Book Description
Since the general recognition of the Archaebacteria, research into the evolution, metabolism, molecular biology and ecological roles of these fastidious anaerobes has proceeded at an ever-increasing pace. All possess a very novel biochemistry and many exploit unique ecological niches. Methanogens, which convert one-and-two carbon compounds into the important atmospheric gas methane, are the largest group among the Archaebacteria. Of all microbial groups, methanogens provide perhaps the best opportunity to study evolution because of their phyologenetic diversity and unique biochemistry. Today, the analysis of methanogens is at a threshold. Molecular-biological studies of these microorganisms are revealing more and more processes unique to this group, and in turn, studies of methanogens are providing new perspectives to the broader fields of biochemistry and molecular biology. This volume is the first book to be published on methanogenesis, and it will provide the reader with a comprehensive view of the field and point to future trends.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2005-04-22
This book is another great in the series of A Baffled Parent's Guide. These books are thorough and complete - a coach's bible, especially a new coach. The book covers everything from basics of the game to working with the children and dealing with the parents. I highly recommend books from this series.
good book for beginning coaches.......2002-06-23
I have yet to coach a girls' softball team, but I am really interested in doing it. This book has some great advice on how to handle beginner players and their parents. The thing about this book that I found great was that it told you some characteristics to look for when selecting a pitcher, something that I would not have had a clue about doing. Highly recommended.
Excellent for beginner or experienced coach.......2002-05-11
This is an AMAZING book! Even if you have never coached, played, or even heard of softball, it helps you out. It breaks every aspect of the game down and puts it in simple terms so you can explain it to your team. It gives you practice advice and schedules as well as drills you can use for team members to improve, or establish, softball skills. It also gives you advice on how to become the best coach, dealing with gender issues and how to handle difficult parents. This book is a MUST for EVERY coach!
Excellent Coaching Book for New Coaches.......2001-04-28
I am not a parent but nonetheless, this book is excellent! This book gets right down to the heart of coaching. It tells you step by step how to teach someone how to throw, catch, pitch, hit and play every position. It also tells you what type of girl would be good for positions of pitchers and catchers which is important since most girls at this age have no experience in many positions. The drills have diagrams and there is glossary in the back to help with the terminology. There are not that many good softball coaching books (believe me I've looked), so grab this one!
Book Description
The quickest way to become an experienced coach.
You thought you were going to sign your kid up for the local youth league. Now, here you are, a newly appointed coach. Part of the successful Baffled Parent's series, Coaching Youth Baseball has everything you need to manage, motivate, and encourage an eight to twelve -year-old ball team.
Written by a four-time New England Coach of the Year, it shows novice coaches exactly how to go about building skills, developing teamwork and sportsmanship, and creating an experience that both kids and coach enjoy.
Bill Thurston leaves no question unanswered. He addresses both broad organizational issues like how to get uniforms or arrange for practice time and more focused specifics like what to do at the first practice. The Baffled Parents Guide is the ultimate coaching guide for the uninformed.
Customer Reviews:
Great book on Coaching youth sports.......2006-06-02
This entire series is great for beginning to intemediate coaches. Plenty of great ideas to try on your team.
Worked for me.......2004-09-11
I bought this book after I had volunteered to coach a Pinto League (7-8 yr old) team that my son was on. This book provided a good starting point for getting organized and creating a good practice worksheet. Sound baseball fundamentals, being organized and having fun in a supportaive environment lead to a successful and happy Little League experience.
Good Starter Book.......2002-03-02
A Well Organized book, as a rookie coach last season, it gave me what I needed to know. I particularly liked the overview of safety presented up front -- too many people take this for granted and stupid injuries can result.
Be Advised though that the rest of the Baffled Parents Series doesn't necessarily live up to the standard set by this book - I found the Basketball book very average.
Baffled No More!.......2000-07-08
This was the first "Coaching" book I have purchased. The book provides excellent insight into what is truly involved in coaching a youth baseball team. The practice planner section was a big help in conducting an organized and effectice practice. I highly recommend this book to beginning coached like myself or seasoned veterans.
Book Description
Use Youth Baseball Drills to develop players' understanding, skills, and love for the game. The activities presented will help you make each practice more educational and fun.
This handy coaching tool contains a variety of both tried-and-true and innovative drills that build on and reinforce your technique and tactic instruction of 7- to 12-year-olds. Drills are easily located by topic in the seven chapters, and they progress in difficulty so that you can choose the most appropriate ones for your players' abilities in each facet of the game. And, because attention spans are short at those ages, each drill is designed to maximize the number of players involved on the field.
