Book Description
This is an omnibus edition of two books that have radically altered our understanding of Indian history. This Fissured Land presents an interpretive ecological history of the sub-continent. Ecology and Equity is a spirited intervention into the environment-development debate.
Book Description
This guide to coaching female athletes of all ages shows how to build a team and provides invaluable advice on the differences between coaching males and females. The authors include exercises that foster teamwork and develop essential skills. They also answer parents' most common questions, such as how to tell if the coach is doing a good job and what to do if a child wants to quit. Filled with stories about the Olympic and World Cup championship teams, this useful handbook is infused throughout with DiCicco's philosophy that at every level playing soccer (or any sport) is about "playing hard, playing fair, playing to win, and having fun."
Customer Reviews:
Pretty "Good".......2003-07-03
I enjoyed this book. It was exectly what I expected, a little bit of insight, a little bit of instruction and a little bit of personal observation.
It is a great book for any new coach or someone looking to get some ideas, but it wont make you a better coach or change your life.
Good new coach book with many team building exercises.......2003-01-21
I read this book after reading Anson Dorrance's Training Soccer Champions and Lauren Gregg's The Champions Within. This book is better for the new coach who may be just forming their coaching attitudes and style. For coaches of totally dedicated Premier level teams or higher, the other two books are probably better. Catch Them Being Good shares many of the viewpoints of the other two books on building teams, motivating players, and forming strong positive attitudes. The other two books had better technical information and (perhaps because I read them first) struck me more powerfully than this one. This book was more readable for a beginning coach. I think the team building exercises are a real plus and are the biggest items I will take away from reading this book.
My Experience.......2002-12-04
Ok, this book is wonderful. Tony and Colleen put it all together for you coaches and parents out there! The truth in black and white. I am a product of this type of coaching. I was blessed to have been a soccer player who was led by Dr. Colleen Hacker at Pacific Lutheran University. She caught me being good more often than bad and I thrived mostly as a young woman but also on the soccer field. The book takes you through the life of a season from the very beginning to the end. Tony gives examples of experiences he has had with players/coaches on the US National Team. A valuable tool and great food for thought.

Customer Reviews:
Coaching Girls.......2007-10-18
I have coached girls soccer for 8 years and I still found a few nuggets inside. I am really using the stuff on social issues and diet for teem girls.
excellent beginner's guide to soccer.......2007-08-09
Easy to read and understand. Good pictures. Very helpful if you have never coached before or just want to improve your knowledge of coaching.
Comprehensive Coaching Guide.......2007-04-10
New coaches will learn everything they need to know. In addition to the drills and strategies, you'll also learn how to motivate kids, how to deal with their parents, and much more.
Must Have For All Coaches.......2006-03-10
This is a must have book for soccer coaches, especially coaches of girls soccer. I also recommend it for coaches of boys since 98% of the material translates over. The book not only details performing specific skills, tactics and team management, but also covers team and individual motivation and correction styles. This is where the book becomes a little more specific to females then males, which is a good thing because there are a lot of male coaches that coach all girl teams, and they need to understand what motivates boys doesn't work with most girls. While boys tend to be motivated by accomplishment, girls are motivated by relationships. Understanding that will be rewarding and help you bond with your players and develop them as a team.
Read this book and you will dramatically improve your coaching!
The ultimate guide for coaches of girls' soccer teams.......2006-03-05
This book is all it claims to be. Clear, useful, full of great advice and fun training games and drills. Not a book about the author, but a real accent on the girls themselves. Brilliant.
It's been a bible for me for two years and I've recommended it to all my fellow coaches (who all want to know my 'secrets'!!)
Thanks John!

