Fringe science, or advance breakthru?.......2006-07-27
Currently one of the best hard-core mind expanding science texts avail to those who can't wait for "paradigms never change; they merely get abandoned by the next generation whom they no longer serve" to happen. This solid statement of facts not consonant with the current microbiological framework, quietly makes a compelling case against monomorphism which holds that bacteria are classifiable according to the same genetic rules that govern the animal world. They don't, the author says, but morph from form to form (spiral, rod etc) based on the biological terrain, rather than stay fixed like animal species do. More, they morph almost instantly, drawing on the gene-pool of all other living and dead bacteria, using a communication ability that can only be compared to the DDD telephone network.
This puts him in the maverick camp of folks like Royal Rife, Enderlein, Bechamp, V Livingston, some current researchers like Robert Young and Gaston Naessens...and quite outside the pale of men like Louis Pasteur, Robert Koch, and the mainstream crowd who today determine what is published in microbiology.
Not a microbiologist myself, while daunted by the jargon and technics, I was nonetheless able to grasp the drift of what this research portends, and the solid footing afforded by the study of micro-objects in their living ecology. This is in stark contrast to the limited world of deliberately (?) ignored or politically-correct theories that that result from limiting observation to exclusively dead tissues (e.g. dried blood, all electronmicroscopy etc).
If you don't mind being viewed as a fringe science investigator, then you'll enjoy this book.

Book Description
Twenty years ago the world slept, confident that biomedical science would protect it from devastating plagues. Our wake-up call sounded at the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic. Then came more unfamiliar pathogens in its wake, such as the West Nile virus. Meanwhile, the neglected diseases of the third world, including malaria and African sleeping sickness, festeredtheir victims salvageable only by unaffordable, patent-protected drugs. Robert S. Desowitz traces the histories of these diseases and the issues we must confrontthe morality and legality of patent laws, the effect of global warming on epidemics, public support for the commercial biochemical industry, the growing dissociation of clinicians and public health professionals, and the terrifying shadow of bioterrorism.

Summary of recent parasitology efforts, worldwide.......2006-08-17
Robert Desowitz has been associated with many of the recent efforts to control various diseases which are faciliated by parasites; I found his comments quite interesting.
Desowitz makes another hit!.......2004-04-05
Anything written by Robert Desowitz is always a worthwhile read and his most recent (and sadly, last) book, "Federal Bodysnatchers and the New Guinea Virus: Tales of Parasites, People, and Politics," is no exception. His expertise on human infectious diseases is impressive and thorough. He discusses the little known behind the scenes intrigues involved with the attempts to deal with malaria, West Nile virus, sleeping sickness, and several others. He also discusses the effects of global warming on the spread of infectious diseases and the roll of DDT in suppressing malaria specifically.
His earlier book "The Malaria Capers" (1991) should be read to completely understand the political and even criminal problems that developed within the malaria vaccine research program. These problems landed some researchers in jail and certainly have added little or nothing to the development of a real vaccine. The vaccine is tough to produce (over 70 years has so far been spent on the search) because of the fact that Plasmodium falciparum (the main target of vaccines as it is the main, if not sole cause of death from malaria) is a much more complicated organism than the viruses and bacteria that are usually the target. Because of its complex life cycle and ability to avoid antibodies and parasite-killing cells, malaria soon escapes any vaccine so far developed. A Colombian researcher is supposed to have a 100% effective vaccine, but Desowitz is rightly skeptical. As I have not heard of the vaccine being a success, I will have to agree.
The problems with DDT discussed by Desowitz demonstrate that there are no easy ways out. DDT was banned for agricultural use pretty much worldwide within a decade or so of the publication of "Silent Spring." It has since been used for malaria control in many tropical countries and has been more than a little effective, even though resistance had built up in mosquitoes in many areas (Desowitz notes that some researchers think that resistance was helped by the huge amounts of DDT used in agriculture). There is little doubt that DDT was an ecological disaster when it was broadcasted throughout the environment. However, there is a movement to ban it even for anti-malarial use and Desowitz thinks that this may be wrong-headed. I am not sure about this, but I have to admit that it is not my children that are at stake (at least for the present time!) However, if global warming continues (and neither Desowitz nor I am under any illusion that it will not) we may be staring at a lot of new and old diseases (including malaria- which has already made some incursions) that we never thought possible in the United States. Then we may sing a different tune!
This book should be read by everyone concerned about emerging diseases, whether brought by terrorists or (much more likely) by human movement and trade. It should also open anyone's eyes to the lack of efficiency of many organizations charged with the protection of world and national health.

