Book Description
This is the first book in English to offer a full account of the natural history of Lapland, a broad region that encompasses parts of Russia, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The book includes an overview of the region and its flora and fauna, its biogeography, and a history of human impact from the visitation of the first naturalists to the pollution, climate change, and conservation efforts taking place today.
Separate chapters examine each of the six main types of habitat in Lapland: boreal forests, forest peatlands, lakes and rivers, coastlands, tundra, and modified/human-influenced areas. Emphasis is placed on characteristic birds and animals and distinctive plant communities or those of particular botanical interest that visitors are likely to encounter. An account of various plant and animal species is provided, along with geographical and ecological information.
Filling a gap in our knowledge of the wildlife and plant life of this fascinating region, the book presents current and comprehensive information that natural historians as well as travelers will appreciate. Over 250 color and black-and-white illustrations and photographs enhance the volume.

Russian Lapland, a region of amazing contrasts. Here lies the last true wilderness of Europe, a rich and pristine ecosystem teeming with bird and animal life. But here too lie the dark, satanic mills of the former Soviet Union and the rotting remnants of nuclear submarines. Running with Reindeer is the first account in over a century to describe life in this harsh but beautiful land. Living among remote reindeer-herding and hunting families, Roger Took spends a decade following the lives and traditions of the indigenous Lapps, or Saami. He meets pioneering villagers descended from medieval Novgorod fur-traders who are now learning to cope with the new economy, and the men and women originally forced north to mine Russian Lapland's fabulous mineral wealth but are now unemployed and stranded. Avoiding the still vigilant security services, he explores the naval bases where nuclear-powered submarines are lying dangerously neglected. His encounters with the land and its inhabitants are dramatic and comical as well as emotionally disturbing and physically dangerous. Moving between the lines of the official histories, coping with arduous Arctic conditions, he writes compellingly, offering a vivid account of a unique part of Europe.

