Mumbled solutions...........2007-04-26

The book presents a few scenarios (though not enough) for self rescue but ultimately the author produces such complicated and mumbled solutions that understanding the diagrams is work. Most of the solutions could be presented in a simpler way, with less backups, less fuss whitch is usually the way emergency situations require you to act. Also very common devices such as the croll, tibloc and other vertical devices are not at all mentioned. I think this could be better.

An excellent reference for multlipitch climbers.......2001-10-30

This book is for the experienced climber who understands the importance of self rescue skills for multipitch trad climbing.
It does not take the place of a professionally-led self-rescue course! If you try to learn the techniques on your own with this book you will be frustrated. This is the reference for after you take such a course.
While it is shows many scenarios, it can be confusing with so many variations. They should have concentrated on the principles so the climbers could think their way out of a specific situation using the basic scenarios.

I am an aspiring Big Wall climber. I would not be caught dead 2000 feet off the deck without the information contained in this book. Regardless of your goals as a climber, you owe it to yourself and your partner to learn and master the techniques contained in this book. BUY IT!

The book covers all aspects of rescue of a fallen climber, from freeing oneself from a harness to ascending or decending the rope to finally hooking up and hauling the victim to safety. I've read numerous books on climbing and if your looking for a book on self rescue, this is the one!

Awesome book.......1998-09-23

The American Alpine Institute recommended this book to me after I took their basic mountaineering course. I've read it several times now. It explains important topics like escaping from a belay, pulley systems, lowering methods, rappelling with an injuryed partner and self-belayed solo climbing. The illustrations are excellent.

When I do appearances, it is fun to take the group's name and make it into a humorous acronym. Tok Pisin Stret is an extended and open-ended list of words which have come into use in written Tok Pisin since the Pacific War of 1942-45. It is not a dictionary and has made no attempt to account for every word appearing in the current Tok Pisin writing. Nevertheless it has tried to take into account trends in expanding the vocabulary of Papua New Guinea Tok Pisin. This list contains virtually all the single words in the Mihalic-Jacaranda Dictionary. The exceptions are a couple of archaic words of limited use historically and a few items of local flora and fauna which were never identified precisely. The list also includes a selection of two-word concepts whichcould be conveniently listed under the entryfor the first word of each pair. Also newerloan words and a few established Tok Pisin words which missed inclusion in the Dictionary are included in the list. The English equivalents are provided and are primarily to help the newcomer to identify the Tok Pisin word and to indicate the range of its possible meanings.

In 1938 a 17 year old Tullis Yoder worries he will never ride a bull again after losing 2 fingers on his first bull ride. He also finds out his 13 horses (his only family) will be sold to make dog food. He travels by night with the help of a lady docter to steal all of his rodeo horses back. They are pursued by crooks, three sheriffs, a powerful judge, and a girl. It's a fast moving adventure for people who love adventure.

Really good book being the first i've read by Peck!!.......2004-05-18

This book was beautifully written from the sneaky plot and "stolen" girlfrind to the different points of view. Everything jumped out like I was really there.
The story begins with the orphan, Tullis Yoder, and the Big Bubb Rodeo show where he works as a stable hand. When the rodeo has to close down and Tullis realizes that the only family he's ever had (a.k.a. the 13 rodeo horses) are going to be slaughtered, he teams up with an old poker playing, card-cheating, horse-theif bum, who is temporarily in jail, and his accoplished daghter who's a doctor to save the 13 horses!!

Through Anna's book you will come to know many vibrant characters whose lives intersect across time, culture, and continents. You'll meet Ruthie, Maria, Sly, Faramez, Zsuzsa, Consuelo, and of course Annie. Ms. Balint brings the lives of Gypsies, Mexican-Americans, African-American Jews, Native Americans, and British together through stories that are inspiring, thought-provoking, funny, and full of pathos.

One story that stands out for me is Wonderbread and Spam. That title alone intrigued me. Ms. Balint is full of the kind of wit that sticks its tongue out at you and says, "See, I made you laugh, didn't I?". At the same time she takes you along as people deal with the struggles of their lives: a dying son, domestic abuse, old age, buying a car.

You will enjoy the read.
