Book Description
Decomposition of organic matter is a major ecosystem process involving an array of different organisms, including bacteria, fungi and invertebrates. The main objective of this book is to provide students and laboratory instructors at universities and professional ecologists with a broad range of established methods to study plant litter decomposition. Detailed protocols for direct use in the field or laboratory are presented in an easy to follow step-by-step format. A short introduction to each protocol reviews the ecological significance and principles of the technique and points to key references. Although most methods are described for freshwater ecosystems, many will work equally well in the presented or slightly modified form for studies in marine and terrestrial environments.

Book Description
Litter Decomposition describes one of the most important processes in the biosphere the decay of organic matter. It focuses on the decomposition process of foliar litter in the terrestrial systems of boreal and temperate forests due to the greater amount of data from those biomes. The availability of several long-term studies from these forest types allows a more in-depth approach to the later stages of decomposition and humus formation. Differences between the decay of woody matter and foliar litter is discussed in detail and a different pattern for decomposition is introduced.
While teachers and students in more general subjects will find the most basic information on decomposition processes in this book, scientists and graduate students working on decomposition processes will be entirely satisfied with the more detailed information and the overview of the latest publications on the topic as well as the methodological chapter where practical information on methods useful in decomposition studies can be found. Abundant data sets will serve as an excellent aid in teaching process and will be also of interest to researchers specializing in this field as no thorough database exists at the moment.
* Provides over 60 tables and 90 figures
* Offers a conceptual 3-step model describing the different steps of the decomposition process, demonstrating changes in the organic-chemical structure and nutrient contents
* Includes a synthesis of the current state of knowledge on foliar litter decomposition in natural systems
* Integrates more traditional knowledge on organic matter decomposition with current problems of environmental pollution, global change, etc.
* Details contemporary knowledge on organic matter decomposition

Book Description
The present book gives a modernized and comprehensive overview of the degradation of major litter components as well as the sum of processes when forest plant litter decomposes, releases nutrients and turns into humus. Covering mainly boreal and temperate forests, the book gives a synthesis of the different sub-processes on the basis that decomposition is microbially mediated and develops a system in the decomposition processes leading to chemical changes in litter. Further, it introduces a conceptual model for litter transformations from litter fall until the decomposing litter accumulates as humus. The effects of substrate quality, climate, and their interactions on decomposition are presented as well as examples of litter types that break the basic pattern. A system is suggested for humus accumulation rates among forest systems, a system that may be a starting point for estimates of carbon sequestration in forest systems.

Book Description
This book brings together contemporary ideas on the characterization and manipulation of plant quality and especially its role in soil organic matter formation and nutrient cycling. Research from the leading workers in both temperate and tropical systems is included. There are also contributions describing work outside decomposition in soil ecosystems, such as the work of plant biochemists and animal nutritionists, as research in these areas has provided many ideas and concepts used in plant quality analysis. A wide range of topics is covered from investigations at the molecular level through to management options for farmers in relation to optimizing biological management of crop residues. The work presented in this volume is valuable to all those researching and managing the supply of nutrients to plants. It is important reading for soil scientists, plant physiologists, and crop scientists.

Description:
The effects of a white clover (Trifolium repens) living mulch on the soil detritus food-web during maize (Zea mays) culture were studied on Andosols for 2 years. In the first year, the use of white clover (W) and Italian ryegrass (I; Lolium multiflorum) was compared against the control treatment in the absence of fertilization. In the second year, combinations of white clover and inorganic fertilizers were studied. Bacterial and fungal substrate-induced respiration and the population densities of protozoa (flagellates, naked amoebae, ciliates), nematodes, and microarthropods (mites, collembolans) increased with the use of white clover living mulch. In the first year, nematode and microarthropod populations increased throughout the growing season in the living mulch plots. In the second year, the communities of soil organisms under the white clover living mulch had reached a more mature successional stage and were characterized by increased populations of organisms in the fungal pathway of organic matter decomposition and by a high population density of higher trophic groups (e.g., mesostigmatid mites and ciliates). The higher litter decomposition rate in the living mulch plots suggested that the function of the detritus food-web was enhanced under the living mulch system. On the other hand, inorganic fertilization only increased populations of nematodes and mesostigmatid mites in mid-summer, possibly owing to better maize growth, and had no effect on other soil organisms.

