Book Description
John McEnroe was just an eighteen-year-old amateur from Queens when he stunned the tennis world by making it to the Wimbledon semifinals in 1977. He turned pro the following year after winning the NCAA singles title; three years later, he was ranked number one in the world. McEnroe dominated tennis in the eighties, winning three Wimbledon and four U.S. Open titles. His 1980 Wimbledon final match with Bjorn Borg is considered by many tennis experts to be the best match ever.
You Cannot Be Serious is McEnroe at his most personal, a no-holds-barred examination of contemporary tennis, his championship seasons, his cantankerous on-court behavior, his marriage to Tatum O'Neal, his current roles as a devoted father, husband to pop star Patty Smyth, senior tennis tour player, and controversial television commentator, and much more.
Funny, biting, close to the bone, this is exactly the book you'd expect-and want-from one of the most colorful figures of our time.

Customer Reviews:
Honest and Entertaining.......2007-03-30
The greatest asset of Mr. McEnroe's autobiography is the author's (sometimes brutal) honesty regarding both himself and the characters/events surrounding his rise to fame. Sure, it is clear at times that McEnroe is concealing some juicy details about his personal life, but it is not fair to expect admissions about everything! What McEnroe does share proves to be very revealing about both the pro-tennis tour and his celebrity lifestyle.
Ultimately this book will appeal to fans of not just McEnroe, but rather all of his contemporaries, since McEnroe is not afraid to dish the dirt on his colleagues. Although McEnroe is not going to be winning a literary prize anytime soon (some exciting grand slam wins are breezed by in a style that makes them seem almost secondary), his exciting roller coaster life proves amiable reading which most tennis aficionados will enjoy.
You cannot be serious.......2007-02-21
As a lifelong fan of tennis I was looking forward to this book very much. While it was interesting to hear Mr. McEnroe's story in his own words, I felt like he was VERY selective with regard to what he chose to discuss. He was so brutally honest about all matters tennis and yet offered very little about his personal life. His marriage to Tatum O'Neal was barely even mentioned, which is surprising considering that they had 3 children together. I believe that if you are going to write an autobiography you must be willing to tell the good, the bad and the ugly. In my opinion, Mr. McEnroe told only bits and pieces and left his readers wondering about everything in between.
Living the dream is never what you think it is.......2006-11-07
When I picked up the autobiography I only knew of John McEnroe as a star tennis player. The whole story from his meteoric rise to passing his athletic prime is personal, interesting and in many ways suprising. I am a bigger fan having read the book.
Worth buying for the first half.......2006-07-12
I really enjoyed this book. The first half focuses on JMacs tennis career and matches and he gives a lot of insight into his key matches and opponents. He definitely gets rather technical here but I find it interesting to read his analysis of Arthur Ashe's backhand, for example. He doesn't shrink away from doing a set by set analysis of his key matches, but again I find it interesting to read a first hand account of a wimbledon final in intricate detail from the perspective of one of the participants... The second half focuses more on his personal life, which was less interesting to me. Mcenroe is remarkably straightforward about his shortcomings on and off the court, which makes this more honest and less self-aggrandizing than most autobiographies. For anyone interested in the game of tennis and the career and opinions of one of the game's greatest players, this is definitely worth picking up.
Disappointing & Dull!.......2006-06-05
As a long time fan of professional tennis, and John McEnroe in particular, I was tremendously disappointed in this one. Most of the book reads like a box score of a tennis match. McEnroe describes matches in agonizing detail. I was amazed that he remembered these matches so explicitly; perhaps he watched video of them while writing the book. There is painfully little about his personal life. I read Tatum O'Neal's book just before this one, and was curious to read McEnroe's take on their marriage. While I admired him for not taking an opportunity to trash his ex, he doesn't disclose much about why their marriage failed, or why his current marriage succeeds. I suppose he wanted to keep some things private, which is certainly understandable; but if that's the case, why write an autobiography in the first place?

