Book Description
Within the past decade, lacrosse has seen explosive growth on the elementary, junior and high school, and college levels, rapidly becoming one of America's most popular playing sports. Lifelong lacrosse player and coach Daniel Morris, along with noted author Michael Morris, distill the essence of this exciting, fast-paced game into one compact volume, teaching everything the beginning and intermediate coach needs to know about the rules, equipment, skills, and drills of this venerable game.
Unlike other books on lacrosse, this guide reflects recent important rule changes, as well as the latest techniques in offense and defense, stick-handling, and advances in equipment that have transformed the game as it is played today. Chapters focus on critical elements of individual and team play, conducting practices, skill-building drills, and a playbook of offensive and defensive strategies. A resource list of suppliers, camps, and additional information is included.
This is a book that will find a place on every coach and player's shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Best coaching book I have seen.......2007-05-07
I am coaching youth, middle school, and travel lax teams and have very little on-field lacrosse experience. Of the tools I have found, this book is the most straightforward. When I see the most experienced coaches work, they are using the drills in this book. There is still a lack of good books on intermediate lacrosse offensive and defensive strategies, but this handles all the basics.
Great book for beginning coaches.......2006-10-02
I am very pleased with this book. Great outline of all aspects of the sport. A must have for beginning coaches and/or parents with kids starting to play lacrosse.
Lacrosse Newbie.......2006-06-26
Since it is nearly impossible to find anything in "Lacrosse for Adults" for those who are new to the sport and would love to learn to play, I got this book in the hopes of learning the basics. I haven't had a chance to put the new knowledge to the test in either play or instruction, but it was a very valuable tool for the novice player or coach. GO MAMMOTH! GO OUTLAWS!
Exceptionally Helpful.......2006-03-25
I am the parent of two young boys who are showing an interest in lacrosse and recently signed up for a local youth team. I grew up playing baseball and soccer and did not have any idea how the game of lacrosse is played. This book has given me the knowledge of basic skills that I need to play with my sons now and I can see that its more advanced chapters will be useful for years to come. Although its title suggests that it is geared for coaching, I highly recommend it to any parent who is interested in learning about lacrosse and supporting their children as they become involved with this growing sport.
...at last!.......2006-03-20
Yes, at last a book that covers everything from novice to coaching for Lacrosse. Well written and informative, which makes it interesting and a easy read. I bought this book for my nephew who's a high school Lacrosse coach. He was thrilled, he told me there is almost nothing written about this sport, especially in such an easy to read and informative style. As he said. "If you're interested in Lacrosse, this is the book."
Customer Reviews:
Arguably the best strategy book written for either field or box lacrosse.......2006-09-22
The reviewer below is apparently befuddled because Hinkson's classic book doesn't seem to be about Field Lacrosse. He is correct in that. This book is about Box Lacrosse, the indoor game that is Canada's National summer sport. Box Lacrosse and its variant, Indoor Lacrosse, are becoming increasingly popular in the United States and this book is THE BIBLE of Box Lacrosse. Moreover, many of Hinkson's principles of the game and descriptions of the coordination required among players are central to both forms of the game. This is, however, a thinking person's book. It not only describes what offensive and defensive strategies exist, but also why they work and when to use them, given the team composition available to a coach. If you want to KNOW lacrosse, rather than know about lacrosse, this is the book for you. Folks with a more casual interest in the game will likely find this volume WAY too detailed.
In my opinion, this is a five star book for field lacrosse coaches and serious fans. There are not enough stars available to give Hinkson his due if one is a fan of Box Lacrosse.
"Hockey Team strategies".......2004-01-16
Although this book supplied a lot of information, it did not give the information i was looking for. For example...zone defenses are played with six players, and the game of lacrosse involves an "X" man...This book is more about hockey and basketball, and the diagrams used are that of a hockey rink! The proper terminology, atleast in Jersey and New York, is "Man-up" and not "Power-play!" The drills listed are very good, but I would not recommend this to a youth league coach who is starting a new program with little experience of the game.
A must for coaches and players of box AND field lacrosse!.......1999-08-18
I can not begin to tell the sleepless nights I spent revamping and retooling our FIELD lacrosse team's offense with ideas from Hinkson's book. ALthough it is based on the box game, most of the principles apply directly (or can be modified) to the field game. Along with his fundmentals book, I highly recommend this book to any aspiring fan, coach, or player of the fastest game on 2 feet.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-10-07
This is very funny and intersting book. It's great to know the top 100 things that everyone shold know how to do. I have recommend it to all my friends and they also have enjoyed it! Recommended!
Not much to this ........2007-04-11
The book is okay but there are other things to spend money on.
Mixed Bag.......2007-01-27
A friend got this for me on my 30th birthday, and I thought it was the perfect gift...until I read it.
I was reminded of an infamous assignment one teacher gave my class in Junior High: We were asked to explain, in writing, how to tie our shoes--the goal being, of course, to make us aware just how difficult it can be to effectively articulate ANYTHING.
Needless to say, most of us failed...but I'm feeling a little better about myself now that I've read this book. Most of these 'experts' simply CANNOT explain/impart much of what they know in writing--making their entries frustrating, especially for people like me, who were actually hoping to pick up a tip or two from reading the book!
What's interesting to note, though, is that the 'problem' entries are usually not the oddly nebulous ones, like Stephen Covey's terrific MANAGE YOUR TIME. It's the 'simple' ones like MAKE A BED that, mysteriously, elude their authors.
A mixed bag.
Useful I'd say.......2007-01-12
I had this on talking book and found it very interesting and downright useful so I bought it in book form for my daughter and her fiance. I am not out there in the world meeting and greeting but they are so I thought they would get a lot of mileage from it. They seem to enjoy it.
It's not supposed to be serious!.......2006-01-21
Presumably, everyone already knows how to breathe and make a bed. Clearly, there's another point to this book other than to teach you how-to. Reading this little gem is something like watching an episode of Monk: you share in the madness of people who pay attention to aspects of the mundane and turn the quotidian into a form of art. Sure, some tips are funnier than others. You will laugh if you enjoy the absurd. You will be puzzled and disappointed if you take things literally. But really, don't you know how to wash your hair?!

Helpful How To's.......2006-08-19
Want to know how to fold a fitted sheet? This book will tell you!
Each chapter unfolds as a series of mini-essays on the home life by experts, with the COO of a pest control company teaching how to prevent household pests, a field editor for Audubon explaining how to select and use a birdfeeder, Dr. Joy Browne offering suggestions for learning how to compromise, pediatrics professor Harvey Knapp instructing on how to discipline your children, etc. The pieces are compact, and most have at least one "take-away," so it's easy to pick the book up, read for five minutes and glean some useful bit of info. On the downside, a few areas beg for a more in-depth explanation, and the vast array of advice covered means that there are some odd juxtapositions (e.g., "increase your energy" is followed by "secure a mortgage"). Still, few books can manage to instruct readers on selecting window treatments, making time for yourself and hosting a dinner party with such streamlined simplicity.
