Book Description
Alaska, The Last Frontier, is also the last great home range of the grizzly bear. With camera and journal in hand, Jim Cole has traveled the great bear's country for nearly three decades.
"Jim has more than magnfiicent photographs...; he has a deep personal attachment and knowledge of his subjects. Through his eyes, readers live a bear's life, in all its richness, hardships, and triumphs. Jim captures the beauty that exists in the world of the bear, and he shares it with us." ---From the Foreword, by Larry Aumiller

Sorry Jim.......2007-09-19
As a former realtor, Mr. Cole owes the natural world a large debt, and believes he is doing good work. My opinion, based upon a life lived in the northern rockies, is that bears NEVER benefit from interactions with humans. The natural world is not there for us to enjoy, or understand, or study - it is simply there. If you are looking for a better understanding of bears, read Steve Herreros book and if you like pretty pictures, check out any of the other authors online who do not routinely place bears at risk by forcing encounters.
Jim Cole, Insight into the Heart of the Man.......2007-06-30
As the wife of Jim Cole, I can tell you that he has dedicated three (3) decades of his life to the study of Grizzly Bears in their natural habitats. His books took three (3) years to write and spotlight bear families from the lower 48 and Alaska which he has followed for years. Jim gave up a lucrative real estate career to pursue his wildlife passion and has made many sacrifices along the way. As a result of the most recent attack on May 23rd, 2007, Jim is now permanently blind in one eye. Ironically, Jim never considered himself to be a professional photographer. He counts himself as a Grizzly Bear Educator and performs original songs about bears to a wide range of audiences. Jim's books represent his life's work and offer useful insight into the cunning versatility of the great bear. As of the writing of this review, Jim has never been banned from any national park nor have his actions resulted in the death of any bruin. Simply stated, Jim believes these creatures to be the most intelligent and impressive animals on Planet Earth! Yes, his time spent in the backcountry is quite non-traditional; but Jim always was a rugged individualist.
Mauled again - killing bears to enrich himself.......2007-06-12
Jim Cole has been ticketed and banned at many National Parks for willing breaking the law and endangering, not only his life, but the lives of the bears. He was recently mauled at Yellowstone and his actions most likely will result in the death of the bear as he pursued and harrassed a mother bear protecting her cubs. We were at Yellowstone during the incident and the rangers said that the photos they found in his camera did not line up with the tale he told.
This is his second mauling because he will risk the life of the bear just to get his money shot. If you are considering buying his books because you love bears, be aware that man is not a advocate for bears but rather will do things that result in their being shot in order to enrich himself.
harassing bears?.......2005-03-26
Cole is in the news for all the wrong reasons: "Photographer, bear advocate cited for getting too close to bruins," by Scott McMillion, Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 3/25/05. Cole has been cited for harassing bear in Yellowstone National Park. He hasn't had his day in court yet, but you've got to wonder. It's easy to get close-up photos of grizzly/brown bears at designated (and well-managed) bear viewing areas in Alaska and Canada. To get publishable photos of grizzly bears in Yellowstone or Glacier, you've got to get so close you put yourself in danger and run the risk of driving the bears away from food they need or a place they want to be. Grizzlies are a threatened species in the lower 48 states. Why bother them when you can get photographs of grizzlies in Alaska without stressing the bears? What kind of bear advocate would do that?
One with nature.......2004-12-11
Jim Cole is a talented photographer and writer. With a keen sense of observation Cole documents in a stunning way with pictures and word his observation of the grizzlies that roam our great National Parks. Together with his book on Grizzlies in Alaska the reader can gain an indepth and personal insight into the lives of these magnificent animals.

Customer Reviews:
Gripping and informative read.......2007-06-06
Mr. Pastore writes with a style that both informs and draws you in. The race sequences play out with drama and tension. I loved this book, and recommend it to anyone interested in maritime history, racing, shipbuilding, or early 20th century history.
I found the depth of the character studies especially entertaining, and I finished it feeling like I personally knew Messr's Herreshoff, Barr, and Lipton.
From the shores of Bristol, RI.......2005-10-24
Growing up in RI made this book a very special read. Passing the museum on a daily basis, but never knowing the story behind the ships and their designers always made me feel like I was slacking in my duties. The book answered every question I could have had from a personal and engineering standpoint. If you are an engineer or enjoy Non-fiction, defintiely pick up Temple to the Wind.
A great read!.......2005-10-19
Pastore takes you on a journey through history and makes Herreshoff come alive. This book is an amazing account of Herreshoff's travails while designing Reliance. I am basically a sailor wanna-be and was delighted to feel much closer to the excitement of the yachting world years ago- when the stakes were very high. Pastore's devotion to the subject is evident and his enthusiasm for the race is contagious! Truly a great read.
