Book Description
Paradise Lost is one of the greatest epic poems in the English language. It tells the story of the Fall of Man, a tale of immense drama and excitement, of rebellion and treachery, of innocence pitted against corruption, in which God and Satan fight a bitter battle for control of mankind's destiny. The struggle ranges across three worlds - heaven, hell, and earth - as Satan and his band of rebel angels plot their revenge against God. At the centre of the conflict are Adam and Eve, motivated by all too human temptations, but whose ultimate downfall is unyielding love. Milton's influence has been felt by many writers since, none more so in recent times than the novelist Philip Pullman. His acclaimed trilogy His Dark Materials takes its title from a line in the poem, and the worlds he created for Lyra and Will have entranced readers across generations. His introduction to the poem is a tribute that is both personal and full of insight; his enthusiasm for Milton's language, skill, and supreme gifts as a storyteller is infectious and instructive. He encourages readers above all to experience the poem for themselves, and surrender to its enchantment.

Very Nice Edition of Paradise Lost.......2007-10-04
Of course Milton's poem greatness one of greatest ten classics of English Literature. This edition is wonderfully easy to read with good paper, margins, typeface. This is not collectors quality but it will serve to be my libraries copy of Paradise Lost.
Loved the essay by Pullman.
A Daring, Outstanding piece of Liturature.......2007-08-14
Paradise Lost is John Milton's epic poem about the fall of Lucifer and Adam and Eve's banishment from the Garden of Eden. The audacity of Milton opening the poem with declareing that he's going to pursue things unattempted in prose or rhyme and to justify the ways of God to men is enough to get people reading to ifinity. The succsesfull attempt to tell the orgin of Hell and the story of Adam and Eve outside of the bible is a daring mission Milton puts himself through but comes out joyusly triumphant. This poem is such a significant moment in literature that it has become mentioned in various History Channel documentaries and has been put in many prestige formats.

A misreading........2007-07-17
By making the embodiment of evil heroic Paradise Lost undermines our concept of the heroic. The poem does not represent evil as heroic. It represents the traditional virtues of the heroic as evil. Pullman has misread this completely and has framed the poem within this misreading.... "better to reign in hell than serve in heaven" is a fine line, noble, staunch, heroic, but it is also a lie as to the minions who hear it it collapses into "better to serve in hell than serve in heaven," which is facile.
Pullman's trilogy is very well written, but is, in part, a fleshed out misreading of Paradise Lost. That is fine, and I enjoyed reading it. But it is irritating when Pullman presents Milton as some kind of ally in this misreading, which Pullman does with this edition of Paradise Lost, and which Milton is not.
Great Edition!.......2007-01-12
This is "the" Paradise Lost to own... If you are new to Milton, Pullman's comments will guide you along.
What a beautiful edition. Classic illustrations; perfect fonts; Satan himself could never produce such a great volume.
Paradise Lost.......2006-04-11
Pullman has no understanding of Milton, actually he can do nothing but project his views on to Milton and Paridise Lost. This does neither he or Milton any good. I think if you want to read Milton then one should read Milton, I really think that after all these years he can stand on his own. But if you are impressed by the cover and the looks of a book, then this shallow self adualtion will do.

Great Joyce Notes.......2006-02-28
This book provides excellent and clear references to otherwise obscure persons, locales, Irish slang, and turn-of-the-century (19th to 20th) Dublin culture that are so integral to the Joyce stories. Well worth the purchase.
Book Description
This casebook offers a comprehensive introduction to this landmark in modern fiction. The essays collected here will help first-time readers, teachers, and advanced scholars gain new insight into Joyce's semi-autobiographical story of an Irish boy's slow and difficult discovery of his artistic vocation. Mark Wollaeger's introduction provides an overview of the composition and early reception of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as well as a survey of some of the recurrent issues debated by literary critics. Essays by Hugh Kenner and Patrick Parrinder offer both indispensable overviews of the entire novel-its themes, structure, and idiom-and close attention to specific interpretive cruxes. Other essays include classic responses by Wayne Booth, Fritz Senn, Michael Levenson, Helene Cixous, and a newly revised and expanded version of Maud Ellmann's groundbreaking "Polytropic Man." Together the essays bring into focus the wide range of questions that have kept A Portrait fresh for the new millennium.
Customer Reviews:
Casebook was a good guide.......2006-03-09
The casebook on Portrait was very helpful to me. I had to use if for a project in my English class and it was nice to have such a wide variety of criticisms in one place. I also liked that each cricicism was labeled so I didn't have to scan through it to know what it focused on.
A good guide.......2003-11-13
James Joyce's A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN is arguably one of the defining works of 20th century modernism. It set the standard that many writers who employed stream of consciousness narration (Woolf, Faulkner, et al.) would follow. This collection of essays is a good way to familiarize yourself, not only with the novel, but with the Joycean scholarship that followed. Some essays are better than others: Ellman's stands out as particularly good. Some essays drag. Still, I would recommend this to anyone embarking on "A Portrait".