Customer Reviews:
Great General Book.......2007-01-11
Great book outlining a proven method of setting up a successful program which was what I was looking for.
What every coach should know about building and maintaining a football program.......2006-12-08
Coach Allan Trimble has a 111-9 record and six consecutive Class 6A state championship titles. And his winning list goes on and on...
His book is a step by step guide on how to start and maintain a successfull football program.
This book covers the I-formation (power running game with a wide open passing attack) and a versatile multiple defensive system. Which, he used to win a 32-2 career playoff record and 25 consecutive playoff victories.
This book is very user friendly. Coach Trimble uses tons of pictures and diagrams. If you do not understand what he is talking about, all you have to do is look at the pictures. If you are looking for a play book, here it is. This book is great for youth to college level.
If you want to read about another coach that has reached the same level of success, read "COACHING FOOTBALL SUCCESSFULLY" BY Bob READE
One of the Most Usefull Books.......2005-08-04

Read First Version, am buy this Version.......2004-08-26
Excellent Read. I am a U11 and U8 coach and this book is writen for High School and College coaching, however, it brings great insight (speeking as a player) that other books do not talk about. Excellent Read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent at every level.......2001-05-22
This book is good.
I accidentally bought two copies. I brought one to practice and showed it to a couple coaches whose teams were practicing nearby to see if they'd be interested in buying it from me. They leafed through it, and in seconds were engaged in a friendly but quite serious argument about who would get to buy it from me.
This book is really good.
It has made a huge difference in how I approach coaching. It is at once personable and professional. The scope is very broad, covering technical skills, tactical considerations, and some strategic discussion. Each topic is presented clearly and in startling depth. Every coach or player will learn a lot about the game here.
What is particularly unique and useful about this book is that it discusses in detail how to approach a season -- how to prepare before the season starts, how to engage a team from the first, what sort of considerations are important at what times, how to approach the off season. It focuses not only on the game, but the role of a coach as an influence on a young life.
This book is really, really good!!
An excellent overview on coaching soccer.......2000-07-27
I coach a youth team (12-18 yrs old). This book gives me a good overview and understanding of what is required in coaching. Two keys to successful coaching: passion and knowledge. A good, motivating coach is one who manages to help his team to overachieve. A negative, critical coach will see his team underachieve. The author's love and respect for his players has transformed my approach to coaching. I have learned that people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.
Secondly, this book provides reasonable information on defensive and offensive tactics. I have been playing soccer for over 15 years in various leagues. But it was not until I read this book that I understood the game so much more. I also helps me to appreciate soccer. The defensive habits: covering goalside, inside and support are actually the foundation for attack as well. If you can get your team to play well with the basic defending habits, they will be able to grasp attacking formation and habits as well.
This book is a must read for all beginner and intermediate coach. It gives a great overview of soccer coaching. But you will probably need other resources for more help on more technical help: set pieces, different formation (4-4-2), (4-3-3). This book talks extensively on 3-5-2 formation, which is a direct and very flexible formation actually.
Thanks to Roy Rees for this book! Bravo!
Oustanding presentation with thorough coverage........1999-01-21
This is a must for coaches of all levels. It is well organized, easy reading with many great personal insights. The author is very thorough and has the chapters orginized. It is easy to follow and easy to go back and find topics for reference later. I highly reccomend this for anyone who is serious about coaching.
Excellent book, covering soccer coaching from A-Z........1998-11-19
In the past three years of coaching soccer I have read about two dozen books on the topic. This is the best I have found. This book covers some of the topics that I have searched in vain for such as preparing for matches and evaluating players. I recommend it highly.

Football Coaching 101.......2007-06-19
Just the coaching philosophy alone is reason enough to buy this book. Bob Reade is truly the epitome of what a football coach should. In addition, you get a great look the Augie Wing-T and the Double Dive Series.
IT IS A STEAL FOR THE PRICE.......2006-05-12
Coach Reade, Coached in both high school and college. He has a 146-21-4 winning record. He once won 60 games in a row. He has won 87% of his games. And the list goes on and on...
This book covers the Single Wing Offense and the defense he used to win 60 games in a row. He diagrams both his running and passing offense. If you are looking for a play book, here it is.
This is one of the best books on the market today. It is easy to read and full of information. It covers everything you need to know about starting a football program. I purchased it and I am glad I did.
I highly recommend it to all levels of coaching.
Wow..................2005-06-10
Whatever great things you hear or read about this book are true. I can't find words that properly give this book it's due. Totally amazing. An absolute MUST read for ANY level football coach.
Learn from a champion.......2005-03-22
The philosophies and insight into coaching are so close to my own that I am more confident than ever. The coaching plans and how to put a program together are the best I have ever seen. This book is so comprehensive that you will want to read it over and over to make sure that you didn't miss a thing. Finally, coach read shows his champion attitude from the beginning with a very humble approach that any would inspire anybody.
SIMPLY THE BEST! THE ONLY BOOK YOU WILL EVER NEED!.......2001-01-22
I am amazed with how much this book contains. I have purchased over a dozen football coaching books simply to find all of them updated and summarized in this masterpiece. I could go on forever with many more compliments but you get the idea.

