Book Description
The personal coach to Lance Armstrong shares the philosophy and program that have not only made him a world-class coach but inspired him to gain control of the rest of his life as well
Chris Carmichael’s outstanding coaching experiences have convinced him that great success in any area of life is only possible if we first achieve an integrated, healthy, and balanced lifestyle. Only by harmonizing what he considers the five essential aspects of life—fitness, nutrition, relationships, career, and health—do we construct the strong, stable, and supportive platform from which we can reach for our dreams.
In his 5 Essentials Program, the coach who guided Lance Armstrong to his record-breaking seven Tour de France championships now provides the empowering tools—including step-by-step action plans—that today’s men need to achieve their personal, professional, and athletic goals while performing at levels thought only possible in youth. There are many books that offer advice on making a change in one specific area of life—whether it is diet, fitness, career advancement, or relationships. The Five Essentials Program provides the integrated approach that really works to release the champion within and create lasting change.
Customer Reviews:
fitting it all in.......2007-05-09
Most athletes feel torn between their sport, job, family and sleep. Too often we focus too much energy on one at the expense of the others. Achieving balance is key to a happy and fulfilling life. Carmichael reveals his own journey (including the struggles) to find this balance in his own life. A very personal look into how even elite athletes struggle to fit it all in. Includes recipes, meal plans and exercise programs, tailored to all fitness levels. Gives beginners a clear path to follow, and offers enough nutritional/balance advice for the advanced athlete seeking to excel without sacrificing other areas of life. Great message.
Good insight into a Performance Lifestyle.......2007-02-26
I'm a raving fan of Chris Carmichael. I thought there were great insights in this book about the idea of "Performance" and "winning" and how you can improve your lifestyle. The book does start really strong, and then seems to turn into a before-and-after diet and exercise book with pages of recipes, and it may seem to get a little bit sidetracked with discussion about improved sexual function. But I overlooked all that because the insights throughout, especially the candid ones from a pro like Chris are invaluable; they are important and can set you on a much better path than most diet and exercise books. This book is a significant departure from the usual stuff. Thanks Chris for putting out a book that really starts to get people thinking differently about their lifestyle.
Excellent read!!!.......2007-02-17
I already knew many of these theories of fitness, eating habits, and lifestyle, yet the reminder from Chris Carmichael came at a great time for me. This is a book that is very inspirational, and yet can produce consistent results if taken seriously.
Whole-Life Tips from Lance Armstrong's Trainer .......2007-01-17
Give credit to Chris Carmichael for not writing another book just focused on fitness. Instead, he takes a holistic approach to fitness, diet and relationships. Emphasizing the need for balance is key, but Carmichael is on stronger footing with the fitness and diet tips.
The only mild quibble I have with the book is that the bulk of it is comprised of recipes. The substantive content is a relatively quick read; if you backed out the recipes, you might barely have enough material to constitute a book.
Carmichael is effective in showing how, ironically, when he was starting up his own fitness business, he got so busy that he neglected his own diet and conditioning. If it can happen to him, it can happen to us.
more recipes.......2007-01-16
The book starts off strong. The reasons that Carmichael gives for writing it are reasons that any middle aged athlete or wanna-be can relate to - aging, schedule conflicts, obligations...
Unfortunately the book quickly becomes just another exercise and recipe book. At this point so much has been written about the pursuit of fitness that it's hard to keep it fresh.
One fitness aspect that Carmichael treats that few others do is agility. He has some agility tests and exercises that don't always show up in the typical 'how to' book.
As another reviewer stated, this book would be excellent for the beginning endurance athlete, or perhaps for someone returning to working out. If you've been at it a few years, you've probably heard it in other words before.

I took it on vacation with me and I couldn't put it down. A great book for aspiring athletes and coaches as well as your average Joe who works 9-5. The coaches discuss a variety of topics from their childhood to how they motivate their players. Any easy read for all ages.
Game of life.......2007-07-24
I've read through Game of Life and I enjoyed it very much. There are so many things to take from this book, not just into sports, but also some reflections on life. I would recommend this book to everybody.
Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27
A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.
Overcome Adversity.......2007-04-12
Anyone looking for inspiration, either for their own life or to share with others, will find a gold mine of quotes here. This book isn't just for sports fans.

