Your First Sailboat : How to Find and Sail the Right Boat for You
ASIN: 0070442487 |
Book Description
Mustin's part-by-part look at hull, deck, rig, and machinery is both a minicourse for transforming used-boat shopping from a game of craps to a science, and the first step in a holistic boat maintenance program. His discussion of the significance of cracks found in aging hulls and decks is the most thorough in print. He is not shy in assessing the lack of regulation of professional surveyors, nor does he shrink from pointing a finger at shoddy building practices.
Having a used boat surveyed is a critical prelude to buying it. Yet a professional survey is expensive--several hundred dollars. Surveying Fiberglass Sailboats will enable you to conduct your own surveys while narrowing the field, then monitor a professional surveyor's performance when selecting your target boat.
Customer Reviews:
Must have Book for those looking to buy a boat.......2000-08-04
Read this book and you can evaluate boats and surveyors. This in turn will make you feel more comfortable when you hire a surveyor to meet an insurance requirement or to evaluate things you don't feel competent to do yourself.
This book does a great job explaining how glass is laid up, the different types of glass, mat, roving, etc, and where they should be used. Common problems found in fiberglass boats such as blistering are discussed with lots of surprising information.
I've found that my personal experiences confirmed many of the points made by the author. Like the myth that fresh water boats are better than salt water. Contrasted with fresh water boats are more likely to have blister problems than saltwater.
Today, many people come to me with questions about boats. As I write this review, I realize that many of the answers I give out come out of information I found in this book.
I don't believe you have to have a survey on a boat to make an intelligent purchase decision. In part, because some of the surveyors are only interested in your money, and do not look boats over thoroughly. A properly educated individual can do most or all of his, or her, own survey.
Some surveyors are very good, and some are very bad. How can you tell if someone is good or not?
To become a surveyor some certifying organizations only require a couple of sample copies of surveys done and that you have a few books on your bookshelf. What a joke!
I personally know of a real case, which happened in 1999, where an old survey was pulled up, the date changed and it was reused without any a new survey being actually done. This is a good reason to choose your own surveyor and not the one recommended by the seller.
Going aloft and checking the rigging on a boat is not easy. Is it not surprising that important steps like these get skipped.
Some surveyor's haven't read this book--so how good can they be? Contrast this with someone who has taken a 8 week course on surveying, holds a USCG license, and grew up on boats. This is the kind of person you want for a surveyor.
It is up to you to be knowledgeable enough to make your own decisions-including choosing a surveyor if you feel you need one. This book will help you do that.
Educate yourself. Being able to look a boat over to evaluate it for purchase is an important skill. This book is a good starting point. It is cheap insurance and worth the price.
Do it yourself or learning the ropes.......2000-05-10
I used this and another, more detailed book, to complete my own survey on an inexpensive boat with a measure of confidence. I felt that I could gauge the safety and useability of all the major systems of the boat within reason..is it safe, does it work properly, etc.
I didn't always understand the why behind some analyses, but the average person can easily use the book to a) perform a basic survey on an inexpensive boat, or b) winnow the acceptable from the unaccptable before paying a professional to complete a thorough survey.
I feel prepared.......2000-01-26
Henry does it in one 3 1/2 hour setting - completely. I now feel confident in my search for 'Das Boot'. I drove a 27 foot Tartan for years, decided it was time for a 40 and didn't know how to proceed in my next move. Now I do. Well written, factual and even mentions, not-unfavorably, some names. I do not believe you could go wrong with this purchase, if, you are on the same quest as I. Retirement, with dive charters in the Caribbe... Buenas Suertes, y'all.
BASIC FIBERGLASS BOAT SURVEYING.......2000-01-05
Mr. Mustin explains fiberglass boat construction in very detailed laymans terms. His real world experience dealing with the problems of fiberglass boats and his discuss of what is a real problem and what is something you can live with/expect was informative. The last chapters on the trade of surveying boats for a living were excellent.
Essential Information.......1999-03-29
Mustin gives a lot of good information in doing your own survey for that boat you have your eye on. I would never recommend not having a professional survey, but this book guides you through a lot of information with good pictures and sketches. Read this book before you go boat searching to eliminate the dogs. Then use this book to hire a really good surveyor and be able to talk intelligently to him. Good luck. Would I buy again. Yes

Excellent NREMT exam prep.......2007-09-15
This is an excellent review for the NREMT exam for EMT-B certification. It is well organized, helps you pinpoint areas where you need to study more, and is written very much like the actual test.
The questions in these practice tests are much more difficult than those found in online practice tests, which tend to be over-simplified. Just as important, this book is from an authoritative source; I found some answers in the online sources which were just plain wrong.
The NREMT exam is as much about test-taking ability as it is about subject matter knowledge, and that's where this book really helps. In particular, there are many questions on the actual exam where the choices contain information which looks very simple at first glance, but which in fact contains very subtle differences. The questions in this book give you those types of choices, and train you to read each question carefully looking for those nuances which are the difference between a right answer and a wrong answer.
Your first time through the questions in this book may be a wake-up call if you don't really know your stuff. But it's better to get a wake-up call before the test, rather than during the test. I passed on the first try. Good luck!
Great Review Manual.......2006-05-09
This book outlines the areas of EMT testing at both State and National Level. It's a sure way to review all the areas that will be covered on the exams. I highly recommend it for anyone just out of school or preparing for certification.