Customer Reviews:
A Fine Instructional Book with Some Unique Observations.......2006-12-01
The author presently coaches in Florida and obviously knows his tennis well. It is similar to many other conventional tennis instructional books. However, it has some things that other books don't take into account. For example, it discusses sports vision which few other books tackle. The concept of eye dominance is seen by some coaches (e.g., Robert Lansdorf, Maria Sharapova's coach) as very important. Scott Williams also makes some interesting observations about footwork on volleys (landing before or after the contact point depends on ball height, etc) which happen to be quite true but rarely commented on. In addition, the author also adds comments from leading tennis coaches or experts. It is a fine comprehensive tennis book that you may want on your shelf simply because it has a slightly different angle on tennis. I have most tennis instructional books and have known or met many tennis authors/coaches; I do recommend this to be one of the finest books over the past decade.
Very Good, Complete Tennis Analysis.......2005-05-14
I bought this book as I have mentally been struggling with nerves in match play. There were a couple of chapters on the psycology of tennis and how to deal with nerves and pressure. I found those helpful. The famous sports psychologist, Jim Loehr was quoted in there quite a bit.
While I did not buy the book for stroke production that is the substantial part of the book and they covered every shot imaginable with emphasis on their "Smart" approach. This is a large book that I could see in any Tennis Pro's office as it is great reference material and you could hand out to students who wanted to read more on a problem. Also, there were quite a few references to drills to preform on different shots.
Overall a very good, informative book.
My #1 tennis book.......2004-07-02
This is the best of instructional books out there. The author does not give you a glam rock romp of who he has instructed on the tour, but instead he gives YOU the "I want to be better than average club player" guy some solid advice on more than just tennis stroke production which you probably already have in place in your game. You actually remember the advice in a match, you use it to improve your game that is in place already and you are given tools to complete your game on and off the court. This is the book that took me pushed me beyond a 4.5.
Best tennis book I have.......2002-08-09
EXCELLENT BOOK !!
I have a few tennis books from Vic Braden and Brad Gilbert which are not bad but this book is by far the best.
So many club players concentrate only on swinging which is why SMART system is tremendously useful to anyone serious about tennis.
For instance, in the past, I never know there is such a great difference of using dominant eye versus non-dominant eye.
I now can see the ball more clearly and quickly.
Serious Tennis Helps You Get Serious About Your Tennis........2002-03-21
This book helped me improve parts of my game that I just could n't improve further with more court time or match play. The expert advice from leaders in the field of professional tennis allowed me to explore avenues of improving my game that are usually reserved as resources of the pro players. Williams' SMARTS system helped me streamline my stroke production and the expert advice helped me to hone my skills into a completely different level of play. Finally some refreshing and useful tennis reading that you can actually apply to your game! Pictures are great. My favorite chapter, because I find the info in it sticks in my head when I'm playing: Performing Under Pressure - Chapter 9. I would like to take a clinic with this author. Will probably carry this book with me to some matches. I'm looking forward to the updated edition to Serious Tennis!

brace yourself for a laugh-out-loud good time.......2003-07-24
This book is completely hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing from the moment I picked up the book. Not recommended for those looking to improve their skills, but it's a great book with a very witty take on common tennis gripes and pet peeves. Finally, here's someone who's put into words what you've thought all along since first picking up your racket. You'll find yourself agreeing with - and applauding -this funny, straight-talking book.

I never received this book! I just want the book or my money!.......2007-01-13
I never got this book and I have tried numerous time to get my money back and I have only gotten the runaround. Why wont you respond to the fact that I never got this book and is anything going to be done about it.
Gramma steals kids' book!.......2006-03-18
How fortunate the younger generation is to have such an amazing resource! I ordered my own copy when my grandson needed his back, and learn something new every time I open it. Great for crossword puzzles, writing for genealogy class, my office job, and just plain letter writitng.
An excellent book for school and for fun.......2004-06-02
This book has a wealth of knowledge about a variety of subjects. First of all, it's a great writing source back. It has lots of great tips and suggestions. There's a section on grammar, and it actually uses humor to make it more entertaining. The book is easy to read and the layout is very attractive. This book is useful for both kids and adults, and there's always something you can use in this book. There's a reference section also with lots of useful information.
Great Book for Teachers and Students!.......2002-07-10
If you've ever had a problem defining preposition, or needed a way to explain ellipses, then you should buy this book. I teach an English class for refugee children, and this book has proved an invaluable teaching tool. My kids find the explanations clear, while I grin when I see higher scores on my grammar quizs. And for a textbook, this is CHEAP!
I highly recomend this book. I myself used in in middle school, refered to it in high school, cleared up obscure grammar points with it in college, and now laud it as a teaching tool. You will not be sorry you purchased this book!
The Best Book Ever.......2000-07-30
I am a seventh grader. I am a reference-aholic. Just in the past few months, I have been trying to renew my reference library. I already have titles like:
1. The World Almanac of 2000, 2. A dictiony, 3. A geographical reference, and many more
A couple of my friends have Write Source 2000. They say its wouderful. Write Source is the type of book I'm looking for because I'm bad at writing. I do not yet have Write Source but I'm going to get it. I say everyone should have it. In my book, it needs five stars. Content in Write Source includes:
sentence structure, types of writing, thinking skills, the writing process, math, history, reading skills, study skills, spelling and vocabulary

A GREAT ENGLISH BOOK.......1998-11-14
This is a great book for when I do projects and research papers. It has grammar and bibliographic information which helps me to do correct term papers. I am 12 years old which makes it easier for me to find things. The best thing about this book is that you don't have to hassle to find a piece of writing information when it is all in one book.
Best source to help get over that awful writers block.......1998-08-21
I have used this book for 9 months and it provides a comprehensive guide to any form of writing. As an adult I have used this book as a source to help prepare materials for colleagues who are undertaking training in wrting skills. Highly recommended.
Helpful - A great resource - Fun to read.......1998-07-27
Even though this book is geared towards children, it was a great resource when I was student teaching in a sixth grade language arts class. You won't be sorry if you buy this one!
Wonderful guide.......1998-03-17
This book is very helpful. It is full of useful info that we all need to know. It tell you how to write letters, biblographys, title pages and many others. This book is a must.
