Book Description
This luscious cookbook -- full of glorious recipes for making the most of extra-virgin olive oil -- is a feast for both the eyes and the palate. In 1991 Nan McEvoy planted 1,000 olive tree seedlings on her ranch in Northern California. Today, 18,000 trees later, McEvoy Ranch is highly respected for its fine extra-virgin olive oil. Also producing lavender and honey, and maintaining an extensive kitchen garden, the ranch -- entirely organic -- has evolved into a virtual paradise, replete with heirloom vegetables, fruits, and olive groves as far as the eye can see. With this wealth of ingredients, ranch chef Gerald Gass has created more than 70 recipes combining extra-virgin olive oil with the best the garden has to offer. Comforting soups of winter squash with honey and sage; hearty pasta dishes with olives and tomatoes; savory pork tenderloin flavored with red cherries and spices; crunchy lemon biscotti -- these olive oil-infused recipes are simple to prepare and draw on the fruits of nature as their main ingredients. Stunning photographs of the olive groves, gardens, and recipes make The Olive Harvest Cookbook a lovely gift for anyone who has ever dreamed of living off the land in their own little piece of Eden.

An appetizing cookbook to simply page through.......2005-02-13
Written by the executive chef of McEvoy Ranch, a place renowned for its organic extra virgin olive oil, The Olive Harvest is a sumptuous cookbook of recipes that showcase the flavors and delights that can be created with olive oil, or that use olive oil as a garnish. Full color photographs by Maren Caruso and explicit step-by-step instructions walk the amateur to professional chef through the steps of creating such delicacies as Lemon-Tarragon Gazpacho; Warm White Bean Salad; Salt Cod with Potatoes, Leeks, and Saffron; Walnut-Olive Oil Cake, and much more. An appetizing cookbook to simply page through, offering succulent and memorable dishes.
Just average. Unispired and unoriginal........2004-12-31
As an avid chef and artisan who creates my own decorative olive oil bottles, I am immersed in the olive and olive oil culture and I have to say I expected more from this book considering the McEvoy ranch's reputation. I thought the recipes were uninspired and unoriginal and nothing I hadn't seen somewhere before. Who needs a recipe for mashed potatoes or lemon roasted chicken? If you are looking for more unique fare, I would suggest you check out Mustards Grill by Cindy Pawlcyn. In there you will find recipes for butternut squash and goat cheese risotto and salmon roulade with kalamata olive, orange and celery relish.

Book Description
: With menus and recipes for each of the ten sabbats, this is a major resource for anyone planning a dish for the countless potlucks we hold at every season. I began reading it with some fear and trepidation. When the authors began speaking of Medieval customs, I was terribly afraid that the recipes would concentrate on things like boar's heads and roast oxen, or whatever the Witches of Old might have at their seasonal gatherings. On the contrary, the recipes that Wood and Seefeldt include in this attractive collection tend to be simple and very good, at least to judge from those that I've sampled. And no, the ingredients are not at all exotic. I tried making latkes, which were quick and easy to mix in my medieval Cuisinart. With a bit of apple in the mix, they were very good. I also had no problems with soups, which were simple and delicious.
But the recipes are only the beginning. A fascinating introduction gives a positive, brief picture of Neo-Pagan Witchcraft, as background for anyone new to the Craft. Then, for each of the sabbats and for each recipe, there is an introduction, suggesting, among other things, rituals for blessing the meal and for invoking the appropriate Deities. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the whole book, from cover to cover, which is something I've never done with any of the hundred-or-so other cookbooks sitting on my sagging shelves. This is likely to become my favorite cookbook, and I suspect it could be yours, too.
Not just a cookbook, this unusual publication outlines the spiritual relevance of the eight major pagan holidays and offers appropriate rituals, menus, and recipes for each occasion. The recipes are easy to follow and make use of ingredients at their seasonal peak. From dandelion wine to medieval honey cakes, the dishes preserve a culinary tradition closely connected to natural rhythms and enduring symbolism. The authors also include an appendix on growing an herb garden and a resource list of herb seed companies and nurseries.