Good characterization, poor plotting.......2006-05-15
Claire Coulter's brother is dying. To Claire's astonishment, her boss offers to pay for the risky operation that might save him. The catch? Claire must accompany Tobias Benton on a search for the Fountain of Youth.
My mom bought this book for me because it had two of my favorite things - tarot and horses - and so of course, I must read this story. I found Claire and Jack to be vivid, well-drawn characters who drew the reader into their emotional tale. In fact, if you ignored the tarot deck, the fact that Set now walks the Earth, her sleazy boss' attempts to get her in bed, a brother who is dying of kidney failure, and all the other sub-plots that detract from the true story of Claire and Jack's discovery of their love, then this is an awesome read.
I loved these characters, though at times they are placed in unbelievable circumstances, and read through the book to see how they would turn out. It seemed to me that there were too many subplots and too much happening, and the paranormal elements are not grounded with firm explanations, which leaves the book reading kind of like an episode of the Twilight Zone.
To me, the paranormal elements felt superfluous. Had Tobias been going to visit Jack's ranch to buy a race horse and asked Claire to accompany him, then the story could have just as well worked as a steamy contemporary, and would have read all the better for having the paranormal elements removed. As someone who is a tarot lover, a horse lover, and very knowledgeable about both, I found all the extra elements (including a horse that's supposed to win the Kentucky Derby, though the horse read more as a 5 or 6 year old, which meant he was too old to run in the Derby), really pulled me out of the story.
If you read this book - do it for the characters, because Jack and Claire need to have their story told. It's just too bad that this venue didn't work for them.
Dark Horse.......2005-12-26
To gain her employer, Tobias Benton's, help in legalizing herself and her brother as well as having the dying young man's exhorbitant medical bills paid, Claire Coulter agrees to help Tobias find the Fountain of Youth. Her ability to decipher the codes that could lead them there is invaluable, and Tobias also has a few less noble designs on Claire that will ultimately put her in peril. From the outset, the quest lies under a cloud of doom; Claire is in possession of a cursed Tarot deck that has already killed someone dear to her. Between that and Tobias being insane, Claire is walking headlong into danger, but someone walks beside her, keeping her safe. Jack is a troubled man with a tormented past and who has a horse spirit living inside him that gives him unusual abilities. His gifts and Claire's may not be enough to stop Tobias and his evil mentor from using Claire to pay a blood price for their treasure. Yet, they do have love on their side.
Much goes on in this book. Some threads are picked up and alluded to that remain undeveloped, and if they had been explored further would have made this an even better read. The paranormal element is utilized in an almost Indiana Jones fashion, simply tacked onto a basic adventure story. I also would have enjoyed going further into the idea of Egyptians living in ancient North America, but that is only background material. On the plus side, Tobias is a deplorable villain, one who is very easy to loathe, and Claire manages to be a damsel in distress who is capable, but simply needs a bit of help against overwhelming odds. Furthermore, if you have missed the first book in the Forbidden Tarot series, you don't need to have read it to follow this one.

3.5 stars........2005-11-07
Tobias Benton, head of CommOptima, and one of his associates is searching for the legendary Fountain of Youth. Tobias believes he finally has its location. It is in an archeological site in the Sierra Nevada, deep within a cave. The place is booby-trapped. Written upon the door leading to the Fountain is an ancient Nimian code. Tobias needs a translator, but no one in the world has broken the code. However, he knows the one who could do it.
Claire Coulter has worked for Tobias a couple of years now. She works on the Nimian Project and has spent the last two years working on cracking its code. Claire never met Tobias before he called her into his office and offers her a deal. She would accompany Tobias to the site and translate the door for him. It would take about three days of horseback riding to reach it. Once done, Tobias would not only get her a Green Card, but would pay for her brother to get the kidney transplant he so desperately needs.
Jack Hughes owns Dark Horse Ranch. The place is in dire need of funds, so he agrees to take Tobias and Claire where they need to go. But that did not mean he would like it. Jack had a magical experience at that site when he was thirteen-years-old. It was not something he cared to repeat, so he had never returned. He has no doubt that this little expedition is a bad idea.
Humans are not the only ones in need of the Fountain. Set, one of the Ancients, needs it as well. The humans are simply a tool to reach it...and so expendable.
**** Even though this is a "stand alone" book, references to a previous novel are made. Often Claire would call a lady that must have been a main character of the previous book. These scenes did not strike me as necessary, however, they did seem to lend a dark essence to the story. Each chapter begins with a paragraph that reads like a journal entry by Set. VERY nice touch! Not only did this give me more insight into Set, but it also made the possibility of Set being real more believable to me. ****

