Book Description
Landscapes of Power and Identity is a groundbreaking comparative history of two colonies on the frontiers of the Spanish empire—the Sonora region of northwestern Mexico and the Chiquitos region of eastern Bolivia’s lowlands—from the late colonial period through the middle of the nineteenth century. An innovative combination of environmental and cultural history, this book reflects Cynthia Radding’s more than two decades of research on Mexico and Bolivia and her consideration of the relationships between human societies and the geographic landscapes they inhabit and create. At first glance, Sonora and Chiquitos are quite different: one a scrub-covered desert, the other a tropical rainforest of the greater Amazonian and Paraguayan river basins. Yet the regions are similar in many ways. Both were located far from the centers of colonial authority, organized into Jesuit missions and linked to the principal mining centers of New Spain and the Andes, and then absorbed into nation-states in the nineteenth century. In each area, the indigenous communities encountered European governors, missionaries, slave hunters, merchants, miners, and ranchers.
Radding’s comparative approach illuminates what happened when similar institutions of imperial governance, commerce, and religion were planted in different physical and cultural environments. She draws on archival documents, published reports by missionaries and travelers, and previous histories as well as ecological studies and ethnographies. She also considers cultural artifacts, including archaeological remains, architecture, liturgical music, and religious dances. Radding demonstrates how colonial encounters were conditioned by both the local landscape and cultural expectations; how the colonizers and colonized understood notions of territory and property; how religion formed the cultural practices and historical memories of the Sonoran and Chiquitano peoples; and how the conflict between the indigenous communities and the surrounding creole societies developed in new directions well into the nineteenth century.

Cultural landscapes are usually understood within physical geography as ones transformed by human action. Advances in palaeocological reconstruction techniques have increased our powers to discern the earliest human impacts. This stimulating new book attempts to bridge the gap between the sciences and the humanities by reviewing the most important methodological and conceptual tools that help environmental scientists understand cultural landscapes.

Book Description
The environment we inhabit is inseparable from culture. The contributors to this volume move through time and space - from prehistoric Europe to the Enlightenment, and from Aboriginal Australia to the industrial heart of Britain - to compare the ways in which the environment is constructed in different ways across cultures. The book transcends disciplinary boundaries, bringing together leading anthropologists, archaeologists, geographers, historians, and literary scholars to provide challenging perspectives on the ways in which culture influences human conceptions of landscape and the environment. The essays explore the interrelationship between values and emotions associated with 'landscape', and the economic practices that help to shape the physical and social environments in which people live. The book provides powerful evidence of the role of culture in shaping our understanding of the material world.

Book Description
Early European descriptions of North America tell about a landscape and a variety of cultures in northeast Florida--a region that had been occupied by native people for more than 10,000 years--that were unlike anything the explorers and settlers had ever encountered. This story of the land and people in that region of the St. Johns River and the Atlantic coast covers 18,000 years--from the Ice Age to the first half of the 20th century. James Miller describes how natural features transformed and how cultural traditions of native people, as well as Spanish, English, and American colonists, developed in response to opportunities and constraints of the environment. With an unusually broad scope in time, space, and subject matter, he uses the example of northeast Florida to explore the notion of environmental equilibrium, to illustrate the fallacy of a pristine environment, and to show how essential environmental history is to modern ecological planning. Fully illustrated with 25 photographs and 40 maps and written in an accessible style that synthesizes material usually accessible only to specialists, the book will appeal to general readers and policy planners as well as experts. No comparable environmental history of any Florida region exists.

Book Description
Present anxieties about global warming and threats to biodiversity leave no doubts that environmental changes impact upon humans. Perceptions of the environment change as people try to define and shape 'nature' in different ways. The book explores the relationship between environmental change and society from the last Ice Age to the present. The book examines the environmental impact of fluctuations in climate and the demand for energy, and the patters which human societies have imposed on their surroundings, from boundaries to the cultural projections of legends and film. Together they show how insights from the disciplines of geography and geography, history and anthropology, can throw fresh light on the long-term attachment of people to place. The chapters in this book were originally delivered as Linacre Lectures at Linacre College, Oxford University

