    Book Description

Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE): Coastal Ecosystems analyzes quantitative and qualitative information and develops selected indicators of the condition of the world's coastal ecosystems and marine fisheries. Specifically the study looks at measures that show the degree of human modification of coastal zone and what we know concerning five important goods and services provided by coastal ecosystems: filtering water, food, biodiversity, shoreline stabilization, and tourism.

Results from the PAGE analysis show that human activities have extensively altered coastal ecosystems worldwide. Nearly 30 percent of the land area in the world's coastal ecosystems had already been extensively altered or destroyed by growing demand for housing, industry, and recreation. Globally, the number of people living within 100 km of the coast increased from roughly 2 billion in 1990 to 2.2 billion in 1995—four out of every ten people in the world. As coastal and inland populations continue to grow, their impacts—in terms of pollutant loads and the development and conversion of coastal habitats—can be expected to grow as well. Nutrient pollution has increased dramatically this century due to greater use of fertilizers, growth in quantities of domestic and industrial sewage, and increased aquaculture, which releases considerable amounts of waste directly into the water. Increasing fishing pressure have left many major fish stocks depleted or in decline. Global climate change may compound other pressures on coastal ecosystems through the additional effects of warmer ocean temperatures, altered ocean circulation patterns, changing storm frequency, and rising sea levels.

A critical step in improving the way we manage the earth's ecosystems is to take stock of their condition and their capacity to provide the goods and services we will need in years to come. The Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE) aims to address this gap. The PAGE compares existing and new information on a global scale about the condition of five major classes of ecosystems: agroecosystems, coastal areas, forests, freshwater systems, and grasslands.

The PAGE Freshwater Systems study presented here, analyzes quantitative and qualitative information and develops selected indicators of the condition of the world's freshwater systems. The condition is defined as the current and future capacity of the systems to continue providing the full range of goods and services needed or valued by humans. Specifically the study looks at measures that show the degree of human intervention in the hydrological cycle and what we know concerning three important goods and services provided by freshwater systems: water, food, and biodiversity. These goods and services were chosen partly on the advice of a wide range of freshwater experts and partly because of data availability.

Results from the PAGE analysis show that human activities have severely affected the condition of freshwater systems worldwide. Even though humans have increased the amount of water available for use with dams and reservoirs, more than 40 percent of the world's population lives in conditions of water stress. This percentage is estimated to grow to almost 50 percent by 2025 . Surface and groundwater is being degraded in almost all regions of the world by intensive agriculture and rapid urbanization, aggravating the water scarcity problem. In addition, lack of access to clean water continues to be a leading cause of illness and death in much of the developing world. Food production from wild fisheries has been affected by habitat degradation, overexploitation, and pollution to a point where most of these resources are not sustainable without fishery enhancements. Finally, the capacity of freshwater ecosystems to support biodiversity is highly degraded at a global level, with many freshwater species facing rapid population declines or extinction.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent trail book.......2007-10-09

This book covers only Grand Teton Nat'l Park, which is great beacuse most trail books throw GTNP in with Yellowstone trail books and those never seem to give the attention GTNP deserves. I have vacationed and hiked GTNP several times over the past ten years and purchased more than a few of these books looking for details on the longer hikes while being mindful of the abilities of my children (pre-teen and early teen). This book allows you to plan for both. The author provides elevation profiles for each hike as well as the usual distance and difficulty rating. Like most people, the ratings are always a bit hard to match with one's ability and stamina. The elevation profiles give you a real sense of what you're in for! In addition, each hike is described to you in detail: what you experience, what you'll see, what to watch for, how much time the hike will take, and offer some options for shorter or longer combined hikes. Excellent! If I had to recommend only one of the dozen or so that I have read about GTNP, this would definitely be the one!

5 out of 5 stars Best all-around guide for hiking the Tetons.......2004-10-27

This guide lists 35 trails, organized by region. Unlike (say) the Yellowstone guide it does not sort the trails into short, medium, and long hikes. Like other Falcon guides, it provides maps of each trail and valuable information about elevations and steepness. Each listing include elevation diagrams that are very useful for letting you know what you are getting yourself into.

