Book Description

Although our oceans are some of the most beautiful and diverse environments in the world, most people know very little about the ocean's ecology or just how much humans depend on the oceans for survival.

The Complete Idiot's GuideÂ' to the Oceans will be a marine-lover's reference for mapping the world's oceans and their exploration.

Authors will provide key illustrations to help readers understand important concepts along the way with a color photo insert presenting a wide array of marine creatures and habitats.

5 out of 5 stars But Not So Complete Idiots Will Like It Too........2006-11-25

Of course one has to be predisposed to an interest in this topic, but if you saw David Attenbourrough's recent Blue Planet Series you will come away with a similar impression but a much more in-depth knowledge of the subject. As a former oceanography student I can say that this book is aimed at readers of all levels of knowledge. They make a potentially dry topic (no pun meant) quite interesting. The chapters consist of describiing estuaries in the land-sea ecotome to the barren and alien quality of the abyssal plain. Marine flora and fauna are featured prominently. I recommend this for anyone with a casual interest and greater. Looks good on a bookshelf also!

Most books about the sinking of Titanic go out of their way to honor the somber occasion, but somber is not the style of the Complete Idiot's Guide series. This is one perky account of calamity, with hundreds of punning headlines ("Cruisin' for a Bruisin'"), a "riveting" account of the ship's construction, and cartoons such as one depicting Death examining a cargo checklist: "2,000 people. 1 iceberg (to be picked up)." It's a treasure-trove of trivia (and significa), with a zillion bite-size bits neatly organized in sensible categories: historical overviews, wreckage exploration, entertainments inspired by the disaster. Strewn throughout the book like orderly flotsam are boxed items featuring fun facts grouped under five rubrics: "Blow Me Down!" (bizarre coincidences and other eyebrow raisers), "Catch the Drift" (definitions of specialized terms), "SOS" (various problems faced aboard the ship and after the fact, including myths and fallacies), "Ahoy There!" (firsthand accounts), and "Lifesavers" (upbeat items--acts of heroism and good things that came out of the wreck, such as Bob Dylan's allegedly Titanic-inspired tune "Desolation Row" on Highway 61 Revisited).

And that's just a drop in the bucket of the lore in this book. Did you know that the wreck launched the career of a New York high school dropout and 21-year-old nobody who beat all the newspapers to the story via the newfangled technology of wireless radio? The kid, David Sarnoff, became president of RCA and the patriarch of television at NBC. For a book smaller than a steamer trunk, the Complete Idiot's Guide packs an impressive load. (For a booklike object literally shaped like a steamer trunk, try The Titanic Collection: Mementos of the Maiden Voyage.) --Tim Appelo

Book Description

With the blockbuster successes of James Cameron's Titanic, its best-selling companion book, and the Broadway musical of the same name, it's clear people have an insatiable appetite for all things Titanic. This fascinating work tells newcomers all about the ship-from its inception, to its building, to the media hype surrounding its fatal maiden voyage, to the passengers aboard, to an up-to-date explanation of how it is believed the iceberg crash caused the ship to sink, to the chaos that ensued, to survivors' stories, and more. This thorough retrospective also contains information on recent underwater recoveries, quotes from survivors, ample illustrative material, and even insights into the Titanic's impact on contemporary pop culture.

1 out of 5 stars Overrated historical event that shouldn't be remembered.......2004-10-10

The Spanish Influenza Pandemic killed 40 million people. The sinking of The Titanic killed around 1500. To the reviewer Piper. You wasted 15 years of your life studying this worthless Titanic event?

4 out of 5 stars A terrific ready reference but needs a slight updating........2001-08-06

For those who do not need love stories or socialogical studies, this is a terrific reference book. It is touted as trivia, but it is much more than that. It is also very accurate except for the final analysis of iceberg vs. rivets. For years I never believed that the iceberg ripped a gash in the ship like a knife. That could not happen simply because ice is much, much softer and much, much more brittle than one-inch thick steel plates. But the iceberg is massive, several times heavier than the ship. So it was just a matter of weight that pushed the shell plating in and ripping open rivet seams like zippers. This book addresses some of those findings and misses the final analysis by only a split hair when it mentions the possibility of inferior iron in the rivets. In fact, William Garzke of Gibbs and Cox (see his and Dunlin's books on Battleships) analyzed the few rivets that were recovered from Titanic and found them to be highly contaminated with carbon inclusions. It is apparent then that rather than being forged from high quality steel bar stock (as the High Tensile Steel rivets were for American warships) the rivets were quickly cast in multiple molds for fast production. The reheating and driving of the rivets did not restructure the grains of the alloy to give the shank maximum resistance against shear as a forged rivet would. Hopefully the next printing of the book will include this finding.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book for Titanic Fun Facts.......2000-09-24