Description:
Differences in food resource use by earthworms (Megascolecidae) were studied at three Japanese forest sites with different latitude in cool-temperate (TOEF), temperate (MFF) and subtropical (Yona) zones. The vertical distribution and the fractionation of gut contents of earthworms were analysed to determine ecological categories. At TOEF and MFF, earthworm communities were composed of species living mainly in litter and topsoil layers. At TOEF, Amynthas vittatus (Goto and Hatai, 1898), Metaphire hilgendorfi (Michaelsen, 1892) and Eisenia japonica (Michaelsen, 1891) (Lumbricidae) were dominant, the former two species being mainly observed in the litter layer whereas the latter was in soil layers. At MFF, 'Metaphire' soulensis (Kobayashi, 1938), Amynthas purpuratus (Ishizuka, 1999), A. vittatus and Amynthas distichus (Ishizuka, 2000) were dominant and the former three species were observed in the litter layer whereas the latter one occurred in soil. The gut contents of those living in the litter layer had more organic fractions, whereas the latter had more inorganic fractions. Therefore these species were regarded as epigeic species and polyhumic-endogeic species, respectively. At Yona, Amynthas yambaruensis (Ishizuka and Azama, 2000) had burrows through 20cm depth with casts and middens on the forest floor, and their fraction ratio of gut content was intermediate between the epigeic and endogeic earthworms at TOEF and MFF. Therefore A. yambaruensis was classified as anecic. In addition, at Yona, there were two unidentified Amynthas spp.; one epigeic species in the midden of A. yambaruenesis, and one endogeic species found in B-layer soil. Natural abundances of the stable isotope pairs ^1^3C/^1^2C and ^1^5N/^1^4N (@d^1^3C and @d^1^5N) were measured in soil organic matter and earthworm tissue. @d^1^5N values showed epigeic
< polyhumic-endogeic at TOEF and MFF, whereas at Yona, @d^1^5N values were in the order anecic
< epigeic
< endogeic. The observed ^1^5N enrichments thus appear to indicate that the functional niches of earthworm species are due to resources available to them in the decomposition process from fresh litter to humus. @d^1^3C values showed similar trends, but the differences between ecological group was smaller compared to @d^1^5N.

Description:
The carbon (C) isotopic composition of soil microbial biomass (SMB) was measured in litter-amended and control plots located at three different elevations (280-2210m, sea level) during the decomposition of plant litter (Vicia villosa) added to upland soils in southwest China. Fourteen months around the addition of litter, soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) was followed during experiments. Results showed that SMBC was significantly higher in the litter-amended plots than the controls at the two lowest but not the highest elevation and there was no corresponding difference in microbial @d^1^3C values at the same time. However, microbial @d^1^3C values at the two lowest sites were significantly higher in the litter-amended plots immediately following the peak of microbial C. The @d^1^3C value of SMBC in litter-amended plot was higher than that in control plot, indicating that the degree of microbial decomposition and quality of plant litter will effect on shift of @d^1^3C values of SMBC, which may be mainly caused by microbial selective utilization of organic compounds. The sequence of magnitude of @d^1^3C value of SMBC was consistent with that of soil organic carbon (SOC) among three experiment sites, indicating that the @d^1^3C value of SMBC reflects gross changes in the @d^1^3C value of SOC in the corresponding samples.

Description:
The patterns of microbial respiration and enzyme activity (cellulase, xylanase, laccase and peroxidase) in the leaf litter of two evergreen sclerophyll species, Myrtus communis and Quercus ilex, were compared during decay in a low shrubland and in a coppice wood in a Natural Reserve in the Mediterranean area. The two litter types had similar initial amounts of lignin, cellulose and acid-detergent-soluble substances, but the litter from M. communis had a lower N content and higher C/N ratio. In spite of this, the decomposition rate of M. communis litter was higher than for Q. ilex. Whilst no seasonal variation was observed in the rate of organic matter degradation, respiration and extractable cellulase and xylanase activities showed seasonal variation in both litter types with the highest values in winter-early spring and the lowest in summer, and showed positive correlations with water content. Peroxidase activity exhibited a seasonal pattern and was higher in Q. ilex than in M. communis, while laccase activity was higher in M. communis and increased with fungal biomass as degradation progressed. Nevertheless, no relationship was found between laccase and peroxidase activity and lignin degradation. The results obtained indicate that the seasonal alternation of moist and dry periods is the major factor influencing soil biological activity in the Mediterranean area. The occurrence of pronounced seasonal variation in litter enzyme activity prevents the determination of possible correlations with litter mass loss.

