Customer Reviews:
A great book that just fell short of extraordinary.......2002-10-22
Definitely worth the price and the book does its job of helping you identify tree species of Michigan. Offers additional in-depth information about the anatomy of leaves, twig cross-sections, fruit, wood characteristics and uses. Most of which is more than average readers will probably want to know, but is interesting reading none-the-less. All I wanted was a reference to ID the trees on my property.
I was pleasantly surprised that the book also includes information on vines and shrubs, but was quickly disappointed when I discovered that this section offered no illustrations or pictures of either - only text descriptions.
Contrary to the front cover, the book has no photographs! Another bummer. All species are represented by illustrations only, but at least I can honestly say the drawings seem extremely accurate and have great detail.
My four-star rating is also due to the incomplete shrub and vine sections. I realize that this is a "tree" book and that adding such information is a plus, but the writer(s) should have stayed consistent and included illustrations for these as well. Trying to identify features by descriptions only is tedious and really seems to take away the joy of the whole adventure. Too bad, it would have been the "icing on the cake".
I recommend buying this book as a main reference and suggest finding supplement information via the web. There are endless sites that offer much of the same information for free, but carrying this book into the woods would certainly be more convenient than lugging a stack of print outs.
best tree field guide for the upper midwest.......1999-10-13
If you need to help your kid with the perennial leaf collection or if you just want a handy field guide for trees, I have found none better than Michigan Trees. I own a well worn copy of the 1978 edition and it is so popular among friends I am ordering another to loan out.

Fruit Key and Twig Key to Trees and Shrubs
ASIN: 0472089218 |
Book Description
Now in its tenth decade of publication, Michigan Trees has been, since it was first introduced in 1913, the must-have reference book for anyone who wants to know about the trees of this unique North American region.
In this new and updated edition, several new species have been added to the lineup, as well as sections on tree ecology and fall color. Written and illustrated in a style that appeals at once to academic botanists and armchair arborphiles alike, Michigan Trees gives readers everything they need to know for identifying trees in the Great Lakes state. Included with each description are fascinating notes and asides (for example, this tidbit on the jack pine: "Parklike or savanna stands in north-central Michigan are prime habitat for the rare Kirtland's warbler that breeds nowhere else in the world."). Also includes a tree key and identification section illustrated with elegantly simple line drawings that reveal the tiny, signature details that make each tree unique.
Burton V. Barnes is Professor of Forestry at the University of Michigan. Formerly a research forester, he is best known for his research and publications in forest ecology and forest genetics.
Warren H. Wagner, Jr. was a world authority on ferns. He had been Professor Emeritus of Botany and Natural Resources at the University of Michigan before his death at the age of 80 in 2000.

An Excellent, Concise Guide to Trees.......2007-01-24
I have been identifying trees since childhood, and have found this book quite useful. It is applicable not only to Michigan, but also to surrounding states (I live in Illinois).
The front of the book includes a summary of basic leaf anatomy. It includes sketches of leaf shapes and leaf margins. There is also a diagram of oak leaves as related to their immediate environment of growth (swampy, etc.). A sketch of inflorescent types is also provided.
The remainder of the book is primarily a key to tree identification. Two pages are devoted to each tree. The left open page is a description of a particular kind of tree. A moderate level of knowledge of botanical terminology is needed to fully comprehend it. The right (facing) open page contains diagrams (not photos) of leaf shapes, flowers, seeds, etc. for the tree being identified.
Michigan Trees.......2007-01-11
I did not realize when I ordered this book that it was in black and white illustrations. I would have much more prefered it had colored photos of trees to help me identify them. I considered it a waste of money.
nice tree book.......2006-12-22
Pretty decent book, quality paper and covers, informative, a fairly good guide, I would prefer full pictures of trees, which would show the bark, even if only in black and white. If your new to trees this book could be quite helpful and useful.
Very interesting & useful!.......2004-05-15
This is a great book both for identification and for planning which trees to plant in your yard. For each tree, not only its size, but also shade tolerance, growth rate, moisture requirements, preferred habitat & other trees that share its habitat are listed. A second book is planned to cover the shrubs & vines, which I am looking forward to.
The final chapters cover aspects of the Michigan climate including the different types of plant communities, vegetation history of Michigan from the glaciers to the present day, length of growing season for different areas, and average temperature & precipitation.
must have for Great Lakes area tree enthusiasts.......2004-02-10
The new edition of Michigan Trees has lots of goodies--including colorized maps of serficial geology and vegetation communities, new species, and information about chromosome numbers for each species. However, the information about shrubs is gone (presumably to be put into a separate volume?), which detracts (slightly) from the book. However, it is still the best guide to trees in the Great Lakes region because of its beautiful line drawings, copious information about habitats, and plethora of identification characters.

Great photos and variety; less than adequate description.......2000-06-06
The best feature of this book is the photos, period. There are some excellent shots of wildflowers from the dunes, prairies, woodlands, and wetlands found throughout the book. Plants are grouped according to their habitat, making plants easier to identify in the field than they would be in an ordinary key. There are quite a few problems with the book, though. Bloom dates are very misleading and seem to be stilted to the very northern portion of the range covered. There is also a misidentification of appendaged waterleaf (canada waterleaf in this book), which is an oversight considering three botanists worked on the manuscript. There are also quite a few spelling errors that should have been corrected. Finally, the information is tired and recycled from the writers' past works. Great for the photos but I was highly disappointed by the text.

