Book Description

Let us first examine the antiquated theory, as it must now be called. By bringing a raptorial insect and a firefly together, we find that the flashing light of the latter does actually scare away the former, and is therefore, for the moment, a protection as effectual as the camp-fire the traveller lights in a district abounding with beasts of prey. Notwithstanding this fact, and assuming that we have here the whole reason of the existence of the light-emitting power, a study of the firefly's habits compels us to believe that the insect would be just as well off without the power as with it.

In The Naturalist in La Plata, Hudson does a good job of blending scientific content with interesting stories, anecdotes, and other tidbits from his observations of the area. Hudson grew up in the Pampas, and the book illustrates his special affinity for the region. Additionally, he has a love for nature and a respect for its wonders. An early environmentalist, Hudson often laments man's destruction of nature in this volume, presenting wonderful arguments as to the value of convservation. I probably wouldn't recommend this as an easy leisure read, but it is a good example of naturalist writing. Hudson's stories and obvious admiration of nature keep the book from being too dry.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Guide and Historical Source Book.......2003-03-12

Steve Porcella and Cameron Burns spent at least two summers collecting information from historical figures while putting up new
routes to all fifteen of the >14K foot peaks in California. This book is chockfull of history gathered directly from some of the early
climbers of these Sierra peaks. Many of the approaches to these peaks are arrived at by hiking (which is half the fun when in the
Sierras). As both authors are world class climbers and besides supplying detailed maps and routes traced onto photos of the peaks,
they have included many B&W photos of such points of interest as approach scenery, actual routes, historical contributors, as well
as many photos of themselves climbing the routes. Thoroughly enjoyable, this book is as interesting for the armchair climber as
for individuals wishing to expand their climbing horizons by exploring these magnificent mountains in California.

          5 out of 5 stars A Must-Buy.......2003-03-12

Porcella and Burns do an amazing job on describing CA Fourteeners. I don't think I've ever seen a climbing guide of this caliber within the last 10 years. Very insightful historical information and great descriptions. A Must-Buy!

1 out of 5 stars Lacks details on routes, great historical sections.......2001-08-07

Porcella and Burn's book is really the only book about climbing California 14'ers. It's a great starting point for climbing in the state with extensive historical sections and nearly every available route up each of the 14'ers in the state. In other words, it will get you pointed in the right direction and to the trailhead to do the climb.

Unfortunately, the book is sorely lacking in route description details. The authors say to use both the pictures and descriptions of the routes to make your way up the mountain, but there are cases of descriptions without pictures. The book is most dangerous for beginning to intermediate climbers for its lack of approximate times to each location degree of difficulty, and lack of attention to detail on the "lesser" routes.

Take Mt. Tyndall's Northwest Ridge. It takes a strong hiker about 8 hours just to reach the base. The description describes the route as "easy" and up a twisting rocky trail. In fact, the trail doesn't exist and most of the climb up this ridge requires negotiating large, unstable boulders. The authors do admit the summit ridge is exposed, but do not mention there are some class 3 moves at this point. Without approximate times to the summit there is no way of knowing how long or how difficult the climb is. Furthermore, there is only a description of the climb and not a clear picture of the route. I actually told friends that climbing Mt. Illimani (6400 meters), which required some technical ice climbing, and 4 days of climbing was easier than climbing Mt. Tyndall (approximately 18 hours).

Lack of details are also evident in their poor description of the West Face route of Mt. Williamson. There is no mention of good spots to camp after reaching Shepherds pass. Williamson bowl requires fairly strenuous hiking since it is largely boulder field between several moraines. Porcella and co., describe crossing this as "entering the Williamson bowl from the north," which, judging from the topo quad and this description, makes it sound like an easy walk. The description fails to describe the route correctly, with the description sounding like you continue up the mountain when the picture shows a turn to the south. Finally the authors chose to take a picture of the climb from an angle that most climbers would not see from the southern approach.

Porcella and Burn's rating system often seems haphazard. One climb on Mt. Shasta was rated as Class 3-4, but I found this climb to be far easier than the Class 2 climbing on Mt. Tyndall.

There is a lot to cover here, but the easier routes certainly could use more description and approximate times. Yes mountaineering is dangerous, difficult, and strenuous, but lack of detail is not an excuse for the "c'est la vie" attitude Porcella and Burns use for their descriptions. In fact more description would help climbers be more prepared for the routes they choose.

          2 out of 5 stars Needs work!!.......2001-07-11

After moving to CA from CO, and having used Colorado 14er guidebooks by Dawson and Roach, I was disappointed by this book. While there are many fine photographs, wonderful climbing history of the peaks, a slew of routes, and many routes superimposed on photographs, there were many elements that I find essential, that were missing. Topographic maps of the areas in question (with routes drawn on them), round trip distance information, elevation gain, and an estimated (conservative) completion time are essential pieces of information when planning a trip, and are not included here. While the difficulties of the various routes are described well, these other descriptors would make the book twice as good as it is now. Dawson's format, at the beginning of each route description, listing the aforementioned deficiencies (with the exception of the maps) is excellent. From the guidebooks I've looked at though, this is the best available.

          5 out of 5 stars Fourteener Book.......2001-01-30

Simply an incredible book. I will never look at California's fourteeners the same way again. The daring ascents, so beautifully mapped and photographed, make for a rock-climber's delight. The lush mountain photography is only one bettered by the incisive and informative route descriptions. Having lived in California for many years, I thought that I knew these peaks well. Not so in the wake of this small gem. I recommend this book for novice and expert alike.