The Champion Within.......2006-03-19
Finally a book that deals with the biggest part of any sport...mental! They say that being a goalkeeper is 90% mental yet very few books give you tips on the ins and outs of getting in touch with that part of your game. This book is great at giving you ideas on reaching your champion and bringing it out on the pitch. Not only a great book for directing coaches in this aspect of the job, but also a valuable tool for players to reach their individual successes and full potential.
A great insight into the National Team's training model.......2002-09-12
The most insightful book on what makes or made the US Womans National Team such a success. Great read for Club Directors and Coaches alike to develop their own program based on a proven training model.
Outstanding For All Soccer Coaches.......2001-12-29
Read this over a year ago and re-read recently. In concert with Anson Dorrance's Training Soccer Champions, this is really a terrific book for all soccer coaches - men and women. Very inspirational and informative.
The Greatest Soccer Book Ever.......2001-12-11
Lauren Gregg's "The Champion Within" is filled with realistic knowledge about how to become the best soccer player you can be. This nonfiction book contains inspiring insights from current and previous National Team members. Lauren uses experts in each field to handle ever aspect of the game of soccer. It is also full of special lessons for the athlete and coach. The champions reveal their secrets, how they organized their training and the challenges they overcame along the way. Every page has useful information, like how to be competitive, sports psychology, fitness drills, and tactics. Carin Jennings Gabarra's describes the quatlities of a champion, "A champion is someone who trains when no one is watching," (Gregg xvii). This is just one of many inspiring quotes writen by the leaders in the sport, which really add a personal touch that any young player should be able to relate to. Lauren's belief, and the premise behind successful teams,is that players have a responsibitlity for their own developlement. In her book she provides essential information about training that can be done on your own. It is a comprehensive and innovative soccer training book, desighed specifically for the athlete. The theme is about taking responsibility for perosnal development, that the ability and responsibility for greatness rests with the individual player.
For me this book was hard to put down. I lost sleep over this book. "The Champion Within" is by far the best instructional and inspirational guide to the game of soccer I have ever read. It lets you know that with hard work and dedication you can achieve you goals no matter how high they may be. The book also lets you know what kind of hard work and dedication you must have depending on what you are striving for. I will remember and apply the information in this book in my daily life. I cannot think of one thing I would change from how Lauren Gregg constructed this book. For me, it is absolutely perfect in every aspect.
If you are serious about playing or caoching soccer this is a must read. Probably 30-40% fo this book is appropriate for a player of caoch in any spor, but there is definately plenty of soccer-specific information also. "The Champion Within" is a book for the individuals who are willing to work hard to succeed. This book enpowers players to organize their environments, make approriate choices and understand the scope of what is involed in training for excellence.Lauren Gregg's "The Champion Within" is filled with realistic knowledge about how to become the best soccer player you can be. Graduate Studies.......2000-06-08
Absolutely the best book I've ever read on coaching. This is not soccer 101. It's 451G. I found things in the Psychological Section that I've never seen anywhere else. Dittos for the chapter on Reserves(Subs). The sideboxes, written by the leaders in the sport, really add a personal touch that any young player should be able to relate to. Absolute must read for any player that is serious about the game.

Inspiration at its best........2000-08-21
This book gives us insight into the life of a man who had it all, then lost it in an accident that left him in a condition that could almost be considered a fate worse than death. With incredible strength of purpose he slowly brought himself to the position of one of the world's leading wheelchair athletes, a respected speaker and a happy, whole person. The story of the journey is told with open-hearted candor. He shares the pain and humilation he experienced as well the glory he has achieved. If you want to be uplifted; if you want to be inspired to wake up every morning with the determination to be the best that you can be, then read this book! If Kevin did what he did, then you can, for sure, do what you need and want to do!
Intriguing read about the USA's best paraplegic athlete........1999-05-11
Kevin Saunders' is arguably the greatest paraplegic athlete. The winner of two bronze medals in the past Olympics, Saunders' story -- beginning with the horrific grain elevator explosion that snapped his spine -- through his triumphant sprint to the finish line is a pretty good read. Saunders is no paper hero: he screws up along the way and occasionally gets involved in a laugh-out-loud funny situation. But the main thrust is the motivational message -- you CAN do this. And there's ALWAYS a way. A good afternoon read for teen-agers or adults.