This is probably the best all-around guide to hiking the Grand Tetons. It's especially useful for finding good hikes while sitting at home. Bill Schneider writes well and does a good job describing the hikes so that you can decide which ones are best for you. Like other Falcon guides it has a chart listing best flat terrain day hike, best wildlife viewing, most strenuous, best scenery, and so on.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good overview of the Teons.......2004-09-07

This book gives a pretty good summary of the hiking trails in Grand Teton National Park. My one complaint would be regarding the trail for Granite Canyon/Rendevous mountains (Chapter 3). The elevation map showed the trail being flat at the end. You actually ascend a bit at the end. I wish I had known that before because I was pretty tired at the end. Other than that, I found the book accurate, and a a great guide to hiking in the area.

4 out of 5 stars Hiking Grand Teton National Park.......2002-07-14

Having read this book and just spent a week using it in hiking in the Tetons, I found it generally useful and accurate. The maps and directions for finding trailheads are good, and the mileage counter provided gives a good indication of progress on the walks. I would make several recommendations for changes, however. First, I disagree with the level of difficulty ranking for some of the trails. For instance, the Amphitheater Lake trail is clearly more strenuous and difficult than the Holly Lake trail. Second, there should be numerical figure giving the actual elevation gain in addition to the useful elevation profile graph. Finally, the book did not include the excellent Hanging Canyon trail, which though unmaintained, is still a great climb. I found the book Day Hiking Grand Teton National Park by Tom Carter to be equally useful and much more packable based on its small size.

As a seasoned hiker, I purchased this book looking for a few great day hikes. There are only 9 hikes in this book and none of them really qualify as hikes, more like long walks with no gain in elevation. I paid $10 and really felt like I wasted $10.

2 out of 5 stars Dilettante hikers-this is your book!.......2000-06-27

This book is fine for beginner climbers who want to hike the easiest and best known trails in the area.

Stone gives a brief (maybe too brief) description of over 40 hikes and good directions on how to get to each trailhead.

For those of you looking for longer, less well known, and more challenging hikes, I would recommend Hiking Grand Teton National Park by Bill Schneider. This book lists more hikes (easy, moderate, and hard) and gives more complete descriptions on what to expect on each hike.

              Book Description

The New York Times Almanac 2006 is the almanac of record. Drawing on the resources of the worldÂ's premier news organization, it provides readers with a wealth of data about the United States and the world—in a readable and more easily accessible form than other fact finders. Unrivaled in scope and unsurpassed in comprehensiveness, The New York Times Almanac is the first choice for students, journalists, and researchers—for anyone who needs timely, accurate information about the world we live in.

The New York Times Almanac 2006 includes:
              • Comprehensive coverage of every nation in the world as well as environmental and economic issues
              • The most complete sports section of any almanac
              • More information than any other almanac about global terrorism, the Internet, epidemics, world population, and much more

5 out of 5 stars Extensive almanac, great price.......2006-03-26

Can't beat the price for this very complete almanac. Over 1000 pages of interesting world facts. Everything from world news (for 2005), world history, geography, Academy Awards, science, business, as well as complete lists of sporting event winners (Olympics, football, baseball, etc. like Michael J. Fox used in "Back to the Future"), and much much more.
Although probably everything in this book can be found on the Internet, it's actually handier for me to use this book to find information.
If you've never had a good world almanac book before, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the shear volume of information in this one.

Capt. Ray is great at easing your fears of flying. He used to post on a message board for fear of flying a while back and was awesome there as well. Well done book, a must for anyone who is afraid to fly or is an anxious flyer.

I found this book answered questions for me. It has assisted me in flying comfortably. It amazed me how much understanding the details of a flight put me at ease. Thanks Capt.Ray

I've spent the last several years flying because I have to, but dreading each and every minute of it. Every year my fear of being in a plane has gotten worse and worse. When my job changed and I found myself on planes almost every week instead of once or twice a year, I knew I had to do something about it. And I found Ray's book.

Ray teaches you everything you could want to know about flight. As a frightened passenger, its helpful to know that specific noises are normal and regular. And if something isn't normal and regular, its helpful to know what other things a pilot has in his or her arsenal to keep you safe. Most fearful flyers are dealing with that complete loss of control and Ray does an amazing job at giving people back their sense of control and their sense of safety in flight.

