A must for those starting racing and for a stationary training guide.......2007-01-10
I am new to competitive cycling and have recently started cycling at Veteran level.
I am a family doctor and an avid reader of cycling books and I feel this is one of the best.
The sections of the book do not flow that well and give the impression that the book is probably cobbled together from a selection of the author's other writings: Getting started, training, Stationary training, Racing, Cycling in your head. Don't let that put you off however, this is a good read packed with factual non-faddish and very practical advice in a easily read format.
A lot of room in this book is given for use of a stationary trainer, which may not be for everyone, but if this is what you seek, it's the best stationary trainer resource I've yet found. Worth buying for this section alone. Racing tactics and approach, especially 'cycling in your head' are all very helpful and put together concepts and ideas that aren't found anywhere else. I read this first 18 months ago, and have read plenty since, but I find I remember the sayings of this author more frequently in my training and racing, more so than any other book i've read. The author is prolific in cycling literature but has more recently been releasing ebooks which are available through his website - to my mind less accessible than a 'real' book that you can get from a library or buy and pass on. No doubt he has some more outstanding works in pdf, but I havenn't ventured there. This book is a great resource, I keep going back to it and find it more helpful as I gain more racing experience, for these reasons, 5 stars from me.
A cycling coach.......2006-09-09
This is a great book, covers all the needs a cyclist is going to run into as he/she moves to proficiency. There are many of the training drills and ways to improve speed that are discussed and promoted. The adjustment of the bike is always a little formidable but Baker gives enough information where someone with a little mechanical ability can take care of a lot of his own needs.
Nice job Arnie Baker.
After reading Bicycling Medicine by the same author, I can't help but be disappointed and a bit confused........2006-08-11
P.S. After thinking about this book some more following the review, I realize that its big problem is that it's unfortunately titled. This is not a book about "smart" cycling.
I've met plenty of chronically novice riders who had quite a lot to teach me about smart cycling, and none of that information is contained here. This book, I'd argue, should be retitled to save it from the flamingly bad reviews, and here I suggest "Performance Cycling," because that's what the book is actually about--maximizing your performance, energy output, results, etc . . . .
This is not a book for the non-competitor.
----------------------------------------------
No. 1 thing I want to say: Arnie Baker's other book, Bicycling Medicine, is a great book that anyone who rides--even novice, fair weather, just-for-fun riders--should have; Bicycling Medicine is essential for anyone who ever felt uncomfortable or suffered some kind of pain as a result of riding; Smart Cycling however is no such must-read. That's why I'm so increadibly disappointed, and a bit glad that I didn't read this book before the other since I would have dropped the author altogether.
Arnie-baby, what the hell happened? This is atrocious. This is the pasta weighing, single digit gram fretting, Armstrong-wannabe, weenie cycling guide of the age. I thought we were friends, that you were for the common cyclist out to do a century or three a year. Oh well, at least you have that other book to fall back on.
This book gives the impression that cycling is a highly technical sport which requires all sorts of gizmos and careful monitoring of your performance level.
Fooey!
If you're not a competitive cyclist, determined to win races, you don't need to be doing the kind of self-analysis and monitoring of performance you read about in this book. And that's coming from someone who rides thousands of miles a year, non-racing.
Bottom Line: Follow this book's advice and you'll be completely disenchanted with cycling in no time, which is horribly odd since Arnie Baker MD, champion cyclist and all around good joe also wrote what I consider the essential cycling book of all time--Bicycling Medicine!

i am a 62 year old living in southern spain where we cycle most of the year . this books contents are exellent ,the information given is well writen and to the point especially re heart monitor training ,i thouroughly reccomend this book for all age groups and abilities KEN BILLING S. Spain.
not too hot, not too cold, just about right - .......2004-12-22
this is quite a nice little book on training, more than worth buying just for the very nice sequence of 1 hour trainer workouts - nicely hits the middle ground between the over the top, training bible type books, which offer plans to center your otherwise pointless life around bike training, and the mass-mkt, "this is how you sit on your bike, now go do some intervals" type of schlock.
be warned that the workouts are challenging, if you're mostly a recreational cyclist like myself; usually took me 2~3 weeks to get through one of his hours honestly, with lots of opportunity to explore the red line - probably works best in conjunction with less intense, longer workouts.
in addition to the 12 wk sequence, there are additional fun hours available to focus on particular aspects of cycling, which can also provide opportunity to explore one's limits.