Customer Reviews:
Well made and very inspirational.......2002-04-29
I stumbled upon this audiobook when I was going through a bin of [money] tapes at a local discount store, most of which were that cheap for good reason. Being a "motivational" tape I was immediately skeptical, as I usually am with self-help tapes. But having already picked through everything and deciding that death was preferable to listening to OJ Simpson talk about the "real killer" or other celebrities turned activists turned egomaniacs patting themselves on the back for "caring", I took the chance and bought it. I was expecting a lot of mindless sloganeering designed to hype up your emotions and turn off your brain, but I was pleasantly surprised that this tape is in fact very constructive as well as inspiring. Jenner comes off extremely articulate and likable, describing his aimless beginnings as a student content with mediocrity, to suddenly grasping hold of a lofty goal and pursuing it to the point of obsession. Then to achieve it only to once again slowing descend back in to obscurity, mediocrity and aimlessness, until he finally (with a little help from true love) grabbed hold of his life again and now pursues it with as much success and passion as he pursued the Olympic gold. He talks a lot of sense and his experiences are easy to relate to, helping you focus on what really holds one back from taking chances and pursuing success. I've got a lot of audiobooks, probably close to two dozen, but this is one of maybe three tapes that I'll throw in my car stereo as I go about my business and still enjoy listening to it. Good work Bruce!

Customer Reviews:
Couldn't Raise my Child Without It.......2007-05-23
I love this book. I'm a first time mom and I have no idea what I'm doing but this book covers everything. From taking a temperature correctly to CPR. Wonderful!!!
Great Resource.......2007-01-13
Book is full of wonderful information, especially for worried new parents. It covers from health to discipline and difficult subjects. End pages are full of various useful appendixes. Also includes space to write down personal information.
However, two major caveats. While the information is complete enough that most people will find the resources invaluable, it is written from a Christian perspective. If you're in disagreement with "traditional" views on some of the varying hot topics, then some of the advice may be uncomfortable to flip past and thus not useful.
The book also isn't for the "crunchy" people. Aside from the shortage (a very rare thing for this book) of information in this area, there are several places where those seeking more "natural" or "relaxed" parenting methods are discouraged from following through.
Quote:
"Home birth is usually chosen by those with a fervent conviction that this is the most natural and least intrusive way to bring a child into the world. But home birthing compromises safety for the sake of a particular style of birth experience."
Must have resource for parents.......2007-01-09
I own this book and have bought it several times as a baby gift becuase I use it all the time! This book not only contains medical advice, but also behaviorial. I have four children use this often. In fact I used it just this weekend to look up my baby's symptoms. The book contains a lot of information related to babies all the way up to teenagers. It is broken down in to age ranges and then into subcatagories, so that I think even non-readers would not be intimidated.
There is a handbook on children!.......2006-08-05
This book covers everything from attitude to sickness. Anytime I'm not sure what they are sick with or their behavior is out of whack I look it up in the book & it usually has the soulution. I have made this my number one gift to new moms & dads.
Best Book on Childcare I've Read.......2006-06-28
As a mother of four, I've read many, many books on childcare, and this is by far the best that I've read. Many topics are discussed in this book that aren't even mentioned in many others. I give one to every new mom that I know!

Book Description
Esau have I hated . . .
Sara Louise Bradshaw is sick and tired of her beautiful twin Caroline. Ever since they were born, Caroline has been the pretty one, the talented one, the better sister. Even now, Caroline seems to take everything: Louise's friends, their parents' love, her dreams for the future.
For once in her life, Louise wants to be the special one. But in order to do that, she must first figure out who she is . . . and find a way to make a place for herself outside her sister's shadow.