Exceptional and Updated!.......2007-08-15
The 5 Star rating is due to the fact I live in the geographical area that this book is focused toward. (Pacific NW) It gives very clear descriptions and key indicators that help in determining which mushrooms are edible, as well as information regarding those that are not. It explains toxicity, advises about being careful with certain fungi, and informs greatly!
I do wish Margaret was still with us, but am pleased that the book was updated by her colleague.
excellent resource for Northwestern pot pickers.......1998-07-08
The photography in this book is excellent. The book is keyed to the Pacific Northwest, so those who live in or visit the area will find it very easy to use. The descriptors are clear especially concerning edibility. The book fits nicely into a day pack for all you hikers out there. I would highly recomend this book, it is probably one of the best books out there!

Customer Reviews:
Interesting........2002-07-05
This is a collection of the first ten issues of the World Explorer Magazine. (WEX for short.) There are articles about pterodactyls, caves in Arizona, missing cities, interesting trips and more. There are some little funny tidbits in among all of this- jokes, postcards from readers, cartoons and Riply's Believe it or Not type information.
This is an interesting book/collection of magazines.
My two complaints- the book is very big in size and it makes it difficult for some intersting late night reading. Two- the reproduction quality is poor- this makes it difficult to look at already poor quality photos.
What an interesting book that looks at the off beat, far off, interesting and fun.

Book Description
Horizon Scientific Press titles focus on high-level microbiology and molecular biology topics. Written by internationally renowned and highly respected leaders in the field, they comprise of review manuals, practical manuals, and reference texts for research scientists, bioscience professionals and graduate students.
The publication of the complete sequence of the C. jejuni genome in 2000 provided new insight into this leading gastrointestinal pathogen and presented scientists with an exciting resource to improve our understanding of the biology of this bacterium. In this book internationally recognized Campylobacter experts critically review the most important aspects of Campylobacter research, providing the first coherent picture of the organism's molecular and cellular biology since the publication of the genome.
Most contributions are written from a molecular and genomic perspective and contain speculative models upon which to base future research efforts. Introductory chapters explore the taxonomy, genetic diversity, habitats, and epidemiological analysis of campylobacters. Other chapters review Campylobacter plasmid biology, antimicrobial resistance, stress response, motility, chemotaxis, metabolism and bioenergetics of C. jejuni, and polysaccharide biosynthesis (including lipooligosaccharide, capsule biosynthesis, and protein glycosylation). The final chapters focus more directly on interactions with the host, for example, the mechanisms of host cell invasion, interactions with phagocytes, and the use of microarrays to analyze gene expression in response to infection by C. jejuni. Each chapter is independent and can be read in isolation, but as a whole the book provides an important resource summarizing our current knowledge of Campylobacter molecular and cellular biology.
Essential reading for all researchers working with Campylobacter and related organisms.

