk, country, and classical guitar. Great thing about it is you should buy this book before purchasing a guitar because it gives you a lot of tips on which type of guitar you want to purchase. Explains "all" the care and maintainace required in a guitar and "all" its accessories. Mentions home recording for people who are starting to make bands, CDs or stuff. It has suggestions for reference material as well if you can't find the information you want. I don't think I disliked this book at all. For all the tiny details they might of not included I would look at the reference material for that. They don't specifically talk about certain guitars but more in general. (...)

5 out of 5 stars Another Maran success... .......2005-07-04

Maran Graphics has once again come out with a book that absolutely rocks... Maran Illustrated Guitar.

Content: Guitar Basics; Getting Ready To Play; Reading Music; Playing Basic Chords; Playing Barre Chords And Power Chords; Playing Single Notes; Articulation Techniques; Playing Rock Guitar; Playing The Blues; Playing Folk And Country Music; Playing Classical Guitar; Buying A Guitar; Guitar Accessories; Guitar Care And Maintenance; Home Recording; Quick Reference; Index

As with all other Maran Illustrated books, they've done an excellent job combining clear photos and instructive illustrations to guide you during the learning process. They even use multiple exposure photos with "ghosting" to show fingering sequences so that you can tell what movement should be combined with finger positioning. Very nicely done. In addition to just showing you how to play, they also cover the history of guitars and the masters of the instrument. It ends up giving you an appreciation for the instrument that you don't normally see in a "how to play" book. I like how they go beyond mere mechanics to show you how to care for your instrument, from stringing to cleaning to transportation. Basically, this covers the entire spectrum of the subject.

I've often wanted to learn to play the guitar. My wife plays and one of my sons play. I can't say that I have a lot of time to learn it right now, but at least I now have the main tool I need to help me get there when I'm ready. Excellent book, and highly recommended if you want to learn to play...

      5 out of 5 stars The best beginner's book I've seen!.......2005-06-25

Back in high school (a LONG time ago) I dabbled in guitar, but haven't touched one in decades. I've been seriously thinking about taking up this instrument again when, lo and behold, a review copy of "Maran's Illustrated Guitar" showed up in my mailbox -- probably because I've reviewed other books with creative graphics layouts. It certainly wasn't because of any expertise on the guitar! But God works in strange ways, they say...

This book is absolutely the best beginner's guide I've seen, and the one I'm actually using to learn the guitar. It covers everything from the history of the guitar, famous guitarists, types of guitars (classical, acoustic, electric), how to buy, clean, repair, change strings, perform adjustments and maintenance -- and of course, how to play it. Not only does this book have the usual chord charts, it has actual photos showing how to place the fingers on the frets. And it doesn't just cover basic chords. It also includes a section on reading music and playing single notes -- something I did not find in other beginner's books. After learning the basics, you can turn to specific chapters for pointers on Rock, Blues, Country, Folk, or Classical guitar, with different picking and strumming styles clearly explained. (For each section, the model holding the guitar is dress appropriately for the genre -- a nice touch!) There is also a chapter on amplifers and other equipment for electric guitar players, and a section on setting up a home recording studio.

One of the best things I learned is that there are now electronic tuners for guitars (and most other instruments) -- something that did not exist in my high school days. I immediately bought one. As with everything else in this book, there was a clear description of the types of tuners, the pros and cons of each, etc., complete with photos.

The graphical layout is very well done and pleasing to the eye. The photos are interspersed with the text to get away from the boring "Gutenberg box" effect. Another plus is that the binding is flexible enough for the book to lay flat while playing -- a major convenience when both of your hands are busy holding the guitar. In short, this is a beautiful book and a pleasure to use. Highly recommended!

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A beautiful treatment of a "how-to" subject..........2005-06-13

I was recently sent a copy of the book Maran Illustrated Piano from the maranGraphics Development Group. It's another subject treatment using the "maran illustrated" technique, and again it's an excellent work...