Newberry definitely UNDESERVING!.......2007-07-17
When I picked up this book, I thought it would be great. It had a good cover, and I thought it would be about Louise fighting for a place in the world, and then happily finding it. I never even DREAMED that it would be as REPULSIVE as a girl falling in love (SHES 14) with a 70-year-old MAN! And Caroline. Though Caroline did sometimes get ahead of herself, and though she was arrogant, she never knew what drove Louise to have such an attitude against her. She was quite clueless about Louise's angry, despairing, jealous feelings. So why was Louise so sad? I mean, I know Caroline was treated better, but that's sometimes how it is in family politics. And when she had someone all along: Call. Call was her childhood best friend, and he was a great comfort. Or would've been to ME. He was always there for her even though she had that attitude due to her problems. But then she fell in LOVE with a 70-year-old who should've married her grandma? WHAT WAS THAT? I am just appalled at the THOUGHT! And then she got all mad again at Caroline when she got engaged to Call. It just so RANDOMLY said that she fell in love with Call when he got engaged to Caroline, and then she wanted him back! Well...im sorry, but heLLO? HE WAS THERE ALL ALONG. And now suddenly when he got engaged she wants him? That makes no sense. But this was the stupidest part...the ending: She has become a doctor and lives on a moutain away from Caroline and her family like she wanted to, and is a doctor. Then this farmer comes in with 2 sick babies, and she tends them, and they marry. AND IT DOESNT EVEN SAY IF SHE LOVED HIM!
The only thing OK about the book is that it doesnt end all happy and it displays real life a BIT, except for the fact that she can fall in love with a man who's 70. THAT is not what ANYONE would do...unless they're around 70. You know, even 10-year-olds like me could write better books. In fact, I think I'm going to go try right noW!
I know this is not a good word to use but it was crap, crap, crap, crap. I hated the book...what a WASTE OF TIME!
P.S. Bridge to Teribithia also by her is pretty sad, but it is really good and is much better!
Not worth the medal.......2007-07-06
Jacob Have I Loved appeared a book of good morals. Plus, with the medal on the front cover why wouldn't you try it out? I was truly disappointed because the book had no morals at all. This story starts out with a young girl, Sara Louise, trying to find her own talents and self-confidence. She is continually hindered by her constant comparision to her beautiful and talented twin, Caroline. Sara Louise struggles inwardly with the favored attention Caroline receives. Also, Sara's parents fail to understand (and ignore) her depressing attitude (that seems to linger to end of the book). Her "granny" plays continual politics between the twins and not bothering to hide it either. Sara Louise's only comfort is with an old man of a grouch, whom she has a crush on. Completely disgusting, to which the author writes as "normal and acceptable". Sara Louise also fails to recognize how kind her best friend (I forgot his name) is for sticking up with her griping mood. Though he is described as "unintelligent", when he grows up to a young man and marries Caroline he suddenly becomes "intelligent". No explanation as to why. Meanwhile, Sara Louise notices her friend's change of mind and starts liking him right when he announces his engagment to Caroline. She's heartbroken and is forced (by her own will) to leave the island on which she lives to the mountains. There, she becomes a nurse and treats the mountain people. From here, the author rushes the ending on a few pages to say she married a farmer with a handful of kids...the end. No explanation if Sara Louise truly loved the farmer, and she never resolves her emotions on how different she is from Caroline in a unique way. This book DID NOT deserve the medal unless the Newberry standards are so low that a ten-year old who wrote a depressing story like this could win the medal. I should try.
Good Ending.......2007-03-27
I found the beginning of the book to be a little boring. Which is probably because I did not understand some of the terms related to fishing; especially since I am not from a small fishing island. Yet I also understand that an author needs to develop the setting of a story so the reader has some sort of background of where the characters are from.
However as the book went on I found it to be more entertaining, especially when I got to the parts about the manner in which Sara Louise describes her sister. My heart did go out to Sara Louise because I felt bad for her, because she was not recognized for what she could do.
At the end of the book I did find closure, which is something I need at the end of a book. The reason I need it is because then I feel like I truly finished the story and feel relieved. The book definitely had a good ending and it tells what happens to everyone. I know closure is a big deal to me so I figured it might be for other readers as well.
Is Your Future Predetermined?.......2007-03-05
In biblical times Jacob and Esau were brothers. And you'd think since they were twins they'd be treated pretty much alike, but they weren't. It turns out that Jacob is given the "Blessing" even though Esau is the first one born and traditionally entitled to this favored treatment. It turns out, too, that fate had predetermined this.
In this modern-day story, Sara Louise, like Esau--a twin and first born--feels unloved and unable to get the respect and attention her prettier, more talented and better-liked twin sister, Caroline, enjoys. And Sara feels jealousy and bitterness. Was this predetermined, too? Is this her unhappy fate? Even she is not sure. And it will be tough for you to decide, too,...until the end. (Suitable for junior high and up.)
An adult review.......2007-02-14
This book focuses on a young tomboy named Louise, who grows up on a small island in the US named Rass in the WWII era. No matter how hard se works to be the good daughter her sister still shines brighter her. You follow Louise's life as she grows up, losing her hard earned crabbing money to her sister, her parents praise, her cosmetics, and eventualy her closest friend who is a boy. Is their anything her sister won't take? Yes. Louises determination to grow up.
This is a great book I read it when I was 12, agian when I was 16, and at 22 I finaly bought it and read it agian. Anything Katherine Paterson writes will leave the reader touched and knowing they are not alone in the trials of life.

WORTH GETTING!.......2000-12-02
I am teacher of reading and language for 6 and 7 grades. I purchased this CD to give me some additional resourses with this book. Jacob Have I Loved is a wonderful story. My 7th graders really enjoyed it. The LitPlans made my job so much easier. I didn't have to make up chapter tests or vocabulary tests. I was able to focus more on the literature part of the book and not worry about assessment. My students are at an average to below average reading ability and did not have difficulty understanding the questions. The LitPlans offer "Free Response" style questions as well as "Multiple Choice" questions. Puzzles were also given to supplement my lessons. I will definitely purchase more of them. Right now I am interested in purchasing LitPlans for "Animal Farm", and "To Kill a Mockingbird". I say "BUY IT", you will be glad you did!

