Book Description
Put your flawed foot forward.
Pick up most leadership books and you’ll find strategies for leveraging your power and minimizing your areas of weakness. But think about the leaders whose names have gone down in history. Most of them were so messed up that, if they were looking for work today, no executive placement service would give them the time of day.
God’s criteria for choosing leaders runs counter to the conventional wisdom. Our culture equates strength with effectiveness, but God favors leaders who know the value of brokenness.
In Leading With a Limp, you’ll discover what makes flawed leaders so successful. They’re not preoccupied with protecting their image, they are undaunted by chaos and complexity, they are ready to risk failure in moving an organization from what is to what should be. God chooses leaders who aren’t deceived by the myths of power and control, but who realize that God’s power is found in brokenness.
If you are a leader–or if you have been making excuses to avoid leading–find out how you can take full advantage of your weakness. A limping leader is the person God uses to accomplish amazing things.
To go deeper, check out the Leading With a Limp Workbook.

Sometimes leading God's way gets you martyred..........2007-07-28
Dan Allender's _Leading with a Limp_makes for a frustrating review because it packs some excellent insights into a book that leaves out far too much to be helpful. Think of this as the classic that might have been.
How does one lead with a limp?
1. Communicate well
2. Acknowledge your leadership limitations (to yourself and others)
3. Be vulnerable, but do so wisely
Those three ideas comprise the majority of the book.
Many have deemed this a profound work. But as someone who has read similar books (John Powell's books from the '70s immediately spring to mind), I wasn't as taken. If you're the more logical, linear type of person, _Leading with a Limp_ might come as a revelation. But if you're already predisposed to valuing feelings over stark rationality, this book won't break any new ground. You're probably already leading with a limp, and this book may only help you acquire a slightly larger cane.
While _Limp_ has some strong spots expounding on the three core ideas mentioned above, it fails miserably in helping those who have adopted limping leadership but got tarred and feathered for it. Sadly, many in ministry practice much of what Allender advocates, but have been run out of town on a rail for doing so. Allender's examples of how to lead the way he envisions never informs readers how to pick up the pieces should such an experiment in a limping leadership style fail miserably with the led. Trust me; as someone with many years in ministry, Allender's ideas can fail spectacularly. It would have been nice to know how to get back on one's feet after being body-slammed for leading with a limp. That lack hurts this book immeasurably.
Yes, read the book. Meditate on the parts you need to improve, but keep expectations low to middling. In fact, expect an angry, confused, or hostile reaction to this leadership style rather than miracles.
Not up to Allender standard.......2007-03-13
This book is good, but not great. I've read a couple of Allender's books that are much better so i expected great things from this one. The title and sunject matter is intriguing and i wanted so much to read about "leading with a limp" from someone who has been through the brokenness process. I sensed instead a tendency towards judgmentalism and arrogance. Maybe my expectations were too high.
Leading with imperfections in view.......2007-01-31
So many leadership books paint the leader as a step above everyone else. And, in some senses, they do need to be. But the effect is a false image of the leader as perfect. Perfectionism is a trap for both the leader and those in his or her care.
Dan Allender successfully navigates this trap by putting his faults in view and showing us appropriate ways to do the same. He leaves perfection in the hands of God and calls us to humbly lead under God's care. He adeptly uses the OT roles of prophet, priest and king to illustrate the different parameters of a leadership role. This book is an important part of a leadership library!
Leading With A Limp.......2006-07-19
I ordered this book along with the workbook and found both very helpful.
Even though I have been told I am a good leader in my church I have been avoiding leading because I have felt I am not one because I am so flawed. I always thought you only become a great leader when you overcome all of your limitations and mistakes. Was I ever wrong. This book tells you how to take your deep wounds, lifelong limps, flaws, and weaknesses to accomplish some of the most amazing things.
Your limp becomes a sign, to the leader and the follower.
Just as in the Bible, God chooses those with flaws and makes effective leaders out of them. And He will do the the same with you.
The oddest thing in the whole book is that the best leaders are the ones who do not seek leadership. The writer says the best leaders are consumed with doubts so they flee leadership and they give away their power. And leadership comes back to them.
This book humbles you. And leaves you with hope. You will see God's power in your brokenness.
A limping leader is the person God uses to accomplish amazing things.
A Must Read for all Senior Pastors.......2006-07-08
Allender's book challenges our hearts and minds to get us to consider the darker, less "fun" side of leading - pain. I found his analysis exceptionally helpful in reflecting back to see where I have let hurts impact the way I lead others. His insight and candor intrigued me and provoked me to change the way I lead and the way I live. I couldn't put it down! It's the best leadership book in recent years for the church, but also for leaders in industry.