Since reading Ray's book I have been all over the place on planes, though I would have been even without this book. The difference now is that I can get up and walk around. I can be like any other passenger on the plane, enjoying the movie, talking to the people around me, and not gripping the arm rest and thinking we are about to crash. And what's better, I can look out the window when I fly now. Ray, you are right, it really is beautiful down there.

So Captain Stark, thank you for giving me the freedom of the skies. And for any other fearful flyer out there, give Ray's book a try. It will be the best investment you have made in getting through your fear.

                  Book Description

While admittedly somewhat limited (about the width and height of an aircraft windscreen) and woefully short of the "big picture", the pilot's perspective offers some unique insights into the vagaries of life. Those insights are presented in This Is Your Captain Speaking as a series of tales that, while amusing and lighthearted, give reason to pause and think.

Put your seatbacks into the full-upright and locked position, stow and lock your tray tables, and sit back and enjoy the ride.

My first comment is a sidenote: If you're a fearful flyer looking for some advice, skip this one. Appendix 1 is great, but this isn't the overall point of the book, and you're probably better off *not* reading some of the stories! Just FYI.

It's a book of southern storytelling with a point to make, and the captain does a great job here. Think "Aesop's Fables" for the 20th century, told by a veteran flyer. He's done a lot with his life, and the stories are all indicative of this breadth of experience.

My biggest gripe were some of the comments regarding religion and society, where the captain feels strongly. Fortunately, these aren't often enough to be distracting, but if you're not a Christian/Catholic reader you'll find the last chapter at least condescending, and at most offensive.

Would I purchase the book again if I had the choice? Probably not. It just wasn't my style of humour. More chuckles and incredulity at the experiences. Your time is better spent on Chuck Yeager's biography.

You don't have to be a 747 driver to enjoy this book. I can recommend it to everybody who wants to read a good, funny story or is curios why most pilots have a different outlook on life. I laughed my rear off reading his tales and I really enjoyed how Captain Ed looks at our modern and ever-changing environment (some aviation but life in general) from a fun but clever perspective. It's truly a "feel good" book that also gets you thinking at times. You might call him a modern day, easy to read, and funny Saint Exupery. He has inspired me to write some of my own stories down. Thanks Captain Ed!

It's obvious that not only can Captain Ed Owens fly an airplane, but he can successfully spin an incredible tale! This is Your Captain Speaking is southern-style storytelling at its finest combined with fable undertones. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the captain's light-hearted stories but I also appreciated his aviation-referenced approach to keeping life simple. I take back everything I've ever said about pilots!

                  5 out of 5 stars A non-pilot, but aviation lover speaks.......2005-02-24

Ed Owen has given some unique perspective to the relationship of flying and living. He has strung together a wonderful collection of stories about himself, his friends and the characters he has come across in his flying. Most of the stories are downright hilarious, but some are very thought-provoking and some very serious. I suspect the pilot-reader will find some perspectives that really resonate in life-experiences, but anyone who has ever wondered whether pilots at the top of their skills are "real people", will find the insights, situations and characters delightful and informative. I highly recommend the book for all.

                        Book Description

"This Is Your Captain Speaking." Millions of American aiplane passengers hear those words every day, but very few get too know the person behind the voice. Captain F. Lloyd Staats is one of those people behind the voice, and in this fastinating and enthralling autobiography, aptly entitled "This Is Your Captain Speaking: Fifty Years of Keeping The Blue Side Up, readers get to know him very well. When Lloyd Staats decided to pursue a flying career, aviation was still a pioneer industry. Staats grew and developed as a pilot at the same time as passenger air travel itself grew and developed. He spent nearly thirty-five years with American Airlines, from their early beginnings to their emergence as the biggest and the best airline in the country. And he pulls no punches in recounting his experiences---both good and bad---with the company and its politics. There are humorous anecdotes, exciting and tense moments, and several dramatic confrontations with the powers-that-be who run the skies.. Through it all Captain Staats remains refreshingly honest and entertaining. When this Captain speaks you will really want to listen.
