A good little book.......2007-03-15
A very handy book for "instant" weather forcasting. Interesting to read and written with a bit of humor. The only shortcoming is the arrangment of the photographs of the different clouds, they are not in logical sequence.
for newbies to weather .......2006-06-27
OK book for newbies or beginners to this interesting hobby(uninteresting if in Michigan)
Small Gem of a Book..........2006-06-18
This small hard to find book (unless you order it online) starts with a basic premise: to predict the weather you need to do 2 things-determine the direction of the wind and identify the clouds currently in the sky. That being said, I would consider this book a great primer for anyone interested in naked eye weather forecasting.
The book includes color cloud charts, discusses weather folklore, precipitation, warm and cold fronts, and volcanic eruptions.
This a general primer. The information is not spoon fed to the reader.
The strength of this approach is Rubin's writing is entertaining and lively, and will enourage you to not only make your own weather predictions, but to also seek more information outside the scope of the book.
The weakness is that some of the material is incomplete. The book was completed by Louis Rubin's children with the help of a meteorologist after Rubin passed away (based on the Introduction), using Rubin's cloud photo collections and his collected writings.
As a result, some of the material is incomplete. For example, Rubin describes the 4 types of clouds and the 10 specific clouds most associated with weather changes. You then have to search all over the book to find those 10 clouds, and even then, you're not sure (based on the prefixed names) if you're looking at the right photographs. I suspect at the time of his passing, Rubin's cloud photo collection was far from complete.
That being said, I still liked the book, consider it a keeper, and respect Rubin's work in this area as an amateur meteorologist.
Great Book.......2005-09-13
If your into forcasting weather, or just want to know how to, this book is for you.

Great Little Book.......2007-07-24
This book might not be the singular answer to solving the global climate crisis, but it's a fantastic, fun little book with a variety of ideas no matter your commitment or ability.
It's the perfect size for stockings (which is my plan!), but unfortunately also the right size for getting, appreciating, and then losing or forgetting.
Could be fun with kids, and getting them involved in picking something each day or week to focus upon to help save the earth.

Book Description
All human beings are made in the image of God. But for what purpose were you made? The biblical answer is clear: you are to imitate God in order to bring God's presence into your life and the lives of others.
This practical guidebook to repairing the world--often in simple everyday ways--details the biblical accounts of what God does, not what God says: God creates, blesses, rests, calls, comforts, cares, repairs, wrestles, gives and forgives. For each of God's actions, this provocative resource suggests what might be on God's To-Do List for you, the many ways you can make small and great differences in the lives of others and find the ultimate source of meaning for your own.
An inspiring gift to uplift your spirit and share with others, whatever your faith, you can do God's To-Do List.

God's To-do List: 103 Ways to Be an Angel and Do God's Work on Earth.......2007-01-15
God's To-do List lives up to its title. It is a heartwarming and practical look at unassuming ways people do God's work everyday. Wolfson challenges readers to do the same in their own life. He provides suggestions and opportunities to personalize their list. It is difficult to come away from this book without recognizing angels in your own life and believing that each of us can make a difference. It's a great gift and those I have given it to have purchased it to give as gifts also.

Throughout his award-winning photographic career, Philippe Bourseiller has recorded the splendors of untamed nature, from the immensities of the ice floe to the fury of the volcano, from the vast open spaces of Patagonia to the aridity of the Sahara. This experience has given him unique insight into both the richness and the fragility of our environment. In 365 Ways to Save the Earth, he takes the reader on a daily journey through our planet, revealing its hidden face.
For every day of the year he presents a stunning photograph and a simple, environment-friendly action that enables the reader to participate in the protection of planet Earth. Beautiful Pictures and Helpful Tips.......2007-03-22
This is a compact hardback book with some incredible photographs of various places and things in our natural world. It does have some good tips for helping the environment although these suggestions are basically repeated towards the middle of the book. The book is worth it for the pictures alone.
beautiful!.......2007-02-22
The pictures are all beautiful! The ways they have to help the Earth are well organized and very practical!
Good ideas, however it disobeys its own first suggestion :-(.......2006-04-16
Good photos and points made, but #1: Recycle?
Yes, yes, that's why not ONE page of this book is made from post-consumer material (i.e., the paper stock that this book uses isn't even recycled, despite recycling being the first point made in the book!)
SO, #1: don't buy this book, get it from a library instead.
Great Green Gift Book.......2006-03-21
I have ordered this book as a gift for numerous friends and family members. It is a beautiful and thought-provoking introduction to environmentally-friendly behaviors in a time when most Americans aren't thinking about the problems we have created in our environment.
365 Ways to Save the Earth is a wonderful book.......2006-02-25
I bought 5 copies as gifts for Christmas.
I gave it to some friends, to my grandmother. The whole family was looking at the beautiful pictures. I had my uncle reading the daily inspiring messages.
"It brings me peace when I read this book, a day at a time" my grandmother said.
Highly recommended! I even kept a copy for myself.

