Outdoor Leadership.......2007-10-18

On the face of it, this book is about how to successfully lead a group of outdoor adventurers who have paid for your leadership or who by explicit agreement or unspoken convention yield authority to you. Thus, everyone in the group holds you ultimately responsible for their well being and morale, and you have the rank and social power within the group to send someone packing if you so judge. Since the context of this leadership is an outdoor adventure, the examples of how to lead involve scenarios of that sort. Extrapolation can go in two directions: outdoor adventure in general, no matter who is in charge, and leadership in general, no matter what the context. The first arises from the attention in the book to wise planning and preparation before the trek, and while out in the wild, to calm, reasoned, compassionate leadership choices aimed at the safety and well-tempered dynamics of the group. The second arises because leading in the field and leading indoors both involve having socially sanctioned authority over people who may disagree with your choices or your right to power.

The book reads a little too much like a PBS special, where on stage there's an ever smiling man in a soft sweater, pacing slowly with small gestures as he speaks. Behind him is a large screen where we can read his discussion points and favorite quotations. In a quiet, gentle voice he urges us all to find inner peace and harmony, for in finding our calm center we will inspire respect and cooperative obedience.

Outdoor Leadership: Technique, Common Sense and Self-Confidence.......2007-01-11

This is a very helpful book for those who are pursuing leadership roles. I am impressed with the way the author incorporates basic values into leadership issues.

Care with regards to varying team capabilities.......2006-11-01

This book challenges you to look more closely at your team's ability to perform. Examples are given in how to handle situations more persuasively without offensiveness.
Leadership is to be earned thru the team's acknowledgement and permission to lead based upon your ability. Yet leaders must also learn to go to team members for their expertise and experience while factoring the teams overall comfort with the task and method to be undertaken.
The author builds his book on solid basic principles and adds some often much overlooked guidelines. One major point is about caring for your people.
The author doesn't spell out enough that how you treat your least or worst team member is how the others will respect you or mistrust you. Leaders need trust for honesty and integrity but also respect which comes mainly from your technical expertise and ability. This is the books only week point.

I'm an Eagle Scout from troop 572 of Carolina Puerto Rico, and all the leadership skill that I learn during my best time of my life is in that book.
I'm also worked at Denali National Park, Alaska and is great see a lot of people that love the wild and love to camp and hike, but more important is to be a leader in the woods with the visitors, that's why to be an Interps in Denali needs a lot of skills and Information that this book have it.
Any Outdoor Leader needs to read this Book.

Maybe Fewer Stars for Corporate Use.......2001-11-16

I purchased this book for analagous use in a large corporation. It contains many useful insights and guidelines for leadership. Unfortunately, the author's attempt to generalize the definition of the term "pucker factor" is not enough to overcome the term's original anatomical meaning, hence making it questionable for corporate use. This conclusion is based on interpretations of the term from employees I surveyed. A more neutral term like "stress factor" would make it a perfect metaphorical book for use in corporations.

Yes, this is a textbook, but well written, and full of great info, easy to read. A little cheezy in spots, but the world would be a better place if people understood and applied the concepts in this book.

This may be a good text for the subject but is outrageously priced at over $68. Even considering that textbooks are always overpriced, this book shouldn't cost more than $40.

This book is great for anyone looking for entertainment in NYC. Not only does it break down all of the bars/clubs/restaurants/lounges for any kind of mood...it gives you great ideas for any kind of entertainment you are looking for. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone living or planning to visit NYC.

This book was the most hilarious, quick-witted thing I've read in a long, long time. I am EAGERLY awaiting the author's novel. I am her hugest fan now! The book is great (not to mention the chic art), includes many many places to hit in NYC and the stories are absolutely hysterical. She cuts nightlife down with a double-edged sword and makes choosing where to go out SO enjoyable, especially for a fellow soon-to-be-former commuter LI'er like me. Good stuff! I'm a dude and all I have to say is, Thank you Daniella! I have been living in NYC for several years now and I can finally say that I have found my Nightlife guide. This is not just a "Girls Guide". Any smart guy should pick up this book and read it cover to cover. Fellas, she TELLS us where ALL the ladies are. How much easier can it get? I read it, used it and meet many females. You may have to go to the Beauty Bar, but who cares...you'll be glad you did later. She has it all in there. Be it the local hole(Reservior)to the high-roller(Bungalow 8) joints. She knows her spots and you will too!