Book Description
- What makes people care about the environment?
- Why and how do different cultural groups value land in different ways?
With increasing international concern about green issues, and the apparent failure of mechanistic solutions to complex problems, Uncommon Ground provides a timely understanding of the cultural values that underpin human-environmental relations. Through a comparison of two very different groups, the Aboriginal people and the white cattle farmers in Far North Queensland, Uncommon Ground explores how the human-environmental relationship is culturally constructed.
This highly topical study also examines the long-term conflicts over land in Australia, which have brought to the surface each group's environmental values. The author considers how these values are acquired, and the universal and cultural factors that lead to their development. Major emphasis is put on the cultural forms that create and express environmental values for the Aborigines and the white pastoralists, such as:
- historical background
- land use and economic modes
- socio-spatial organization
- language, knowledge and methods of socialization
- oral and visual representation
- cosmological beliefs and systems of law

Excellent, practical and to the point........2005-10-22
If you are looking for a practical book on deer, turkey, upland birds and other wildlife food plot management, this is the best of all the books I have read. The book is based on the use of affordable equipment, Biologic seed products and sound agricultural practice. I have increased deer activity and estimated that the turkey population has tripled in 1.5 years.
This is an excellent book at a low price.

Customer Reviews:
Confidence in speaking French.......2007-09-02
I doubt that you can learn a language in just ten minutes a day but this one at least gives you confidence to at least try to speak some french as a traveller and people always respond well to the fact that you have made an effort.
One of the most attractive features of this book is the simple system of pronuncation. Next is the logical way it sets about teaching you ie., the order of gettin to the heart of the matter. Some of the suggested ways of learning vocabulary can be expanded onWell worth the cost.
An excellent way to learn a language.......2007-08-23
These CDs are a very useful adjunct to the "French in 10 Minutes A Day" workbook. They are not a substitute, though, so be forewarned that you will need the book as well. The description of this product implies that the book is included, but it is not. Still, this is a great value and has been very fun and informative to use so far. I look forward to continuing with the program.
Great beginning step to learning French.......2007-08-23
I bought these right after returning from Paris knowing I was going back the following year. I didn't know one word of French before these CD's and when I returned to Paris I felt quite competent getting around. I wasn't fluent by any means, but these CD's focus on what you need to know as a traveler i.e. asking basic questions, making reservations, going to the post office, airport terms, ordering food, menu item names, names of shops and conjugation of common verbs. I learned a tremendous amount just by listening to the CD's. The use of different people on the CD's introduces various accents and helps reinforce pronunciation. The workbook lessons are a nice beginner level and follow the CD's and are good to reinforce the spellings and vocabulary. There is a glossary in the back which is also helpful. I highly recommend this set to anyone wanting a good first step to learning French or just wanting to be able to get around France on vacation. It made a huge difference in my confidence from the first year, not knowing a word to being able to walk into a place asking for a table, ordering my meal and paying completely in French.
An ideal self-study book to start with........2007-07-14
I bought this book for preparation of travelling to France in the future.
This book;
- is written in plain English.
- has lots of illustrations and is fun to learn French.
- has Exercises, Cross Word Games, etc. on each steps.
- includes effective study aids, e.g. Flash Cards, Sticky Labels,
Beverage and Menu Guide.
To sum up, this is an ideal "self-study" French language book to start with, not to mention "10 Minutes a Day Audio CD Series" make a great companion for the book.
Great Book for any level of French.......2007-06-07
This book is probably the best book i have used to improve my french. It is packed with games, exerises, imformantion, and pictures. It is only good up to Intermidates. Those who are already intermidates or advanced, i don't recommand it. It also has stickers on the back that you could put on varies places in your household. like if it is Lamp, but the sticker on the lamp, and everytime you turn on the lamp you say it in french. It also has flashcards. What is also helpful in this book is that not only does it have pronuncation on top on the word/sentance, but it has the english words underneath the exact word it is pronuncing. It is Highly Recommand, you will enjoy it!

