Book Description

Now fully revised—the perennially popular guide to choosing the right college

Prospective college students and their parents have been relying on Loren PopeÂ's expertise since 1995, when he published the first edition of this indispensable guide. This new edition profiles 41 colleges—all of which outdo the Ivies and research universities in producing performers, not only among A students but also among those who get Bs and Cs. Contents include:

• Evaluations of each schoolÂ's program and “personality”
• Candid assessments by students, professors, and deans
• Information on the progress of graduates

This new edition not only revisits schools listed in previous volumes to give readers a comprehensive assessment, it also addresses such issues as homeschooling, learning disabilities, and single-sex education.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nothing particularly new from previous books.......2007-10-14

A friend loaned me Loren Pope's previous two books. I read them and decided I would like to see what Pope has to say in 2007. Well, nothing particularly different from the other two books. I didn't need to purchase this book. The one thing this book does do differently is give a more thorough description of the 40 recommended schools. Loren Pope's books are an excellent resource when beginning the college search. i wish i had read her books before sending my oldest daughter to college.

3 out of 5 stars Fiske is better.......2007-09-14

I ordered this one with the Fiske and Ivy League titles. This one ranks at the bottom. Information contained inside not as detailed and left us with with college admission questions. Check it out for yourself at a bookstore before you make your purchase here.

5 out of 5 stars This WILL change the way you think about colleges........2007-08-04

This book is a must for anyone looking at colleges. After reading another Pope book "Looking Beyond the Ivy League...," I was already leaning away from any large colleges. I then read "The Gatekeepers" which was fascinating, but leaves one with the feeling that they should be grateful if a college accepts them.

Colleges That Change Lives reminds us that WE are the customer. WE are choosing the school and we should do it by keeping in mind that our children's education is more important than being able to say our child went to Harvard, Yale, etc. There are schools that welcome our children. Why should we put our children through the stress of applying somewhere they are not likely to get in, where they are not likely to get the close attention most of us need to learn better?

The one thing that stands out in my mind about the highly-selective, well-known schools after reading this book is that we assume the colleges are good (and best for our child) based on the kind of students they accept.

The results are another thing. We, as consumers, assume that if the "best" students get in to those schools, they automatically do well and are assured a successful future. What do we base that on? Assumptions aren't enough.

Read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Go ahead - get off the prestige merry-go-round.......2007-06-23

This is a great book. Forget about all you think you know about colleges - it's 99% myth anyway. Learn about some excellent schools (many of which will give you great financial aid) that you might not have thought about.

My son attends one of these schools (Denison U) and it has been fabulous. In addition to very personal attention, accessible profs, small classes, friendly kids, and a really beautiful campus, they gave him an extraordinary scholarship and he was able to do a paid research internship his second year. In spite of having been accepted at much better known (and higher "ranked") schools, he has never looked back.

Broaden your search and start here.

5 out of 5 stars Be sure to check financial solvency of schools!!.......2007-06-22

The book was very interesting and a great guide, we thought. My son chose to attend Antioch College based on the wonderful reviews and his own feelings after visiting the school. The Board of Trustees voted just last week to CLOSE the school July, 2008. Hence, he is looking for another school as I write. I am a more than a little concerned about using this guide again!

Book Description

Drawing together a distinguished cast of international contributors, this new edition offers a timely collection of essays that analyze key issues, institutions, laws, and policies for the protection of the global environment. In addition to crucial historical context on the development of global environmental organizations and treaties, chapter authors offer both engaging discussions of current and critical global environmental agreements and insight into national and international implementation of sustainable development principles. Returning contributors have thoroughly revised and updated their chapters, while six brand new chapters examine such important topics as regime theory, climate change, hazardous chemical controls, perspectives of the developing world, and the European Union's and United States' international environmental policies. A useful chronology of global environmental policy and a list of acronyms further aid students in critical reading, as well as review and study.

Book Description

In this revised and expanded guide, College Placement Bureau Director Loren Pope profiles forty colleges that excel at developing potential, values, initiative, and risk--taking in a wide range of students. This new edition includes a revised group of colleges and for the first time addresses the issues of home schooling, learning disabilities, and single--sex education. Pope encourages students to be hard--nosed consumers when visiting colleges, and shows how the college experience can enrich every young person's life, whether they are "A," "B," or "C" students.

Included in the profiles are:

• Evaluations of each school's program and "personality"
Interviews with undergraduates, professors, and deans
Information on what happens to the graduates and what they think of their college experience.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful antidote for those pre-college jitters.......2007-07-19

It is so difficult not to get trapped into the "name-dropping" college game. This book not only introduces you to 40 colleges you may not have heard of, it helps you realize that looking at any college with fresh eyes is the key to the application process. By discussing the salient points that make each listed college noteworthy, Pope helps to outline experiences we may have never considered that would make a college great.