Rabbi Rami Shapiro says that he went in search of Zen Judaism and found it in Hasidic literature. In writings that speak of the unity of self, God, and the world, he found a deeply spiritual tradition hidden within Judaism, for which many Jews have looked elsewhere.
From years of work in his own synagogue, Rabbi Shapiro developed 10 spiritual practices that help ground a person in divine reality and achieve balance in internal and external affairs. Perhaps you don't associate meditation or "ethical consumption" with the Torah, but Shapiro convincingly demonstrates their value to, and history within, Judaism. Eight other practices, such as attention, generosity, and kindness make up Shapiro's metaphorical Minyan. As the ties binding all things become more and more evident in this book, the necessity of persistent self-development also becomes clear. Shapiro places the self as a necessary link in a community, thereby providing us with the refuge of solitude along with the power and love of community.
Neither a conservative Hasidic nor a head-in-the-clouds mystic, Shapiro offers a detailed, tested way of Jewish spiritual growth and fulfillment.

Thoughtful and passionate.......2001-05-26
This is an extremely interesting meditation on by a man who is passionately committed to living a life which is both solidly grounded in Jewish thought and tradition, and at the same time approaches the transcendent through mysticism. Fortunately, Judaism has had threads of mystical tradition for centuries, and this book provides detailed instructions on how to incorporate these techniques into your life.
However, this is not primarily a how-to book, but rather is the nearly poetic expression of deep comtemplation and experience of an encounter with the transcendent through the medium of Jewish prayer, ethics and ritual.
The prose clearly reflects the passion Rabbi Shapiro brings to his subject, so the book is an appealing reading experience. It is also a book which nearly cries out for rereading and serious thought. You do not have to be Jewish, or agree with everything the author says in order to find great value in this book. If nothing else, it is a case study in making traditional religion meaningful for contemporary people.
"Yesh" and "Ayin" -- Being and Emptiness.......2001-04-26
Shapiro is a Jewish liberal Rabbi and an award winning poet/essayist...Shapiro holds to the belief that anyone can become spiritually enlightened and in order to assist an individual to reach this goal he has developed a ten-fold method called Minyan. But his is not the traditonal Minyan from Rabbinic law, a quorum of ten Jews, the minimum necessary for the performance of any religious service. His Minyan refers to the practice of meditation, repetition, inspirational reading, attention, generosity, kindness, dream interpretation, ethical consumption, self-perfection, and Sabbath. The maim of Minyuan is to attain d'vekut, oneness with God, seeing both Being and Emptiness as expressions of God, of becomming conscious of both the relative and the absolute. The key to spiritual awakening is "Chabad," the temporary annihilation of your sense of separateness.
Although Shapiro's method hinges on the esoteric and breaks away from conventional Jewish thought, the underlying value of his message is one of universal application, with no embedded dogmatism, a source of inspiration for people of all faiths.
Enlivening mitzvoth, kashrut, kavvanah for the world today........2000-03-15
This book presents views of core elements of Judasim (e.g. mitzvoth, kashrut) from the perspective of today's knowledge, adding new life & meaning to them for enlightened individuals, and proceeds to offer suggestions on how to incorporate these consciously into our daily lives.
Worth rereading, and even rereading.......1999-11-10
Rabbi Rami Shapiro is one of the most informed and responsible liberal-Jewish rabbis writing today. He is always worth a read, and this book is no exception even though I disagree with large portions of it.
His opening chapters in particular are excellent; he presents what he calls "The Teaching" (a carefully nuanced version of quasi-Hasidic panentheism) succinctly and intelligibly. From there, he builds to a list of ten practices adapted from Jewish tradition and designed to increase one's awareness of Rabbi Shapiro's panentheistic G-d.
I won't detail my agreements and disagreements here; let it suffice to say that I have some significant ones of each (particularly regarding what I see as important errors in the ethical and economic foundations of "eco-kashrut"). But Rabbi Shapiro's graceful prose and thoughtful ruminations will provoke you to explorations of your own whether you end up agreeing with him or not. What Rabbi Shapiro is clearly _most_ concerned about is that Jews care about being Jews. His stimulating work will undoubtedly promote that aim.
Very good, even for a non-Jew.......1999-09-16
I'm not Jewish, but my wife is, and she suggested that I read this book. I must say that I am glad she did. What pleased me the most about "Minyan" was the way that Rami focused on spiritual principles and not dogma. I personally feel that there are spiritual truths that are manifest in all beliefs, and any book that shows how to incorporate those principles into daily life is a book that I find rewarding. This book is not only well written, but it offers practical suggestions for individuals seeking to foster spiritual development in their lives, regardless of religious affiliation.