Fair Play.......2002-11-19
I found this book provided innovative and real solutions to the various problems I've faced at my children's baseball and hockey games over the past several years.
Attention parents of athletes!.......2002-11-07
I am very fortunate that I have two sons that are naturally talented
athletes and are always selected to be on travel and all-star teams. When I
read Fair Play I was surprised to find that despite the success my sons have
had I learned that they could be excelling and learning more if they were
invovled in programs such as the book suggests and illustrates. This is
truly a book for every parent to read.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of information and ideas.......2007-10-05
For those of us who have never published this is an excellent place to start. I suggest reading it cover to cover, even if you already have a book ready for publishing, because it is so full of ideas for discovering your next publication and how to improve any you already have.
A handy manual.......2007-05-14
The major virtue of this book is its compendium approach to the problem its title states. For those who know absolutely nothing about getting published, it is a helpful manual. The major flaw of the book is that its content boils down to a Catch-22---i.e., to be published you must have X. But X cannot be gained without Y and to do Y, you must have X.
I don't know whether the author's ideas have been repeated by the many who write on the same subject or whether the information in the book is so generalized that everyone in the industry knows it. In any case, the book brings together in one volume most of the things a writer trying to get published should know. And it does suggest the cause of the difficulty of getting published. That in itself is worth the price of the book.
However, the book is lightweight. One continues to wonder how to get published without having to do the kind of social commingling the author, and so many others, recommends.
The book was published in 2000. It has not to my knowledge been updated. So, some of the information is out of date. As the author notes: "editors move around a lot."
Rubbish.......2006-07-20
Claims to give you an example of a complete synopsis suitable to send out to an editor and then gives you a blurb for the back of the book.
Suggest cold calling editors which would only make them hate you and think you are a...dummie
Gives publishers' general details of the sort you could look up in the phone book which would be no use to you whatever since you would need to know individual editors names, what they are interested in publishing etc... Most of the publishing houses listed require agents but there are pleanty of publishers who do consider unagented writers who are not listed in this book. I really wish I had bought a different book as this was a complete waste of money.
I am lucky I know enough about writing and publishing to know what a terrible inaccurate picture this book gives.
Definitely for Dummies.......2006-04-08
For the total novice who has very limited experience in writing and publishing, this book will be treasure trove, especially if that novice is planning to write a non-fiction book. For everyone else, this book has lesser value. I found it offered very little for writers of fiction. The information offered was also rather basic; for a person with a moderate amount of writing experience, the book offered little in the way of insightful information. The "for Dummies" part of the title definitely applies in this case.
Getting your book published for those who already have.......2004-03-26
This book was a disappointment. The reviews below pretty much reflect my problems with the book. Another problem I had concerned promotion. The authors assume that every aspiring author already has extensive media contacts. The sample proposal they give is from 2 college professors who have already published 2 books and have been featured on national TV and raidio. Now come on, most people who buy this book have not been on national TV and have no idea where to begin a promotional campaign. That's why they buy this book in the first place! Instead of telling us how to establish media contacts to use in the proposal, the authors simply tell us to use all our media contacts in the proposal. If I already had media contacts I wouldn't have needed the book.
In sum, if you havn't already published a few books and havn't been on national TV, this book will leave you with many lingering questions.

