Book Description
This book provides a quantitative treatment of the science of ecotoxicology. The first chapters consider fundamental concepts and definitions essential to understanding the fate and effects of toxicants at various levels of ecological organization as covered in the remaining chapters. Scientific ecotoxicology and associated topics are defined. The historical perspective, rationale, and characteristics are outlined for the strong inferential and quantitative approach advocated in this book. The general measurement process is discussed, and methodologies for defining and controlling variance, which could otherwise exclude valid conclusions regarding ecotoxicological endeavors, are considered. Ecotoxicological concepts at increasing levels of ecological organization are discussed in the second part of the book. Quantitative methods used to measure toxicant effects are outlined in this section. The final chapter summarizes the book with a brief discussion of ecotoxicological assessment. Numerous figures and tables accompany text, with many statistical tables found in the appendix for quick reference. Although the book primarily focuses on aquatic systems, with appropriate modification the concepts and methods can be applied to terrestrial systems.

This book really isn't that helpful. While it does give some good tips on new ways to string your line, it only talks about maybe 20 or so kinds of fish, and spends most of its time talking about fish on the east cost. It devotes a very sparce space to the west coast and only talks about maybe 5 or so fish from the west coast. Overall, very disappointing.

This is not a book at all. It is only 8 pages of info that appears to have been lifted from an encylopedia.

This is a wonderful book for anyone with questions regarding grammar. It explains the rules of grammar with humor and illustrations. This will definitely be an asset to most any classroom!!

If you told me that at the age of 72,I would be buying a book on Grammar,I would have thought you were kidding.My old,long since departed teacher would be flabbergasted.However; not more so, than that I would be writing Book Reviews;and voluntarily at that.He had convinced himself that my only interests were playing pool,chasing girls,eating and sleeping;though not necessarily in that order;but more likely all at the same time.
I can't say that the proper use of grammar and punctuation were the high points on my lists of things to perfect. I did know the difference between "principal" and "principle"(I remind myself that the Principal was my "pal").I remember to use "but also" when I use "not only" and a few other things. So,when I saw this book,I wondered if it could help me with sorting out the difference between "lie" and "lay". Sure enough; it was explained;and now I can see why it is so difficult. A half hour later,I was still thumbing through the book and finding all kinds of interesting stuff;so I bought it.I plan to keep it right beside my Dictionary and Thesaurus and expect I'll turn to it often.I suspect I will continue my loose ways with commas,semicolons,colons,dashes,hyphens dots(I didn't know they were called Ellipses) etc. ;but at least I'll have something to turn to when I want to find out what is "correct.
Each subject is followed with "Brain Ticklers" to help you see if you really understand the points.If you run out of exercises;you can alwys use my review for practice---the only problem is that you're on your own for answers.Feel free to e-mail me it corrected.

Don't forget ,English is a living language,and the rules keep changing all the time.Some live in the past,some are way ahead of the times;and then there are the rest of us---God knows where!!

For any aspiring writers, this guide nails every technique possible in writing. Although it is about mechanics only - not storytelling - it is an essential guide for any writer-to-be and for professional too (for refresher tips!)
Painless Grammar.......2007-06-06
Our son is in 6th grade and was having trouble with writing papers for his classes. We decided to set up a study hall for him in our home till his grades improved. This book was one of the books we gave him to read as part of his study hall time. He sat in our living room chuckling while reading this book, because of the funny examples the author uses. He enjoyed reading the book and said, "This book actually teaches you something you don't know and what is not taught in school." He felt this book, "May make it easier to write." Lastly, he said, "This book is a bit funny. The author uses interesting sentences." As a result of my son reading this book and hearing him laugh while reading it, I decided to read it myself. I find it is helping me to better understand grammar and relearn what I do not remember learning when I was in school. Maybe it will help with my writing skills, too.

My family is moving to Singapore and I was looking for something to tell me a little more about this tiny island country. I feel like I got a good peek at the Asian culture. More than that, though, I enjoyed the different short stories. There were a couple of them that, after reading them, I wanted to know what happened next. I like how the author leaves us wanting to know more. I don't feel like the stories were unfinished at all. It's just that even in a short story, I got wrapped up in these characters so easily!

These short stories cover lots of issues surrounding life overseas - love, loss, loneliness, belief, desire, dreams. I love the way Alison is able to paint a clear picture so we really get to know all the interesting characters and feel what they are feeling. I found Alison's writing very skilful - I could really feel the emotions in each story. There's some good humour too - very cleverly written. Good stuff!

Book Description
African Americans have suffered intensely at the hands of America's dominant group, but the roles played by urban planning, land use policy, and the free market are not well known. Presenting a new conceptual approach, this book considers their locking effect on African Americans, showing, for instance, that one-acre zoning and similar policies in upscale neighborhoods lock African Americans out while market mechanisms in decaying neighborhoods lock them in. Arguing that the locking effect leads to the disenfranchisement of African Americans, Bobo shows how wealth is channeled to the dominant group and African Americans' life choices are denuded, creating a volatile situation. Although classical economic theory holds that a free market allocates scarce resources in the best interest of society, in reality market mechanisms do not work to the advantage of African Americans. Nor does public regulation of land use operate in their interest, although public policy is presumed to produce equitable and favorable outcomes for all members of society. This book explores how a combination of government regulation of land use and free market forces have created the locking effect, which has cultivated and sustained a process of disenfranchisement of African Americans.

This is an intelligent, interesting read analyzing the practical and psychological situations which lead to the riots in LA during the early 90s.
The author uses a variety of theories and metaphors, far beyond the confines of the field of business and finance. His introspection and analysis is thorough and direct; special notice should be given to chapter 10, which addresses head-on the question of compansation to the African American community.

Excellent Book!.......2003-01-25
This book was lent to me by my sister-in-law. Her mother suffered a couple of strokes, none as devastating as Shawn's. Once I picked up this book I couldn't put it down. Even though he is a doctor he doesn't talk in "doctor talk". He is down to earth, funny, and very honest. This book is great for the stroke surviver, caregiver or just the curious. A definite must read!
