This is a great resource book for anyone wanting to plan and implement meaningful outdoor activities for elementary or early junior high kids. The author lists activities along with materials and plans for carrying out the activity in an organized and easy to follow format. This book would be excellent for teachers, outdoor ed. staff, scout leaders, etc. who are building a personal library of materials to use while working with kids.

Product Description

Marquette University Men's Basketball has a long and storied tradition. Tales of Marquette Basketball takes a look at the high, and low points from McGuire to Crean and everything in between by weaving personal interviews with many great Marquette players and coaches including Hank Raymonds, Rick Majerus, Mike Deane, Tom Crean, Glenn 'Doc' Rivers, Jim McIlvaine, Travis Diener and Tony Smith as they give insight to memorable moments, both on and off the court. Under the colorful Coach Al McGuire, Marquette University basketball flourished as one of the top collegiate programs in the country. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the "super salesman" made successful pitches to some of America's finest young players. These young men experienced an entirely different way of life. But the life lessons they learned from Al prepared them for success-in the basketball arena-and beyond. Behind the scenes stories, based on numerous interviews, will help give unique insight to this mesmerizing personality. Of course, the focal point is that "magic carpet ride" to the 1977 NCAA Championship! Many observers wondered if the once proud Marquette program would ever again approach the standards set by Al McGuire. Exit Bob Dukiet, enter Kevin O'Neill, in 1989. The ultra intense assistant coach at Arizona used salty language, but in his fifth season at the helm, "K.O." took Marquette to the NCAA's Sweet Sixteen. In his fourth season, Crean and All-American Dwyane Wade led Marquette to the Conference USA championship and a return to the Final Four! Somehow, the Marquette program had come full circle. Before his death, Al McGuire spent hours just talking with Tom Crean. In some ways, Al became the father Tom never had. We hope you enjoy these Tales of Marquette Basketball.

This is great for Marquette die-hards but it could've been better. The interviews are thrown together so it's like hearing one side of a conversation. There's little exposition or writing to weave the stories together.

Book Description

In this widely acclaimed history of modern China, Jonathan Spence achieves a fine blend of narrative richness and efficiency. Praised as "a miracle of readability and scholarly authority," (Jonathan Mirsky) The Search for Modern China offers a matchless introduction to China's history.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just a great resource on China.......2007-09-19

I've read over twenty books on China, and this is one of the best resources out there. At first I was caught off guard that Spence started in the 16th or 17th century, however, it provides a lot of insight into China's development and goes into detail about China's interactions with the West and their reactions. I especially found the opium trade quite interesting and also the fact that new dynasties had to constantly reconquer parts of China. One truly begins to appreciate the difficulty in governing a country so large and diverse as China.

5 out of 5 stars An Unponderous History.......2007-05-24

To truly know China, it is essential to have a grasp of its rich history. But that history is so vast and dense, it is easy to get lost. This book is an admirable guide. For a review of contempory issues, see my own book: The Coming China Wars: Where They Will Be Fought and How They Can Be Won

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-16

This is probably my favorite Chinese history book that I've read. Its easily quotable, well written, and intriguing. I found it to be clear cut and concise, but not bogged down by elevated language, or too simplistic. Its a shame books like this one are not used more in Universities.

4 out of 5 stars A nice introduction.......2007-03-23

The book makes a good impression. It is an eloquently written, absorbing narrative, attentive to detail and yet broad in scope. The book nicely integrates discussion of political history with discourse on society and culture of modern China.

It is ostensibly weaker towards the end - barely a fraction of the book deals with post-1949 China. The PRC's foreign policy during the Cold War unfortunately receives scant attention; the Cultural Revolution is addressed as if in passing. Sino-US rapprochement is barely mentioned (with a questionable assertion that it was mainly a product of pressure on the part of the Chinese oil lobby).

The part on the democratic movement in China was an interesting read, but it overshadowed other important issues in the last 20-30 years of China's political and economic development.

Overall, excellent book, certainly one of the best introductions to modern history of China out there, highly recommended for new students of Chinese history as a starting point.