Major Milton Reference Released. A Must-Have Resource!.......2004-08-05
Major Milton Reference Released.
Paradise Lost, 1668-1968: Three Centuries of Commentary edited by Earl Roy Miner, co-edited by William Moeck, Steven Edward Jablonski (Bucknell University Press, Associated University Presses) This creative resource compiles and checks the best of previous commentarial scholarship on Paradise Lost. Over 15 years in the making, this volume should become the preferred companion for a close reading of the poem.
This Commentary, the first book-length work of this kind on Paradise Lost since the Richardsons' in 1734, combines resources in lieu of a true variorum edition no longer possible. It includes the best commentary from "Annotations" like Patrick Hume's (1695), the first full-length commentary on any English author, as well as annotations to the variorum editions of Newton (1749) and Todd (1801-42) and the modern professional editions culminating in Alastair Fowler's (1968).
Other elements combined in this Commentary include an essay on the pre-annotative criticism from 1668, including that by Marvell, Dryden, and Dennis; copious use of the OED; numerous cross-references to Milton's other works and passages in Paradise Lost; fourteen excurses and other contributions by the present editors.
This Commentary uniquely presents biblical, classical, and vernacular citations in which every cited passage is quoted, and every quotation is in English. It is itself a research library for Paradise Lost, and only a text of the poem is required.
The Editor, Earl Miner, was Townsend Martin, Class of 1917, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Princeton University. A scholar of inestimable breadth and quality, he distinguished himself in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century studies, in poetics, translation, and the Classical traditions in English literature, as well as in Japanese literature and comparative literature. After devoting fifteen years to this Commentary, he was preparing a study of inter-cultural poetics at his death in April 2004.
The Co-Editor, William Moeck, holds a Ph.D. from the City University of New York and teaches at Nassau Community College. After a dissertation on Milton and Spenser and this Commentary, he is proceeding to an interdisciplinary study of the relation between allegory and irony.
The Corresponding Editor, Steven Jablonski, received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. His essays on Milton have appeared in SEL,
Spokesperson Milton, and Arenas of Conflict. He is currently a librarian at the Skokie Public Library.

Book Description
While researching his excellent earlier book: Veterans of World War I, author Richard Van Emden encountered a fascinating personality of that long-ago conflict. After witnessing German naval attacks on British civilians, Norman Collins enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders of the 51st Highland Division, even though he was under age. Collins fought at the battles of Beaumont Hamel, Arras, and Passchendaele, and was wounded several times.
Collins lived to be 100 and had an unusually detailed collection of letters, documents, illustrations and photographs. Richard Van Emden has written a moving biography of a unique personality at war, and his long life after the dramatic events of his youth.

Book Description
Building a model from a kit is an excellent way to develop your modeling skills. But once you've mastered the basics, where do you go? If you're looking for a challenge, you move on to scratchbuilding. And that can be imposing: With a kit, you worked with someone else's plans, materials, and building instructions. Scratchbuilding makes you master of your own fate. You do the research, choose the subject, the scale, the material. The choices are limited only by your enthusiasm.
Edwin B. Leaf scratchbuilt his first model--a Baltimore clipper--nearly fifty years ago, and he's been refining and building on his skills ever since. In Ship Modeling from Scratch he lays out the principles--from concept to construction to display--on which scratchbuilding is based. In clear, concise language complemented by detailed illustrations he tells how to interpret existing drawings or create your own, what materials to choose, what tools to buy, and what techniques to use to build everything from plank-on-frame, plank-on-bulkhead, or modern steel hulls to creating sharp and properly scaled details--paint to portholes.
Building a model from scratch is a singular pursuit that requires patience, confidence, and ingenuity. With Ship Modeling from Scratch open on your workbench, you have your own private tutor guiding you through the troublespots.

