Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A947113. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis represents the results of a comparative analysis of current and proposed airfoil sections for use on sailing craft. The primary goal of this report is to develop a sail replacement that functions with the ease and durability of current sailboat sails, yet offers a marked improvement in overall performance, with minimum penalties of weight and construction complexity. State-of-the-art computational methods are utilized to determine the respective aerodynamic characteristics of a mode of a current windsurfer sail section and models of a proposed semi-rigid wing-sail section. Wing-sails offer the same promise of performance gains that modern airfoils have produced in comparison to early thin airfoils. An investigation into differences and possible benefits of the analyzed sections' aerodynamic loading and stall characteristics is made using fully viscous Navier-Stokes Computational Fluid Dynamic codes. Finally a full three-dimensional wing-sail computational model is constructed to identify further areas where sectional improvements would enhance the overall performance of the lifting shape.
Book Description
The third edition of this highly successful manual is not only a revised text but has been extended to meet the interpretive needs of Raman users as well as those working in the IR region. The result is a uniquely practical, comprehensive and detailed source for spectral interpretation. Combining in one volume, the correlation charts and tables for spectral interpretation for these two complementary techniques, this book will be of great benefit to those using or considering either technique.
In addition to the new Raman coverage the new edition offers:
* new section on macromolecules including synthetic polymers and biomolecules;
* expansion of the section on NIR (near infrared region) to reflect recent growth in this area;
* extended chapter on inorganic compounds including minerals and glasses;
* redrawn and updated charts plus a number of new charts covering data new to this edition.
This new edition will be invaluable in every industrial, university, government and hospital laboratory where infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectral data need to be analysed.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA DEPT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A754314. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The need for effective operation from the sea while conducting amphibious operations ashore has never been more evident than in today's modern conflicts. As important as this task is it has not significantly changed since World War I. Sea Force is an attempt to show that sea basing, as discussed by the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in Sea Power 21, can be accomplished by the year 2020 with reasonable advances in technology. The concept of sea basing implies a number of capabilities that are not inherent in current expeditionary forces, among these are Ship to Objective Maneuver (STOM), indefinite sustainment, selective offload, reconstitution of forces ashore, long range Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS), and an increased capability in command and control. The Marine Corps has also established the requirement of a 3.0 Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) lift capability that is not currently met by the existing force structure. The Total Ship Systems Engineering Program undertook the task of designing a system of ships that could be brought together to enable the sea basing of one MEB for an indefinite period of time. The Sea Force design completely supports all of the operational requirements of STOM in addition to providing a path for re-supply and a method for reconstitution of forces ashore. Sea Force also is designed to be reconfigurable from a warship to a supply ship during a shipyard availability period with minimal effort through the use of modularity.

Book Description
The detection of single molecules opens up new horizons in analytical chemistry, biology and medicine. This discipline, which belongs to the expanding field of nanoscience, has been rapidly emerging over the last ten years.
This handbook provides a thorough overview of the field. It begins with basics of single molecule detection in solution, describes methods and devices (fluorescense correlation spectroscopy, surface enhanced Raman scattering, sensors, especially dyes, screening techniques, especially confocal laser scanning microscopy). In the second part, various applications in life sciences and medicine provide the latest research results.
This modern handbook is a highly accessible reference for a broad community from advanced researchers, specialists and company professionals in physics, spectroscopy, biotechnology, analytical chemistry, and medicine. Written by leading authorities in the field, it is timely and fills a gap - up to now there exists no handbook concerning this theme.