Great Devotional for Outdoorsman.......2007-07-31
Enjoyed Steve Chapman and his down to earth and close to God experiences. Highly recommend to anyone. Thanks.
Still Hunting with God.......2001-11-04
Steve Chapman follows up his "A Look at LIfe from a Deer Stand" with a fine pocket devotional that can be a part of every person's hunting experience. Each one can be read in several minutes and provide hours of meditative fodder for the quiet, still hours one often spends on a Deer Stand. I recommend it. Great gift for fellow hunters, too. Not preachy. Very practical.

Worthy read .......2007-08-26
While the method outlined in this book is no great revelation, the anecdotal material about Mr. Farber's encounters in other languages, and the confidence he communicates in one's ability to successfully teach themself a foreign language, make this book a worthy read. Also, I found his survey of the difficulties and incentives of learning particular languages very helpful. (I haven't compared this book to others like it.) Lastly, my caveat to the new language learner is this: no book should offer you a method of language learning that doesn't necessitate much work and a large investment of time. However, with the right strategy Farber has shown me that it should also be fun, right from the start.
Propelled me into Korean, Italian, and improved Spanish.......2007-08-23
Barry Farber has both a fun style, and some fantastic tips . I used to complain that I wasn't good at learning languages. I had had four years of high school Spanish, and three years in college, and still spoke very awkwardly.
However, I decided to try his tips when I started Italian-- and within two months, I was able to have a decent conversation! Farber's shortcuts-- grouping similar words, using flashcards during your downtime, starting with Pimsleur audio-- are all efficient and effective, and a far cry from the ineffective methods we often experience in language classes.
My Italian is not fluent-- but with minimal study, it is quite good, and I got so inspired by my success that I have been studying Korean, and went back to Spanish as well. At this point I can converse comfortably in all three languages.
I still read Mr. Farber's book when I get discouraged, or feel like I'm not progressing-- his cheerleading, "just do it!" attitude is great.
Some good tips..........2007-07-30
First of all, the book I have is the 1991 version, but I'm assuming that it's not updated based upon some of the reviews that I've read. If that's the case, then one of my major complaints is that it's dated, e.g. he gushes over the advent of the Walkman. (Actually I just purchased a digital voice recorder and plan to use it the way that he suggests using cassettes, so the advice itself is sound.) He really needs to revist the text to put it in a 21st century context.
One omission in the book is that he doesn't mention the use of a short-wave radio. I listen to Japanese news broadcasts every night before going to sleep. It's a great way to hear "the real thing" as he often emphasizes.
I also agree with other reviewers that Mr. Farber's ego is a tad too big, and I find his writing style to be quite annoying.
In addition, he could really have whittled down much of the book to the gist of the message; but what publisher is going to invest in a 20-page book?
Based upon my own experience of self-learning Japanese (saying "self-taught" of course is a misnomer...without the help of native speaking tutors or practice partners you're basically screwed...)I have to agree with most of his points and think that he gives good advice.
But, as others have said, his whole chapter on mnemonic devices is great if you're learning a romance language, but I struggle to find any examples of where it can apply in Japanese. The sounds of the words are just too different from English to give it any practical use.
Bottom line: Buy the book used or at a discount, read it with a grain of salt, and pick and choose some of his techniques which will surely help you with your language study.
Practical Advice, Entertaining Read.......2007-07-23
While Farber's techniques for language learning are not anything new (flashcards, workbooks, travel, mnemonic devices, talking to natives and basically exposing yourself to the language in every way possible), he does present the obvious in a totally entertaining and inspiring way. If you are new to language learning, then this book will get you on track. If you are not new to language learning, then you will still enjoy this book.
How to learn..........2007-03-12
It's everything they said it would be. A little out dated on technology but the form and function is the same It has many tools than can help you in picking up the foreign language of your choice. I would recommend it to everyone who is starting out with a self-learner approach to a foreign language.

OTHERS HAVE BEEN BETTER!!!!!.......2002-09-15
Evelyn King and her friend Melissa Braddock have been kidnapped by four men. They are being held for ransom, gold to come from Nate King. Also involved is the friend of the Kings, Ezriah Hampton. He has been in the last two or three books. Nate and his wife, Winona take off after the kidnappers. In the meantime Evelyn and Melissa escape and have to face the wilderness by themselves. Nate and Winona bear down on the four men. Will they get there in time???? They should not have made Winona bad, that was a bad choice. As usual Ezriah messes things up and bad times come to Winona. These books are based on a journal keep by the real Nate King of his experiences in the mountains plus other sources. If you like this time in history and life of the men of the mountain, you will like this series. I do thing many of his other books have been better. Several pages in this one is what people are thinking about, other places and times. To keep the stories going you should start with number one and plow on through.
BRAVO!.......2002-08-14
Another terrific addition to the Wilderness series. Nate King's daughter is abducted and held for ransom. Nothing goes as planned for the bad guys. Suspense and a strong plot make this a can't miss. The ending- Hold on to your hats! Perils Of The Wind is a keeper!