Customer Reviews:
Do you want to read something fun?.......2007-09-03
Knight does a wonderful job of writing something that you can just enjoy. I have gotten stumped(read that as bored) with too many books lately and this book didn't do that.
The setting is a post apocalyptic Earth which the author does a moderately good job of describing. Much of the history is left untold, but it's alright because this is not one of Stirling's books that spends as much time focused on world development as anything else. Let me just say that man is not at the top of the food chain and is truly in a pitched struggle for survival.
Now, the fun part is that things get going after about 75-100 pages of building to a more interesting segment. There are lots and lots of holes in the fabric of the story, don't let this deter you because the story really gets going and the action offsets the missing information.
Now, this is the first book in the series and the publisher should have asked from much better explanation of things. The author seems more focused no just giving you a fun story and less on building a fully depicted world.
I really, really like the book and the gradual transition of the main character from teen-ager to adult. This is a short book, so just pound through it and enjoy the ride!!!
I don't read Science Fiction, but I enjoyed this book........2007-04-05
I bought Way of the Wolf because I loved E.E.Knight's Age of Fire series so much. I dove in with a lot of trepidation, fully expecting to find it as boring and dry as I'd found other Sci-fi books. Instead, I discovered vampires magic and even shapeshifting gods! I am hooked. This is no ordinary Sci-fi!
If you dig science fiction, horror, or western adventure, you'll dig this book.
Bleak but Endearing...Can't Wait to Read the Next in the Series.......2006-11-06
The main character in this book is David Valentine, an orphan taken in by the local priest and we are shown his general development from childhood, through his training, and into young adulthood, with the parts about his training and young adulthood being more detailed than his childhood. In the Way of the Wolf, Valentine is chosen by a "good" Kurian, a Lifeweaver, to become a Wolf, an elite warrior with the finely honed senses and strength of a wolf. The purpose of the Wolves is to help destroy the minions of the Kurians (Reapers) and protect the safety of the Free Territory.
What we get in the Way of the Wolf (the first book in the Vampire Earth Series) is a post-apocalyptic world complete with characters that ring true (even if they are a little flat and one dimensional)...here you see the best and worst of human nature close up and while the world this new world is a violent and unpredictable, we still find flashes of happiness, humor and love as humanity survives and adapts to life in the Kurian Order. Additionally because Knight places the story not too far into the future, we still have characters that remember life before the Kurian order, so the author cleverly gives himself access to literature, television and other popular culture references that might not otherwise be available and I think this helps keep the story from being too bleak and depressing and keeping it accessible/familiar to the reader.
The way of the Wolf was in the Science Fiction section...but I think it has broader appeal than that and could be considered a mix of horror, sci-fi, mysticism, and dystopian society. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this...and while I'm a true horror fan and was a bit disappointed that this isn't more about the "vampires" I wasn't disappointed in the overall feel of the book. It's dark, depressing (sometimes oppressively so) and just plain disgusting in places...but it also has an authentic feel to it that is very appealing despite the bleakness of it all. The story is told in a kind of slice-of-life fashion that at give the book a bit of a disjoined feel...but which serves, I think to give a real rounded look at life under the Kurian order from the "free territory" to those living with the reality of day to day life living directly under the influence of the Kurians and their minions. Since this is a "debut" novel, I can only assume Knight's style and storyline will only get better, so I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this series, as I'm quite anxious to see what becomes of Valentine! I give it a B+, it's a good, entertaining read...but it's not without problems.
Waste of Paper.......2006-08-30
When I originally heard of this series I thought that it would be one that I'd liked, however after reading the first one, The Way Of The Wolf, I'm greatly disappointed.
Knight creates an interesting and somewhat unique idea for a world, and borrows from Lovecraft somewhat, which is a good start. However he spends way too much time giving you background info over and over again. There's no character development at all. In fact the main character Valentine has no real personality and is very one dimensional. Overall there is no real plot to this story, it is a series of episodes spliced together and when you think he's going to start taking it beyond the training sessions or background info but it always ends too soon.
A story that goes no where.
Innovative approach to an old legend.......2006-07-14
Knight has taken a surprisingly different approach to tie the science fiction/space opera story line to another fiction favorite, the vampire legends. In this book earth has been invaded by an alien race. Turns out this is the second time around and the invaders, who feed on life force, are the forgotten source of the vampire legends. The real innovation is that the story line is not at all in the horror genre, rather it is a military fiction/space opera story of the human resistance to this invasion. It is refreshing to see an author come up with a very well thought out and new story line for a science fiction fantasy line. I eagerly look forward to his future books on the Vampire Earth.