Wonderful Cookbook.......2006-08-05
This is my favorite Wiccan cookbook. Some people may complain about the veal, but I don't hear anyone complaining about the Medieval Game Bird. (which, by the way, double the beer, add parsnips, carrots, potatoes and a bunch of herbs...side of soda bread....awesome.! ) In my household, the hunters are the patron god(esses), the recipes in this book are hearty, easy and easily modified to suit game meat. I refer to this book for harvest festival recipes and side dishes to accompany the game we procure.
Yes, there are pagans who hunt.....
Yum!.......2006-06-19
A wonderful book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Most of the recipies have been a success (one or two didn't turn out so wonderfully, but that may have been my mistake!), and it has been a huge help in organising our celebrations.
As for the recipe calling for veal, if you object to it's use, boycott the veal industry! Apparently though, some of the other readers do not understand that just because a recipe says "veal" that another meat cannot be used. I live on a cattle station, where we slaughter our own, and I can tell you that a good piece of aged rump usually tastes better in ANY veal recipe!! Obviously your industry standards are lower than ours, because I know that our calves are spoilt rotten (not overfed, just well looked after!) before going off to a (relativly) humaine butcher.
You don't have to be into Wicca to enjoy this.......2003-12-15
You don't have to be into Wicca to enjoy this book. I enjoy cookbooks and it is hard to find many that have good recipes that are easy to fix. I don't follow Wicca or practice it, but I loved this cookbook.
The recipes are comfort food style recipes that are generally easy to make. They have covered everything in this book from Bread to Dessert. I love the bread recipes and the basic stuffing recipe is easy and delicious.
Just don't avoid this book because it is Wiccan, if you do you are missing a gem of a cookbook. The history and lore and interesting reading, but it's the recipes that are wonderful and savory.
What I like most is that this book has recipes that are good quality without being pages and pages of ingredients and recipes. Many of them are basics that you can use in a variety of different ways. This is my favorite cookbook. My only complaint is that it isn't longer, but that's not really a complaint at all:)
ditto on banishing the veal.......2002-07-24
I just got the book and probably wouldn't have been so eager to buy it had I known there was a veal recipe included. The book has lots of charm but the veal recipe disturbs me. Wiccans follow the tenet of "harm none", which means animals too. I will enjoy tryng many recipes in this book but can't understand why two Wiccan authors would include the veal recipe -is it possible they don't know the horrible abuse the calves endure? I have always said that as Wiccans grow in number in this country, surely we can get something done about animal abuse. (Christians should be working on it too.) I do like the lovely cover and design of the book. I also like the spells and ideas on observance of the holidays. Lots of these ideas will work for anyone - Wiccan or not.
Try Banishing Veal Stew Instead of Vanishing Veal Stew.......2002-03-02
I really like this beautiful book very much. It has so many great recipes, very interesting lore and inspirational ritual ideas. It looks beautiful. It is printed on quality paper. It has been well researched and it is a big help in planning Sabbat feasts. I am troubled by the inclusion of the recipe for Vanishing Veal Stew, however. I live just a short distance away from a major veal supplier and slaughterhouse that actually invented a most cruel and hideous method of raising veal calves that has become the industry standard. I'm not a vegetarian though I should be. The hellish life that veal calves live is just about the worst imaginable and is arguably the worst of any "food" animal. I take the Wiccan Rede seriously as I'm sure the authors do, and I strive to come closer to it every day with mixed success. In light of how miserably these baby animals live their short lives I don't think a recipe using their flesh should be included in any book that has "Wicca" in the title.

Mustard! Mustard! Mustard! Just the name makes my philanges tingle!! This book changed everything for me!! Before reading my digestion was something terrible. I couldn't digest anything! Now after reading this book, mustard has become a way of life for me. I wake up in the morning and eat frosted mini-wheats soaked in mustard. For brunch, it's mustard on a bagel. Lunch is mustard on my finger which i just dip into the mustard jar. And for dinner, I have a nice, tasty, filling slim-fast very berry chocolate drink with a shot of mustard for taste. This book is titled "The Incredible Secrets of Mustard". What I want to know is what is mustard up to? What kinds of secrets has it been keeping? And what is so incredible about these secrets? I think the incredible secret of mustard is that it really is ketchup disguised as a yellow condiment.
That Barry Levenson directs a mean movie (see "Diner") but if you really want to see some high art, check out his mustard book!

fascinating resource for vinegar lovers.......2003-03-19
I really like vinegar and wanted to find a book that would tell me a bit about its history as well as how to cook with it, and I've been very pleased with this work. The author starts by defining vinegar and then discusses its discovery and uses in various parts of the world. After a chapter on the various types of vinegars, there is a chapter on vinegar and health, including old wives' tales as well as scientific research. Practical uses for vinegar are given, and many recipes. The book concludes with information on resources -- vinegar museums, websites, and retail suppliers for vinegar or vinegar-making needs; references; and an index.
I thought this was quite well done. I've learned a lot and have been happy with the recipes I've tried so far. Very nice.

missed the mark.......1999-08-29
I am constantly looking for books containing herbal lore. When I picked this book up I was dissapointed to discover that while a good number of herbs are covered, there just wasn't much good information about them. For example, on Poppy, the author whetts my appetite with, "Much lore surrounds the opium poppy.." but then only goes on to give one small example. There are plenty of diverse recipes, but they are scattered throughout, making it difficult to use. The illustrations are nothing to hold the interest but give a basic view for plant identification. Perhaps if this had been one of the first herbals I picked up I would have been more satisfied, but in todays market where there are hundreds of herbals to spend one's money on Spices and Herbs just needed to go further to stand out.

