Book Description
The cost of operating a building far exceeds the cost of constructing it, and yet until recently little attention was paid to the impact of solar radiation on the costs of heating, cooling and ventilation. And now that there has been a surge in interest in energy efficiency and solar design, architects and designers need a practical guide to the modelling and application of solar energy data.
There are many different models and techniques available for calculating the distribution of solar radiation on and in buildings, and these algorithms vary considerably in scope, accuracy and complexity. This book demonstrates which of these predictive tools gives the best results in different circumstances, including explaining which models can be best used in different parts of the world.
The author has had over twenty-five years of experience of dealing with solar energy data from four continents and has used that experience in this book to show the development not just of knowledge but also the growing sophistication of the models available to apply it.
*Based on many years of first-hand experience with solar data
*Different models demonstrated and evaluated
*Calculations that can be used anywhere in the world

Heating, Cooling, Lighting: Design Methods for Architects
ASIN: 1873936885 |
Book Description
Typically one third of the energy used in non-domestic buildings is for artificial lighting. Good daylight design in buildings offers huge potential savings -- as high as 70% -- for both new and refurbished buildings. There is also growing evidence that daylit buildings have fewer problems relating to health and well-being of the occupants. Daylight design should be a high priority in new building design and refurbishment.
"Daylight Design of Buildings" provides the necessary tools to assist the designer to provide well-daylit interiors. It also shows that good daylight design is not a restriction on architectural expression -- on the contrary, it is more likely to act as an inspiration and foundation for good architecture.
The book begins with an historical overview against the background of climate, building use and cultural values. It demonstrates the huge impact that the provision of daylight within a building has had upon the architectural expression and meaning, at all levels. The core of the book is devoted to design considerations and techniques, following a logical structure which moves from the geographical location, the site and form of the building, through room design to the detailed design of the windows including advanced daylighting elements. This is supplemented by a reference section including the necessary design data, tools available (both manual and computer-based), and post-occupancy evaluation procedures.
Architects, building designers and building engineers will find "Daylight Design of Buildings" a truly practical handbook applicable to both new-build and refurbishment. The book complements the critical and objective view from the study of the 60 buildings presented in the book Daylight Performance of Buildings (James & James, 1999, Editor: Marc Fontoynont, ISBN 1 873936 87 7). Together, these two books document the principal results of the Daylight Europe project funded by the European Commission.

Description:
Light pipes are simple means of directing daylight (diffuse and direct light) into interior spaces. Previous work by the authors described the initial work on a luminous flux and illuminance predictive model for straight light pipes, using a basic equation for illuminance distribution as a function of horizontal distance. Further work has now produced a model that uses the cosine law of illuminance to describe the distribution of light from the light pipe diffuser as well as takes into account pipe elbow pieces or bends. The resulting illuminance model can be described as a quartic cosine model. By producing a ''luxplot'' prediction for any given light pipe application, it is possible to maximise the potential of these daylight providers and design their configuration to suit any given need. As part of this study, wide-ranging illuminance and luminous flux data were collected both for the formulation of this model (as the formula is semi-empirical) and its validation.

Description:
This paper presents findings from a web-based survey on the current use of daylight simulations in building design. The survey was administered from December 2nd 2003 to January 19th 2004. One hundred and eighty five individuals from 27 countries completed the survey. The majority of respondents worked in Canada (20%), the United States (20%), and Germany (12%). Most participants were recruited through building simulation mailing lists. Their self-reported professions ranged from energy consultants and engineers (38%) to architects and lighting designers (31%) as well as researchers (23%). They worked predominantly on large and small offices and schools. Ninety one percent of respondents included daylighting aspects in their building design. Those who did not consider daylighting blamed lack of information and unwillingness of clients to pay for this extra service. Among those participants who were considering daylighting 79% used computer simulations. This strong sample bias towards computer simulations reflects that many participants had been recruited through building simulation mailing lists. Participants named tools' complexity and insufficient program documentation as weaknesses of existing programs. Self-training was the most common training method for daylight simulation tools. Tool usage was significantly higher during design development than during schematic design. Most survey participants used daylighting software for parameter studies and presented the results to their clients as a basis for design decisions. While daylight factor and interior illuminances were the most commonly calculated simulation outputs, shading type and control were the most common design aspects influenced by a daylighting analysis. The use of scale model measurements had rapidly fallen compared to a 1994 survey, whereas, trust in the reliability of daylighting tools has risen. While participants named a total of 42 different daylight simulation programs that they routinely used, over 50% of program selections were for tools that use the RADIANCE simulation engine, revealing the program's predominance within the daylight simulation community.