Descriptions, Directions and More.......2006-11-05
This book does a great job of describing so many of the wonderful hikes the greater Seattle area has to offer, rating them for difficulty and scenery and giving useful hints and directions.
We took our nine year old on several of the hikes and it was nice to know which ones would be most difficult and to tell him what to expect on the hike.
Great book for hikkers.......2006-10-11
I just started hiking this year and so i wanted a guide that would help me.
This is the one i chose. It gave me exact directions, difficulty level, hike conditions, best season to go , whether fees are applied, whether kids or dogs can be taken, what to see, what all to take along, time for a round trip, how many miles to walk etc.
I think that was the sufficient information for us. We have taken many of them and had a wonderful time in seattle.
Give it a try, its a good reference book.
Good depending on what you're looking for.......2006-08-28
This is a great book for natives of the region who are into intense, strenuous hikes. I however, am more of a novice hiker and found only a few hikes in here that were of my skill level. There aren't too many hikes to pick from if all you want is an afternoon hike along the water or an easy day trip with the kids.
Great user-friendly guide.......2006-06-24
This is one of 3 local hiking guides I have of the area and this is definitely the most user-friendly one. The driving directions were clear and the description of the hikes was acurate and very helpful.
The thing I appreciate most with this guide provides was that whether or not there is a fee (parking and/or permit) involved at each hike. By listing who manages each trail, I could avoid arriving at a hike just to find out that I did not have cash to pay for parking or that I should have stop by a local vendor to get a pass/permit.
Also, I always take my dog on hikes, so it is good to know the pet regulation at each trail.
This is defnitely a must for everyone who lives in the Seattle area and wants to explore the local trails.
Great for local stuff.......2006-03-02
I'm a Washington native and have been doing some type of hiking most my life and I enjoyed this book. I am not normally one for guidebooks, but this was a good one after moving northward and trying to learn the new trails I'd have access to. It's great for learning about hikes close to the Seattle and central King County. However this does leave out some great hikes that a little farther out. A good resouce for those that are centrally located. I like the elevevation chart as it gives a easily viewable representation of the trail, however I'd like to see Topographic maps as well to see a little more cleary how the locations come together. I also don't care for the directions as they all seem to indicate mileage from exits. Unless you follow the exact directions(from seattle) there are no mile marker references. So those of us who know some of the backroads but not the trailhead location are left to search our own route or take major routes more. I'd also like more information on varying the hikes along areas that are quite networked with trails(the Issaquah alps for example). Overall I'd recommend this book to anyone who lives along the 1-90 or 1-5 corridor and wants to get familiar with the local hikes, but if your much outside Seattle or Bellevue then this book starts to seem less useful.

If you're planning your Continental tour, or just heading Europewards and letting the winds of fate waft you this way and that, you'll want some language assistance, preferably in a form that doesn't require an extra set of luggage. Rick Steves, noted Europe expert and writer of candid, accurate, and entertaining guide books, has a phrase book and dictionary that contains the three major languages you're likely to encounter in ramble around Europe or a trek in the Alps.
For each of the three languages, there are chapters on basic survival phrases, numbers, money, and time, transportation, sleeping, and eating, plus activities such as sightseeing, shopping, and nightlife. There are also sections on phoning and mailing, health and emergencies, and making small talk--including the essential section on animal noises (because what's woof woof to you is ouah ouah to the French, bau bau to Italians, and wuff wuff in German). There are also lists of the animal noises made by humans (also known as profanity) so you can enjoy the linguistic color as the man next to you drops his fragile souvenir, or swear like a Roman when you stub your toe in the Coliseum.
The menu decoders are quite useful, and, despite the book's small size, it covers most contingencies--from bartering over hotel-room prices to rental-car considerations, interpreting train schedules to discussing medical conditions such as constipation and diarrhea, hemorrhoids and indigestion, body odor and the giggles. The dictionary in the back shows the English, French, Italian, and German for each of 1,200 words, and there's an appendix of useful information, including the European phone numbers for various calling-card operators as well as their international access codes and country codes, a chart of monthly temperatures for each country and a metric conversion table, as well as tongue twisters in French, German, and Italian, to while away the train-travel hours and impress your compartment mates with your willingness to launch into their language and dare to sound like a fool. --Stephanie Gold

Flip to the section on Love.......2007-05-07
Any book that tells you how to say "May i give you a back massage" and "I dont have any diseases" in three different languages is definatly worth buying it. Also it has the basics and maybe the more useful phrases like "where is the bathroom" "check please" and the like.
Got me through Europe.......2007-03-10
I bought this book because of the reviews I read and it lived up to the hype. It came in handy in both routine and emergency situations - particularly when I had left my passport, money and credit cards on a train in Italy and had to communicate to the stationmaster in Genoa!
Handy & Portable.......2007-01-06
This books is great. It has many handy phrases that make traveling in Europe easier. Contrary to what most people believe, not everyone in other countries speak English. If you are the adventurous type and like to explore on your own, knowing some phrases to navigate the area is really useful.
I purchased additional copies of this book for a few friends that were traveling as well.
I'm glad I bought this book BEFORE going to Europe.......2006-07-10
This book is full of practical advice and essential information that kept me from making some mistakes on our vaction this summer. Though I probably won't return to Europe for a few years, this book will stay in my bookshelves for future reference. I have always enjoyed Rick Steves' travel shows because of his down-to-earth, straight-forward style. The book follows that pattern perfectly. I highly recommend this book to any European travel novice.
AWESOME!.......2005-06-29
This is one of my best purchases in Amazon, it's amazing how good is this book. It's very practical for any traveler around the world, it has detailed content in subjects like: what to tell to italian men if they are bothering you (and as a woman... this can become very handy!) or everything you need to say in a medical emergency or how to enjoy the food in a restaurant (because you can understand now the menu). I really recommend this book if you are looking for a better experience in your trips or if you are learning a foreign language (like me). Greetings from Mexico. Nayeli