Book Description
The Art of Sculling provides novice and experienced scullers with a comprehensive, illustrated guide to the equipment, techniques, and physiology of the sport. Beginners will find step-by-step instructions and photographs for launching and rigging a boat and developing the proper sculling stroke. Experienced rowers will find guidelines for developing training programs. Other chapters cover advanced technique, racing, sculling in team boats, safety, and sculling for the more mature.
Customer Reviews:
You will refer to this over and over, and it WILL improve your sculling technique........2007-08-21
When I first took sculling lessons a year ago, this book and Essential Sculling were recommended by the instructor. I ordered both, and though I read both, I didn't really appreciate the wisdom contained in The Art of Sculling until I fell out of the shell a couple of weeks ago.
I had done a capsize recovery drill in the beginner shell, but not in the sleeker boat to which I'd graduated. Fifteen minutes of flinging myself at the edge of the shell sent me back to the book, and a 2 week hiatus while my sore side recovered gave me much-needed time to reflect. I realized that, like trying harder and harder to recover but with improper technique, I was trying to improve my sculling by working harder, not smarter. I realized that if I really wanted to improve, I would need to learn everything I could about exactly how to scull properly.
I had a new appreciation for so many of the points in this book, like "Good sculling is made up of two very basic ideas; using your energy efficiently and allowing the boat to work for you." Nowhere does he say to just strap yourself in and pull like mad. And he's right! The scullers who invoke envy are pulling smoothly and gracefully and efficiently.
The real value of this book is its' exactness. Everything he says is correct and detailed, and though the importance of a seemingly basic sentence like the one above may not sink it at first, with repeated attempts at learning to scull one does eventually relate, and 'get it'.
The Art of Sculling covers buying and rigging a boat, but the real gold is in the Advanced Technique chapter. Paduda tells you not only what you should be doing, but the how and the why, and exactly how you should feel when you are doing it. He explains how memory works, and modeling and visualization in exacting detail. These are not things that most of us can absorb with one reading. I am finding it helpful to row, then read, then row, then read, and I suspect I will for a long time.
If you are serious about sculling properly, this book is a huge help. - I would say indispensable. I also found that learning to erg properly let me get muscle memory for body movement that transferred to the boat, allowing me to concentrate on bladework, boat movement, etc. when I am in the boat. In that regard a Concept 2 erg, and their DVD on the subject, were extremely helpful. I also used the erg to build up the strength and stamina to row on the water with proper technique, to the extent that I am able, for an hour or so.
Good luck, happy rowing, and may you always have flat water.
I loved it..........2002-11-13
This is probably the best book I have read to date on sculling. It is geared toward the novice and treats you as an intelligent reader.
I have been sculling for the last 6 months, so I am a newbie to the sport. The information contained in this book is wonderfully presented and arranged. It is easy and enjoyable to read.
For those of you interested in training this book lays down a good base with which to further your skills and performance.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in rowing.
Excellent read.......1999-09-19
VERY readable, very informative, very helpful and very inspiring. I enjoyed it immensely and found the various training drills and chapters on diet and physiology both useful and fascinating. If you wonder why you bother with sculling and are fed up with not getting any better, read this.