Sit back and enjoy.......2005-10-17
If you are looking for a great non-fiction read, pick up A Temple to the Wind by Christopher Pastore. I am a sailor, but by no means a die-hard. I have never raced, and am ashamed to say had never heard of Nathaniel Herreshoff, but I found myself engrossed in this book. The book is well researched. The biographical facts surrounding the lives of three people, Sir Thomas Lipton,..yes, the name familiar with all of us tea drinkers, Nathaniel Herreshoff and Captain Charlie Barr are cleverly disguised so they don't read as facts, but as stories of human lives. You suffer from their failures and cheer for their successes. Forget watching the America's Cup on television. If you want excitement, follow the races covered in Pastore's book. His words beat the visual version. I feel like I am an informed viewer now. I understand the history behind the race, and have a new interest in the race requirements because the book deals with Herreshoff's brilliant innovations in naval architecture. I found myself rooting for Herreshoff's boat in each of the races, hoping the innovations would pay off. The suspense keeps you reading.
A riveting account of the Reliance story.......2005-10-15
Temple to the wind is a riveting account of the Reliance story. I would also put it right up there with Seabiscuit and In the Heart of the Sea. The book is expertly written and extremely well researched. I found the biographical material about Herreshoff, Barr and Lipton very interesting. I especially enjoyed the fast paced play by play action of the races between Reliance and Shamrock III. I highly recommend Temple to the Wind.
Book Description
The beauty of the Arabic language, both spoken and written--and the richness of the Arabic-speaking world, its history and culture--has recently become of increasing importance and a matter of revelation for the English-speaking world. It is essential as this new century unfolds, that understanding develops between nations--and language is the magic key.
The Al-Kitaab Arabic language program is among the English-speaking world's most widely used Arabic language learning texts. Alif Baa with DVDs: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds is the first part of the Al-Kitaab program. This revised, second edition contains updated readings, new and revised exercises, and completely new audio/video materials on two DVDs bound into each volume.
In teaching the sounds and letters of Arabic, Alif Baa provides a variety of exercises aimed at developing the crucial nascent skills of reading, listening, writing, speaking, and cultural understanding. In conjunction with learning how to read and write the alphabet, Alif Baa introduces about 150 basic vocabulary words, including conventional forms of politeness and social greetings.
Standard Arabic vocabulary is distributed throughout the book, enhanced by the visual and audio materials on the DVDs and implemented in practical exercises. It introduces a range of Arabic from colloquial to standard in authentic contexts, including social greetings in dialogues that take place in an Egyptian context, the most widely-used and understood Arabic dialect.
Finally, Alif Baa includes capsules on Arab culture as well as an English-Arabic glossary. Alif Baa provides the essential first twenty contact hours of instruction that are the foundation for the rest of the Al-Kitaab language program.
Customer Reviews:
excellent.......2007-09-26
I love the book, and the DVDs are incredibly helpful. An excellent buy for anyone who wants to learn Arabic.
~*~*Totally Awesome!!*~*~.......2007-09-24
The book I purchased was brand new so of course it was in perfect condition. The book also contained DVDs as part of the lesson. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn Arabic because it provides you with listening material for you to practice with and perfect your pronunciation.
Great starting point for students of Arabic.......2007-09-17
Alif Baa text and DVDs provide excellent written, visual and audio descriptions of all the letters, many of which are indistinguishable to the native English speaker. Limited vocabulary and dialogues are included to keep the focus on learning the letters as spoken and as written.
Excellent Introduction to the Alphabet. .......2007-09-13
To is by far the best package for learning the arabic script/alphabet. If you can only afford one thing, I would definitely buy this. You may find other books more helpful but the addition of the DVD makes this indispensable.
There are a few reasons why this book is superior to other Arabic books that attempt to teach the script. However there is one that stands out in my mind.
The teaching of arabic letters as unique sounds apart from the English alphabet and the exact position of the tongue in the mouth, throat constriction, level of aspiration, and great tips for practicing foreign sounds and exercises.
When speaking a language, I pride myself on the accurate pronunciation of it. Once past the conversation level, pronunciation of the language is my priority and I believe that Alif Baa does an excellent, superb job of this. Especially clearing up the tricky difference between Thaa and Dhaa. I knew of the difference, but could not separate it in speech. Now I do it with much greater accuracy.
I recommend this book whole heartedly.
Addendum: I was reading the reviews and someone said it assumed that you had a teacher. This is true and not true at the same time. MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE ANSWER KEY, WHICH IS ONLY $5 EVEN BEFORE YOU BUY THIS BOOK. When you buy this answer key, this becomes the best way to teaching yourself Arabic script.