Fantastic peek into a relatively unknown area of Russia!.......2007-04-01
Who frequently tresspasses into closed military zones in Russia - sometimes for the purpose of viewing the wildlife and wilderness, other times for the purpose of viewing closed military and nuclear facilities? Roger Took, that's who. I'm certainly glad that he did, as it allowed for the creation of the fabulous book that is Running With Reindeer... but seriously, the man's got to be a tad nutty. I've done my share of crazy things in Russia, but did I ever sneak into any closed military zones? No. However, I suppose whether or not Took's actions have a bearing on his sanity doesn't really affect the outcome here, which was his creation of a stellar book.
Running With Reindeer chronicles Took's adventures in the Kola Peninsula, a frigid bit of land in the northwest corner of Russia, over the course of a decade. Took interacts with the remnants of the native Saami (Lapp) and Komi tribes. Took addresses in detail their force relocation during collectivization, and the impact it had on their formerly nomadic lives. He traces the influx and impact of ethnic-Russian settlers in Tsarist and Soviet times - and the effects of their post-Soviet exodus from Kola. He examines the Allied invasion of Russia at the end of WWI (this chapter is actually one of best accounts of this occurrence that I have read; most historians have a tendency to gloss over this for some reason). Took addresses the enormous problem of pollution in the once pristine Kola Peninsula and its impact on the neighboring countries of Finland and Norway. He also spends a significant amount of time discussing the environmental and geopolitical impact of the decay of Russia's Northern (nuclear) Fleet. Apparently, the Kola Peninsula is full of nuclear products and biproducts just ripe for the taking - which is quite distressing given the current fears over what would happen should nuclear materials fall into the wrong hands.
All in all, this book was fabulous. It provided an excellent glimpse into the lives and histories of the people of the Kola Peninsula, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Russia. My only complaint with the book was that I wish there had been more photographs!
Into Europe's "Last True Wilderness".......2004-06-16
Touted as Europe's "last true wilderness", Russian Lapland (which goes by a number of names, including the Kola Peninsula and Murmansk Region) lies mostly north of the Arctic Circle and is generally unknown to the West. This combination of undeveloped wilderness and mystery proved to be an irresistible destination for British art historian and fisherman Took, who made a number of trips there during the early to late 1990s. This book is the result of these trips he took to the region as well as a capable synthesis of the literature available on its inhabitants. It follows no distinct narrative pattern, hopscotching around in time and subject matter, as Took weaves his own travel narrative in with the history of the place.
Although a glance at a map might lead one to think otherwise, this is no arctic tale. Due to a surprisingly beneficent gulf stream, the climate is much more temperate than one might expect. Which is why a great deal of Took's travel involved backpacks, camping, and industrious plodding through wildernessónot to mention decrepit planes, trains, and automobiles, and the odd helicopter or ex-Army tracked vehicle. Indeed, despite the title, he actually spends very little time with reindeer herders, as most of his visits involve trekking to remote villages and hanging out with the locals. As Took recounts, the traditional nomadic reindeer herding culture underwent profound system shocks under Soviet rule, when the Saami (the correct term for Laps) were forced to settle and their herds were collectivized. The parallels to the American conquest of Native American tribes all too striking, right down to the forced education of Saami children at boarding schools where they would be beaten if they used their native tongue. And just as in many Native American communities, modern Saami settlements have extremely high rates of alcoholism. His encounters and friendships with these native fishermen and foresters is engrossing, especially when he delves into the issue of fishing rights, which are tightly regulated. There's a very illuminating chapter on the establishment of luxury fishing camps for wealthy Westerners.
Took's presentation of the area's history is quite fascinating as well, and he tries as much as possible to link it to people living there today. The region first came to prominent attention in the West in the 16th century, when trade routes were established, primarily seeking furs. Just after the turn of the century, an amazing wealth of minerals were discovered there, and mining became a large concern. Still, like Alaska, the area mostly remained a hinterland ó although it was a popular locale for gulag work camps. World War II saw the establishment of a front against German and Finnish troops, and the enlistment of thousands of native Saami to the Soviet Army ranks. Following the war, it acquired strategic significance with the advent of the Cold War, and much of it was militarized and placed off limits as numerous naval bases were built, and much of the Soviet nuclear submarine fleet was housed here.
Which brings me to the book's one problematic area. In his zeal to explore every square mile of the peninsula, Took continually butts up against restricted military zones. Now, these areas are generally little more than crumbling decommissioned bases, many housing nuclear submarines that area literally falling apart into the sea. Still, they are patrolled by special services, and they are explicitly no-go areas. Took repeatedly scoffs at the notion that these areas are still off-limits, and finally deliberately crosses into one for a period, going so far as to get close enough to a base to observe its workings. This strikes me as the height of Western arrogance as well as the height of stupidity. First of all, he's lucky not to have gotten shot by some nervous conscript, or trigger-happy patrol. Second, his actions immediately endanger everyone who assisted him on his various trips, placing them under suspicion. Thirdly, I wonder what he would make of a Russian adventurer who decided to poke his nose around some military zones in the UK? Yes, the rules about these areas may appear stupid and arbitrary, but it incumbent on all who travel to respect the laws of the country we are traveling in. Otherwise, we not only endanger ourselves, but those travelers who come after us. This is the one aspect of the book that really upset me.
By the end, Took has done much to dispelling the mystery of the region with his exhaustive travels and research. Ironically then, it is the sudden appearance of wealth in the go-go days of the late '90s that confounds him. In less than a decade, the Murmansk he first came to, with virtually no consumer culture or tourist infrastructure, is transformed into a fashion-concious city with boutiques aplenty, and heartbreaking child prostitutes. And upon reflection, this bleak end to the book is fitting for a region which, despite it's natural beauty, has seen a great deal of human and environmental catastrophe over the last century.

Lapland is not familiar to a good many people. Even though it encompasses a substantial part of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, say the word and most people think vaguely of reindeer, and that's about it. This beautifully written, excellently photographed book will change your mind quickly.
You will learn that Lapland is one of the last areas of Earth from which the ice sheets retreated. It is also the land of the Midnight Sun, as the striking cover photograph demonstrates. The photos and text will show you dramatic proof, particularly with respect to the lakes of Finland, and Sweden's Sarek National Park, the largest in Europe. To those who have explored Rocky Mountain National Park or the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, these pictures will evoke many pleasant memories.
Also discussed in detail is Lapland's varied wildlife, including bear, reindeer, birds, northen pike, and, of course, the fabled lemming. Writer Marsden's narrative of these animals is particularly engrossing. He also investigates the many seabirds, especially in his facinating chapter on the Norwegian Lofoten Islands and the famous Maelstrom whirlpool.
"Lapland" also discusses the Lapps, those people who still live by following and guiding the reindeer on their annual migration. The Lapps' ingenuity and perserverance in a severe climate is amazing.
I recommend this book very highly, as it is endlessly interesting. Enjoy

The book is ok, but it seems like it would be a good book for
introduction, or high school students. I couldn't see anyone
learning to do the lifts from this book, its definately not
a how to or substitute for real coaching. the title sounds
like its trying to hook in people but the book is a basic
primer on the o-lifts.