This book has the basic facts about Titanic, but it also has some really cool facts about the ship and the people on it. It's a great reference book if you need to look up a fact, instead of trying to read every single detail about the ship in a big book. (I've tried it) But if you do want a more detailed book look some where else. My favorite things about this book are- The appendixes, the good layout, and all the weird facts (I like the chapter Deep Prophicies)

1 out of 5 stars Someone missed the boat.. so many inaccuracies.......2000-05-07

I have studied the wreck of the Titanic for over 15 years and I've found this book to be lacking some of the basic details. For example, the book stated that all the women and children from First and Second class survived. This is not true. The book also mentioned the Navratil boys (the Orphans of the Deep) who were misnamed Lolo and Momon in the book. The boys' real names were Edmond (2 years old) and Michel (4 years old). Aside from the trivial facts, I feel that the book makes light of this horrendous disaster with the cartoon characters. The book was confusing because it didn't follow any chronological order before or after the accident. This might be difficult to someone who doesn't know much about what happened on 14-15 April, 1912. The book mentions a color photo spread in the middle of the book, but these photos can be seen anywhere and add little, if any, historical significance. {For example: There are a few pictures of the mostly intact bow, but none of the severely damaged stern. The picture spread consists mostly of still frames from several movies that have been done about the Titanic). This book might be entertaining to those who want to be somewhat enlightened about the disaster; however, those who have studied the Titanic in detail should probably pass this one up. Those who might read it for fun should be aware of the many inaccuracies contained in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to Read & Nicely Sectioned.......1999-10-13

It's not hard to see all the mistakes in this book, because I had been reading about Titanic (along with a few other wrecks) for the last 16 years. It's not quite proper to see the cartoonish characters on just about every page, but it seems to be "The Complete Idiot's Guide" series' style and trademark. I hate to see those mistakes in there, but nonetheless, it is a pretty "complete guide" to this grand dame named Titanic. It's filled with vast information divided in small sections that reading it is not hard at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great information!.......2005-08-20

I have been on 15 cruises, and this book is right on. I have read alot of books about crusing and if you have never been on a cruise or have been on many, you will enjoy this book. Gives you little tips and tricks and just explains how things all work on the cruise ship and in the ports you visit. Everything from the food, what to wear, how to pack, the staff and entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Bon Book!.......2001-06-09

This is an amazing find. It has everything a rookie or a veteran to cruising will ever need. I found it very helpful in planning my sixth cruise. But, I have also passed it on to first time cruisers who couldn't be more thankful. Detailed descriptions on all types of cruise ships, ports of call, shore excursions. And helpful hints on how to save $$ on booking, why to use a travel agent and what to pack. I wish I could find a book that was similiar, I've read this one too many times...

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR THE FIRST TIME CRUISER!.......2000-03-20

I found this book to be excellent. I read it cover to cover before my husband and I cruised last year. I felt like I already had a jump start when we boarded our boat. I liked reading about all of the boats and that was how we decided on the cruise we took. The chapters were divided so you could pick the ones that contained information that was vital to you. We are going on yet another cruise with our children so I went back and reread the Chapter that is about cruising with kids. I would recommend this book to anyone even thinking about taking a cruise vacation.

1 out of 5 stars CRUISERS ARE NOT IDIOTS.......1999-09-23

This book is too big and covers too little that the average first- or multiple-time cruiser wants or needs to know.

Much of the information -- particularly about ships -- is time-sensitive and outdated. This may be corrected in the next edition, but will probably by out-dated by the time the new and improved version "ships".

It's hard to figure out why "Cruise Lingo Word-Find" ... one of those puzzles where you draw lines around particular terms, was worth a page in the book. Many of the 446 pages are what might be called, kindly, "filler."

The set-in about meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous was particularly grating. Any member of AA knows that "Friends of Bill W" is the buzz term to be found in the ship's newspaper or anywhere else members might meet.

The tips on tipping are quite off-base. The idea of tipping one-half to either a room steward or a waiter for a child makes no sense. Anyone with children knows that they're more trouble than the average adult ... and they do take up a seat in the dining room ... and probably want to order from a kids' menu. Tipping half for more work?

Further, the author states that the tip exceptions are "ritzy Seabourne and Radisson" then goes on to say that a cruiser OUGHT to tip on Radisson?

This book would have benefitted from a good copy editor and a first-class fact-checker, to say nothing of an expert in design.

Overall, this is not a well-researched or well-presented book.