cliche.......2007-10-15
Reading this novel for a class in Native American History, I am very much disappointed by the Professor's choice.
All of the characters, events, and descriptions are cliche. There is no love story to speak of because for most of the novel the characters that are supposed to be in love do not interact.
All of the non-Cherokee characters are evil caricatures. The author tries to make every white character as reprehensible as possible.
Even worse, the Cherokee characters are similarly caricatured.
While the author identifies the Cherokee words used to describe food and animals, Cherokee religious terminology is left unexplained as if the reader is expected to pass it off as primitive superstitious mumbo-jumbo and not as legitimate religious expression.
Its as if Robert Conley read a few books on the holocaust and decided to apply the same tired language to his description of the Trail of Tears: "Waguli lost track of the days. One day was like the last. Time had ceased to exist..."
It reminds me of a Disney movie in every sense. The book is comical, which is a shame because the subject matter is so important. I just don't feel Robert Conley does history justice by turning it into caricature.
superduper.......2007-03-20
The book was received within a reasonable time and was in great condition, as had been noted in the sale.
Love Story Set Against the Backdrop of the Trail of Tears.......2007-01-18
"Mountain Windsong", is Robert J. Conley's first novel of The People - his own Cherokee ancestors - and it is an emotional tale of love lost amidst the horror that was the Trail of Tears when, in the 1830s, the Cherokee were forced from the homelands in the Southeast to the barren lands of Oklahoma Territory. Using the historical event as the backdrop, Conley tells the story of Waguli and Oconeechee (the daughter of a famous chief) as they are separated at the beginning of the forced march. Throughout the novel we follow the lovers as they struggle to find each other while try to survive the brutality of their situation.
The story is told by LeRoy, which he is retelling from his grandfather; LeRoy had become interested in the story when he inquired about the origin of the "Windsong" he had heard on his reservation in North Carolina (a reservation of Cherokee who escaped the forced relocation).
Conley does a masterful job of weaving the lovers' tale with a vibrant and historically accurate account of the Trail of Tears. Well researched and laced with the words of historical document such as a treaty signed in 1835, this novel a great window into a horrific tragedy.
My thought of mountain windsong.......2003-10-08
I really enjoyed your your book. The many diffent seens that took place in the story,is what keep me reading your book.I loved the love seen in your story,I'm in love so I felt how oconeechee and waguli I can feel them.I'm happy Igot the chance to wwrite you and hopefully I can read more book of yours.
A Love Story.......2003-10-08
Robert J. Conley's book Mountain Windsong: Trail of tears was a wonderfully written book. I never before cared much about learning or reading about the indians. After reading this book I was glad that I read it. Mr. Conley's book was very informative and descriptive. Through a love story he told about the horrible treatment of the cherokee people by the white soliders. If you don't the first of the book, you won't get the rest of the book. If you get bored easy, just keep reading and it will get exciting. Your two main characters are Oconeechee(a girl) and Waguli(guy from the old town). Whenever I got done reading this book I felt sad because I never knew that the cherokee people got treated that way. I really enjoyed this book and encourage everyone who has a chance to read it.

Book Description
By the fall of 1839, the white population of the United States had crowded Indians to the extent that government officials coerced the Five Civilized Tribes into signing treaties which exchanged their eastern lands for a stipulated sum of money and territory in what is now Oklahoma. Most Cherokees refused to honor the New Echota Treaty signed by some members of their tribe. Consequently, the U. S. government rounded them up and herded them into stockades for forcible removal over what came to be known as the Trail of Tears.
This book is loosely based on that historic event. Its main characters are two young adults. Alisa Renoir, a wealthy and well-educated young lady of French Cherokee descent, is forcibly removed from her home in Tennessee, along with the rest of her tribe. Her Cherokee fiancee deserts her to hide in the hills. With her grandparents, she endures the humiliation of being herded in a stockade, hating the soldiers who put her there. On the trek to Indian Territory she is befriended by a young U.S. Army Lieutenant, Clayton Morgan, who sympathizes with the plight of the Cherokees. She learns to cope with unaccustomed harsh circumstances and her bitterness is replaced by a slowly developing love for the young lieutenant. Other characters, children, teens and old people have important roles in the story as well.
Cherokee Windsong is described by the author as a heritage romance designed to bridge the gap between young adult leisure reading fare and the more difficult classics.
Beautifully written, the novel succeeds in making the reader more culturally literate while sounding the theme that true love can survive obstacles, and that adversity need not be calamity.
