Book Description
Spring 1994, Washington, D.C. - While the Clinton Administration grapples with its domestic policies, a sinister plot is being masterminded six thousand miles away in Baghdad. By using $100 million as bait and spinning a deadly web of corruption, forgery, and terror, Saddam Hussein seeks to embarrass the U.S. with the ultimate revenge: to steal a treasured historical document and then destroy it before the world's media-on July 4, 1994.As the countdown to Independence Day begins, two agents stand in the way of his nearly flawless plan: Scott Bradley, a rising star in the CIA who is desperate to prove his patriotism, and Hannah Kopec, the stunning Mossad operative who has already lost o much that she fears nothing and trusts no one. Their unrelenting quest to prevent what would undoubtedly be the most humiliating day in U.S. history takes them across four continents and climaxes in a dramatic, triple-twist ending.Ingeniously plotted and as up-to-the-minute as today's headlines, Honor Among Thieves resonates with the brilliant pace that is the trademark of master storyteller Jeffrey Archer.
Customer Reviews:
relaxing "after-work" read, nothing spectacular.......2007-01-22
Jeffrey Archer has done better, but still this oeuvre is a thrilling good read.
Compared to "Not a penny more, not a penny less" this piece lacks the brilliance
of the final plot, compared to his short-stories this one's a more "conventional" book.
A Great Thriller With Massive Political Insight.......2006-07-28
The year is 1993 and the Gulf War has only just terminated. Russia,Great Britain and the United States of America all have undergone a shift in political power and new presidents and prime ministers and leaders are endeavouring to usher in new ideas and conviction. But the sole survivor of all the adversaries is the indomitable despot Saddam Hussein, who stll commands power and authority in Iraq. And the Iraqi aupreme has conceived a devastating, crucial and unpredictable plan,a fair reflective of his own character relly,to force the new US President Bill Clinton lick the dust:steal the American Declaration of Independence and burn it in front of the world media on the fourth of July.
It's around this tense and harrowing theme that Jeffrey archer's sensational thriller "Honour Among Thieves" revolves and takes the reader on n edge-of-the-seat journey through an exquisitely executed theft at the National Gallery in washington DC,clandestine, nocturnal happenings on the streets of Paris, and dangerous, frightening and unkind towns, villages and deserts of Iraq. Essentially a novel based on the popular notions of a hero in a typically Hollywood archetype style plotting the demise of a highly regarded infamous villain along with his aide=de=camps,"Honour Among Thieves" is an adept attempt to canvas the geo-political tensions and apprehensions that were thretening the peace of the world at that time. And so invariably the convention amongst modern imaginative thriller writers keen to put forward a lone figure out to tame reality and outwit the master criminal,Jeffrey Archer's hero in this novel too is polite and relatively obscure man.
Scott Bradley is a young Professor at the Yale Law School in the States teaching Constitutional Law,a man always chased by a bitter parental history and forever willing to go beyond the reaches of his routine life. Bradley accomplishes a very diffrent sort of job too:he's a crucial teacher-cum-adviser to several CIA agents and other high officials. When he's sent to a dream field expedition to Paris to unravel te mystery behind the decision of the Israeli "Institute for Intelligence and Special Tasks"---better known as Mossad---to post a captivating young woman at the Iraqi Interest Section of the Jordanian Embassy in Paris, little does Bradley realise that he would ultimately entangle himself in a web that threatens to submerge his nation as well as his heart. Scott Bradley's adventure changes colour:from an informer, the protagonist transcends to the saviour of the American history and prestige;Bradley's sole mision becomes to retrieve the Declaration of Independence from Saddam Hussein's own territory before time as well as opportunity runs out.
It would be a crime indeed to reveal the pattern any further and the intensity and vigour that the British author blends with the precision of language and enormous political insight are to be read to be felt. The novel is remarkable not only for the intrigue and passion it invokes but also for the subtle remarks of massive moralistic implications. That the greed of power and money outreaches patriotic sentiment in today's world is made obvious in these empathic words of Saddam to his political advisers:"You have already witnessed my ability to turn the greed of their(America's)own people into a wilingness to steal the most cherished document in their nation's history." And this from a man who withdraws himself into a secure but vain knowledge of the love of his people foe him. In Hannah Kopec's character,Archer sketches the vibrant picture of a beautiful, young woman burning with revenge and this individualistic dismay and resentment towards the Iraqi tyrant is continued into a mass indignation revealed by the inhabitants of the Khan Beni Saad village.
