Unique Love Story of Utah Wilderness.......2004-05-15
Ward Roylance began exploring the Southern Utah wilderness in the early 1940s. He remained enamored of it the rest of his life. This book, a bit idiosyncratic and biographical at times, is a log of his backcountry travels, a plea for wilderness preservation and, most importantly, an almost childlike description of the profound effect wilderness had on him and his wife. Numberous black and white photos. Ward's wife Gloria's poetry is quoted here and there in the book. To the Roylances the Utah Wilderness and Colorado Plateau were "ineffable." Their plain, but sincere, love of wilderness is evident throughout the book. Ward and Gloria's words touched me like only a few others --- Thoreau, Abbey, Emerson, Muir and Leopold. This is a very special book!
Book Description
"There is nothing that you need to know about tarpon and pursuing them with flies that is not contained in this book."
-Flip Pallot, in the Foreword
Tarpon On Fly draws from two primary sources-the observations and knowledge that come with Rob's nearly 20 years' experience as a professional tarpon fishing guide, and the journals and the curiosity of lifelong fly fisherman Donald who came late to tarpon fishing but has savored every hour of it. The knowledge and experience of these two men has led to the definitive book on fly-fishing for the Silver King. Tarpon On Fly includes: in-depth coverage of tarpon biology and behavior; tackle; rigging up; flies for tarpon; setting up to cast; aiming and casting; retrieving; striking; fighting; guides and anglers; tournaments; references; and so much more. Clear illustrations and photography further enhance this classic. We couldn't have said it any better than Flip.

All You Need to Know.......2003-01-12
As Flip Pallot says in the books' introduction, "...there is nothing that you need to know about tarpon and pursuing them with flies that is not contained in this book...".
The information that Larmouth and Fordyce share within this book is simple, concise and as complete as it gets. Add to that Larmouth's wonderful narratives that preceede each chapter, and you feel like you are on the casting platform of the guide's skiff! I found the book both entertaining and instructional and the photography is superb. A must read for anyone who is serious about fishing for tarpon on fly!

Book Description
In Tarpon Quest, Cole offers a vivid and detailed look at his quarry, the great silver king, and of the exquisite waters of the Florida Keys and the Marquesas Islands that it inhabits. He describes the dramatic pursuit of these huge fish with fly rod and flies - near misses, heartrendering failures, the earned (and unearned) successes of others, and finally his own chance. (51/2 X 81/4, 112 pages)

Cole captures the gill-plate-rattling-surge of salted fish........1999-06-01
John Cole LIVES fly fishing...splatteing his days on shallow-draft boats into tales that haul us all to the splintered, warped planks of Key West...to the wind-lashed channels of obsessive pursuit. READ THIS BOOK--a tropical drink stitched to your discontent...small enough to hide in the side pocket of a commuter's valise.
Book Description
After an astonishing career on Wall Street, Anthony Weston Dimock pioneered the modern sport of tarpon fishing. This legendary 1911 masterwork embodies all of the expeditionary drama and excitement you would expect pursuing a primitive fish in primitive waters while using primitive equipment. It is a delight--vintage Florida and the Everglades teeming with leaping, crashing, somersaulting fish--defining, in many ways, what a great fishing book should be. With a new introduction by author/angler Tosh Brown, we are proud to publish this one again, our third edition.
Customer Reviews:
Expensive for what you get.......1998-10-25
This volume contains 75 pages of crucial information about the big three. It also contains inane pictures of a "green-toed [sic] sloth," an amazon parrot, a hybiscus, bouganvillia, and a statue of some people somewhere. There are also several pages of detailed resort descriptions that lend the book a distastefully commercial air.
The information about bonefish, tarpon, and permit is of high quality, but it seems diluted by empty glitz and commercialism. Take that away, cut the price in half, and you have a good value.
Book Description
Sea Level, by Jeffrey Cardenas, author of the acclaimed Marquesa, is a collection of vivid essays on saltwater fly fishing written over the past twenty years.
This book is a pure delight--so filled with fresh original language that it forms a unique portrait of an artist, a writer, and an expert angler and naturalist.
And it is the author's quiet, observant and steady hand that guides us on a wide range of adventures: from the Gulf Coast to Cuba; from the Florida Keys and Bahamas to the North Atlantic. Sea Level exudes the highest level of angling skill and will be required reading for years to come.