Description:
Northern peatlands represent about 30% of the global soil C pools. The C pool in peat is a result of a relatively small imbalance between production and decay. High water levels and the consequent anoxia are considered the major causes for the imbalance. As such, the C sink of a peatland is labile, and sensitive to disturbances in environmental conditions. Changes in peatland ecosystem functions may be mediated through land-use change, and/or climatic warming. In both cases, lowering of the water level may be the key factor. Logically, lowered water levels with the consequent increase in oxygen availability in the surface soil may be assumed to result in accelerated rates of organic matter decomposition. Yet, earlier research has given highly contrasting results concerning the effects of lowered water levels on the rates of decomposition and the C sink/source behaviour of peatlands. The mechanisms controlling this variation remain unresolved. This paper summarizes the changes observed in the biotic and abiotic controls of decomposition following natural or artificial lowering of peatland water levels and show that they are complex and their interactions have not been previously explored. Long-term changes in the C cycle may differ from short-term changes. Short-term changes represent a disturbance in the ecosystem adapted to the pre-water-level-lowering conditions, while long-term changes result from several adaptive mechanisms of the ecosystem to the new hydrological regime. While in a short term, the disturbed system will always lose C, the long-term changes inherently vary among peatland types, climates, and extents of change in the water level. The paper closes by identifying the gaps in our knowledge that need to be addressed when proceeding towards a causal and unifying explanation for the C sink/source behaviour of peatlands following persistent lowering of the water level.