There are a few good bits of information included, but paying for the book might put the buyer in the "Idiot" class.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of cruise travel for the novice........1998-10-03

An enjoyable introduction to the world of cruise travel, this book provides a thorough overview for those of us new to this form of indulgence. I have read Cruse Travel magazine and various cruise travel guides, in anticipation of our first cruise. This book offered the first detailed step-by-step approach to making all the important decisions.

The contents covers seven area: making the decision, tips on discounts and deals, the cruise lines and their ships, cruise planning practicalities, the ports of embarkation, what to expect of the cruise experience, visiting the ports of call, and wrapping up your cruise.

I highly recommend this to anyone planning their first (and subsequent) cruise.

Harry Steeves is one of the best of the modern innovators in fly tying, and this collection of his best patterns, largely terrestrials, and all involving foam in one way or another, is even better than his first book, because the instructions are much clearer. Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Okay, if you like making word processing templates yourself.......2007-02-18

You need to decide whether you write from the seat-of-your-pants or whether you are a planner. This book is for planners. Buy No Plot, No Problem if you are the other sort.

Okay, you're a planner. Should you buy this book. Well, it doesn't cost much and it has a decent system. Other systems to look at would be the Marshall Plan, the Weekend Novelist or The Novelist's Bootcamp.

I would recommend How to Write a Damn Good Mystery to either sort.

What's wrong this book? The most important parts of this book are the worksheets. They are printed in the book. You must copy them and write on the copies in long hand or take the time to reproduce them all using your word processor.

I myself would rather spend my time writing. In this day in age there is not reason why I should not be able to download the worksheets in electronic format. I would even settle for paying more for them; however, the publisher gives a lame excuse that doesn't cut it--basically, they just don't want to do it.

Here's the excuse from the author's web site:

Q. I just got my hands on the book a couple of days ago, Karen, and I'm in love. What I do wish...that I could order a CD with all the forms instead of having to copy or remake them. I know they all existed as forms on your computer...and I know Writer's Digest does CDs with its Writer's Market. Any possibilities there? Also, it occurred to me that you might want to do online workshops...and you could include the forms in the workshop if you don't have copyright or permission conflicts.

A. Since my background is with small press and electronic publishers, one of the first questions I asked Writer's Digest Books was about offering 1) an inexpensive workbook that included only the worksheets, so they could be re-used easily for each new project, and 2) printable order forms on my website. The first suggestion wasn't possible--this isn't something WDB does normally. As for the second option, I was told that since the worksheets are one of the most valuable aspects of the book--the heart of it, it's not really feasible to put more than three of the worksheets on my website. I chose the most frequently used ones or the most intensive, so those are the ones available on the website now. Please be aware that it's illegal to distribute or put these worksheets on any website. You may make copies for your own use, or download them to you computer for individual use.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Book, IF you want to Outline your Novel in Advance.......2006-12-28

There are basically two types of fiction writers. There are the ones that thoroughly outline the book in advance (Dan Brown did a 200 page outline of the Da Vinci Code before he wrote the book) and those that essentially make up the story as they go along (Stephen King and Dean Koontz are examples).

If you're like me, outlining is a must. I'm a very structure-oriented person, and I like to plan things out in advance. So for me, FIRST DRAFT IN 30 DAYS is a very helpful book, because it is essentially a manual on how to do a highly detailed outline of a novel. This is probably the best handbook on novel outlining that I have ever read.

The problem with outlining, however, is that it is difficult to reduce every work of fiction to the same type of outline. Karen Wiesner is a romantic suspense author, so her outline template works mainly for novels in that genre. Her approach will therefore not work if you're writing something different (a literary novel, a comedic novel, etc.)

So this book is great if (1) you like outlining and (2) plan on writing a book in the suspense/thriller genre. If you don't fit these categories, then this book will probably be of little practical use.

5 out of 5 stars BRINGING ORDER TO THE PROCESS.......2006-11-30

First Draft in 30 Days, by Karen Wiesner, presents an orderly approach to the potentially messy process of creating a novel. Whether or not you ever actually write an entire first draft within thirty days, Wiesner's format provides a track to run on, to help get organized. It's an opportunity to satisfy the left brain's need for structure and organization, so the right brain can romp and play.

No doubt, some readers will cringe at the 30-day approach. As novelists, we often lack deadlines, self-imposed or not. This is a potential pitfall, as the time absorbed in the completion of any task tends to expand to the time available.

Some writers may worry that the resulting formatted outline may not really qualify as a first draft. Rather than be turned off by the whole concept of outlining and organization, use the portions that work for you and ignore the rest.

And if you're like me, you occasionally end up with a manuscript that "needs something." Wiesner outlines a process for using First Draft in 30 Days to troubleshoot a manuscript and get back on track. This by itself is worth the price of the book.