Did it for me! ... From "romanization" to actual Arabic!.......2007-07-30
This work provided the structure in a comfortable format for me to make the difficult transition from Arabic, phonetically approximated in English letters, to sounding and writing actual Arabic. There are more concise statements of the rules, but this is an actual "work-book" with space to fill in exercises as you progress. Brustad sets a good pace - ten lessons each taking about 2 hours apiece to complete. Sprinkled throughout are elements of Arabic culture ~ and as a bonus you will learn 100+ real words in Arabic as you master the letters and sounds. The DVD's are helpful as you watch the physical act of forming the letters in script and training your speech muscles to make the 9 or 10 sounds Arabic uses that English does not. I did lessons 1-5 without the Answer Key: and there were just enough times I wondered "Have I got that right?" that I ordered it. If you do not have a teacher (I do not) I would suggest buying the Answer Key up front. Remember when you first discovered you could "read English"? I had the same experience - in Arabic - after finishing Alif Baa!

It's the standard for a reason.......2007-08-05
Alif Baa is SO much better than the later "Al-Kitaab" books in this series. If you want to learn the Arabic script, buy this and do the drills (then turn elsewhere for the language).
I love Alif Baa.......2007-08-03
My only gripe is that I bought the book in the store and had to buy the answer key online. The answer key should be included with the book in store as well or INCLUDED in the damn book.
This is the answer key to an AWESOME product.......2007-04-09
This is the answer key. It is very useful if you want to check your work and it isn't very expensive.
Below is my review for the Alif Baa: Introduction to Letters and Sounds set (just to help you while you are looking).
This is the answer key to a product that is AWESOME! The explanations are very clear. The listening exercises give students exposure to colloquial Egyptian Arabic. The listening exercises also help the learner to distinguish between letter sounds and reinforce their letter sound pronunciation.
You really should buy this if you are learning Arabic. It is that useful!
Alright for what it is.......2007-01-11
Fine answer key. Very Useful but not completely necessary for study in Alif Baa.
Middle Aged College Arabic Student.......2005-10-07
We meet twice a week at night. No contact with the Teacher in between. So the answer key lets me know how I'm doing with the assignments. You could cheat and just write in the answers but you'd pay dearly for it during quizzes, exams or trips to the board during class. Using this has kept me on track and helped identify things I need to do again - and again.
Book Description
What began as a biography of George Millay, the "Father of the Waterpark Industry," ended up being both the intriguing life story of a great and successful risk-taker AND the first-ever, in-depth look at the creation of two theme park genres which today entertain more than 100 million people a year, worldwide.
KEY FEATURES
1 - First book ever written about George Millay. He has waited until he felt comfortable "telling it all." And tell it all, he did. Friends and family who have read the manuscript have commented they learned new things about a man they have known for years. He has a reputation for not wanting to talk personally about himself or his family.
2 - George Millay's personal story is one of a risk-taker and is an excellent business primer on how calculated and creative risk taking and deal making can pay off.
3 - This is the first in-depth look at the creation and the early history of the SeaWorld parks, now owned by Anheuser-Busch; Magic Mountain, now owned by Six Flags; and the Wet'n Wild parks, now owned by Universal and by Palace Entertainment. The book chronicles the deals, the people, and the events that shaped these parks - from concept through construction and the early years of operation.
Customer Reviews:
A fitting tribute to a theme park pioneer.......2007-01-04
George Millay died on February 6, 2006 but his legacy lives on. Millions have visited Sea World and Wet and Wild. What sparked these two theme parks was George's experiences in the restaurant business. You'll have to read the book to see how he made the leap.
The book describes how George went to various them parks to get ideas, such as the wave generation machine for Wet and Wild.
Sea World was the first to use an ozone purification system. When the Marine Mammal Protection Act was enacted in 1972, Sea World started a captive breeding program to replenish its stock of animals.
George was a visionary and a problem solver; however, even these were not enough. Sometimes he had to depend on luck. On more than one occasion, George came to the brink of financial disaster.
Once I picked up the book, I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended reading even it you're not considering opening a theme park.
He beats Trump as a risk taker and deal maker. Fun book!.......2004-10-09
This book reveals how he created Sea World, Wet'N Wild and Magic Mountain. What a deal maker and career breaker. It was a wild ride. Hilarious tales of boom, bust and triumph. Read about the peacock's infamous flight. Twists and turns follow George building two aquatic empires. I woke my wife up from laughing so hard while reading it in bed. I couldn't put it down. Get the story from the ultimate insider of amusement parks.
George Millay launched two successful amusement industries almost single-handedly: Marine-life Parks and Water Slide Parks. He seems to have made a bigger splash than Shamu. Millions still are entertained in the wake of his creations: Sea Worlds, Wet `n Wilds and Magic Mountain. Wave Maker is a big splash!