Helpful tips throughout the book make on-field practice, organization, and time management much easier. Youth Baseball Drills is your guide to fun, productive practices so that your players get the best possible experience playing the sport.
Customer Reviews:
A "must- have" for the beginning coach and old hands too.......2006-04-20
The name says it all. Seriously though, if you want a drill to run, be it for a catcher, infielder, outfielder, pitcher, batter, base runner, you name it, the drill is in here. Not just one drill either, but many for each position. Situational drills such as how to call time out after sliding into a base are also included. Detailed descriptions on what equipment is needed for each drill, the number of players for the drill, number of coaches and/or parents for the drill, the skills learned for that drill, and related drills. This is one of the best coaches aids I have ever seen. Having fun while practicing is a must, for the players and the coaches. Learning to play baseball while having fun helps the players to remember what to do during the game.
Youth Baseball Drills.......2005-03-09
Great book for new coaches expecially for the younger player. I am in my second year of coaching 6 & 7 year old girls and I wish that I had the book last year. Mr Schupak knowledge and approach to teaching a well run practice is excelent. I would also recommend his "59 minute practice" dvd/video. With these two items and a bucket of ball you will be set for a fun season for all.
Variety in practice.......2005-03-01
I think this would be great, especially for young coaches or coaches working with the very young, "minor" or "farm" teams. Drills are basic with great variety to keep interest during practice.

Baseball Skills & Drills: American Baseball Coaches Association.......2007-01-30
Purchased for my husband. He said that the book gave him more insight in to the basic fundamentals and explains the different positions more indepth. He recommends this book for any little league coach.

Customer Reviews:
Finest How To Baseball book for Beginners ever written.......2007-04-26
From Basic Fundamentals to building useable skills, this book outlines in a simple constructive fashion "how to make youngsters better ballplayers". The drill sections provide practice methods to teach budding little leaguers the foundations for future success.
There have been many books that have attempted to simplify teaching this wonderful game, but this book is the first one that actually accomplishes the task, and puts it in a repeatable, useable format.
Thank you for making my job as a coach and instructor easier!
Step by Step.......2007-04-07
This is a great book for a complete step by step approach to coaching baseball! Very useful for coaches and parents!!
great for new coaches; maybe even better for experienced coaches.......2007-03-29
There certainly is a need for GOOD how-to youth coaching books, and this is one of them. The book is well written and organized with an easy-to-follow format and lots of photos and diagrams. A new coach can't go wrong in following the user-friendly book to cover all the basics of baseball.
But perhaps more important is the emphasis on YOUTH and dealing with kids, a skill that does not come automatically to everyone involved with youth sports. In other words, the book helps to shape a coach's attitude as much as how to improve skills in young players. Ideally, the coach learns and grows throughout the season as well as the kids.
It seems to me that this book is equally valuable to experienced coaches, in helping them to get the most out of all their players, not just the most talented. Many coaches come to youth sports as successful athletes themselves, and sometimes do not recognize what it takes to bring along kids who may be having difficulties. If the point is to keep more players playing, improving, and having a good time, here's a way to strengthen a team as well as individual players.
A great investment toward a good season.
Chock-full of useful, easy-to-follow information.......2007-03-29
This book is very detailed and organized yet easy to follow. You could have never coached baseball before and be prepared by the time you finish this book.
If you want to improve your players and Win -You need this book!.......2007-03-28
Finally, an easy to read book for baseball coaches. This book is jammed packed with great ideas to use with my all my team members.
I'm new to coaching Little League and many of the excellent insider tips helped improve my confidence and coach my players in an easy fun way... And baseball should be fun.
If you want to win the league championship or you're hunting for new ideas to improve your players, you need this terrific book!

Introducing Kaplan's SAT Vocabulary Flip-O-Matic!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent source of study!.......2003-10-22
This book does exactly what was intended - it gives a pretty complete list of common vocab words seen on the SATs. I purchased this book a week before my PSAT test. Unfortunately, it arrived in the mail the very afternoon AFTER I had taken my test, but when I flipped through the book, I realized that all of the vocab words I was not sure about on the PSAT were in the book! If I had just been a bit more prepared and bought this book earlier, I'm sure I would have gotten those questions right. Other books may give you a list of words, but the list is either incomplete (and you spend forever on words that aren't even on the test) or the definitions are too long and hard to remember. This book is prime SAT material. It was too late for me this time, but, oh well, at least I know this book will help me when it comes to the actual SATs in March. I recommend this book to anyone who's willing to spend a few weeks ahead of time studying up on vocab. A lesson to all: don't procrastinate!