Ed McGaa, an Oglala Sioux also called Eagle Man, here presents an environmental, personal, and global philosophy of balance. Using traditional Native American spirituality as a framework, Nature's Way is a call for a major change in the way people relate to the world. McGaa, who has studied under Sioux holy men Chief Eagle Feather and Chief Fool's Crow, begins each chapter by describing the qualities of an animal or plant that represents a particular value, such as the wolf ("one among many") or the eagle ("observation"). Personal anecdotes, tribal legends, and stories from around the world support each idea, and the book's somewhat rambling structure is very conversational. McGaa's ideas are not new, but they are well-presented. If we begin to live by the principles that are demonstrated by the world itself, he writes, we will then be in harmony with the world, rather than taking from it destructively. The book's final chapters outline problems such as global warming and overpopulation, which threaten the survival of life on earth. Nature's Way will appeal to readers seeking a hopeful spiritual approach for dealing with seemingly insurmountable problems. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
Now in paperback! US bestselling author of Mother Earth Spirituality returns with a call for a spiritual awakening to create a new global culture.
Beginning with the ways of the Lakota Sioux and branching outward, Sioux tribal leader Ed McGaa, known as Eagle Man, shows the error of using animals and the natural world as a whole for economic and political gain. He then offers everyday lessons and values gleaned from Nature that endure for all times and people.
In this call for spiritual awakening, McGaa explains how we can create a new global culture based not on dominance over nature for economic and political gain, but on values that endure for all times and all people. Nature's Way explores Native American belief systems, oppression of Native Americans by the dominant society, the desacralisation of Nature, and the complicity of institutional religion.
Taking on religion, politics, and culture, McGaa provides a template for readers – a path designed by Nature that anyone can follow. Using the lessons of eagle, bear, lion, wolf, orca, owl, tiger, buffalo, rat, deer – even the cottonwood tree, Nature's Way teaches all of us how we can overcome religious intolerance, treat women and men equally, preserve our environment, and live in peace.
Customer Reviews:
what an utter disappointment.......2007-02-03
5 stars for putting together anthropomorphism and spiritualism
0 stars for putting together anthropomorphism and geopoliticalism
I bought this book on the principles behind the title: native wisdom from anthropomorphism.
What it turned into was one mans attempt to use anthropomorphism to justify a political mind set.
For the first 1/3rd of the book, the author gets credit for achieving the purpose of this book. The rest of the book should be ripped out -- only then will this book achieve what it is suppose to be about.
A wake-up call for space ship earth.......2007-01-18
Ed McGaa has written a compelling book that combines Native beliefs in Mother Earth Spirituality and a wake-up call for the two-leggeds that dominate our planet. We ignore the signs of environmental disaster at our own peril. If you have any concern for our planet this is an important book to read and share. Eagle Man is a truly talented writer who is willing to tell it like it is. As Native peoples have always know, it's not about us and the greater glory of man, but it's about our relationship to all living things and ultimately the protection of mother earth. Mitakuye Oyasin (we are all related)
Beautiful Animal Analogies for Earth Ecology.......2005-04-27
This is an intensely important book for our time. As part Cherokee, I relate to the Native American outlook in living in harmony with the natural world, and I love the author's use of each of various animals as representing a particular sort of ability and outlook that modern man needs in order to sufficiently detach from a technological mindset that falsely looks to ever more technology to save us from the pressing problems that technology itself has created.
We need to remember that, during the recent Asian tsunami, various kinds of animals, including elephants, somehow sensed the approaching danger and fled to high ground before the waves struck the shores. This book is marvelous in its clever ways of catching our attention and helping redirect our attention to more natural ways of seeing and understanding.
I've waited years to find a book like this!.......2004-11-05
As a child I was never satisfied with the Christian religion I was exposed to. A vengeful God just didn't seem to fit, it didn't feel like truth. I've spent a lot of spare time studying religions and philosophies. Bits from some disciplines seemed to be right but I couldn't find the perfect fit for me. This book did! Although I'm rather pale, I must have the soul of an American Indian.
I was especially interested in his research that connected ancient Europeans with North American natives.
His reasons for why our world is out of balance are quite accurate, and unfortunately returning the balance in the near future doesn't seem likely.
Healing The Earth.......2004-10-25
Another good lesson. Wisdom creates Knowlege which leads to Understanding which can create the awareness that is needed to survive on a planetary scale. This is an awesome read to share with as many people as possible. Creates a good "thinking space".
Rates right up there with "Mother Earth Spirituality" but leads one into deeper thought and awareness.