A philosophical look at a physical art........2005-05-01
Bruce Lee was an amazing person, able to blend the physical beauty of the body with the philosophical beauty of the mind and create the true essence of martial art. In the Tao of Gung Fu, Bruce Lee devotes individual attention to philosophical and physical aspects of his form. His main attention is on Wing Chung, the style of Gung Fu that he himself studied under a Chinese master. Bruce devotes most of the first part of the book to basics and philosophical principles of Gung Fu, including the redirecting of the opponents energy to use it against him.
I would recommend this book to most practitioners, and those that are considering getting into martial arts. The second half of the book covers some basic techniques, stances, stretches, exercises, and practices, while the last twenty or thirty pages include personal quotes, answered questions, and biographies of some of the old masters.
This book is good for beginners because it gives them an insight into the art and some of the things it will take to be successful. It also allows them to understand some of the basic philosophies of the martial arts.
Those with practice will enjoy this book because it goes into some of the more interesting aspects of the art and is written eloquently by one of the greatest martial artists in history.
This should be added to most martial art libraries. I've practiced multiple styles for nearly ten years and find that this book is an invaluable resource to study and train with.
Bruce Lee Tao of Gung Fu.......2005-01-31
The book Bruce Lee the Tao of Gung Fu was a good book because Bruce Lee hiself teaches you how to protect yourself from dangerous people. Also the style is gung fu a weapon to becoming a great skill fighter. Bruce Lee is one of the best in teaching
When and where to srike a person that is trying to take you down. But Bruce Lee doesent want his learners to just be using the style on any body just use it when needed. Their is three types of Gung Fu you can learn but to do so you have to be very fucus to learn step by step. Reading this book told me alot I didnt know.
I recomend this book to anybody or everybody because this book was good it taught me stuff that I never knew befor. I now that if somebody read this book they will feel the same way as me. If you like book that teaches you things then I recomend that you just give this book a try beacuse Bruce hisself puts hard work in makeing the reader's relax and enjoy the book. So yes I would recomend this book once again.
Get The Real Message.......2004-08-26
This is a good book in that a reader can get a clearer idea of who Bruce Lee was. One reviewer was quite rude and unfair to Bruce Lee, took offense to the man as though he had written the book. Bruce Lee's writings were made into a book, Bruce Lee did not write nor construct the book. So appreciating that fact, it's fair to say that a reader gets a pretty good idea as to what type of prerson Bruce Lee was. Bruce Lee did study philosphy and he shared a lot of what he learned from others as well as his own personal views and opinions. Any true Bruce Lee fan knows Bruce never presented himself as "the one who knew everything" he tried to inspire and/or guide people to be themselves, find the true meaning of themselves an not be fixed, labeled, a copy, tied to any set thing or boxed into something with no way for self expression. And not just to be applied to the Martial Arts but in life as well. I think the insulting reader was confused by the deeper meaning of Bruce's writings and what he preceived to be "Bruce the great philosopher". The reader didn't get the real message, that if there is value in any book, as there is with this book (better insight and inspiration)then it should be recommended. Bruce Lee's writings should be appreciated for the content of what was originally from Bruce, his writings in this book should be looked upon to help people gain a better understanding of the thoughts and principles that guided him-Bruce Lee. If some people are inspired to follow his principles or those of whom he learned from, I think that's the point. If a reader has already made up in his or her mind that Bruce Lee's writings are not "real philosophy" or at least based on "real philosophy" then don't buy the book. In my opinion, this book would still be a good book no matter whose writings they were.
Interesting.......2004-07-02
Fame brings out jaleousy in some people. Bruce Lee was one of the greatest martial art authority and expert known to the world. Anyone with at least some basic spiritual understanding of chinese Kung Fu could just not write with total disrespect about Lee no matter what he/she has to say. In fact the reviewer below despite his belief of the contrary and maybe years of training betrays in his own words his own frustration and a total lack of measure. He sadly belongs with the novices.
One thing indeniable about Bruce Lee is that he got something right and beware if you only look at the surface you might simply miss it. Real skills lie deep beneath the surface. I recommend reading this book
It's amazing..........2004-05-02
how even toilet paper with Bruce Lee's name on it would sell to some people. Take this book for example. In your everyday life, would you consider a 24 y/o an "authority" on anything? Nooooo -so why consider one an authority on a 4000 y/o art? Because he had great pecs and abs and was lucky enough to die in his early thirties, right? The book contains nothing (I repeat NOTHING) that can't be found in "Tao Te Ching", so if you want to read real Taoism philosophy go get that.
In TTOGF, Bruce displays his understanding (or lack thereof) of the aforementioned "Tao Te Ching", Chinese martial arts, the life, the universe and everything in the half-a$$ed way normally associated with youngsters trying to show off their "deep understanding" of profound matters. Pix are scarse and are the ones usually recycled in the other books of the series, although the, ahem, author's "Gung Fu Scrapbook" at the last pages, has to be seen to be believed.
He should had stuck with cha-cha. And, BTW, if you really, really have to buy a book on the MA, consider something written by a real martial artist e.g. Donn F. Draeger. Buying a book on MA written by Bruce Lee is like buying a book on archaeology written by Harrison Ford. Or, maybe more appropriate, Angelina Jolie.
Sheesh...

Customer Reviews:
just wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-31
If you are starting to learn Chinese, this is what you need. Chinese characters are difficult to learn but these flashcards make it a lot easier. You can take some cards with you to review wherever you go and in no time you will realise you know a lot of characters. Each card is full of information: the character (simplified and traditional) ,how to write it, pronounciation in pinyin, meaning, radical, examples, etc. Do not hesitate to buy it: you will not regret your choice.
Great Flash Cards.......2007-08-15
Tuttle's "Chinese in a Flash" cards are superb. As shown in the sample photographs, the cards include both traditional and simplified characters, stroke order, and sample phrases which demonstrate usage. The photos speak for themselves.
It would have been nice if a small card-sized box were included for portability. Thankfully, the flash cards are not too much smaller than gaming cards (e.g. Magic cards), so something like the Ultra-Pro "Deck Box" is a decent fit (for roughly a third of the cards in the set).
One of the best Chinese learning resources I have found........2007-06-08
These cards are almost everything I could ask for in a set of character flashcards. I have been taking Chinese in college for 2 years now and that one of the hardest aspects of learning the language is being able to recall how to write all of the characters that I have learned. I tried to create my own flashcards but eventually found the process too time consuming and gave it up.
These flashcards are compact and provide a clear context for each character through the use of example sentences and vocabulary. Without a clear context, it is almost impossible for me to commit a character to memory. These cards are the next best thing to encountering the character in a real world situation.
The only problem I have with these cards is they seem to be designed for people who are only concerned with being able to recognize characters and not write them. I say this because one side has a giant character printed on it while the other side has the pinyin up in the corner along with a smaller version of the character that is on the front. This means that I have to to hold the pile in such a way that my thumb is over the character above the pinyin. Then I have to keep it covered while I attempt to write the character.
But this is only a small inconvenience and I would still recommend these cards to anyone looking to build their vocabulary and strengthen their reading and writing skills.
Great for beginners........2007-05-09
I am learning Chinese & these flashcards are great! They are a very nice size to carry around, plus they have several different words listed at the bottom of the card that also use the character. They show the simplified & original character. The biggest plus for me is they show you the order in which to write the character (they only show order on the simplified character)! I would highly recommend these cards if you are learning Mandarin Chinese.
Great idea, poor execution.......2007-05-06
Perhaps it's a question of trying to put too much information out, but the cards are very difficult to read due to small font size.