Efficient way to learn SAT words on the go.......2003-04-27
I was pleasantly surprised when I found this book at a local bookstore. It's small, efficient, and extremely easy to quiz yourself with. The list of words not only reviews frequently-appearing SAT words, but also words that are easily confused (such as the verb consummate and the adj. consummate). The only qualm I have with this book is the lack of a pronunciation guide, but a quick search in a dictionary resolves this if you have any doubts.
Can You Read Upside Down?.......2003-03-06
Here's how it works: On the top half of the first page is 'abase.' Just the word. Below it, upside down, is a short definition for 'zealot' and a sentence using it in context. On the other side is the opposite: a definition for 'abase' and the word 'zealot', upside down. That's it.
For the student who needs a convenient way to learn words (in this case 500), without getting to deep into the pronunciation and etymology, this is a good choice.
Unlike many of the guides by Barron's, Peterson and the Princeton Review, this Kaplan book has the advantage of being small. The flashcard-style is handy for self-quizzing. There is no need to cover up words, or to laboriously write out lists.
These aren't the obscure words meant for Scrabble and crossword puzzle champs. These are the words which have historically meant something to the preparers of SAT.
A short selection of roots is provided as well, but it is the full words which makes it a worthy purchase, to augment a more complete study of SAT vocabulary.
Anthony Trendl
editor, HungarianBookstore.com
Okay, if you don't feel like making notecards.......2002-12-09
This book is essentially no more than a flipbook of notecards. On one side of a page is the word, on the opposite side is the definition and a sample sentence. On the corner of each page is a gray triangle that you're supposed to fold to mark that you have learned the word. This is a good idea, especially if you're too lazy to make your own notecards. However, I question some of the words they put on the book that seem like they never will be on the SAT. Also, the words in the book are bascially the same as the word lists found in the back of their SAT verbal book.

A 'must read' for all bird lovers .......2004-08-24
I can't say enough good things about this uplifting book and highly recommend it to anyone "in tune" with our captivating feathered friends. An entertaining read from start to finish, each chapter encompasses a true life experience connecting it spiritually to the bird featured in that chapter. Mockingbirds, cardinals, wrens and bluebirds are a sample of the songsters the author has chosen, comparing their habits and personalities to everyday situations--the end resulting in a renewal of our faith, hope and love. Awesome!

Book Description
Learning to accept help can be the hardest lesson of all.
Mercy doesn’t have your average family, but it’s the only one she’s ever known. She, her mother Pearl, and her aunt Moo move from one falling-down rental house to another. Somehow they’ve always managed to get by, but lately things seem to be spinning out of control. Why is Pearl growing smaller, saying less and less as she retreats to the security of her bedroom? Why is her aunt growing larger and noisier as she reads fortunes in teacups and tarot cards and palms? And while Mercy tries to keep up at school and with her job, she lives in fear of the day Barry, Moo’s boyfriend, comes back to live with them all.
Customer Reviews:
"Birds" flies.......2004-01-29
"Mercy's Birds" is a rare book -- a book that is actually quite like real life, without being depressing or unrealistic. It's a vivid, poetic, bittersweet look at things like clinical depression, poverty, child abuse, and Linda Holeman does a wonderful job of bringing them to life.
Mercy lives with her mother Pearl and her Aunt Moo, both impoverished and eking out a meager living with the help of Moo's boyfriend Barry (known as B), who is off in Indonesia. One day, Mercy chops off her blonde hair and dyes it black. It's only one of the ways she is trying to harden herself against the ever-worsening conditions of her life: Her mother's sinking depression, her aunt's blossoming alcoholism, and B's sexual advances (and threats if she tells on him).
At her new school, Mercy has few friends, even though a girl called Andrea is trying to befriend her. The only people she really communicates with is her Italian-American boss, Vince, and the kindly Mamma Gio. But Mercy's already-difficult life takes a sharp downward turn when Pearl overdoses on pills, and B announces that he's returning.