9th Edition Tarnished By Factual Errors.......2006-02-13
Earlier editions of this book had a well deserved reputation for excellence. Kershner is a master of taking the highly technical subject of flying and distilling it into an efficient, enjoyable learning experience.
Imagine my surprise to find the ninth edition rife with errors! Examples:
- erroneous definition of Class A airspace;
- erroneous decoding of wind speed and direction in a sample TAF weather report;
- erroneous Sigmet description;
- Weather Depiction Chart doesn't match explanations in the text.
These are some of the errors that I found and I'm not yet a pilot. The skills required for actually flying an airplane haven't changed much since I purchased my much-thumbed 5th edition 20 yrs ago but airspace regulations and weather reporting have changed considerably- probably not a coincidence that the errors I found are in the newer material. A quick calculation of Kershner's age at the time of the 9th edition publication makes me wonder if he was even involved in creating the updated sections.
All the content of this book is available for free via a few different downloads off the FAA website. Thus the major reason for buying this book is to cut to the chase on the body of knowledge required to earn a private pilot license because the FAA downloads though well written, cover everything from powered parachutes to jumbo jets. At least the first two of the above errors would cause wrong responses on the private pilot written test causing me to question the value of the $40 I spent on this book though I did just notice that Amazon recently cut the price by a third.
Better for After Knowledge Test Referance.......2002-03-24
I purchased his book (an earlier version) on recommendation of my flight instructor when first starting out. If your looking strictly for study material to score high on the written test there is more information than you need. If your looking for a good referance book after the written test then purchase Rod Machado's pilot manual. I use Rod's book now after earning my private license. Whenever I pick it up it either refreshes my knowledge or I am able to learn something new with further depth. Rod's book is well complimented with illustrations and diagrams to help understand the subject matter. If you want a book to use strictly for the knowlege test they are both overkill.
Great book.......2001-08-17
Informative, articulate, and carefully edited -- a must have reference for aspiring pilots. Especially impressive is Kershner's ability to avoid the most common pitfalls of writing technical material: the text is tight, complete, succinct, and perhaps most surprisingly, a real treat to read.
Great Tool.......2000-10-19
This was a great tool for my flight instruction. Kershner has a way of explaining things that is better than the other books I was able to find. I read this on my own instead of ground school and past my written and practical - so, it worked!
excellent easy to follow guide........1999-09-27
I actually read, and used extensively, the 7th edition of this book. Mr. Kershner has a easy to read and follow style that has helped me tremendously on my way to getting certified as a private pilot. Whenever I was having diffuculty learning a particular aspect of flying I referred first to this book and got the straight and skinny on the subject. Mr. Kershner obviously has a grasp on what a student pilot goes through to understand the technical jargon and concepts of flight principals, navigation, cross country flying, flight instuments, and landing an airplane.
The illstrations are clear and concise. The photographs are very good.
I highly recommend this book to any student pilot as a supplement to ground school, or anyone interested in what it takes to learn to fly, or anyone who flys in a light plane as a passenger and wants to learn more about what's going on in the cockpit and the pilot's mind.

Customer Reviews:
A Roller Coaster of a Romance.......2007-07-23
The novel covers about two weeks from Dan and Trent's first encounter (but not really, read the book!), through misunderstandings, mistaken identities, misconceptions and the happily ever after ending. Their story was a fast-paced, roller coaster of a ride that I had a hard time putting down.
Despite how quickly their story moves, their characters come to life with glimpses into their troubled younger years, their hopes and dreams. Family and friends delightfully add to their story;like the vibrant Ida and the outrageous Nathan.
This is a book that I will read again and again.
Good story but not well-written........2007-05-01
A bit cheesy in places. Many typos throughout. The book was not well-edited. The price is steep for such a mediocre publication.
Spare Parts, but Not Spare Feelings!.......2007-02-10
Thia ia my first experience in reading a Romantics novel and while I found the plot to be predictable, I enjoyed the story and the characterizations very much. It had all the elements of a well-told story and made me want to go back and read more of this series. As a result, I have ordered four more titles to see if the quality of these stories holds up. I would recommend anyone who like reading a good romance story to sit down and read this story but would warn you. You won't want to stop until you've finished the whole story!
Kris Kleeberg
Excellent Book.......2007-01-04
I loved Spare Parts. The characters had substance and charm and you wanted to save them both from themselves. The book moved well and the descriptions were excellent. I couldn't put the book down.
I would definitely recommend this book. It is well worth it.
Love is Joy.......2006-06-22
Dan and Trent fell in love with each other in a whirlwind, despite big secrets each was keeping inside. They were opposites in so many ways, but they each clearly found the other overwhelmingly attractive and they each found overwhelming joy in each other. When the secrets each was hiding came out, their love was badly shaken but withstood even that challenge. Add several interesting supporting characters, some hot (and incredibly sweet) sex scenes (that a big hunk of masculine man like Dan could so willingly surrender himself to Trent in their sex was amazing), and you get a fun read. It also has a wonderfully optimistic and upbeat message. I've read this book three or four times now (I've lost count), and I've enjoyed it even more each time I've read it. If you liked any of the other "Romentics" novels from Scott and Scott, you'll like this one as well.

Classical work in sorcery.......2005-04-25
This is a book of techniques of sorcery that Spare created largely through automatic drawing. Many of the core ideas, such as sigilization, the creation of a personal alphabet of sacred latters (more commonly known as an alphabet of desire), and of the acheivement of a state of gnostic vacuity (the neither-neither) were later interpretted by authors such as Peter Carroll, Stephen Mace, and Ramsey Dukes into what has become known as Chaos Magic. This is a foundational work in modern occult literature, and deserves a place in the collection of any serious student or practitioner of sorcery.
Features numerous illustrations by Spare, as well as in introduction by the publisher, Spare archivist Kenneth Grant.