General overview of Ship Modeling.......2007-08-07
I find the book a good introduction to the concepts, but a bit lite in detail.
A necessary book for the model ship builder.......2006-03-24
I purchased this book several years past. This Amazon.com reviewer is an avid ship modeler. I use this book nearly constantly. I give this book five stars.
Now, this book was written in 1993. So, there are no web sites for reference nor is there a more recent write up. If a person is interested in making a scratch built ship they should surf onto the steelnavy.com web site. Steel Navy is known as one of the best web references for ship building. Museum quality ships from the world have pictures on that page. If you want American warship plans then surf to "Maryland Silver". They have nearly all of the ship plans of the modern Navy. Furthermore, they have plans for most of the pre-1880 (modern Navy) ships. Last, a fair source of ship plans is Ebay. One vendor on Ebay sells quite warships and Great Lakes vessels. If you are making a modern ship and need fittings the web sites to check out are H&R Products, Blue Jacket Ship Models, and The Scale Shipyard. All three web locations have lots of fittings for ships.
Now, back to this book.
This book covers all necessary steps for a ship modeler. The first chapter is on getting correct plans. If your plans are off then what is the point? The second chapter covers making the keel, ribs (frames), and then planking the ship. The rest of the chapters follow in logical progression. The chapters vary from rigging your model if you have a sailing ship to building a superstructure for a modern ship. Note, there are two complete sets of plans in the back of the book. One for a sailing ship and another for a simple cargo steamer. I didn't build either because this modeler makes battleships.
Speaking of battleships, the book gives quite a bit of information on constructing a South Carolina class battleship. The South Carolina class is semi-famous in model circles. The first ship of the class, BB-27, the USS Michigan, has extensive model construction articles written about it in this book. Now, the chapter on Cage Mast Construction is about the only major book that has been published that covers this topic. Cage Masts were found on every battleship made in the USA from about 1910 to 1920. Cage Masts are seen on many of the battleships, like the USS Tennessee, at Pearl Harbor. So, it's very good that a major book tells how to make a cage mast. Note, the chapter on Cage Mast construction will advise a builder to make a jig for the mast. Furthermore, it's advisable that no cage mast be made that is smaller than 1/144th scale.
The book also gives advise on the cutting of wood, plastics, and metal. Furthermore, there is suggestions by the author on what type of wood cutting machines to buy, such as a table saw, and what sort of finishing tool to purchase. The hobby of ship modelling is a lot easier if you have a Demel tool.
The book had lots of little helpful items. It give basic instructions for making a deadeye. Port holes, very necessary for a making a convincing ship, are covered in this book. If you don't want to follow the advise you can get fair portholes from either H & R Products or Blue Jacket.
The only thing that isn't really covered in this book is making a boat radio controlled. You'll have to get another book if you wish to RC your beloved museum quality ship.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have. This book should be studies by any body who wishes to make their first scratch built model. Note, there are no large scale commercial models of Great Lakes steamers or Pre-WWII battleships. So, if you want to build a nice model battleship of the USS Florida you'll have to get the plans from Maryland Silver, the fitting from H & R Products, and read this book to learn the knowledge necessary for making that model.
Best wishes, fellow ship builder, on reading this book. You'll enjoy your purchase. I look forward to hearing about your question on steelnavy.com .
This book is worth all five stars.