Things are bad when "Mercy's Birds" starts, and they only improve near the end. Even then, it's not improvements that defy belief. Rather, it's about a fractured, battered family growing back together, and gaining a strong little circle of friends. There's no perky "happily ever after," but things are winding up to become happier and brighter.
Holeman's writing is very vivid, and full of symbolism (such as the bright mask that Mercy creates, or her stiff black hair). She doesn't milk tragedy or sadness for sympathy, and the background she makes for each character is very realistic. And even though the world Mercy lives in is in some ways a very dark place, Holeman reminds us that dreams can still come true.
Mercy is not your typical troubled teen. As we see, her angst and anger are a way of coping with the very real problems of her life, especially problems she can't deal with alone. Her mom is virtually a nonentity, and Aunt Moo is at least trying to make an impression, even if she doesn't quite know how. Good supporting characters are the twinkly-eyed Italian widow Mama Gio and her son Vince.
"Mercy's Birds" is a unique book, and not one just for young adults. Beautiful, bittersweet, and will linger in your mind after you finish it. Highly recommended.
Touched my life..............2002-11-15
"Nothing - not bird claws, and not fingers, especially not B's fingers - would
ever tangle themselves in my hair again, scaring me, holding me prisoner." Mercy
Donnelly has just started a new high school at the end of October, and her fellow grade
10 classmates are reluctant to accept her dark wardrobe and short, choppy jet-black hair.
Mercy rarely lets anyone get close to her, and isolates herself from the world. To make
matters worse, her life at home is no better. Her mother, Pearl, is slowly falling into a
deep depression, and most of her time is spent lying awake on her bed, staring at her
plain walls and closed curtains that haven't been opened in months. Mercy's aunt,
Maureen (whom Mercy has always called "Moo"), has just chosen a new boyfriend to
bring into their home. His real name hasn't yet been announced, for Mercy and Pearl
always refer to him as "B". B is away for work at the moment, and while he is away,
Mercy is trying to sum up the courage to tell Moo or Pearl about what he's been saying to
her, and doing to her when they're alone. However, it's hard for her to do this because
Pearl doesn't have a job and the money that Moo and Mercy make doesn't add up to
enough to support them, so B's monthly checks are what they've been living on.
However, Mercy knows it's in her best interest to stand up for herself and what she
knows is the right thing to do.
Mercy's life finally takes a small turn for the better when she makes a new friend
at school, Andrea. Andrea is an outgoing, yet not overly interesting person, but is a great
help for Mercy to have around. Also, Mercy's routine of working at the local flower shop
is relaxing and therapeutic for her, and helps to take her stress off. She also finds hope
through the storeowner, Vince, and his mother whom everyone calls "Mamma Gio." Yet
suddenly, everyone is abruptly shaken and woken up with a jolt when Pearl overdoses on
a bottle of painkillers and winds up in a psychiatric ward of a hospital nearby. Mercy and
Moo are forced to deal with the feelings and situations that arise because of this startling
news.
This is one of the novels that I can relate to the closest out of the ones I've read
before. Mercy and I have a lot in common, and I feel like I'm reading a novel about
myself in some ways. I wouldn't recommend this novel to everyone, because I think that
it only applies to certain personality types. I also wouldn't recommend it to everyone
because I feel like I'd be sharing things with people that I just want to be my own. I know
that that sounds extremely selfish, but there are certain exceptions to novels that are this
touching. Yet at the same time, I want to recommend this novel to everyone, hoping that
they can too get as much out of it as I did. However, this book has been really inspiring
and helpful to me, and will hopefully help others the same way that it has helped me.

Mercy's Birds rings with truth........2000-03-27
Mercy's Birds, by Linda Holeman, is an excellent book. Readers of Judy Blume and other so called "realistic Young Adult fiction" will appreciate Holeman's realistic portrayl of Mercy, a bright young lady with some very serious problems. 15-yr-old Mercy has chosen to wear nothing but black, in response to her messed-up home life and other factors. Her teen angst is real; Mercy is facing some very serious problems. There is no sugar coating here - everyone in Mercy's world is messed up, and there are no pat answers. What makes this book unique and wonderful is the insightful way that Mercy views her world and analyzes her problems. Holeman manages to give us a book in which the characters face serious and sad problems, yet with an uplifting ending. The moral of this story is that being true to yourself is the most important thing one can do, no matter what scary things one is facing. I highly reccomend this book for young adults, but also for those who work with young adults, troubled or otherwise. This book will make you remember what it's like to be 15.