terrific paranormal romantic suspense thriller .......2005-11-02
CommOptima CEO Tobias Benton believes he has located the legendary Fountain of Youth inside a cave in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. On the outside "door" is letters written in ancient Nimian. Tobias knows the person capable of breaking the code to allow entry; he assumes forced access will prove dangerous as he expects booby traps everywhere.
Tobias sends for employee Claire Coulter offering her a deal she cannot refuse. She will go to the site and translate the Nimian runes for him in exchange for her brother obtaining the kidney transplant he desperately needs to live.
Needing money to keep his ranch Dark Horse Ranch owner Jack Hughes reluctantly agrees to escort Tobias and Claire to the cave, a three day ride by horseback though he hates going near there, having suffered a paranormal experience there as a teen. At the same time Set, an Ancient One, seeks the healing powers of the Fountain too and plans to use the human pawns to help him attain his objective; afterward he will dispatch these worthless creatures.
This terrific paranormal romantic suspense thriller has some tenuous ties to the previous Forbidden Tarot tale, THE DARK LORD, but clearly can be perused without reading the first tale. Claire is a wonderful protagonist willing to sacrifice everything including ethics and love to save her sibling's life; she adds a deep moral dilemma/fiber to the tale. Jack is also interesting as he denies love while Tobias is fixated on finding the Fountain of Youth. However, the most fascinating character remains Set, whose appearances are somewhat limited yet tells quite a back tale involving the Golden Ones and much more.

Paranormal Page Turner!.......2005-11-02
Take one hunky race horse breeder with a paranormal secret, a hot Latina with life and death issues of her own, throw them together with a sleazy billionaire and an ancient evil that's walking about on two feet and you have one killer book! Plus, I just love the hero. There's something about a boy who could be bad, but won't . . .