Questions and Answers to Help You Pass the Real Estate Appraisal Exams.......2005-07-19
Excellent review for taking the Real Estate Appraisal Exam, it covers all topics at the proper degree of difficulty.
I TOO USED MR. TIRONE'S HP-12C BOOK TO STUDY FOR THE EXAM.......2004-03-25
I purchased as much material as I could to help me through the appraisal certification exams, especially so to help me through the books I had to buy! It semed that I kept getting deeper and deeper with each book I purchased, the reviewed book included. I then saw one of my classmate's book on the HP12C, written by a Mr. John A. Tirone from Michigan. I purchased this book and used it to supplement the calculations in Mr. Fisher's questions and answers book as well as his Income Property Appraisal book.
The Tirone HP12C book was clear, comprehensive, and as said by others who have commented on Mr. Tirone's books, I was able to call him with questions on how to solve various income capitalization problems and also on how to fine tune my understanding of the Hewlett packard HP12C financial calculator. To my thinking, every appraisal text I have seen is deficient in assisting us students with the calculations on the HP finance calculators. Mr. Tirone's book and his giving no-charge approach to supporting his books and the topic are essentially lifesavers for most of us.

I used Professional real Estate Propblem Solving using the HP 12C to get me through this confusing book as well as help me get through "G1" and "G2" appraisal's computations materials. What stumped me was the lack of clarity in the Fihser Tosh book as far as computations. for coverage of the HP12C it was a lifesaver to have Mr. Tirone's HP-12C real estate book. Mr. Tirone was helpful as several in our class called him for help while trying to absorb the confusing aspects of the Fisher/Tosh book. Mr. Tirone should write a book like Questions and Answers... or team up with the likes of the authors of the reviewed book.
One example in the Tosh book shows a calculation using a terminal value-sales price of $10,000 when it should be $100,000. This gave us fits and I could not figure the problem out until I called Mr. Tirone and he showed us how to do the problem.
Didn't feel like it helped much but I did pass.......2002-03-31
I was nervous before this test and I went through and answered every question in the book. The actual test seemed to ask significantly different questions. The result, however, was I passed with over 90 percent. Can you argue with that? It must have helped.
Don't waste your money if you already have the yellow book.......2001-08-26
If you already have the yellow book "Questions and Answers to help you past the Real Estate Appraisal Exams", don't waste your money purchasing the new book that was put out in 2000. It's the same book - just copy written in October of 2000. I made the mistake of thinking that there would be new questions since 1994, or the questions would at least be asked in a different format, but they are not. Word for word they are the same. So save your money if you already have the yellow book and just study it a little bit harder!

Luna Bay, Pire Pressure review By, Shenae.......2007-05-26
In the beginning of Pier Pressure, there are five best friends, Luna, Kanani, Cricket, Rae, and Isobel that live in Cresent Cove. Luna's parents run a surfing camp and Luna and her friends help them. The first day of the surfing camp Luna sees a guy and they indroduce themselves.
Next, Luna and the guy named David sort of become friends. However, David sort of has an attitude and couldn't surf at all, but was in the intermediant class.
Finally, David let Luna teach him how to surf. Thats not all Luna was thinking about. She remembered that The Western Championship surf competition was coming up and her mom is a pro surfer. Luna thought that she had to live up to her moms reputation. Now only with three weeks left until the surf competitionand until David has to go back to his dads, she has to try to train and stay away from David for awhile. Which of course Luna doesn't want to do. Finally, she starts training while also making a little time for David. It finally comes to the competition and she surfs with her heart and ends up, well you'll have to read the rest to find out if Luna and David ever become serious or say good bye and sort of stay in touch.
Luna Bay.......2005-10-28
Genre: Fiction
Three sentence summary: Luna is a camp councelor at a surf camp. While there she meets a boy. They begin dating but many things go wrong.
What I liked most about the book: What I liked most about the book was how it has real life problems that you, the reader can relate to.