This book is a 30 day devotional. It contains inspirational nuggets and poetry. There are scripture references for each day. The devotionals are short and inspirational. This book would make a great gift for someone who is traveling or perhaps a busy housewife who has only snippets of time for reading. It can easily be tucked into a purse or suitcase, to be pulled out and read while waiting at the airport or doctor's office.

"Well, I can't believe I'm doing this, but here I go. Into the abyss..."
With these words, Alex Markham begins writing the story of his deceased older brother. David was a star, beloved by many, but understood by few.
Now his story has fallen into the hands of the younger brother who spent his whole life in David's shadow. But for Alex, this is not a tribute. It's a chance to tell the world the real story...the dark story. The one no one knows. The one no one wants to know.
For only Alex knew the real David Markham...the man behind the fame, the booze, and the drugs. But maybe...just maybe...not even Alex knew the real David.
What will ensue as he writes is a journey of discovery...not only of David's life, but of his own as well.

Quite surprised by the ending..........2007-06-30
I really didn't see the ending to this one coming at all -- it definitely surprised me, which was quite refreshing after reading so many books that are so formulaic in their structure. There's nothing worse than being able to predict how the book is going to end -- so that said this book definitely will surprise you.
I started reading the book and at first I had a hard time with it simply because I couldn't see where it was going. However, after a while I found the relationship between the brothers to be similar to other books/stories about sibling relationships where one sibling succeeds and the other feels like they are living in the shadows (John Grisham's book "The Summons" comes to mind, as does Sam Shepard's play "True West"). Jacob Have I Loved is written in the first person narrative and tells the story from the younger brother's point of view, so you never actually know what the older brother thinks or how he views the sibling relationship -- you only see the one perspective. This single focus I found to be a pleasant change from most books where you hear the thoughts of all the characters -- here there is only one voice, that of the book's author.
That said, as I stuck with the book I found I was up reading it until 2 a.m. just to finish it and see how it ended (keep in mind I had to be up for work at 6 a.m.) ;o). Tired as I was, I really didn't see the ending coming...
I'm not sure saying I "enjoyed" the book is the right thing to say (since it's about a dysfunctional relationship), but in the end I found I couldn't put it down until I finished it so I guess that's the real hallmark of a good book.

A Good Book.......2002-11-06
I really liked this book. It was about a girl that lived on the island Rass. Her sister,Caroline, was so perfect. They treated Caroline better than they treated her. This book was so awesome! I definitly reccomend it for young audiences or for old audiences. This is an all around good book. You might think its boring at first but you have to hang in there, because the end is GREAT!

Jacob Have I Loved.......2001-07-30
"Jacob Have I Loved" was most definitely the best book I have ever read. It is an amazing novel. Katherine Paterson is a wonderfully honest author with a dazzling sense of creativity. I recommend this book to almost any good reader, ages 10 and above. It is a book that should not be missed.
Arian.......2000-04-06
Jacob Have I Loved, by Katherine Patterson, is a book that I highly reccomend to all readers around in the world. It is a great book that has several themes such as: love, jealousy, and goals. These were the themes that were shown most in the book. It explains the pros and cons of having a twin sister. It also shows the love between Mr. and Mrs. Bradshaw towards each other. What I mostly love about this book is, how Lousie realizes that she is not in her sister's shadow and she dosent feel hate towards her. Lousie matured and finally accomplished her goal, which was to leave Rass and have a great life. The thing that keeps you wanting to read this book without putting it down, is how Katherine Patterson makes you wait for eveything. She lead you to Louise accomplishing her goal in life, but she made you wait. Thus, making this book one of the best books I have ever read. I thank Mr. Rome, my reading teacher, for picking such a great book out, for us to read. In closing, i would just like to say that this book helped me in many ways realize how my life could be, how it could turn out, and what i can do to make my life better. I am postively sure that this book will help me in my future, and I know I will never forget the book JACOB HAVE I LOVED!
Jacob Have I Loved.......2000-03-04
Jacob Have I Love was a very intellegent book. It was very realistice. At times it gets confussing, but after awhile it all comes togethger. The book is sad at parts, I feel sorry for "Weeze." She seemed so lonley. I liked the ending, it proved that people really do get good things, no matter what they have done.
