Be prepared.......2007-06-25
This is an advanced Latin text and not for beginners. It moves faster than a college text. If you want to review the Latin that you learned years ago in school, this may be just what you are looking for.
Much material is presented at one time: vocabulary and grammar. You should be prepared to study on your own, as there are no practice exercises to help the student learn each point presented.
There are however, sentences to translate that include new and previous grammar and vocabulary. These sentences are quite unusual, interesting, and difficult, and rewarding when correctly translated. Give yourself a gold star....
The translated sentences are in a special section in the back, along with verb conjugations and a vocabulary list.
Let me be sure to say that I do like this text. I enjoy the challenge! If you like languages, grammar, and puzzles, go for it.

Was Ok........2003-08-24
I was rather disapoointed with the way this book tried to to teach the language. If you are thinking about this book, I would recommend using Wheelock's Latin 6th edition.
Excellent Book for those keen to learn the language.......2003-06-23
I've embarked on a quest to conquer this book a number of times. Each time I make progress, but it seems each chapter after the 18th gets more difficult at an almost exponential rate, I like the way Betts has gone to the lengths he has to make the book comprehensive. I will try the book again, but unfortunately the binding has given way, I may need to buy another one. Perhaps in future editions they may like to look at making sure that the binding doesn't give way too soon. That is about the only negative thing I can say about this book. I wish you luck in your quest to learn this beautiful language.
If you make it through, you'll know Latin!.......2001-01-14
"Dense" is the word that comes to mind when I think of this book. The typeset is not the easiest to read, especially the bold print. And the grammar is introduced at a demanding pace. (Which is OK; nobody said that learning had to be easy. You're definitely allowed to take your time, and absorb the material.)
The presentation of grammar follows a fairly traditional path. Each lesson introduces a large number of grammatical points, but there are plenty of examples given. Early lessons have vocabulary lists; the vocabulary for readings in later lessions must be looked up in the glossary in the back. Most critically, the answers to the exercises and translations of the readings are given in the back of the book.
Unless you have a high level of linguistic sophistication, my recommendation would be to start your study of Latin with something a little gentler (like Wheelock). But this is a great resource, and should not be missed. My suggestion would be to work through Wheelock's "Latin" (or at least halfway through), and then tackle this book. It will be a good review of the grammar you know already, you'll learn a LOT more about Latin grammar and syntax, and you'll get a great deal of practice reading some pretty tough Latin (with the translations available to check your understanding).
In summary, you might not want to START with this book, but you will definitely benefit from working through it somewhere along your path.
Addendum to previous review.......2000-08-14
When I E-mailed to the publisher to comment on the binding and boldface print quality, they promptly sent me another copy at no charge. In fact, the print IS a bit more readable than in my first copy. I have high hopes for the binding, and it is a pleasure finding a business that goes the extra mile.
Excellent for review or further self study........2000-08-01
This text was recommended to me for further independent study after two years of high school Latin (using the Ecce Romani series). For that purpose, it is excellent, but it would probably be rather hard going for one truly starting from the beginning. The boldface type (of which there is a great deal) is rather blurred and difficult to read--on occasion one has to guess at a letter; and the binding on my copy began to fall apart by the time I was only a quarter of the way through the book. The reading selections are outstanding. I consider the purchase price money well spent.

Customer Reviews:
All-in-all, quite helpful.......2002-06-10
A great idea, especially for Americans who are much more likely to go to hispanoamerica than Spain. Lots of info, but not really specific enough. One day maybe there will be a version for each country (Mexico, Agnetina, etc.) It is too easy to confuse local idioms and receive confused looks when you try to use this book as gospel. Still, it is helpful, and well-formatted.
conversations -- at last!.......2000-04-04
When I took French in college, the emphasis was on everyday conversations, not rote memorization of vocabulary and verb endings. For a long time I've looked for a Spanish book that used the conversation method, and, for me, this book is it. I find it far easier to remember Spanish words and phrases in the context of casual conversation, as in this book, rather than from a lengthy vocabulary list. I do think the audio tape will help with pronunciation -- otherwise, I recommend this book heartily.
Only for the highly motivated.......1999-01-09
I bought this book (and several others) as part of a plan to learn some Spanish prior to a trip to Ecuador.
I will readily admit that I did not make it very far into this book. While I liked the fact that it teaches Spanish for the Western Hemisphere, I had real trouble trying to learn to speak by reading. I did not buy the cassettes that are available for use with this book. I think I would have been more successful if I had.
The book also moves very quickly. So if you don't want to go through 3 chapters of "hi, how are you" conversation at the beginning, you might like this book.
I eventually purchased a learn-from-tape program (Pimsleur, no book needed) that worked for my personal style.