What would you do if you were told you only had 24 hours before an asteroid obliterated the planet? The teens at Time Zone High are struggling with that very question (along with figuring out who's sleeping with whom and whether or not to attend physics class). Is the asteroid real? Is it a government cover-up or an Internet hoax? And by the way, what are the Laws of Virginity? Allegra "Legs" Hanover--usually prepared for anything--is thrown into a tailspin by this potential catastrophe. Only minimally less disorienting is the discovery that her "platonic boyfriend" Derman may have slept with her sexy friend Angie. But as Legs has always thought, "high school is potty training for life," so she tries to make important decisions in the face of disaster--such as whether or not she should make a play for rebellious surfer dude Andros Bliss, the strangely attractive "Totally Inappropriate Guy."
Todd Strasser, author of How I Changed My Life and Girl Gives Birth to Own Prom Date (both also set at Time Zone High), once again proves his mastery at funny, fast-paced, fascinating writing. Teens will love this wild ride, and will find themselves laughing in the face of the end of the world. (Ages 12 to 16) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
Something strange is happening in the parking lot of Time Zone High: The established cliques aren't in their usual gathering places. Instead, everyone has joined in one large, frantically interacting mass.
Why? Maybe it's because the world may end tomorrow.
For the attractive, brilliant Legs Hanover, this poses daunting questions:
What are the romantic possibilities, given she may only have twenty-four hours to live before a giant asteroid smashes into the earth?
Or is it all just an Internet cyberhoax?
Either way, it's time for Legs to meet the object of her daydreams -- the handsome, frequently truant Andros Bliss.
Because during the next twenty-four hours, everyone's life is bound to change.
Todd Strasser continues the Time Zone High saga with this hilarious, thought-provoking novel about emotional confusion on the brink of disaster.
Customer Reviews:
End of the World.......2007-04-24
Allegra, called Legs, spent most of her night studying for a Chinese test instead of talking on the phone or online with her friends. So when she arrives at school in the morning, she is shocked to see so many people looking upset or even crying. Then she finds out that everyone else knows that there may be a meteor heading toward the Earth, on course to destroy the world within twenty-four hours. The government is keeping quiet about things, of course, but most suspect that there is some sort of coverup and the situation is dire.
How will everyone spend today, assuming that it is, in fact, their last day on Earth? Legs spends the morning thinking carefully about things, especially the fact that she doesn't really have any strong feelings beyond friendship for her boyfriend Derman. Halfway through the day she stands up and leaves school, something she never would have dreamed of doing on any other day, and heads to the beach to find Andros Bliss.
Andros is the guy of Legs' fantasies, a rebellious surfer who rides a motorcycle. Legs has decided that she doesn't want to die without at least having a real conversation with him. When she does track him down, though, she is surprised by his personality. He is laid back and seems amused at her need to question everything, to explain everything and work it into a logical order in her mind. As she spends more of the day with him, she finds herself beginning to relax and feel more at ease. Will this day really be the last any of them experience? If it is not their last day of life, will Legs and Andros be able to continue to have a relationship?
I liked the way Legs narrated the story and the ways she tried to talk herself out of things or into things. I liked her ironic view of the world around her. I didn't like Derman or Angie, and I didn't like that they were both keeping secrets from Legs. I also thought Legs and Andros immediately getting along was too easy. People who lived in such vastly different worlds would probably have more trouble trying to form a relationship.
interesting and easy to follow.......2006-09-29
i usually dont like slow-moving stories but this book has interesting stories in between. it's like a data bank of useless and irrelivent information but thats what's crazy, i cant stop reading on and it really gets a person thinking. ill enjoy doing a book report on this!

Love it.......2006-04-25
I love this book it's the best book ever on this earth! I read it in one day because I couldn't put the book down it was just to good!
A cute tale with a hidden message.......2004-07-30
I picked this book up at my local library the other day and devoured it in a few hours. I was expecting nothing more than a typical teen romance story;dialogue that was either way too polysyllabic to possibly be entertaining (Dawson's Creek, anyone?)or so cheesy that it causes every young person to question just what weird species of teenager was the inspiration behind it. So, to cut to the chase...I wasn't expecting to be wowed like I was when I read the final page. The author depicted teens in a believable light - while there definitely are more than a few hormonally driven kids in the world, there are also those who hold onto their virginity as if it were the last piece of See's chocolate on the planet, even when they have a guy like Andros Bliss (whom I was imagining looking like Chad Michael Murray)in a tent on the beach. I know that must have taken some conviction. Anywho, I really identified with Allegra, for she shares my passion for memorizing useless factoids. I wish I could change the way I looked at life as easily as she did, but I guess that'll have to wait for either the apocolypse or my very own Andros Bliss to come riding into town...either way, I don't plan on holding my breath.
Great Read!.......2004-06-28