Garbed in a sensational thriller,"Honour Among Thieves" is a frightening revelation of the degree that crime can eat into one's soul. Jeffrey Archer's sorcery here lies, besides in keeping the reader firmly engaged,in providing a poignant commentary on the shrewd transactions that are carried out in the worlds of politics and crime. Throughout the book, there's always a resurgency of suspicion that these two worlds, namely those of politics and crime, are strangely interlinked and almost symbiotic. The magnificient staging ofb the theft of the American Declaration of Independence, the cool fashion of criminal discussions, the muted but all the more powerful self-assertion of Saddam Hussein and the gradual spreading of the storylines are stupendous indicators to the class and mastery of Jeffrey Archer. This novelist has developed over the years to become one of most dazzling storytellers in the modern era and in "Honour Among Thieves",he creates a very interesting tale using people greatly significant during the time and employing fractions of his own experiences in politics. Jeffrey archer is a brilliant connoisseur who doesn't disappoint even an iota in this book.
Your Interest Will Dwindle as the Story Goes On........2005-06-18
After reading Archer's "The Eleventh Commandment," I was anxious to get to this one. I really didn't think I'd enjoy "The Eleventh Commmandment" after reading the summary but I was very happy with how it turned out. So, I was anxious to get to my second Archer book. Unfortunately, this one didn't live up to the same quality as the other. It starts out well enough but as the story goes on, I found myself losing interest in almost every aspect of the plot. The one redeeming quality about this one was the caliber of the main character. He was very likeable and the only reason I finished the book. I wanted to see how things turned out with him. Ironically, the lack of development for the main character, was the only thing I found fault with in "The Eleventh Commandment." Hmmm....If only Archer could have fused these two together.
The reasons for my not liking this book are many but I'll try to stick with the important ones. First, I thought that there were too many characters Archer introduced that he wanted us to remember. Almost all of the characters that I thought were unnecessary were part of the group of AMERICANS(believe that if you can) who were hired to steal the Declaration of Independence. Archer says that they went along with the theft because most of them did time in prison and have nothing but bad things to say about the American government. Still, the only real motivation that they have to go along with the scam is the payment they'll receive. Yet, most of them are well-off if not downright wealthy. I didn't think that a couple million dollars was motivation enough for them to betray their country. Sorry for that digression. Anyways, all of these traitors are given the amount of background equal to a good supporting character in other novels when really all they are are means to a temporary end. Once they've stolen the Declaration, there's really no point for them(with the exception of two) to remain characters in the story. And they aren't, until Archer resorts back to them in the end. By that time, I couldn't remember what role each one had played during the heist when he mentioned them by name.
Another complaint I have is with gap in the story between the time that the Declaration is stolen to the time there is a concerted effort to get it back. The only real progression during that period is the development of the relationship between the CIA man Scott Bradley and the Mossad agent, Hannah Kopec. Archer tries to pawn off a few scenes with Saddam in Baghdad but nothing really happens there.
While the mission in Baghdad is clever, it doesn't make up for the long, boring passage that is the first 3/4 of the book. There's nothing the reader didn't already know or couldn't anticipate up to that point. I'm glad that I didn't read this one before "The Eleventh Commandment" because I would have been soured on Archer and probably would have moved on to somebody else. Skip this one and try "The Eleventh Commandment" for a better read.
In one word: awesome!!!.......2005-03-02
Saddam Hussein plans to mastermind a robbery of the Decleration of Independence by hiring the mafia, world's best forgery expert and one of Clinton's close aides with $100 million. Then he plans to embarrass US by burning the national treasure in front of the world media. This book is absolutely awesome, the plots, twists and story-line move like a ferrari. Once you start reading it, you won't be able to put it down. Archer's best book to date.
A BESTSELLER BECOMES A BEST-LISTENER.......2005-01-03
TV personality Larry King has said there isn't a better storyteller alive than Jeffrey Archer. I can't vouch for that but Archer is certainly among the top tier with some 120 million of his thrillers in print. In addition to complex plotting and surprise endings Archer is known for using public figures in his tales. "Honor Among Thieves" is no exception as Bill Clinton in the early days of his presidency and Saddam Hussein take center stage.
Can't think of any more deadlier foes than the Mafia and the Iraqis. When they hook up it takes super human skills and efforts to attempt to foil their plot. While it sounds implausible, the plan in a nutshell is to have a Clinton impersonator swipe the Declaration of Independence and pass it along to Hussein so that he can burn it in front of CNN cameras on the Fourth of July.
Obviously, a little help is needed to purloin this document from the National Archives and substitute a forgery. Not to worry Archer has an unlimited supply of nefarious characters from a lawyer on the take to a star plastic surgeon to a premier forger.