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Confusing.......2005-07-24
This guide is not very well organized. It helps with the main missions well enough, but I constantly found myself searching through the guide to see where I currently was. The game allows quite a bit of freedom in how to move around the world (city), and this guide obviously had difficulties organizing its content around that.
However, I did find the overall guide helpful. Especially the overview and introduction chapters got me in the right mindset to approach most of the game on my own.
Could have been more organized........2004-08-04
The book is nice and clean and the pictures are clear and do focus on areas that you need to keep in mind. The problem with this guide is the information is so jumbled that it is hard to find information that you need especially when navigating to new areas on the city map. The game provides nice 3D replicas of the levels and the city areas, but often times I think it would be more functional to go with a more simplistic diagram. You can certainly navigate the game with book, but sometimes you gotta take some time to look up information mid game because the information is too scattered. It would have also been nice to provide the purchaser with a level "loot list" like many that you can find online to help players on expert level get their 100 percent loot requirement. All in all a guide is kinda unnecessary for this game, but the one they provide isn't "bad," but I think it should have been more organized.

Shadows whisper and the words are deadly. A small, friendly Colorado town, nestled in the breathtaking Rockies, cloaks a malevolence, an evil that stalks certain women. Jesslyn Black, a writer, is content living her now-single, childless life. If she keeps to herself, she can't get hurt. Haunted by the past, Jesslyn never again wants to experience the soul shredding pain of losing a loved one. But a murder changes that. Aiden Kinncaid is running from his own secret loss. As the CEO of Kinncaid Enterprises, he travels to this remote Colorado resort town to oversee the opening of the new Highland Hotel. Though he's not interested in any kind of relationship, he finds himself drawn to this temperamental, brown-eyed beauty. And her rough-edged attitude is a challenge to him. But whether or not he sought out a relationship, he finds he wants to help Jesslyn. She begins to soften towards him as the ice around her heart thaws. As the two learn to trust and begin to reach for love, a monster creeps closer and closer- his next victim chosen- threatening to rip Jesslyn away from Aiden forever. Rating: Contains violence and graphic sexual content.

Excellent Romantic Suspense!.......2005-10-05
Jesslyn has suffered many heartbreaks in her life. She has lost loved ones over and over. This time it is her close friend, and it happens the night she meets Aiden Kincaid.Aiden comes to Colorado to oversee the opening of his family's hotel. He is renting Jesslyn's house and from the first moment he meets Jesslyn, Aiden is thrust into the danger surrounding her.
As Jesslyn and Aiden's relationship grows stronger, the killer begins stalking her. Aiden wants Jesslyn safe and close and preferably in his arms. With Jesslyn feeling the same, they begin to help each other heal from their painful pasts. Joining the fray is the rest of the Kincaid family. They are a tight-knit group, combining forces to keep Jesslyn out of danger. Aiden's parents and his brothers are willing to do everything in their power to help and protect her. But the madman still stalks. It's going to take all of them to stop the killer before he can get to Jesslyn. Will it be enough?
Deadly Shadows, the first in the Kincaid Brothers series, plays out like a movie. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who the murderer was, what his motives were, and when he would get caught. Jesslyn is witty and charming. I wanted her to find happiness so badly. She kept me laughing and rooting for her. Aiden is sexy, strong, capable and loving. Jaycee Clark is a wonderful storyteller. I could feel the emotions of the characters: their tension and fear, passion and pain. I was completely drawn into the story. Deadly Shadows is an excellent romantic suspense and I am eager to read more!

Deadly Dimitrius!!!.......2006-08-01
Wow, for this book to be republished now might almost
seems like a crime! The thrills don't stop, and there
are only like 4 "good" endings. In one of the good
endings, you win a lot of money, but the only thing I
didn't like about the choices there were that they
didn't let you bet on the green when you were playing
roulette. In two other scenarios, you manage to
barely escape death. In one of them, you complete
your mission 100% successfully. Some of things that
can happen to you are gruesome enough to make it such
a good book, but maybe too good. You could get a
hypodermic needle put into you, gas will envelop you
in a limousine, or you could be turned into an
experimental subject in which if you read enough of
the endings, you will understand that eventually this
human experiment that you have become will explode
into smithereens as a few intense examples. Maybe a
teen rating is not enough, maybe it should even have
been placed as an R rating. If this was turned into a
movie showing the various scenarios, it'd definitely
be rated R at least. You go Brightfield!!
This book may be a continuous portion from another, as
it starts off with how you have just "successfully"
completed a mission from the Far East in the 2nd
sentence of page 1. The book displays how worldly
Packard can be just like in #39 Supercomputer.
Dramatic and to the point to say the least.

This is the greatest one of the series I've read...I can't really explain it, but I recommend it to anyone!