5 out of 5 stars timely and important work.......2006-11-12

The scale of this book is vast, and the scholarly undertaking is impressive. In the modern world with Chinese influence growing all the time an understanding of Chinese history is increasingly important. A must-read!

    Book Description

In 1976, China's "education revolution" was being hailed by foreign observers as an inspiration for all low-income countries. By 1980, the Chinese themselves had disavowed the experience, declaring it devoid of even a single redeeming virtue. This is the first comprehensive book to cover the whole sweep of twentieth-century Chinese education, and in particular to provide a detailed study of what occurred in the countryside under the radical Maoist education experiments of the Cultural Revolution.

      Book Description

Edmund Fung examines an important phase of development in China's long quest for democracy. The momentum for democracy, he contends, grew strongest between 1929 and 1949 through civil opposition to the one-party rule of the Guomindang. The Nationalist era contained the germs of a reformist, liberal order, the legacy of which can be seen in the pro-democracy movement of the post-Mao period. This book fills an important gap in the historical literature on Chinese intellectuals between May Fourth radicalism and the Chinese Communists' accession to power.

This story of a Buddhist monk search for his place in the wheel of life is candidly written and enjoyable. Chen-hua has very interesting things to say about the practice of Buddhism in China. He finds abuses of power at several of the monasteries he visits. A must read for someone looking for an introduction to Chinese Buddhist doctrine and principle.

The U.S.S. EnterpriseTM journeys to Lorca, a beautiful world with a feudal culture where the inhabitants wear masks to show their rank and station. Captain Picard and an away team don masks of their own to begin a quest for the planet's ruler and the great Wisdom Mask that the leader traditionally wears. Their mission is to establish diplomatic relations.

But shortly after transporting, Picard and his party lose contact with the ship, and Commander Riker leads a search party down to the planet to find them.

Both men, are unaware that their searches, indeed, the ship's entire mission are part of the plan of a madman, a madman who is setting the stage for a trap that will ensnare both U.S.S. Enterprise landing parties, and leave him to seize control of the awesome Wisdom Mask as well as the planet Lorca itself.

                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Definitely good, but not quite great.......2003-06-07

I've been thinking about what to say here throughout my reading of the book, which I finished this afternoon. At various points in the story, I've had conflicting opinions on the book, so here's what I think now that I've finished it.

The back of the book presented a very intriguing premise -- the Enterprise visits a culture where everyone wears a mask as part of their natural clothing; to reveal your face was equated with revealing any sexual or otherwise intimate part of your body. Kinda cool.

Unfortunately, this book suffers from a plague that has attacked many early TNG novels -- that of the author representing the characters in a way that doesn't really match up with the on-screen versions. Now, of course, this can probably be blamed on a couple of things: the author probably started writing this novel while the series was still in its first season, and so he wasn't as familiar with the characters as we are; the show itself hadn't developed the characters very far yet, and so on-screen writers had the same difficulties, propagating the problem; not to mention new character developments that hadn't yet been seen on-screen at the time of writing, but which were well-known by the time of publication (i.e., Wesley being his own man and the arrival of Dr. Pulaski). I give John Vornholt the benefit of the doubt here because he has written many Trek novels since then, continues to write them today, and this was his first. So I expect improvement from him, and others, as time goes on.

Now, there is one more strike against this novel that I have to mention. That is that it takes a hokey turn towards the beginning. When the first landing party beams down, they realize "Oops! The Enterprise computer can make a great Earl Grey tea, but it doesn't really know what masks are." So they come up with three silly halloween masks, only one of which is humanoid-looking. (Why not all wear copies of that one? Oh, well.)

But once you get past these two early setbacks, the novel takes a definite turn for the better. The plot, while not keeping very much suspense going, does keep you interested. And there are some interesting turns at the end that I wasn't expecting. Unfortunately, I can't elaborate on the plus points of the book without bringing in some spoilers.