Each student has a unique learning style and personality. Pope futher delves into why these mostly smaller colleges can tap into what each student needs, to help them achieve their best during the college experience. With college costs escalating rapidly, choosing a college that will help each student flourish becomes even more critical. This book will help parents and students more effectively outline what they need to find in a college.

Further, I was impressed that his list included many different types of colleges - from one whose courses consist only of classic books, to those that cater to the outdoor student - which helped me to see that any college bound student should be able to find a college that fits.

I would highly recommend this book to any high school student and their parents.

4 out of 5 stars Good, BUT...............2007-05-04

Why are there no entries for the West? Could the author seriously not find any California or Arizona institution that meets the criteria? Besides that, this revised edition like others have stated seems repetative. Let's have a new version, hmmm? This one is 7 years old now, I think it's time.

On the positive side, it is great to know the truth about highly regarded institutions such as Harvard. Our children all aspire to Universities such as these because it's such a long standing myth that you will be among the best and be taught by the best and that a degree from such a place virtually guarantees your success. I would never have imagined my daughter might be taught by a teacher's assistant who barely speaks English or lectured to until she falls into a boredom induced coma. I hope we can find her a school with community spirit that will inspire her!

5 out of 5 stars colleges that change lives.......2007-02-20

if you know someone making a decision on where to go to college, please buy them this book. it's a critical decision and there's not a book on the market that will help more with that big decision. the focus is on liberal arts colleges around the country that do great work turning above average students into excellent, independent learners, citizens, contributors. if you are looking for a "name" college, something your identity can attach itself too, then this book may be a disappointment. but then again, it may change your life by having you think more carefully about what is really important about your development those 4-5 years after high school.

5 out of 5 stars Colleges That Change Lives: 40 Schools You Should Know About Even If You're Not a Straight-A Student.......2007-01-29

I am a High School Counselor and I have used this book several times. It is good to have a book that is not for the Straight-A Student

5 out of 5 stars Transformational College Experiences.......2006-09-04

Loren's book is a fantastic review of what lies beyond the Ivy League. As a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School, I utilized my education to author The Interview Survival Kit and I have nothing but praise for what my undergrad and graduate experiences provided me. However, college applicants should know that finding the right college is about much more than finding the right "name" - many schools will provide students with powerful, transformational experiences that encourage personal, academic and professional growth. A fantastic book.

      Book Description

Universities can teach and demonstrate environmental principles and stewardship by taking action to understand and reduce the environmental impacts of their own activities. Greening the Ivory Tower, a motivational and how-to guide for staff, faculty, and students, offers detailed "greening" strategies for those who may have little experience with institutional change or with the latest environmentally friendly technologies.

The author was project manager of Tufts CLEAN!, a program whose mission was to reduce Tufts University's environmental impact. After analyzing the campus's overall environmental impact (each year the main campus serves 5 million meals; makes 14 million photocopies; uses 65 tons of paper towels, 110 million gallons of water, and 23 million kWh of electricity; and generates over 2,000 tons of solid waste), the team decided to focus on food waste, transportation, energy efficiency, and procurement practices. An essential discovery was that to change practices requires the personal commitment and direct involvement of those who have the responsibility for operating the institution on a daily basis. Although the Tufts experience forms the basis for many of the proposals in the book, the story goes well beyond Tufts; the author includes examples of successful practices from many other institutions.

        Book Description

Since the publication of the first edition of Human Behavior in the Social Environment, several generations of students have successfully used this classic text, which takes a social systems approach to human behavior. Completely revised and updated, this fifth edition shows a full sensitivity to the diverse constituencies of the human services. It reflects awareness of the role of varied cultural and ethnic features within the social environment it explores, and of the importance of the lengthened life cycle. It responds to our understanding of human behavior and to the needs of students and instructors as these have developed since the publication of the previous edition. For the first time, an ancillary diskette to assist in teaching the systems approach is available on request for instructors who have adopted this new edition.

Understanding new institutions, like building them, takes sensitivity, wisdom and patience. Sir Nicholas Bayne has those assets in abundance, and in this new history of the annual Western economic summits he deploys them with great skill. No other observer can match Bayne's combination of extensive personal knowledge and sophisticated interpretive skill. This book surveys the first quarter century of summitry against the wider backdrop of globalization and institutional change. A must-have for anyone interested in contemporary global political economy.

4 out of 5 stars A good intro to the environment-property rights debate.......1998-06-30

A refreshing and layperson's approach to the ever more complex debate on protecting the environment with property rights and entitlements. This is a solid rhetorical contribution that clarifies arguments for lawyers, economists, anthropologists, scholars and activists alike. It is multicultural and comprehensive enough for readers in the First and in the Third World.