History of Surfing
ASIN: 1586852132 |
Book Description
$39.95 hardcover * 1-58685-213-2 * May 10 x 10 in, 224 pp, 150 Color Photographs, Rights: W, Sports Once the sport of Polynesian kings, surfing embodies the ultimate encounter between man and nature. Played out on the beaches and breaking waves of the world's continental fringes, surfing is the epitome of a classic cult of freedom and individual expression-an arena not only for survival but for grace under pressure, style, and artistic invention. Yet surfing is more than just riding the waves-it's a lifestyle, a state of mind, a subculture with its own codes and heroes. In Stoked: A History of Surf Culture, surf journalist Drew Kampion traces the evolution of the modern beach culture and the challenging, beautiful sport that gave rise to it. From its Polynesian origins and the early days of Duke Kahanamoku's beach boys, to the California-style surfing cult that exploded in the 1960s, to the international pro circuits and radical big-wave contests of today, Stoked tells the compelling story that has inspired entire genres of music, movies, fashion, and art. Drew Kampion is a writer, editor, and photographer who lives on Whidbey Island near Seattle. He graduated from California State College at Northridge and is a former editor of Surfer, Surfing, and Windsurfer magazines. Kampion is an avid surfer and writes about the sport regularly.
Customer Reviews:
A complete history of the evolution of surfing with great photos!.......2007-06-01
i consider myself as much of an expert on the history of surfing as one could be without actually having lived through the early days, and while reading through this book I was not only entertained from cover to cover, but actually learned a few new things! The facts are presented along with interesting points colorfully explained. The photos are worth the price of the book alone, but the text adds so much more. This it the best history of surfing i've ever read!
Stoked on STOKED!.......2007-05-26
Kampion's writing on about surf culture always makes me feel like a kid again. All his books are keepers.
A National Surf Treasure.......2007-05-26
Drew Kampion has been chronicling the surfing subculture since the start of the modern era. With "Stoked!" he's produced THE defintive history of this "thing of ours." (As a surf-writer myself, Kampion's stylistic influence has been indelible.) There is no one else in his class.
This guy is a national surf treasure. If you surf, read him. (If you don't surf, please don't start.)
A Lifetime of Research.......2007-01-27
I just finished the book - New Edition. I am stunned by the immense levels of research and photographic documentation that went into it. He got every pivot point along the surfing path over the last 60 years.
Even with the best research tools it would have taken many years to create. Further, only one person - Kampion - could have done such a remarkable job. In his case, it took a lifetime of research. This book will become one of my ten favorite books of all time.
A visually oriented historical survey.......2003-09-19
Now in a new and expanded edition, Stoked! A History Of Surf Culture by writer, photographer, and surfing expert Drew Kampion (who was also a former editor of "Surfer," "Surfing," "Wind Surf" and "Wind Tracks" magazines) is an informative, adventurous, visually oriented historical survey of a wildly popular sport -- and the people who embraced and developed it. Gorgeous full-color photographs stir visions of wind and wave, while the accessible text traces the love, lore, and sometimes tragedy of this exciting pastime down through the years. Stoked! is enthusiastically recommended -- especially for surfing enthusiasts!

lots of models from "adequate" to "very good".......2006-12-04
I am a teacher of writing at middle school. I use this text book myself to pull-out parts of the included essays as models for my students. The organization and information about how writers think and go through the writing proccess is very helpful to students who think they cannot write ot hate writing. (There is not ONE WAY to go through the writing process, despite what most of our teacher trainings will tell us.) The many quotes about the writing process spark good discussions and free up students to realize that even published authors re-work and revise constantly. This is not a technical book, but is recommended for a more holistic approach to thinking about how to write and how to improve your written communication. Also this book helps teachers who have read and use the methods of "In The Middle" with many authentic pieces of writing, beyond what is in that book.
Good Book.......2006-11-06
My teacher didnot really use it, but it did help me a lot on the essays i had to do. I would recommed this book especially to students wanting to get that A.
Fast shipment!.......2005-10-05
This book came to me in pretty good shape. I was impressed with how quickly it arrived to my house. The book was slightly used but it was at a good price and it served it's purpose.
St. Martins Guide to Reviews.......2005-09-26
This book is incredible, not only is it necessary for english 3a but I would never have been able to write this review. Not only that but it teaches you how to write good reviews, not bad ones. This book is great!
Much better than other texts.......2005-08-11
I have used this text in my College Writing class for roughly 4 years, and I continue to like the text overall. I disagree with some other views about the quality of the essays in the texts. The readings on argument are quite good, and they evoke discussion in my classes without prompting. I also like the fact that the text does not have a decidedly liberal bias. IE. They have one essay in favor of same sex marriage and one against it. The end of chapter prewriting activities are also good as are the peer review activities.
What the text lacks is a section on annotated bibliographies, which my students have to write as part of their research assignment. It also lacks a good section on comparison and contrast; some sample essays would be essential in this area.
Overall, this is a good text. It is much better than the dreadful Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing, which is written in a language that most college students do not understand.