Hikes varying from half-hour strolls to full-day adventures, this guidebook is for everyone, including families.
Customer Reviews:
Always Fun, but not Always Easy.......2005-12-19
My wife and I visit Joshua Tree National Park every Thanksgiving Day. Hiking there seems more fun than cooking all day and we always have a wonderful time. Late fall skies there are cobalt blue and the hiking is always fabulous. Numerous trails to desert peaks, pretty rock formations, and of course whole forests of Joshua Trees await those who wish to explore this region and this book by Cunningham and Burke provides a good outline of where to begin.
Like other guides in the "Best Easy Day Hikes" series of Falcon Press, the emphasis here is on shorter hikes. If you are looking for long cross country rambles, other books might be more appropriate for your hiking tastes. Instead, readers here are treated to some of the "classics" in the park. Mastodon Peak (3 miles), Hidden Valley Nature Walk (1 mile) and the Barker Dam Loop (1.1 miles) are typical of the offerings in this guide. These trails are winners and most day hikers will enjoy them.
That said, not every hike listed in this book is truly "easy." The walk to Lost Palms Oasis is over 7 miles of moderately rough terrain and the hikes to Ryan Mountain and Inspiration Peak, while short, are very steep. In addition, some of the truly easy and scenic hikes in the park are not listed in this guide. The Oasis of Mara walk at the visitor center, a pleasant 1/2 to 1.5 mile loop is missing as is the scenic and wheelchair accessible Bajada Loop in the southern portion of the park. I'm sure these oversights will be corrected when the new edition of the authors' more comprehensive "Hiking California Desert Parks" volume comes out. In the meantime, this is a good resource for hiking in Joshua Tree. It is worth the price. Just remember that some "easy" walks are actually quite ambitious.

Authoratative resource. Pretty easy to find information that I've needed so far. Complete reference on systems management trouble codes. You will need a ODB-II scanner to get the trouble codes out though. Try your local auto parts store 1st though.

Knowing how to service everything in your car, priceless.......2007-09-19
I had one to many issues with shady repair shops and got this book for my aging Wolfsburg 1.8T Jetta. The insight into the construction and service of my car has been priceless. You need to bring your own patience, methodical troubleshooting approach, and motivation if you get into the bigger stuff. Yet, whether you have someone else do the work or whether you do everything yourself this book provides invaluable insight. It will certainly pay for itself.

Clique #8, The: Sealed with a Diss: A Clique Novel (Clique Series)
ASIN: 141691322X |
Book Description
The Elemental Good Sense Guide is made up of basic observations I make about people and life, which I then turn into sayings. Elemental -- that's also my nickname, but it's actually more like "Ella Mental." You see: It changes the meaning entirely.
Ella Watson is sensible to a fault. Thanks to the little nuggets of wisdom she collects in her Good Sense Guide, she's the perfect go-to girl for any friend in need. But when Ella has an argument with her best friend, Toby, her faithful guide falls short. Ella has been so focused on her friends that she's missed what's right in front of her face -- now she'll have to trade in sense for sensibility to mend her friendship.
Customer Reviews:
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-07-02
Meet Ella Watson, or, as her friends call her, Ella Mental.
Ella makes sure that she follows and lives by everything written in her Good Sense Guide, the one with all the quotes and rules, such as "Treat others as you would like them to treat you," or "just because you feel something now doesn't mean you will feel this way forever."
Ella's Good Sense Guide is what helps her think straight when she has to deal with her crazy parents, who just aren't able to let Ella have a little freedom, and her obnoxious twin sister, Anna, who seems to be getting into more trouble then usual -- and changing for the worse.
But can the guide help Ella resolve all of her problems with her friends, who are all facing challenges and becoming distant? Like Frannie, whose usual perky self is now down in the dumps, or Pearl, who keeps on choosing the wrong guy. But what worries Ella the most is how her relationship with her best friend, Toby, is beginning to fade away.
At first glance, ELLA MENTAL AND THE GOOD SENSE GUIDE may seem like any other teen novel filled with fluff and no substance, but as the story develops Amber Deckers takes the novel into a different direction than what was assumed. From bullying to racism to a secretly painful childhood, Ms. Deckers depicts issues that most teen novels ignore. ELLA MENTAL AND THE GOOD SENSE GUIDE is one of those stories that you will never forget.

Very good.......2006-08-11
When I picked up this book I wasnt sure if I would enjoy it. I dont read many books set in England so this story was new to me. I loved this book!! Everything about it is fun and well written. I could relate well to Ella and I found myself wishing that I could be more like her. I will be looking for more books by this author.
This Is A Real Page Turner.......2006-08-07
I give this book a five star rating because this was the best book I've ever read. When I can't sleep at night I read a book but, instead of going to sleep I stayed up 'til 6:30a.m. reading this book. The next day I read it a second time. This book really is a reminder for us kids that there will be troublesome times in our life and if we have good friends by our side we can make it through any sticky situation. And who knows your best friend might become more than just a best friend. All I can say is that I can't wait to get the next book.
I highly recommend .......2006-07-24
I finished this book in less than a day. It was such a cute story! I could really relate to Ella. I liked how she was a smart "everygirl." I would love to read more from this author!
Suspenseful.......2006-06-17
I am usually into fantasy books(not that I don't like or even love non-fantasy books)so I like books with exciting adventures. I have been known to put down books that are good but are to slow because a different more exciting book comes along. This book is anything but slow. I picked it up at ten o'clock at night planing on reading a little bit just to help me get to sleep but I couldn't put it down. I read it all in one night even though I was aware how tired I would be the next day. I liked how the conflicts weren't resolved until the last pages on the book. It was very suspenseful and as I said impossible to put down. In the book Ella is easy to relate to, admire, and like. Her experiences help her to find herself, learn about her friends, help them, and find true love. She has an off-beat voice so and sees things differently then I would. I would like to be one of her mates.