Book Description
It’s time to turn your weaknesses into your greatest strengths as a leader.
We’ve been taught that leaders will never achieve greatness unless they overcome their limitations and minimize their mistakes. But the biblical pattern is just the opposite: God chooses people who have major flaws and makes them effective leaders, not in spite of their weaknesses but because of them.
This workbook takes you from the frustration of feeling hampered by your limitations to a place of effective leadership, where God uses all of who you are in leading others. Based on the core principles from the book Leading With a Limp, this workbook will guide you to:
·Gain a clear understanding of why God has placed you in leadership
·Recognize how God is powerfully using the very things you consider to be your worst qualifications for leadership
·Overcome feelings of being stuck or defeated by your mistakes
·Practice authentic leadership, which compels others to follow you.
You will discover powerful and unexpected insights as you work through personal inventories, studies in biblical leadership, revealing discussion questions, and stories from contemporary leaders who gained effectiveness through authentic brokenness. With this workbook as a guide, you can turn what you once considered to be major liabilities into the greatest assets you possess as a leader.

Essential!.......2007-08-31
Many spend a lot of time perfecting their skills inorder to improve and maximize their job or leadership efficiency. This author challenges us to maximize that efficiency from a place within that many dare to explore and/or develop. This is absolutely a "must read" for the leader who wants to be the best s/he can be.
Very Valuable.......2006-05-21
I'm a major believer in workbooks, discussion guides, and study guides. This one is no exception. The co-authors have prepared a work book that individuals and small groups can use (if the small group is willing to be lovingly honest). This is the type of book in particular that is most beneficial with a study guide given its very personal nature and application.

Leading with a Limp.......2006-05-20
This book and workbook are very helpful. I believe that Christian leaders whether Senior Pastors, Assistant Pastors, Youth Pastors, missionaries, or lay leaders all have a struggle within when it comes to leading. The problem is that many never talk about it to others. Leading with a Limp brings this struggle into perspective and enlightens the passage that God uses the weak things of this world. If you struggle as a leader in any way this book will be a great help. His discussion on reluctant leaders makes so much sense.

Rewarding.......2006-08-15
It was always daunting to try to read the King James version of the Bible; archaic language, measurements to which modern readers cannot relate, and a general feeling of failure when an average person attempts to read it. I know I was frequently confused and unsure at what I had read!
Not so with the New Living Translation, which reads very well, yet retains all of the meaning of the original translations. Footnotes are liberally scattered in cases of translation ambiguity - and gives alternate possibility. It is nicely bound (hardcover) and the type is sized right for visibility.
What's nice about this Bible is that each day has a different theme, which allows you to read a short example, story, or anecdote as it relates to specific Scripture. Since I just bought this in August, I didn't start with January 1.
Reading the Bible no longer has to be a daunting task, with trying to figure out the "begat"s and the "thine"s and attempting to figure out a "cubit". It's a pleasure to read and makes one want to keep reading!

Outstanding!.......1997-08-08
Loritts' easy to read tribute to his father is a "must read" for any father who is striving to not only "talk the talk" but "walk the walk" with his own children. This down to earth story gripped me from the beginning and I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole book through in one sitting. You won't be dissapointed by learning the lessons that Crawford Lorrits has to offer about loving God and sharing that love with your family.