The reviews so far are quickly turning into a debate over suitablility of training types, crossover of athletic capacity and etc. This section is for reviews.
This book will teach you how to lift in the Olympic Style, pure and simple. This would be a supreme training tool in conjunction with an olympic lifting coach, but is very good on its own. Without a trainer, and using this book, I went from no confidence to snatching and clean and jerking.
The author does not at any point say that olympic lifting is the be-all and end-all of athletic training, but states that olympic lifting can play a major role in preparation for sport. Thus, the book achieves exactly what it says it will: teach the reader olympic lifting, and how to apply it to sports.

Mohammed, At all the elite levels of competition in an amazing array of sports you will find athletes performing olympic lifts almost exclusively. Even if you believe the author's beliefs are out of an enthusiasm for weightlifting you can not deny the success that this type of lifting has given to so many lifters throughout the entire world.

I agree that the person that says that explosive lifting is not helping doesnt know what he is talking about. The essence of basketball is not aerobic, it is anaerobic and very explosive. I dare you to take two identical players, and have one player only do endurance stuff and have another do explosive work and other anaerobic work. The later should end of being the better player. Basketball is full of athletic players who are fast, quick, jump high and are strong. Aerobic work takes away from explosiveness. I am a trainer, I have my CSCS, I graduated with a degree in exercise and sport science and I promise that this kind of lifting is key and helpful.

I translate documents into English from Portuguese and Spanish. This dictionary was highly recommended by a group of my colleagues. Quality writing in the target language is vital. For example, it's important to see what the cognate of the foreign language term really means in English. I hadn't paid much attention to my choice of English dictionaries except to buy a giant Random House unabridged, but this is much more useful AND the CD makes it so practical (although I'd probably benefit ergonomically from leaving the keyboard, picking up a hardbound book, and looking up a word!)

I love this dictionary. The software version even works with Word 2007 running under Vista. The dictionary has a space on the tool bar and I can access it while writing.
For less than 20 bucks, you get an excellent hard bound dictionary, and an excellent electronic dictionary. Best deal on Amazon as far as I'm concerned. I'd pop 20 bucks just for the electronic version.

this product is of rare utility for whomever uses written words, i.e. for most people. I use it in the classroom at the university, where I teach English-Italian classes, and the cd version is always running in my laptop, a terrific tool for full-text searches.

Dictionary Appraisal.......2007-08-23
I sought out this particular Dictionary as I already own one and wanted a current edition as the old ones pages were constantly being folded up at the corners. That is the only knock I have with this dictionary else it would otherwise receive a 5 star rating from me. The slang definitions are much appreciated as is the large print for these old eyes. Oh, I do have a couple of things I find just a tad annoying, namely, that you include Bing Crosby but leave out his partner in crime, Bob Hope, and as for baseball players, you include Aaron,Mays and Ruth, but leave out Cobb, Williams, Mantle and especially Lou Gehrig who only had a deadly disease named after him. I,m rather hoping once you release your 5th edition of Websters New World the aforementioned worthy notables will be included.

the word's meaning given by this dictionary is very straightforward and very close to life. Now look at the same entry in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary: women's intimate apparel. This is not plain English (to me) and sounds too classic.
When I change my current dictionary, I'll buy this one.

This is my most trusted dictionary for my own reference and studies. I bought a copy for work and home.
This dictionary is very easy-to-use and gives me full and complete definitions.
When I need to look up a word with an obscure usage or special idiom, I can find it in this dictionary 99% of the time without having to resort to an unabridged dictionary.
I love my New World Collegiate dictionary.
Note: If you want the dictionary software to can runs with Windows XP you will need to buy the 2004 edition as the Dictionary software supplied here will not work with Windows XP or later. However I bought this one because it is thumb indexed.
The Webster's New World College Dictionary is one that has by far the best roots and synonym studies of any Dictionary of the college level that I have seen. It gives Sanskrit roots which is often quite wonderful.

I purchased this particular dictionary to use in the study of Latin with my daughter because it was recommended as giving good information on word derivations. Every word I have looked up has indeed had good information on word derivations.

This book holds within its pages all the ecstasy of the human condition as well as its depths of despair. The sum total of the English language is captured and brought to the light of examination. We see ourselves, we see others, we see all of humanity in black and white. Compelling, captivating and best of all not one single spelling mistake. A must read for generations.