The BBC Radio production of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a delightful two-hour sail on the most fabulous ship in Narnia. Lucy and Edmund, with their dreadful cousin Eustace, get magically pulled into a painting of a ship at sea. That ship is the Dawn Treader, and on board is Caspian, King of Narnia. He and his companions, including Reepicheep, the valiant warrior mouse, are searching for seven lost lords of Narnia, and their voyage will take them to the edge of the world. Their adventures include being captured by slave traders, a much-too-close encounter with a dragon, and visits to many enchanted islands, including the place where dreams come true. The adaptation is faithful to its source, C.S. Lewis's series of Narnia books, which have provided exciting and uplifting tales for generations of children. BBC Radio does wonders with sound effects--the ship creaks in the wind, the sorrowful dragon roars lugubriously--and musical cues and interludes that keep the pacing dynamic. There's also a splendid cast of plummy British voices, making this far more than a book read onto cassette--it's an audio drama, as enjoyable as a trip to the theater. Grownups who buy this tape for their children will want to borrow it for themselves. (Running time: two hours, two cassettes) --Blaise Selby

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The two older children from the other books have been given the arse from Narnia as they are now too old and boring to be allowed back. Different rules for lions, it seems.
Anyway, the two younger are staying with an annoying cousin, and end up on a ship with Caspain, now a king, and a talking rodent.
Ship quest time.
Journey to the utter East.......2007-07-26
'Voyage of the Dawn Treader' is the third novel (in publishing order) of the Narnian Chronicles. It follows on the events of 'Prince Caspian' as Lucy and Edmund are visiting their obnoxious cousin Eustache. A picture of a sailing ship on the wall of Eustache's guest room grows and grows until the children fall into to it, entering Narnia once more. They find themselves on the ship The Dawn Treader, with (King) Caspian and Reepicheep the mouse. Caspian is voyaging east in search of seven lost lords who were driven from Narnia by his evil Uncle Miraz. Reepicheep is looking for no less than Aslan's land- which is reputed to be at the end of the great eastern ocean.
This much better than both 'Prince Caspian' and 'The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe'. Lewis really hit his stride with this one. After this, the rest of the series is uniformally excellent. The children have many adventures such as being captured by slavetraders, encountering a dragon, and even meeting a fallen star. The introduction of Eustache allows Lewis once again to show the redemption of a character, as well as make pointed comments on modern ideas of parenting. Again the Christian themes are very lightly hinted at- they will never again be as overt as in the 'The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe'.
Impossible to rank.......2007-05-13
Which is the best Narnian chronicle? Couldn't begin to choose just one, even if my life depended on it. Each has such a high level of craftsmanship; each has such a broad scope of imagination.
However, one unforgettable scene in THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER must arguably rank as the best of the entire series - when Reepicheep the mouse continues the journey into Aslan's country alone, not with fear but with great longing and tremendous courage.
Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the.......2007-04-09
In the 5th book of the Narnia series, "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" our adventure begins, when Lucy, Edmund and our new friend, Eustace are brought to Narnia and are taken aboard the Dawn Treader. Some familiar faces on the boat include Caspian, Reepicheep and Drinian.
On there quest to the end of the world, or the "Far East" they are looking for the lost friends and lords of Caspian's Dad. But they are slowed down by magicans, darkness, stars, dreams, lilies, dragons and Duffelpods. With, of coarse the help of Aslan, the Lion along the journey.
But will they reach the end of the world? Can they find the lost lords? And what surprise is waiting for Lucy and Edmund at the end of the story? ~It's all coming, but only on the mistical voyage of The Dawn Treader!!!
The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader.......2007-01-27
The book I am reviewing is the Voyage of the Dawn Treader Written by C. S. Lewis.
The book starts off with Edmund, Lucy, and Eustace sitting in a spare room when all of a sudden they are swimming for their lives toward the Dawn Treader. Another surprising twist is that Caspian, Lucy, Edmund, Eustace, and Reepicheep are all capture and taken away as slaves. Thankfully Caspian comes up with a way to save them. Now my favorite part is when the Invisible People capture Lucy and force her to make them visible. Once she saved them the magician revealed himself and aided the weary travelers. Another favorite is when Eustace turns into a dragon. Where they find the Third Lord is on a Dark Island where dreams come true. After they come to Ramandu's Island where the next three lords are found asleep. After stopping for food the Dawn Treader sails on East to the edge of the world. Once they get there Reepicheep, Edmund, Lucy, and Eustace sailed off to the edge of the earth on their own.
This was a wonderful book and I would recommend the entire set of the Chronicles of Narnia. This book is my favorite book of the Chronicles of Narnia, but I recommend for you to read them in order!