2 out of 5 stars Really, I wouldn't bother.......2006-08-13

I don't think Karen Wiesner's plotting techniques can be applied to any piece of fiction worth reading. All you need to do is flip to worksheet 15 to see how flawed her system is. She recomends plotting out with short-term goal, thwarting of short-term goal, character reaction. This leads to a very choppy, jumpy piece of fiction. What's worse is that the "real life examples" (she takes published, popular books and uses them to fill out her worksheets as examples) don't even work with her system. There's a bunch of blanks with The Lovely Bones. And she encourages her plotters to fill out every part of the worksheet using detailed instruction-- but in the real life examples each part is rarely more than a sentence! Her instructions are confusing. Her worksheets are confusing. Her examples are confusing.

And even the books she cites as examples do not use the formula she has laid out for plotting. No book has that much reaction. Thank goodness. It would be an awful bore to read!

Save some frustration and read Evan Marshall's workbook instead.

5 out of 5 stars Finally...........2006-05-14

FINALLY a system that's comprehensive, workable, and successful. "First Draft in 30 Days" is not the typical blah, blah, blah scenario of most supposed writing guides (and believe me, I've read them all).

I completed my manuscript a year ago, have been submitting to agents, have had some interest, yet knew that something just wasn't working with the manuscript.

In less than a week, I've narrowed down the organizational issues. By the end of June, the manuscript will be cohesive and salable--thanks to "First Draft in 30 Days."

Wish I could have read a book that was so instructive years ago, but since "First Draft in 30 Days" was only recently released, I'm thrilled to have it in my creative little hands now.

Thanks to "First Draft in 30 Days," I'm well on my way to publication!

        Book Description

        Lights. Camera. Backstabbing.
My sister, Eva, just hit the big time as a TV teen–but the big time is hitting back. Someone on the set is planting lies about her in the gossip columns. Can I crack the case before Eva becomes just another falling star?
My camera is trained on two jealous actresses, one kick-butt publicist, and the boy next door (well, he plays one on TV). No one is playing their part as expected. As it turns out . . . not even me.

        4 out of 5 stars Go Backstage.......2006-12-08

Sixteen-year-old Eva Ortiz dazzles viewers weekly on a hit television sitcom. Her younger sister, Jessica, does not have any acting aspirations, preferring to led an average life off-camera. When accidents start happening on the set and things start to go missing, Jess decides it's up to her to solve the mysteries.

Jess often has pratfalls, but she also has a very big heart. In fact, the entire family is loving and supportive. Though she is a rising star, Eva is very down-to-earth and likable.

A quick read which is refreshing clean, Hollywood Sisters: Backstage Pass is suitable for young readers who want a little mystery, a little glamour, and a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-11-27

Thirteen-year-old Jessica Ortiz can't quite decide if she's blessed or cursed. On the one hand, there's the fact that her sixteen-year-old older sister, Eva, is the breakout star of the new television hit, Two Sisters. On the other hand, there's the fact that the fame, fortune, and money that come from having an older sister who is a Hollywood star seems to be driving her family slightly crazy.

Oh sure, they now live in a Spanish casa, a house with a library full of fake books, a kitchen that comes complete with a cook and maid, and even a pool. There's even a bulldog named Petunia for Jessica's very own pet, even though her parents had been previously avoiding the issue of pets for years. All of that sounds great, on the surface. But under that surface, though, is the very real fact that someone is attempting to sabotage Eva on the set of Two Sisters.

What starts out for Jessica as Project Stop Slander soon turns into an honest-to-goodness whodunit, as she attempts to find out who is leaking bad publicity pictures of her sister to the press, is stealing her sister's designer wardrobe, and who also seems to be sending her threatening text messages on her cell phone. All of this, while her sister, Eva the star, works with her publicity agent, Keiko, to control the damage as it occurs.

What a total delight, and a wonderful surprise! I can honestly say that I didn't know what to expect when I picked up a copy of BACKSTAGE PASS. What I found, though, was a great, quick read with down-to-earth characters, wonderful dialogue, and, even though the story is set in Hollywood, a truly believable plot. I highly recommend this book to everyone, whether you're a lover of mysteries, a middle school student, or an older, reluctant reader looking for something that won't take up a lot of time. I, for one, am anxiously awaiting the second book in THE HOLLYWOOD SISTERS series, The Hollywood Sisters: On Location (The Hollywood Sisters), which is scheduled to be released in March of 2007. Kudos to Ms. Wilcox for a great new series!

Its up to her sister to take on the case and foil the plot: only trouble is, there are too many possible suspects. Humor abounds in this story of smooth detective work.