Chapter List: Piano Basics; The Basics of Reading Music; Basic Hand Positions; Playing Scales; Playing Chords; Beyond the Basics of Reading Music; Tips to Improve Your Playing; Special Playing Techniques; Improvising and Playing with Others; Styles of Music; Buying and Caring for Your Piano; Quick Reference; Index

The Maran books use a graphic-intensive format with liberal use of color and heavy-stock paper. With Frank Horvat as the technical consultant, they take the reader through an informative history of the piano, famous composers, and the structure of the piano (along with the various styles and related instruments). From there, they get into how to read music as well as the basic hand positioning for playing. The material on reading music is well done for anyone who needs to acquire that skill, even if they aren't interested in the piano. The book then starts to show how to play scales, chords, and progressively more difficult pieces. It would be very easy to use this book to do your own self-learning program, and it'd be a great way to figure out if you want to take the next step and find a piano teacher to help you progress.

The illustrations and photography of hand placement jump off the pages with the high-quality printing and paper. The pictures of Horvat sitting at the piano look a little stilted, but there's only so much "action" you can add to those settings. The only photo series I didn't much care for in the book have to do with the piano pedals. The pedal photos have someone's black shoe, white sock, and bare leg in the frame. That's just wrong... :-)

Shoes and socks aside, this is an excellent choice if you are looking to learn how to play the piano on your own. You will gain a solid foundation with the instrument, and from there you can take it to whatever level appeals to you...

4 out of 5 stars And now Yes, You Too can really learn to play the piano!.......2005-06-07

For all the many self-help, how-to books published The Maran Family has polished the book-led guide to learning to a fare-thee-well. This well-conceived and very well written book is an excellent introduction to the joys of sitting down in front of a piano keyboard and actually creating music instead of fantasies.

As one of the maranGraphics books (others include such wide ranging topics as Weight Training, Computer Guides, Dog training, Guitar, Yoga, and Knitting and Crocheting!), this volume uses the technical consulting of Frank Horvat, a composer, performer and piano teacher, and then applies the approach to the keyboard in a highly visual series of photographs and schematics that begin a survey of the types of keyboard instruments, the history of the piano, and progress to the basics of what makes a piano make music and ultimately walks the willing student through a very sound technique of learning.

As a life-long pianist I am amazed at the facility developed in this beautifully designed book. For those who question learning to play the piano by a 'how to' book, just peruse the careful steps and clarity of instruction offered by this helpful guide. Much musicology is included and many examples of fine piano music are used in the lessons. Whether it is the classical route you wish or the popular medium of chord based music or the intricacies of blues and improvisation, the steps are here. At the end of the book is a fine discussion on how to choose your piano from the many types that exist and even a discussion on the various periods of piano music history (although brief these are succinctly to the point).

Terrific for the adults who moan 'if I'd only taken lessons as a child' as well for the young students who are willing to commit to the goal of learning to 'make their own music', this Illustrated Guide to the Piano is a solid source of didactics. And for those addicted to the computer, there are even "MP3 files available to listen to and play along with for all the chords, scales, exercises and practice pieces in this book." Truly a book for the 21st Century! Grady Harp, June 05

Without going into a lot of detail...this is THE guitar chord book. Loaded with chords, explanations, fretting pictures, styles.

...if you looking for a thorough chord listing, this is definately it!

4 out of 5 stars Great book for visual learning types. Good tips for chord usage too........2006-07-29

I picked this book after looking through several at the bookstore. What I liked about it was that it had lots of chords and it gave you some of the "logic" behind the chord and why/where you might use them. Most other books just have lots of chord pictures laid out on the page which I did not find helpful.

Also this book shows an actual photo of a hand playing the chord which I liked. The book's tablature (chord pictures) shows which note is the root in the chord which I also liked.

Another cool thing is that the book is spiral bound so that it will lay open flat. This is really helpful when you're actually playing your guitar chords and not holding the book.

So while this book doesn't have 1000's of chords like some do (it doesn't get into a lot of "fancy" chords--suspended, 11ths, 13ths, etc) it does give you 500 of the most useful ones. I also like the appendixes that have more blues, jazz, rock chords.

It's a good book all in all.

Got this book in 1988, wow its still on my shelf, ufortunately I cut some of the rock stars pictures out and pinned them on my wall (also in the late 80's). Well, I do not even feel worthy of this book, its for the original hard rockers that can remember all these groups. I will sell it, I cut out Bob Marley, and most of the reggae guys pictures only.