Customer Reviews:
Lyddie- a review by Kelsey.......2006-05-27
Lyddie is a very poor farm girl who has a crazed mother who believes everything to be a bad sign. Her and her brother Charlie are very close and will do anything for each other. When a bear intrudes on the family Lyddie's mother takes it as a bad sign. She takes her youngest children to her sisters house and leaves Charlie and lyddie to take care of the farm. They end up surviving the winter only to find out their mother has found separate jobs for them. The children reluctantly leave each other as they set out for their jobs. Lyddie is to work in a inn where she gets payed about fifty cents a week. While working at the inn Lyddie gets her chance to change her life. Lyddie goes to work at a factory. Lyddie is known as "close to her money and her friendships" but you will never learn of someone who works harder.
Lyddie finally learns there are many things wrong with the world then and are still major problems today. First, that women are not treated equally. She goes through what seems like a very long journey to learn all the lessons that she ends up learning in this book. I liked this book a lot. It taught me how to react to different things and that we should give everyone a chance no matter what race or religion they are. This book gave me a perspective which I couldn't see before and it wasn't a really big change I saw once I had read it but it did effect me when I saw what men thought of women back then. I think people should read this book just because it has an interesting plot line and can teach you different things you didn't think you could learn from this kind of book.
baanderson bookworm.......2006-04-04
For students in the middle grades or higher, Lyddie is a great read. It is a valuable resource for a social studies unit on slavery, the industrial revolution, the labor movement, yellow fever, or child labor. Lyddie is a symbol of strength, determination, and freedom. Paterson has created a strong central character and even though so much history is going on around her, it is on Lyddie that we continually focus our attention. I highly recommend book; very inspiring.
"we can still hop.".......2006-02-25
Paterson doesn't miss with this great historical fiction about a young girl's struggles. This is a great girl adventure book about dashing hopes and the strength and will to endure at all costs. The portrait of Vermont farm life and Lowell Mill girls and workers rights during the 1800s is dead on. This is great read and a great teaching tool.
Lyddie.......2006-01-23
Lyddie, written by Catherine Patterson was a well-written book by an excellent author, but if you like happy fairy tales this is not the book for you. This is a historical fiction novel about a girl who is working in a factory, in order to raise money to help keep her family together. Her factory life is horrible yet she struggles onward in order to save her family. You get caught up in wanting to help her through. Somehow she works it out yet there is never complete happiness within her. I personally did not like this book very much because of the sadness and disappointments in Lyddie's life. It was a very well written book as a whole though. If you enjoy historically accurate and heartfelt novels, I suggest you read this book.
Excellent Book.......2006-01-12
Lyddie is beautifully and precisely written and features an incredibly strong sense of place and time. The narrative is constructed in parallel with the plot, the characterization is strong and the characters are all believable and appropriate to their role in the novel. It would be nearly impossible to improve this book.
The story of Lyddie is interesting, engaging, and compelling. The plot unfolds at the right pace with enough tension to preserve interest and enough exposition to give the right amount of texture. This historical elements are precise and interesting--the most memorable portions of the narrative are a fusion of the story with the historical time and place. Factory life and social life descriptions are fascinating and convincing.

Product Description
Lyddie by Katherine Paterson. Narrated by Alyssa Bresnahan. Copyright 1991 by Katherine Paterson. P 1993 by Recorded Books, Inc. 93219 (5 cassettes/6.75 hours). Unabridged. ISBN 1-55690-851-2. "Lyddie Worthen is only 13 when her family is split up and she is forced to hire herself out at Cutler's tavern. Far from home, she despairs of ever seeing her loved ones again. Desperate, Lyddie makes her way to Concord, Massachusetts where she becomes a factory girl, working as a weaver in a textile maill. Six days a week Lyddie struggles at the back-breaking looms. In spite of the deafening noise of the machines, the sweltering hear, and the choking air thick with lint and dust, Lyddie holds onto her dream: to save enough money to pay off the family debts and bring everyone back home---together. But as Lyddie earns a reputation for being a hard and thrifty worker, she watches the grinding work at the factory sap the vitality of young girls---some no more than eight or nine---who were once healthy and strong. When a friend is threatened by one of the factory managers, Lyddie knows it is time to speak up. But if she does, she could lose her dream and everything she has worked for. Newbery-winner Katherine Paterson has rendered with intriguing historical accuracy life in industrial New England during the mid-19the century. "A superb story of grit, determination and personal growth."---The Horn Book." (from backcase)
