    Book Description

This is a new and completely revised edition of 'The Geology of Devon', first published in 1982 and reprinted three times.

Each chapter in this new edition has been thoroughly revised and rewritten to reflect the major changes in knowledge since the first edition. There are four additional chapters, on Geological Pioneers, Engineering Geology, Environmental Geology and Off-shore Geology. The book also lists all official and local sites of geological and geomorphological interest and includes an expanded reference list and a color geological map.

The Geology of Devon is aimed at all readers with an amateur or professional interest in geology and undergraduate fieldworkers will find the book particularly helpful. It is a companion volume to 'The Geology of Cornwall', also published by University of Exeter Press.

                      Book Description

Within the past decade, lacrosse has seen explosive growth on the elementary, junior and high school, and college levels, rapidly becoming one of America's most popular playing sports. Lifelong lacrosse player and coach Daniel Morris, along with noted author Michael Morris, distill the essence of this exciting, fast-paced game into one compact volume, teaching everything the beginning and intermediate coach needs to know about the rules, equipment, skills, and drills of this venerable game.

Unlike other books on lacrosse, this guide reflects recent important rule changes, as well as the latest techniques in offense and defense, stick-handling, and advances in equipment that have transformed the game as it is played today. Chapters focus on critical elements of individual and team play, conducting practices, skill-building drills, and a playbook of offensive and defensive strategies. A resource list of suppliers, camps, and additional information is included.

This is a book that will find a place on every coach and player's shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Best coaching book I have seen.......2007-05-07

I am coaching youth, middle school, and travel lax teams and have very little on-field lacrosse experience. Of the tools I have found, this book is the most straightforward. When I see the most experienced coaches work, they are using the drills in this book. There is still a lack of good books on intermediate lacrosse offensive and defensive strategies, but this handles all the basics.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning coaches.......2006-10-02

I am very pleased with this book. Great outline of all aspects of the sport. A must have for beginning coaches and/or parents with kids starting to play lacrosse.

                      5 out of 5 stars Lacrosse Newbie.......2006-06-26

Since it is nearly impossible to find anything in "Lacrosse for Adults" for those who are new to the sport and would love to learn to play, I got this book in the hopes of learning the basics. I haven't had a chance to put the new knowledge to the test in either play or instruction, but it was a very valuable tool for the novice player or coach. GO MAMMOTH! GO OUTLAWS!

                      5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Helpful.......2006-03-25

I am the parent of two young boys who are showing an interest in lacrosse and recently signed up for a local youth team. I grew up playing baseball and soccer and did not have any idea how the game of lacrosse is played. This book has given me the knowledge of basic skills that I need to play with my sons now and I can see that its more advanced chapters will be useful for years to come. Although its title suggests that it is geared for coaching, I highly recommend it to any parent who is interested in learning about lacrosse and supporting their children as they become involved with this growing sport.

                      5 out of 5 stars ...at last!.......2006-03-20

Yes, at last a book that covers everything from novice to coaching for Lacrosse. Well written and informative, which makes it interesting and a easy read. I bought this book for my nephew who's a high school Lacrosse coach. He was thrilled, he told me there is almost nothing written about this sport, especially in such an easy to read and informative style. As he said. "If you're interested in Lacrosse, this is the book."

5 out of 5 stars Arguably the best strategy book written for either field or box lacrosse.......2006-09-22

The reviewer below is apparently befuddled because Hinkson's classic book doesn't seem to be about Field Lacrosse. He is correct in that. This book is about Box Lacrosse, the indoor game that is Canada's National summer sport. Box Lacrosse and its variant, Indoor Lacrosse, are becoming increasingly popular in the United States and this book is THE BIBLE of Box Lacrosse. Moreover, many of Hinkson's principles of the game and descriptions of the coordination required among players are central to both forms of the game. This is, however, a thinking person's book. It not only describes what offensive and defensive strategies exist, but also why they work and when to use them, given the team composition available to a coach. If you want to KNOW lacrosse, rather than know about lacrosse, this is the book for you. Folks with a more casual interest in the game will likely find this volume WAY too detailed.

In my opinion, this is a five star book for field lacrosse coaches and serious fans. There are not enough stars available to give Hinkson his due if one is a fan of Box Lacrosse.

2 out of 5 stars "Hockey Team strategies".......2004-01-16

Although this book supplied a lot of information, it did not give the information i was looking for. For example...zone defenses are played with six players, and the game of lacrosse involves an "X" man...This book is more about hockey and basketball, and the diagrams used are that of a hockey rink! The proper terminology, atleast in Jersey and New York, is "Man-up" and not "Power-play!" The drills listed are very good, but I would not recommend this to a youth league coach who is starting a new program with little experience of the game.

5 out of 5 stars A must for coaches and players of box AND field lacrosse!.......1999-08-18

I can not begin to tell the sleepless nights I spent revamping and retooling our FIELD lacrosse team's offense with ideas from Hinkson's book. ALthough it is based on the box game, most of the principles apply directly (or can be modified) to the field game. Along with his fundmentals book, I highly recommend this book to any aspiring fan, coach, or player of the fastest game on 2 feet.