What I didn't like and why: I didn't like how it skipped around from person to person. It confused me.
My favorite character and why: My favorite character is Luna because she is so down to earth and knows wrong from right.
The scene, line, or passage that meant something to me and why: David and her are in the ocean playing when he grabs her hand. It's just so sweet and really grabs your attention and makes you wanting to keep reading to see where it leads.
What I would say about this book to someone else: I would say if you like romantic and adventurous books then read this because it's all about two surfers who fall in love.
One question I have after reading this book: One question I have is how old was David. They never said in the book but he semmed younger than Luna.
My strongest reason for recommending this book: I recommend this book because it catches your attention and really puts a good meaning on life.
If you like surfing you will like to read this book.......2004-11-08
The main chacters in Luna Bay are Luna, Rae, Kanani, Cricket, and Isobel. The setting is at North Beach in Crescent Cove. Luna's parents have a surf camp. Luna saw a boy at the surf camp that she thought looked good. But the boy really doesn't like surfing. His grandparents sent him there so he would not be board while he was at their house. The conflict is that David does not like surfing and Luna does. The lesson to be learned is that you don't have to like the samething as someone else to be there friend. The ending was really. I would not change the ending at all. I would recommend this book to pre-teen girls. I would recommend it to all my friends. I really enjoyed the book. I encourage all girls to read this book. The best part of the book was its ending. The first two chapters were really good too. I hope that all the people that read this book will enjoy it; the title of the book is LUNA BAY.
Surf City!!.......2004-03-12
I read the book ýLuna Bay.ý I thought it was a outstanding book. I would recommend this book to people who surf, and that live in California. I would recommend this book to people that surf and live in California because itýs all about surfing and a little bit of horse riding. It would be a fun book for surfer girls to read.
I really liked it because I like surfing even though, I donýt surf. I watch surfing competitions on television and it looks like fun. Iýve always wanted to know how to surf and I think that I would be good at it because, I snowboard and there both almost alike. I also like it because it takes place by the ocean, and I love the ocean. When I think about the ocean it makes me feel cheerful and cool.
ýLuna Bayý is about five best friends, Rae, Luna, Cricket, Kanani, and Isobel. They all love surfing together. They are all counselors of Lunaýs parents, Tuck and Cateýs, surfing camp. At surf camp Luna meets a kid David she falls in love with, and they start dating, but her parents donýt want her hanging out with him because it will interfere with her training for the contest, but Luna still hangs out with him. At night when she goes out to train she doesnýt, she goes to meet David, and teaches him how to surf. On the nights she does go training she lifts weights and jogs. David doesnýt know how to surf because he lives in Florida and his dad sends him to see his grandparents for a month, and his dad signs him up to learn how to surf. Luna is so happy because she just found out that she qualified for the ASA ( Amateur Surfing Association Western Championship) at Cresent Cove right down the street from her. Her mom was the three-time champion in th world, and she wants Luna to win. Luna is very pressured about winning, so she can make her mom proud of her daughter. If Luna wins the contest the SG Magazine will have her in the magazine, but she doesnýt think sheýll win because some of the best surfers are coming to town to be in the contest.
Overall, I think this book was really good. Read the book and find out if Luna wins or if she loses the championship.
SWEET!!.......2003-10-15
I am probably waaaaaaaaaaaay too old to even pick up this book, but since my adage is "you're never too old to read" I picked it up anyway. And even though the writing is a bit slow (but then again I'm not exactly the target-group of this book) it's pretty interesting and, parents, it is safe. No full frontal snogging here...
The parts where the author describes the surfing itself are on the other hand so interesting that I would really like to go out there and start surfing myself!!!
I can also fully underscribe the sideline-message: treat your planet with respect!
So all in all: I'd say 4 stars!! (that and I'll probably buy the next Luna bay novels)

Foot Reflexology and Murder.......2005-09-23
Keely Moreno, now free from an abusive ex-husband, is living in Key West and building up her foot reflexology business. Things seem to be going fairly well until she arrives for an appointment at her wealthy patient Margaux Ashford's house to find her dead of a gunshot.