First released in 1993 with a whopping 500,000 copies, "Honor Among the Thieves" was a bestseller. Now, released in audio book form by Audio Renaissance and read by the talented Bill Roberts it's a best-listener.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-04
Entertaining caper story.
For something different, this trade takes the point of view of the Injustice Society, mostly, as they look to steal a powerful weapon and bring back the rather nasty bad guy Johnny Sorrow.
The JSA headquarters is undermanned, and another villain group also gets in the way.
For those who can't get enough Wildcat.......2007-06-06
As a longtime fan of the JSA I must confess that I'm just about on my last tether. The JSA is the ONLY series I pick up without researching the quality of the material and I'm beginning to rethink that pattern.
The first story features the Injustice Society including The Wizard, The Icicle, Solomon Grundy, Tigress, The Gentleman Ghost, The Thinker and Ragdoll. On this occasion the Injustice Society is planning to break into JSA headquarters to steal the Prometheus Key and restore Johnny Sorrow. Standing in their way are Wildcat, Star Girl, JJ Thunder and, just to throw a monkey wrench in the works, some members of Luthor's new super team "The Society" show up to try and snatch the key for themselves. The story is written from the view of the villains and includes the mundane tasks of setting up the equipment for the raid and planning out the operation. It's an interesting idea that works more in theory than execution although I'll give the writer bonus points for trying.
The second story features the return of the Spear of Destiny, an artifact with a long history with the JSA. The Spear of Destiny was originally used to explain why the JSA never took out Hitler during WW II. Seems that the spear can control metahumans and it's now being controlled by the Dragon King. His first targets are The Flash and Wildcat.
Now hold up a second here. As it turns out Wildcat is my LEAST favorite member of the JSA. He has tremendous potential as a character but I despise the way he has been written for the last three decades and this story is one of the worst. He's an aging ex-heavyweight champ except he's written as a smart mouthed jackass (a crusty jackass to boot) who is apparently nigh on unstoppable despite having no real powers except for his nine lives. My patience with Wildcat ran out about a year or so ago when he took on the entire Injustice Society by himself AND WON. So just my luck that BOTH stories feature him prominently. The story is extremely tiresome and I looked forward to it being over. As always Wildcat stole the show, magically leaping like 30 feet vertically into the air to catch the Dragon King's escaping jet before tearing large hunks off of it. Please, I can't take it anymore. This is just absurd. The only good thing that came out of this story is that Wildcat was forced to burn his final extra life leaving just one left. Just one more.
Three stars is being EXTREMELY generous.
Another installment of the JSA Story.......2007-03-20
This is a collection of tales from JSA Classified, stories about the world of the JSA. A majority of this book is actually a story about the latest version of the Injustice Society. The characters are more 3 dimensional than you would expect on a flat page. The second story is a Flash-Wildcat adventure that fleshes out these old stalwarts. I especially liked the scene where the Flash and his wife are on the coach and she is wearing his Flash helmet. It is a good addition to your collection of JSA stories.

Super detailed view of pirate life in general and Kidd in particular.......2006-09-04
Great detailed book about pirates and privateers and how they lived. Written by a true historian with careful attention and loving zest for the pirate life. Want to know what careening really meant? And why they had to do this to protect their ships? Find out here. Want to know about trade winds in the Indian Ocean? Find out here. Comes with a nice index at the back for future reference. A must have for your pirate library.
Avast me hearties.......2000-11-10
A great subject and not much covered except by Daniel Defoe 250 years ago. Good bios of the major characters. Very good explanations of the period, the hows and whys of piracy. Since piracy by its very nature is a secretive profession there isnt much in print either contemporary or historical. The author certainly has done his research, the notes and bibliography section of this book runs over 60 pages. The Madagascar pirates must have been the most successful thieves in history and the author is able to convey to us today just how much booty they managed to steal, billions in todays values. And many of them got away with it. The book is facinating yet doesnt read like a novel nor is it only a dry scholarly tome. Where able the author conveys both motivations and personalities of his characters. A very good read esp, if one is interested in the development of Madagascar.