Quite good but not enough.......2004-08-04
This is quite a good course in itself. I like the method, the practical teaching, the exercises, etc, etc. But I have a problem with the fact that differences in the language of a number of countries are simply ironed out under the umbrella name of "Latin American Spanish". The language of, say, Costa Rica and that of Mexico have deep differences. If you are serious about addressing the needs of learners with different destinations, then you have to do more than just offering an alternative to Castilian Spanish. You have to give us, the learners, a course that provides the local language we need, so we can communicate. If it weren't for my native speaker teacher, my Mexican Spanish might not have been Mexican enough. My name is really joan, not joana, but I can't put this right.

Nearly there.......2004-06-21
This is a good course. I am using it and I am happy with the lessons. It is good that we now have proper courses for latin america rather than having to use peninsular spanish and then you are not understood, which has happened to me. This is a step forward, but in my view is not enough. Within latin america there are many differences. There are important pronunciation differences, in the vowels, in final s, in h for x, and many others. There are also important structural differences, like the verbs that go with vos and the tuteo. In my view, we should have at least two separate courses, one mainly for Mexico and one mainly for Argentina. If we are serious about courses that really teach the language for the country where you go, we cannot iron out the differences.
Different regional dialects.......2001-05-24
What led me to buy this book and audio cassette set was the use of different regional dialects. Most of the audio cassettes I've purchased have native speakers from Spain. I enjoyed listening to the different conversations by the speakers from Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, and Argentina. However, I think that the book is better suited for non-beginners. (I started learning Spanish when I was 14, so this was a review for me.) The speakers speak a little too fast on the cassettes for the beginners, but overall this is a good buy.
Only for the experienced.......2001-05-06
I agree completely with the previous reviewer about for whom this book is most appropriate for, although I am not as harsh with my rating. I have used four books by Teach Yourself in my spanish studies: Spanish, Further Spanish, Business Spanish, and this book. Each book is very helpful for one with a basic background in spanish, but many words are not translated in the chapters (you have to look them up in the index) or not translated at all. Most of the dialogues on the tapes for each series were uneven at best, with one speaker talking very quickly and one more slowly. The dialogues should have started out more slowly and perhaps provided two versions of each dialogue, one slow and one faster. There certainly is room on the tapes for more dialogues; perhaps TY could offer a longe-running tape in their next versions. I found the book exercises challenging and helpful, and each chapter presents language skills that are immediately usable. I did, however, find that many of my Latino friends disagreed with some of the usage. As it is said, you learn spanish by the book, and then by speaking it with native speakers you learn "real spanish". I have been overall pleased with all the TY books (I have also used Italian, Japanese, Chinese, German, and Finnish), and for the money they are a great bargain, but I would be willing to pay a few dollars more for a more perfected version.

Super Interesting and Intense.......2002-04-27
The Indians of India are planning to revolt against the British in the mid 1800's. The son of a British captian lives in India at this time. He disguises himself as an Indian, coloring his skin, and wearing Indian style shorts. He gets caught in the middle of the rebellion and along with a Hindu monk, escapes the city in search of his father in another city. The adventurous trip to that other city through the tropical jungles of India is filled with suspense and adventure. A sort of queen of India is passing around a rubi from province to province. Each province that gets to see the rubi is assured the validity of the rebellion. John and the Hindu monk find an abandoned home of a British family, but all are dead, the Indian rebellion; only the 6 year old daugher survived. John and the Hindu monk take her with them, but she ends up with the rubi by accident. That is when another adventurous journey begins.