Customer Reviews:
Very cute, but also quite functional.......2007-07-12
The first thing that drew me into this set is the artwork. Bright colors, beautifully painted, with whimsical images of witches, both "good" and "bad". Unfortunately I couldn't find any notation of who are artist was. Still, the artwork is a lovely illustration of the text.
This set is...well...it's best summed up as "cute". There's a very playful air to the way Kemp writes about her good and bad witches, 26 of each. The Good Witches include the Stardust Witch, who "makes dreams come true" (22), the Fire Witch who "makes temperatures rise" (32) and the South Witch, who "predicts a happy phase when the sun will shine for you" (36). The Bad Witches, on the other hand, features such characters as the Warty Witch, who "speaks to you in a vein of honesty, `warts and all'" (46), the Wickedest Witch who "reveals that jealousy may create havoc" (49) and the Venomous Witch who is "as poisonous as an adder's fang" (55). The various roles of each of the witches in this divinatory pack deal primarily with everyday concerns such as love and good living. Along with descriptions of the "personality" of each witch, the general attributes and forecasts that each card suggests are explained. Each entry is completed with a brief spell that fits the theme of the card that comes up.
Some may look askance at some of the spells; for example, there are several that are dedicated to ruining someone else's relationship or getting revenge on others. These hearken back to historical witchcraft, in which the spells for love and healing were joined by the equally common spells for revenge and sickness-in modern practices of witchcraft (particularly Wicca) the latter aren't spoken of as much in an attempt to improve P.R. for paganism as a whole. While most witches choose not to implement such spells, the fact that they exist shouldn't be denied. It all comes down to personal ethics.
I think my only complaint is that it is pretty lightweight. The descriptions are quite brief, and I would have enjoyed reading about how Kemp actually created the deck-a story is always a nice addition. Still, for being a little gift-box divination set, it's pretty darned good.
For all its cute factor, this is a very usable deck. Kemp did a great job of designing some sample layouts to be used with this deck, and they serve a very functional purpose. If you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary that keeps even the "bad" witches light-hearted, this is a fun deck to work-or play-with.
What a wonderful and inspiring deck...............2006-10-17
I really do love this little deck. I have the other decks created by Kemp (tree Magick/Faerie Wisdom) and since I was so charmed by them I had to pick up this one also.
It seems each deck she puts out....the cards are a different size and shape, and this witch deck is no exception. They are about the size of playing cards, on good card stock. 52 cards in all....26 good witch/26 bad witch. Though the bad witches aren't really bad, just more the darker or perhaps less mature sides of ourselves and situations.
The artwork is so entrancing! It's a naive kind of storybook art, I just love this artist (emma Garner), she does the other cards in Kemp's set also. It really opens up the senses and your intution. I have got some accurate and amazing readings with these so far, I plan on working with them for quite awhile and really getting in tune with their energies and depth. Some may think or say that these cards can't be for deeper or more complex readings, but I disagree. The depth is there. Almost every witch card has a host of other meanings not in the description. Say the East, West, North, South witch cards. The symbolism and meanings of just those directions are immense.
I gave it 4 stars because unlike her other 2 decks the descriptions and meanings given for each card are lacking, some don't give good meanings at all...most have great ones...just some are lacking. In her other decks the descriptions are more profound and give you a better jumping off point for your intuition. Of course this was her first deck though.
Still though I highly recommend these cards, the artwork, imagery and power of these little cards are undeniable. My favourite at the moment are the Ditch Witch, the Broomstick Witch, the West Witch,Forest Witch, the Green Witch and the Secret Witch (I really love that one!)
One of my favorites!.......2004-08-02
This is not a tarot deck but is an oracle deck. It can be used for multi-card spreads, as laid out in the book, but I find it works best pulling a single card at a time. Each card has an image of a different type of witch and I love every one. The artwork is whimsical, colorful, and light hearted. Half the cards are supposedly Good and half are Bad but none are truely scary or creepy. For example there's a Green Witch and Brown Witch, witches for each wind direction and for each element. There's a Wedding Witch, Bat Witch, Grant Three Wishes Witch, Hedge Witch. I'd love to go on because even the names are great. Every one is creative and fun. Whenever I look through the deck, my mood is instantly lifted. Obviously, this isn't what I'd use for very complex, serious readings. But it's great for something like picking a card a day.
The deck comes in a nice sized box you can keep both the deck and book in. The cards are small - about 2" x 3", which I find fits perfectly with the feeling of the deck in general. The accompanying book is in full color, and while also small it is much more detailed than the usual Little White Booklet that comes with other decks. There's a section on ways to use the cards and readings. Then there's a page for each card giving a meaning and also a spell that can go with it. My only issue is that some of the meanings don't seem to have anything to do with the image on the card. The spells are more like folkcharms - I personally ignore them. Actually, I might only glance at the meanings in the book just to get another viewpoint on a reading, but mostly I just use intuition. If you are comfortable using cards in that manner, these are highly recommended!
A Beginner: Least I'm honest.......2003-07-08
I find this book to be very elaborate about what its means are. Gives an easy approach to reading tarot and especially for one who thinks they cannot do it; this book will help. I thought I really couldn't do any sort of tarot until I bought this book. The cards are amazing; I love the little pictures it has. And the spells in which carries with each card that helps you in your everyday situations. So I love this book I still have it and I think it's an awesome tool for a beginner.

Customer Reviews:
Laura is showing you threw life!.......2001-04-02
This is the most fantastic, exciting book that I ever read. It has everything a reader wants in a book, action, romance and suspense. Laura wants to get into a casino so badly that she takes gigantic steps to succeed. She steals the I.D of her 21 years old sister, steals her dead mother's clothes, makeup and jewelry. Laura went threw all of this trouble just to get into a casino. After weeks of gambling she gets caught up in love problems. At first she likes her best friends brother, but after being in the casino so often, she meets and falls madly in love with a man called Ari. This book shows the side of life of a young adult wanting to do adult stuff. Life is difficult and full of choices. You can chose to grow up, get a job, get married and do adult stuff, or never grow up and never to adult stuff. Who get some of these experiences with the journey of Laura. I rate this book as high as it goes, and I think every girl and boy should read the book The Dark Card!
An exciting "sitting on the edge of your seat" book.......1999-06-14
This book along with many that I have read was probalbly the best. The enchanting story of a seventeen year old girl who becomes obsessed with gambling and tries to cope with the fact that her mother no longer exists, tells and shows more more than one could imagion about any seventeen year olds semi-charmed life. It is exciting to read and is a real page turner. I never put the book down.
Sad Little Laura Immortalized In An Excellent Novel!.......1998-08-24
This is an excellent book that highly expresses the feelings of a young girl my age who is depressed of the lose of her beloved mother. The best part is when Laura steal's Heather's ID to get into the casinos of Atlantic City, and after reading this book, I became so interested and fascinated by Atlantic City that I had to go there. I confess that I truly loved Atlantic City when I went there for the first time, and it was interesting seeing all the people gamble at the tables and the slots. And I thought to myself, "God, I can't wait until I'm twenty-one!" Also, my parents promised to take me there! What a great book! I would highly recommend this book! Laura is a character who you would definately want to read about and never want to forget!