Book Description
Mary Stiner uses ecological niche theory to analyze and interpret several Middle Paleolithic archaeological and paleontological sites in southern Europe. Her concern is with how the hunting, scavenging and foraging behavior of Neandertals compared and contrasted with the subsistence behavior of other large predators living in the region at the time--lions, hyenas, and wolves, for example--and with how Neandertal subsistence behavior related to the behavior of the anatomically modern humans who subsequently came to dominate the area in the Upper Paleolithic. Her conclusion, very broadly stated, is that Neandertals entered the Middle Paleolithic in direct and successful competition with lions, hyenas, and wolves, but ended the period in direct and ultimately unsuccessful competition for the ecological niche that we came to occupy with our slightly more advanced technology and slightly more sophisticated ambush hunting strategies and techniques. Book Description
Of all the improvements to a tired-looking boat, none will have a more dramatic impact than refinishing. And few boat tasks are easier. This is a combination forged in Valhalla, which makes it surprising that Sailboat Refinishing is the first basic book on the subject. Author Don Casey focuses on the hulls, decks, cabins, spars, and wood trim of fiberglass boats. Painting, varnishing, repairing gelcoat, and applying hull graphics are all covered with step-by-step illustrated instructions.

What you need to know.......2006-08-13
Similar to other books in the series. Style wise, this is the opposite of The Sailmaker's Apprentice by Marino. This is not a book to pick up while sitting by the fire sipping tea. It is a great reference book with concise "how to" information. Good explanations of both materials and techniques - including safety.
For beginners to experts!.......2004-02-25
We recently lucked into a wonderful Grampian 26 in great shape, and were even luckier to have located this and the other Don Casey books! Even though it is still very much winter here, I'm chomping at the bit to start preparing the boat for the water. Casey's books are a must for any yacht owner!
Clear guide to the Do's and Don'ts of painting a boat.......1998-10-31
Another crystal clear Don Casey book. Explains painting, varnishing, surface prep, brushes, solvents, sanding, basic gelcoat, fixing small blisters, painting the mast, applying the name, fixing non-skid surfaces, fixing crazing and alligatoring, and bottom painting. If I screw it up now, it won't be Casey's fault :)!

Customer Reviews:
Top Notch! Great Reference! Delivers!!.......2007-10-15
Nancy Lamb's books explores most if not all facets of writing with a focus on children stories. Very dense, her book offers enough information in each topic to get you started writing and to understand story structure. An excellent primer for beginners, the books serves well for experienced writers as a refresher. Lots of golden nuggets in each page. It is a book that will not remain on your shelf collecting dust. It's not the end all book on writing but will save you time and money from buying poor quality how to books on writing. Her style is very straightforward. She offers good examples to make her point as well as exercises at the end of each chapter geared to either the writing of your story or an element that raises your awareness to good writing. Buy the book. You won't be sorry.
A method for all writers.......2007-03-08
There is always more than one way to approach something; including writing. Nancy Lamb covers everything from writer's block to crafting your story. This is THE most valuable book on my writer's shelf and I refer back to it constantly.
Writer's guide to children's stories.......2007-01-05
It was a little more technical than I wanted. I am sure others would like it. I was searching a more whimsical read.
More of a lion than a lamb..........2006-09-15
When I decided to write this review I went to my shelves to count how many "how-to" books I had bought over the years before I came across this one. The answer is 106. Pity I didn't know earlier that what I was looking for could be found between the covers of Nancy Lamb's "Writer's Guide to Crafting Stories for Children."
Every sentence has earned its place in the book; there is nothing that you can afford to skim. Yet all is delivered with warmth, humor, wit and wisdom. The advice is practical and specific. Every question that I wanted to ask, and quite a few that I didn't know I should have wanted to ask, was answered with clarity and authority.
The exercises, in particular, ask that you read suggested examples of children's literature that have successfully pulled off the particular skill you are trying to master. Ms Lamb guides you through the questions you should be asking yourself as you read, and then shows you how to turn those questions to your own manuscript. This is the technique used by university level writing programs across the country.
So do yourself a favor - buy this book. In fact, buy a couple of back up copies because your writing friends will 'accidentally' walk home with yours and any copy you manage to keep hold of will fall apart from overuse.
It's a one volume MFA in Creative Writing for Young People.
Pretty good reference.......2006-09-03
In switching from technical writing to writing for children I found this book to be a useful reference. The content and insights offered are generally outstanding. However, I found the distinction between related concepts (like Throughline and Premise for example) a bit unclear. Also, some of the exercises seemed to have been thrown onto the page without much thought, rather than carefully developed to aid the aspiring writer. Since I don't have access to writing classes, I made extensive notes and then re-sequenced the exercises so that they flowed naturally towards getting the reader started on writing a story. The book was terrific for helping me work that out. Recognizing that each writer's approach is different, it would have been nontheless helpful if the author had thought through the sequence and content of the exercises a bit more.