Misleading Title.......2007-02-18
Considering this book is largely the personal musings of one man (rather than a scholarly take on the subject,) perhaps a better title would have been "A Druid's Way." Nothing to write home about here. Instead I highly suggest Graeme Talboy's "Way of the Druid."
The Modern Druid not Druidism .......2005-05-23
The religion practiced by the ancient Celts and their priests the Druids, is and will always be a mystery. It is sad to see people wishing, hoping, and praying that they could defy logic and physics and go back in time figuratively or otherwise and follow "Druidism." The sad truth is they would probably tell the Druids they were not worshipping or performing their rites in a historically accurate way either! What these folks believe actually happened is just pure fantasy. They have no crystal ball into the past and are just as at a loss as the historians and archeologists investigating the ancient Celts using scientific means.
The fact is Druidry is a modern manifestation and at best based upon guesses at what the ancient Celtic religion was. Philip makes no bones about it. He is not saying in any of his texts that what he is presenting is the unchanged religion of the Celts. Would we or could we really follow the ancient religion in its entirety today? Do we have the same exact needs, hopes, or world-views? A great deal of history has happened since then.
What Philip does provide is another spiritual path or way for the modern individual; the Druid Way. The Druid Way is not an ancient religion brought out of context for a modern age but a modern look at an ancient religion which can be of use and import for us today.
I have researched the ancient Celts extensively and yet this book is one of my favourites! It is a very enjoyable read.
Bright, Mercurial, Energizing.......2004-07-08
Philip Carr-Gomm's intelligence - not unlike Andrew Harvey's - has a bright, mercurial and energizing quality that immediately stimulates interest and attention. Far superior to a rote historical study, his book is an experiential pilgrimage, a first-hand account that could only be charted by someone as sufficiently steeped in the ideas from the inside of his skin as is Philip. And here is where it begins: high on the downlands above Lewes on the South Downs Way, as he stands on Itford Hill at the outset of his circular journey of excursion and return. From here, in twenty-one chapters, he unfolds a compelling narrative that is both story and exploration, memory and discourse, homily and lyric exposition, coloured with his own immediate psychic perception.
`I plead very guilty to being indeed my own ancestor', as Nuinn is quoted in the book...and what is everywhere present here is the presence of the past that the whole landscape resonates, and that Philip unearths, naming original place names, tracking lost paths gone to grass and cut through by our present roads - and he does so with a sense of detail reminiscent of Gilbert White, though his canvas is larger.

This whole book is a delight!.......2004-07-08
This whole book is a delight. It is the diary of a sacred journey, through sacred space, and through the heart and mind, as well as a useful practical guide to the countryside and its associations and history. It is a book to use and to keep and to remember.

Great read........2000-07-12
Once again, Philip Carr-Gomm is NOT an anthropologist and hisbooks are NOT about the ancient druids. Druidry is a modern beliefwith only occasional ties to events/beliefs of 2000 years ago, just as modern Christianity is.
I finished this book with a feeling of peace, it was almost a meditation to read it. However, I got very little practical information out of it. I certainly don't feel that it is "a complete description of the Druid Way." The comments by the author are closer to the book than the "synopsis" is. Wonderfully written, this book brings together a stroll around the countryside with the grief of a loss of a friend to show a path to enlightenment through the power and beauty of the earth.
...if you want to know about ancient druids, check out "The Druids" by Stuart Piggot or "The Celts" by T. G. E. Powell. The fact of the matter is the historical druids committed very little to paper until after they were assimilated into the Culdee church. And that all had the taint of Christianity on it.

Book Description
Illustrates how maps tell us as much about the people and the powers which create them, as about the places they show. Presents historical and contemporary evidence of how the human urge to describe, understand and control the world is presented through the medium of mapping, together with the individual and environmental constraints of the creator of the map.

A Book on Maps with Meaning..........2000-12-27
Finding this book in the geography section of one of my favorite bookstores was, well, "a find," and especially so because there is a lot masquerading as "geography" or "mapping" these days.
This, as it happens, is the real thing. The British authors have constructed a kind of dream volume for those who want to boost the visual or geographic literacy of their friends, children, neighbors, or students. 'Tisn't a book just for geographers, though those in that profession will love this item. It's at least as much for the many, many, many folks in the world who understand that they don't know what they should about how the world is expressed in maps, and who feel more than a passing need to remedy that inadequacy.
Who's this for? I'd say anyone who has read and learned from the work of Edward Tufte, and as much, for those who revel in the writings of Mark Monmonier, cartography's current gray eminence and a brilliant scholar to boot. But this is also for those who just love maps: The Thelin and Peak SLAR map of the lower 48 states, Erwin Raisz's work, or the luminous cartographer of such great as Eduard Imhof.
The sole drawback is the price -- that's a pocketful of change, and were the ducats sought a few less, this would be a five-star choice, hands down.
Read it, love it, and learn.