This book rocks! I'm a guy and I have to say that this is truly not just a "Girls Guide". My buddies and I picked it up one night at a local bookstore, just to see what all the hoop-la was about. Fantastic little book!.......2004-09-21

I recently moved to NYC and this book is great! Easy to read- the book is divided into multiple, easy to find categories. The descriptions are great, and their little icons next to each entry (Representing whether things are cheap, a good place to meet people, a pick-up joint, a dive bar, etc)are fantastic. Also, I found several ideas on things to do and see that I haven't seen in any other book. (For example they have listed a trapeze school!)
For each entry they have also listed an address, phone number, when it's open, and e-mail addresses (if applicable) making all things easy to find or check out.
Additionally, this is an attractive and small book, making it a little less-noticable if you're carrying it around with you yet don't want to look like a tourist!
All in all, this is a wonderful book for any girls who are visiting or living in NY and want to check out the town.

I love these books.......2001-02-18

ok, look im not going to tell you about the book because thats what everyone does! I'm just going to tell you that these books are amazing but I suggest that you read them in order or they might be confusing!

I thought the book was pretty good. I was sort of glad that Allison took the picture of Shylo and Dean in the Midwest Girls (I hate the name Shylo!!!) If only Dean could have stayed in the pageant while Shylo would be sent packing. I hated the way she treated her twin sister. If she wanted to take her feeling out on someone, she had no right to take it out on Shelby. I got so happy when Tori got smacked but it also made me even more angry when Allison threatened her. When I went to the book store I found the National Pageant book and looked to the back to find out who the winner was (I could't wait to find out and I did that with all the other books too, hehehe). Allison kind of makes me like her, and then again she makes me hate her guts (it switchs back and forth). I like Dean a lot but he really should stop teling people that his girlfriend (Katie Laramie) is in the pageant. Somebody could just blurt it out or they could turm against Dean and tell Mrs. Crownwell-Stevens. I felt so sorry when Kimber found out what her mother did. But when I read the part when they were at the hospital I thought it was wrong of Mrs. Crownwell-Stevens to get mad at the nurse when she was just telling her about the blood being different (it wasn't her fault Kimber and her dad's blood were different). Anyways, I liked Mrs. Crownwell-Stevens, and the book was just as great as the others!!!

I love the Pageant Series!.......1998-09-29

This book rocks! I was so suprised when Seirra's boyfriend, Kevin, asked to marry him! What does she say? I'm not telling! Justin is up to his old tricks--this time, with Tamara! And Allison--well...I think she's the meanest "villian" ever--that makes her great! Read it!

The PAGEANT series is SO good!!!!!.......1998-08-12

I've also read the #1 and #2 in this series. Katie and Dean are meant to be together. Justin is a no-good, lying, cheating scum. Allison, a.k.a. The Virus, is a no-good,lying, cheating schemer who wreaks havoc whereever she goes. Justin and Allison are perfect for each other. I like Willow, Dawn, and Scarlet-Caress from #1, Molly, Sarah, Pepper, Roni, Shelby (Shylo's kinda mean), and Neely (who stole The Virus's roll of film to prevent her from developing it and showing Mrs. Crownwell-Stevens the picture of Shylo kissing Dean--you go, girl!), and Sierra, Zoey, Tamara, and Kimber (Tori's too weird). I also like Megan, Allison's sweet twin sister. I like these books a lot, and I'm gonna buy the next (is it the last one--I mean, what 'bout the national pageant--who's gonna win?) book in the series. Q.L.