The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis, is one of the very few sets of books that should be read three times: in childhood, early adulthood, and late in life. In brief, four children travel repeatedly to a world in which they are far more than mere children and everything is far more than it seems. Richly told, populated with fascinating characters, perfectly realized in detail of world and pacing of plot, and profoundly allegorical, the story is infused throughout with the timeless issues of good and evil, faith and hope. This boxed set edition includes all seven volumes.

Collection includes all seven novels in the series.

Nice box. Paperbacks are cheap productions but it is an ok set for the price.
The Real Fantasy.......2007-08-25
Well, usually I despise the kind of fantasy with talking animals and little kids hopping around, as the talking animals are a consequence of the author's inability to paint realistic humans, and the little kids a clear admission that the story is too simple to be appreciated by anyone with more critical sense of a kid.I also hate book "with a moral", they are stiff and feel "constructed" and artificial. This book is an exception in all senses. It's masterfully written, with a class and style the only the greatest writers possess. Characters are alive and breathing, both the humans and the animals, and merge beautifully, and the Christian inspiration flows silently, discreetly and subterraneanly almost all the time, with a class and reserve that reminds of the only Master. A precious , captivating , charming book that would be a real shame to miss if you have not already read it! And don't be discouraged by the horrible movie they made out of it. It had its usefulness for me, as I didn't even know this book existed until I heard about the movie, but luckily I expected the book to outclass that wretched excuse for a movie they did, and, man was I right!
So if you are up for a book that will bring you in a wonderful, colorful, exciting and enriching adventure hurry and get this book, and , as others have said, take care to read it in the original order on which it was written, not the "chronological Narnian order". Some publishers have been stupid enough to publish the various tales in this latter order which spoils most of the surprise and suspense.
The order in which you should read it is:
1) The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, 2) Prince Caspian, 3)The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, 4) The Silver Chair, 5) The Horse and His Boy, 6) The Magician's Nephew, and 7) The Last Battle
The only shadow on this masterpiece is the superficial and ill-chosen choice of the Narnians villains and enemies as people who are way too reminiscent (you could say copied) from our world stereotypical muslim people. besides being superficial and offensive, it also spoils the beauty of the tale with his gross oversimplification and stink of prejudice, ignorance and lack of fantasy. It's sad to see how the dark sides of religion , prejudice, closure, and lack of tolerance pollute not only our everyday life but even a literature masterpiece. Also, I would consider this book as made by the first 6 tales, the last one "The Last Battle" is hugely inferior to the other six, just a quick closure that lacks structure, coherence and , well, "magic".
Especially painful since it attempts to deal with the core of religion.. want to know what I mean by this? Go read the book!