I've never read a more informative book. It not only points out what you should do to promote, it actually gives you the tools to do it. Both phone numbers and websites that will really help you. It is the first self help book that doesn't tell you what it is going to tell you, IT JUST TELLS YOU. How novel. It will take me weeks to implement all the information, but each step is clearly presented. If you write to sell you need this book as flowers need rain.

5 out of 5 stars It's Never Too Early to Start Marketing.......2007-03-17

Do you know when you should start marketing your book? Marilyn Ross does, and in "Jump Start Your Book Sales" she reveals the answer. (Hint: It's before you start writing it!)

Before, during, and after -- in fact. Regardless of where you are in the writing and publishing process, book marketing should be at the forefront of your thinking. Is your book even marketable? What is the market? What length of book are those people used to buying? Why would they buy yours instead of (or in addition to) all the other similar books on the market? What will differentiate yours? These are the kind of questions you should be asking yourself even before you put pen to paper, or fingers to keys, as the case may be.

These strategic concepts are the bread and butter of the pages comprising "Jump Start." Don't be surprised if you find meat in the middle that you can really sink your teeth into. This isn't another rehash of duplicative information available for free from countless websites. This is the real deal, written by the co-founder of the Small Publishers Association of North America. Highly recommended reading before you start writing, before you start publishing, and after you think you've marketed it all. - Brent Sampson, author of Self-Publishing Simplified

5 out of 5 stars Well Researched - Provided Excellent Assistance to Me.......2007-02-14

through the self publishing process of my new book. More than a notion, self publishing is very rewarding but extremely time consuming, and SUPER hard work. I thought writing the book was hard. Ha! That was the easy part!!! Thank goodness I bought this book, as its given me many great ideas for marketing and promotion. It's wonderful to have written the best book in the world, but it doesn't mean anything if no one knows about it! Thanks Marilyn!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for self-published authors and small publishers.......2006-06-12

The position of a first-time self-published author is not an enviable one; you've already written your manuscript, invested money in typesetting, cover design and an initial print run, you've purchased an ISBN number and your book is in Ingram's database, so it can be ordered in stores. You wait a week, and then another, for book sales to start coming in. Finally, realization begins to set in - just because it is possible for someone to walk into a book store and order your book, it isn't very likely that it will happen, because nobody knows about it.

Marilyn and Tom Ross have written an excellent resource for self-published authors and small publishers who want to get their book sales going, and their techniques are considerate of the budgets that most self-published authors are constrained by.

If you successfully self-publish your book, there are three steps for you to follow:

          1. Write a solid, clear and engaging book that people will enjoy reading. Refer to books about clear and effective writing.

          2. Work your way through the publishing process. Refer to Dan Poynter's "Self-Publishing Manual".

          3. Get the word out about your recently published work - this is exactly what the Marilyn and Tom Ross show you how to do in "Jump-Start Your Book Sales".

In short, if you are a self-published author, are considering self-publishing, are a small publisher, or even if you're a traditionally published author who wants to take a more active role in the promotion of your book (which most publishers will expect you to do anyway), you should read this book.

Do you like realistic fiction books? Do you like happy endings? If you answered yes to these questions, then you need to read Just As Long As We're Together.
Just As Long As We're Together is about three friends. Rachel and Stephanie were friends since second grade and now they are off to seventh grade. Alison, a new girl in the neighborhood, joins Rachel and Stephanie and they become the threesome. The three of them do everything together, until the big fight between Rachel and Stephanie. Judy Blume is telling us that friendship should never end.Even if you never see your friend again, you should never lose relationship.
I like how Judy Blume expresses the feelings of the three friends. She uses great detail in this book. I have read a lot of her books, but this one is one of Judy Blume's best novels.

3 out of 5 stars Middle School Friendships.......2007-02-23

Stephanie, the narrator of this story, is a seventh-grader. She's had a best friend, Rachel, for a very long time, and they plan on remaining best friends this year, especially since Stephanie has just recently moved into Rachel's neighborhood. Also in their neighborhood is a new girl, Alison, whom Stephanie meets just before school starts. Alison is in Stephanie's homeroom and a couple of her classes, and the two of them become friends. Soon Stephanie is spending more time with Alison and less time with Rachel.

Then Stephanie finds out that her parents are separating and might even be getting a divorce. She is very upset and denying that there is a serious problem between them, while at the same time fighting with both her mother and her father because they aren't working out their issues.

Stephanie keeps these problems a secret from Rachel and Alison. At least, she thinks it is a secret, until Rachel confronts her and accuses her of not being a good friend. This story is about the very real trials and tribulations of friendship, and the feelings these girls have about friendship and school and boys are ones that most girls will recognize. The characters were mostly realistic, although Stephanie wasn't catching the signals that should have told her about her parents' problems or the problems with her friends.

              5 out of 5 stars Awsomeness.......2006-10-06

5 out of 5 stars Just as Long as We're Together.......2006-09-20

This book is mainly about three girls who are best friends. They all live in the same block, and their houses are really close to each other. They have so much fun together and always have cool adventures. They live new experiences, and a little by little they discover the way of life. They practically act like sisters. Everything goes perfect, but then Stephanie hides a secret from them. All of a sudden their friendship starts falling apart, because all of them start hiding secrets from each other! Then Rachel starts changing a lot with Stephanie because she thinks she doesn't like her anymore. Then Stephanie gets the idea that it's Rachel who doesn't like her. Stephanie keeps her secret safe until she can't take it anymore.
I liked this book because it describes how a friendship can go wrong if you hide a secret from your friends. You should know that your friends will always be there for you. This book made me feel kind of sad in the middle because of all the things that happened to their friendship. When it was getting close to the end, it was very enthusiastic! I guess that explains why I finished reading it in only two days. It's a really good book, and some of the things can happen in real life. I recommend everybody to read this book, especially if you're a girl