The police are very interested in Keely because she found the victim. They question her quite often, but there are plenty of suspects to go around.
She and her friends decide to try to solve the murder, because they aren't convinced the police will look at all the possible suspects. Other things begin to happen, including a fire and another death. Each of these events is in some way related to Keely. This doesn't help direct the police to other suspects.
Keely finds herself in some sticky situations. Can she and her friends find the murderer without her becoming the next victim?
This is the first book by this author that I have read. It definitely won't be the last. I really enjoyed Keely, and the Key West location was very refreshing. I felt like I was on vacation while reading this book.
Keely and her friends and family are such fun characters. You never know what might happen next. I can't wait to read another book in this series. I highly recommend this book.
Extremely Suspenseful! WOW!!!.......2005-02-28
This book was good on so many different levels. First of all, I loved the flavor of Key West that runs all through it. Many times I felt as though I were there--even though I have never seen the Keys for myself. Knowing that the author spends several months a year there, tells me that most of these places actually exist. Secondly, the characters were so vivid. I loved Keely, Punt, Jass, Gram, and Beau, and I'd love to read a sequel to find out more about them. I found myself deeply involved in their adventures, and I was often rooting and frightened for them. Last, a great deal of suspense ran throughout the novel. It might have been the pervasive, malevolent presence of Jude; the fire; the body; or perhaps the suspicions of the police. All of these things kept me reading frantically. I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys a well-written, compelling novel.
Back To Key West: "Pier Pressure".......2005-02-05
In this latest novel from author Dorothy Francis, readers are returned to Key West to consider a different heroine and supporting cast than in "Conch Shell Murder." This time it is Keely Moreno, foot reflexologist, who faces death, romance, and the daily stress of living in paradise. Despite the fact that her abusive ex husband lives on Kew West as well these days and could be ignoring the restraining order against him, Kelly has made a new life for herself and is doing rather well.
That is until on a visit to a patient's home for a scheduled appointment, she finds Margaux Ashford dead from a gunshot wound. While the list of suspects for killing the wealthy woman is long, no one else's gun was used to fire the fatal shot. That fact, as well as the fact that she found the body make Keely the number one suspect in the eyes of the police. Knowing how the local police operate and being not at all impressed, Keely, with a little pushing from her friends, decides to investigate the case herself by asking the suspects, many of whom are her patients, where they were at the estimated time of death. As everyone knows, asking questions can get one into trouble fast, which is exactly what happens for Kelly.
Written in the same style as her cozy, "Conch Shell Murder," Dorothy Francis shows her love of Key West. Lush descriptions of the area abound, as do the characters that populate her novel. Many of them are amusingly eccentric and one gets the feeling they are based on real people the author has known. The list of suspects is long and often entertaining as their various eccentricities are covered. At the same time, underneath it all is a tight mystery that provides a rich and enjoyable read for adults of any age.

A fantastic amateur sleuth tale .......2004-11-30
In Key West, Keely Moreno is the only foot reflexologist on the island; she takes patients in her office but for special clients she makes house calls. When Keely arrives at Margaux Ashford's house, she finds her client dead from a bullet, a gun in her hand. The police question Keely extensively but won't say if the rich civic minded woman was murdered or committed suicide. Keely is friendly with the children of Margaux's husband, Jess and Punt; the trio agrees to look for suspects.
The matter becomes urgent for the reflexologist because ballistics show Margaux was shot with Keely's gun and the alibi of Margaux's husband fails to check out. Keely believes her abusive ex-husband is the guilty party because she and her grandmother saw him following her despite a restraining order. When a fire burns down the house she is living in Keely thinks her former spouse has something to do with it because she spotted him in the crowd and he left evidence behind. Punt isn't at all certain he's the perpetrator and insists they keep investigating, a move that almost costs Keely her life.
PIER PRESSURE is a fantastic amateur sleuth tale with equal attention given to characterizations and the investigation. Keely is a vulnerable yet courageous woman trying to start life over after being beaten continuously by her ex-husband. Although he is stalking her, there is no direct evidence linking him to the murder so readers will wonder who the perpetrator really is and keep reading to find out. Dorothy Francis is a talented writer and this reviewer will be on the lookout for her next mystery.