Beyond Catching Fish.......2004-08-22
The thing I love about this book is that it puts things in perspective. I love to salt water fly fish but it is the fishing and being around others who love the sport that makes it special. Catching and landing the fish is just the icing on the cake! I really like the way the author uses his real life experiences as a guide and fisherman. These are great stories and I like the look of the cover. It is a little pricy but it makes a great coffee table book...I feel it will be a collectible some day. I just hope Mr. Cardenas writes more to add to the collection.
tells it like it is.......2003-05-15
VFR and low altitude over the Atlantic from Montauk to Chesapeake Bay made yesterday's down-and-back aerial commute to our partner-shipyard a perfect backdrop . . . I devoured Sea Level. The 26-essay collection (compiled over 15 years) conveys Jeffrey Cardenas' eclectic adventures in saltwater angling - from both ends of the skiff, knee-deep, and up to his neck. Bonefish to bluefin, the author has experienced it all.
Tropical environments, oceanic wildness, and the right attitude to face these elements are misunderstood by many anglers. Cardenas' naturalist's perspective is a constant in his writing; he provides fascinating windows through which the harsh, complex and often subtle world where we pursue game may be glimpsed. Among vast, seemingly disconnected fragments of natural phenomena Jeffrey draws understandable constellations. It's fascinating, entertaining prose.
The essay "Barracudas" will make you laugh. "Survivor" will make you think - really think. You'll feel a raw seascape in "Bonefish Wilderness" (my favorite). His words on bonefish (woven through many stories) are collectively as enlightening as texts devoted entirely to that species.
I recommend Sea Level to fly-rodders of all backgrounds; it's a great read that tells it like it is.
change the title!!.......2002-12-30
While the writing is good and the stories are interesting, saltwater fly fisherman share a "snootiness" that is a bit off-putting to us guys who are quite content with our "boat rods".
The title of the book and/or cover ought be changed to indicate it is a fly fishing book, in my opinion. Of course, the market is much smaller and no doubt the author and publisher considered this when deciding on a title. And, the price ... is a bit out of whack as well.
Book Description
The master's hard-won knowledge on catching these prized saltwater gamefish.
Book Description
From Key West to Belize to Venezuela, Tosh Brown's career as a sporting travel agent allowed him to passionately pursue this big-eyed behemoth of the Atlantic. This is his insightful and humorous account of more than a decade chasing the Silver King with a fly rod, adding some heartfelt commentary and discussion, as well as a storied history of the tarpon fishery along his native Texas coast. This new Meadow Run Press book is illustrated with a full-color section of the author's stunning photographs along with never before seen photographs of some spectacular early tarpon fishing by some daring and adventurous fishermen.
Customer Reviews:
This one's not for the gear fisherman!.......2002-05-18
The reader from Arkansas below obviously missed the point of this book. Perhaps he was disappointed that Mr. Brown didn't include a chapter on how to fish for tarpon with dynamite?
A pleasant departure from the norm!.......2002-02-15
Finally! A fresh new voice, and a departure from the mind numbing array of expert opinion fly fishing books that are floating around these days. Brown won't tell you how you should catch a tarpon on the fly, but he will tell you why! This is an entertaining book for the saltwater fly fisherman, and a beautifully bound edition for the angling book collector.
Not worth the money.......2002-02-05
For the amount of money asked, I was expecting more information about tarpon, gear, and fishing tactics. Instead, what I got was a testimonial that one person likes to fish for tarpon - plus a short history of one former fishing site.
Great Stories For Those Who Love Tarpon!.......2001-05-10
If you've ever hooked a tarpon on the fly, or hope to someday, you need to read this book. The author does a great job of detailing all of the strange quirks and bizzare behaviors of the Silver King, and he does it with humor, good dialect, and a keen observation of the tarpon and his habitat. A beautifully bound book with great photos, great stories...a quick and entertaining read for the fly fisherman!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent high-level overview.......2007-06-07
This book is an excellent high-level overview of multivariate statistics and the techniques for working with multivariate data.
It doesn't go into detail making it a very good read for people wanting to learn multivariate concepts.
Reading and Understanding Multivariate Statistics by Grimm.......2006-02-25
A good resource for someone taking a psyc stat class.
Fantastic Treatment of Sophisticated Mathemeatical Concepts.......2004-11-05
I've long wanted a better explanation of Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues than I recieved in a econometrics or statistics textbook. This book gives me an incredibly clear understanding of what they are. Now when I look back at the mathematical interpretation again it means so much more. This is a fantastic book that would highly recommend to anyone wanting a clear conceptual understanding of these sophisticated topics. 5 stars, no questions about it!
Great Resource for Statistics.......2003-08-07
In many introductory statistics courses you usually do not cover multivariate statistics. This book and its companion volume are useful for anyone in upper level undergraduate or graduate programs. It is a great reference to have when planning research.
You can read it all at once to get a general understanding of this area or you can look at it as you need it as a reference. It was much better than the statistics books I have had as required reading in courses. It's a great resource overall!
I read it - and I understood it!.......2002-11-01
"Reading and Understanding Multivariate Statistics" achieves exactly what its title implies. Geared toward non-statisticians in behavioral and social science fields, this book provides clear and reasonably simple explanations of some of the most common multivariate analyses. Each chapter focuses on a different analysis and presents its conceptual underpinnings, underlying assumptions, and basic procedures with a minimum of equations and many concrete examples. It does not teach you how to perform the analyses but does provide references for those who wish to get more detailed information. As a research scientist who doesn't always remember everything I learned in graduate statistics class, I find this book an invaluable aid keeping up with the current literature in my field and in making the most of statistical consultations. This book is ideal for anyone whose job requires them to be a "consumer" of research; for researchers who wish to further their understanding of data analysis; and as a companion text for graduate statistics classes.
Customer Reviews:
These guys are great! .......2007-01-04
Grimm and Yarnold really offer great, user-friendly explanations of stats. I've used these for 3 years now, and they were great for getting through coursework and dissertation.
I highly recommend these books!
Great Statistics Resource.......2003-08-07
This book and its companion volume are invaluable resources if you need to understand or work with multivariate statistics. It is easy to read and I would recommend it over any of the required texts that I have had for statistics courses.
I read more - and I understood more!.......2003-03-21
Like its predecessor, "Reading and Understanding MORE Multivariate Statistics" achieves exactly what its title implies. Geared toward non-statisticians in behavioral and social science fields, this book provides clear and reasonably simple explanations of common multivariate analyses. This book includes special attention to scales of measurement, reliability and generalizability theory, item response theory, and assessing the validity of measurement. In addition, it covers cluster analysis, Q-technique factor analysis, structural equation modeling, canonical correlation analysis, repeated measures analysis, and survival analysis. The authors present the conceptual underpinnings, underlying assumptions, and basic procedures for each analysis with a minimum of equations and many concrete examples. The book not teach you how to perform the analyses but does provide references for those who wish to get more detailed information.

This book got me right into the Inuit culture, which is very foreign to me, but it still captured the emotions of any girl's coming of age story. Lots of great details, both historical and cultural, and on top of that, an endearing romance as well. Minik's Story had me engaged from cover to cover.