                      2 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag.......2007-01-27

A friend got this for me on my 30th birthday, and I thought it was the perfect gift...until I read it.

I was reminded of an infamous assignment one teacher gave my class in Junior High: We were asked to explain, in writing, how to tie our shoes--the goal being, of course, to make us aware just how difficult it can be to effectively articulate ANYTHING.

Needless to say, most of us failed...but I'm feeling a little better about myself now that I've read this book. Most of these 'experts' simply CANNOT explain/impart much of what they know in writing--making their entries frustrating, especially for people like me, who were actually hoping to pick up a tip or two from reading the book!

What's interesting to note, though, is that the 'problem' entries are usually not the oddly nebulous ones, like Stephen Covey's terrific MANAGE YOUR TIME. It's the 'simple' ones like MAKE A BED that, mysteriously, elude their authors.

                      A mixed bag.

                      5 out of 5 stars Useful I'd say.......2007-01-12

I had this on talking book and found it very interesting and downright useful so I bought it in book form for my daughter and her fiance. I am not out there in the world meeting and greeting but they are so I thought they would get a lot of mileage from it. They seem to enjoy it.

Presumably, everyone already knows how to breathe and make a bed. Clearly, there's another point to this book other than to teach you how-to. Reading this little gem is something like watching an episode of Monk: you share in the madness of people who pay attention to aspects of the mundane and turn the quotidian into a form of art. Sure, some tips are funnier than others. You will laugh if you enjoy the absurd. You will be puzzled and disappointed if you take things literally. But really, don't you know how to wash your hair?!

                      Book Description

Read a little, learn a lot!

In the bestselling The Experts’ Guide to 100 Things Everyone Should Know How to Do, the world’s most knowledgeable experts provided unparalleled insights into mastering the little things in life that are often invariably the hardest to accomplish. Now, Experts’ Guide series creator Samantha Ettus once again brings together 100 renowned experts who share their proficiency and know-how to show you not only how to make your home more beautiful, but how to live more happily in it.

The first book to join three home-related genres—home improvement, self-help, and interior design—The Experts’ Guide to Life at Home is the ultimate must-have guide to mastering your domain. Divided into six sections (To Nest, To Protect, To Improve, To Beautify, To Relax, and To Enjoy), 100 of the world’s leading experts provide consummate insight into how to successfully accomplish everything from properly folding fitted sheets, as taught by the world’s leading computational origami expert; to hanging holiday lights, with guidance from the man who decorates the world-renowned Rockefeller Center Christmas tree; to carving a turkey, with instructions from Oprah’s personal chef.

                      The experts include:

                      • Al Roker, on how to Create a Family Barbecue

                      • Senator Dianne Feinstein, on how to Prevent Identity Theft

                      • Joy Browne, on how to Compromise

                      • Ina Garten, on how to Host a Dinner Party

                      • Harvey Karp, on how to Discipline Your Children

                      • Susie Coelho, on how to Make the Most of a Spare Room

                      • Jorge Cruise, on how to Incorporate Fitness into Your Daily Life

                      • Alexandra Stoddard, on how to Lead a Happy Life

The contributors to The Experts’ Guide to Life at Home range from instantly recognizable names like Rachael Ray and Leeza Gibbons to industry leaders like the CEO of AARP and the co-creators of the hit TV show The Amazing Race. All have been chosen for inclusion because they are at the very top of their profession, be it finance, cooking, relationships, medicine, security, or even building the perfect snowman.

From the bedroom to the kitchen, the kid’s room to the basement, the backyard to the front yard, The Experts’ Guide to Life at Home makes it easy to read a little and learn a lot about making the most of your home.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful How To's.......2006-08-19

Want to know how to fold a fitted sheet? This book will tell you!
Each chapter unfolds as a series of mini-essays on the home life by experts, with the COO of a pest control company teaching how to prevent household pests, a field editor for Audubon explaining how to select and use a birdfeeder, Dr. Joy Browne offering suggestions for learning how to compromise, pediatrics professor Harvey Knapp instructing on how to discipline your children, etc. The pieces are compact, and most have at least one "take-away," so it's easy to pick the book up, read for five minutes and glean some useful bit of info. On the downside, a few areas beg for a more in-depth explanation, and the vast array of advice covered means that there are some odd juxtapositions (e.g., "increase your energy" is followed by "secure a mortgage"). Still, few books can manage to instruct readers on selecting window treatments, making time for yourself and hosting a dinner party with such streamlined simplicity.

                        Book Description

Books about organizing the clutter that plagues most people can be as daunting as the clutter itself. 31 Words to Organize Your Life streamlines this process to its essence by tapping the power of a single word. Drawing from a variety of spiritual traditions, ancient wisdom, and contemporary psychologists, the book helps readers uncover and cultivate their own hidden powers of focus, determination, and concentration to eliminate clutter in their lives. Each entry includes a single word, an accompanying essay, along with three thoughtful tips or exploratory questions, plus an affirmation or meditation. Whether the challenge is in time management, office clutter, or disorganized closets, 31 Words to Organize Your Life shows how to harness the power of a single word to transform a project — and a life — from the inside out. Designed for portability, the book helps even the most disorganized person conjure peace and order from chaos.