The ambassador's character is slighlty unbelievable, but does a good job of keeping the away teams on their toes. Picard has an interesting romance that reminded me of Kirk's approach to the ladies. And plus the ideas suggested by a completely masked culture are interesting. Being known by your place in society, or your chosen caste, and only secondarily by your individual identity, is a different way to live, and the Enterprise crewmembers are rightfully awed by the lifestyle.

4 out of 5 stars Behold the Wisdom Mask.......2002-11-18

This is an excellent Star Trek: TNG book. Vornholt brings to life the planet of Lorca and the mask wearing society that calls it home. The Enterprise crew must deal with a manipulating ambassador and a visit from the Ferengi. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Planetary Culture.......2002-09-04

This is kind of unique for a Star Trek book. There is a lot of time and detail spent on a culture that was never featured in the television series.

The basic story is that Captain Picard, Deanna Troi and Lt. Worf accompany an ambassador on an mission to make contact with representatives of the planet Lorca, who are descended from a human theatrical troupe. The away team is cut off from the Enterprise because of volcanic activity interfering with communications with the ship. Commander Riker proceeds to take Data, Dr. Pulaski and 2 security officers down to the planet to find the Captain. A basic storyline, and not really worthy of such a high rating.

However, the culture of Lorca is fascinating. Everyone on the planet wears a mask. The masks show social status within the community, and they announce a person's place in society. There is a lot of detail about this very fascinating culture. The intricacies of Lorcan custom and the way the various Enterprise crew members react to Lorcan society make up the heart of this book.

Now there are a few problems. Commander Riker is portrayed as an almost hysterical person, who freaks out when they can't contact the Captain. He is in such a rush to get down to the planet that he forgets to provide his away team with masks, and risks offending the planet's population. The character of the Ambassador is rather unbalanced, and it is difficult to believe that Starfleet wouldn't catch his person's personality deficencies. Captain Picard's romantic interlude is unbelievable, and almost comical.

However, in spite of these problems this is a good book. It is a fairly fast read, and of all the Next Generation and Original Series books I've read this has the most interesting depiction of a planetary culture. I would love to see another book about the planet Lorca, and it wouldn't even have to be a Star Trek book.

5 out of 5 stars One of TNG's top five.......2002-06-11

This was one of the first Trek books I'd read. For me it started kind of slow and I'd even put it down for a while. When I'd picked it up again and started anew from the beginning, I couldn't believe I'd ever put it down. This is the one that put Vornholt on the map in the Trek novel world. Extremely good character development and carry through. It was wonderful to see Captain Picard in a situation you wouldn't ordinarily think he'd be in. Overall a huge thank you to John Vornholt for a memorable book. Unfortunately this one's not on the shelves anymore if you haven't read it, good luck finding it and if you do you won't regret it.

                3 out of 5 stars Not bad........2001-12-17

A perfectly passable, unspectacular Star Trek story; the characters (with the exception of Ambassador Lewis, who is rather two dimensional and implausible; how DID he ever pass the psych screens in order to get into the Federation diplomatic corps?) are handled well, and the plot is a perfectly acceptable action-adventure story. The setting is novel and reasonably well-handled, and the writing is competent.

The book breaks no new ground, and does nothing to advance our understanding of the characters or the Federation, but it's an acceptable light read, worth the time it takes to read it for a Star Trek fan if not for the uninitiated.

5 out of 5 stars best of the best.......1999-09-02

"Masks" is THE best ST book I have read (and I almost have them all!!!) The world on which the action takes place is inventive and the use of masks within the culture is simply genius! Read it!

                        1 out of 5 stars The worst next-gen novel I've ever read........1999-06-26

This book is the worst of the worst and you'd be well advised to shun it like the plague. The plot is THE stupidest ever and the ending is very trite.

3 out of 5 stars Be careful, this book is an abridged edition.......1998-10-29

This book isn't the same as the full version published by Pocket Books. It has been abridged by another author (Joanne Suter), and is only 103 pages long. The Pocket edition is 277 pages long. Globe Fearon is an educational publisher, and this edition is for schools.
