Beautiful Birds every day of the year!.......2006-03-09
I truly appreciate learning about birds every day from looking at my Audobon 365 Birds Calendar. Thanks for the beauty and the learning!
Backyard Bird Calendar Rocks!.......2006-02-25
If you find yourself for a lack of avian indoor splendor, check-out this calendar. Every day has a bird or bird-related picture on it, plus a giant opposite-facing bird picture. It's stylishly formated & tastefully decorated. More than adequate block size allows for numerous tasks/appointments for each day. This calendar is finely sized and made from quality materials. Being Audubon, the picture quality of our feathered friends is excellent in many aspects. I highly recommend it. It'll add lift to your year!
Great calendar for bird lovers.......2006-02-01
I've seen a lot of bird calendars and this is by far my favorite. What better than a bird a day for every day of the year?!? Great photos! I love it!

Book Description
Physically demanding sports such as tennis and basketball have a lot in common with skills such as playing the piano. In addition to physical training, mastering these activities requires developing mental and emotional talents as well. Drawing on his own experiences, Dan Millman, in this revised and updated edition of The Inner Athlete, offers a regimen to integrate physical training with psychological growth. He examines the motivations for athletic excellence and offers a transformative guide to success that is as applicable in everyday life as it is in sports.
Customer Reviews:
A magnificent book.......2006-11-13
Dan Millman does a master job of explaining a lot of very important techniques needed in developing skills (in sport). I just wish I could have read this book many years ago... It is well explained, funny at times, enjoyable, well structured and with plenty of examples from many sports so everyone (almost) can related to situations similar to the ones described.
This is a must have book for any sportsman(woman)
A balanced approach.......2006-09-12
Dan Millman is definetly one of my favorite authors and speakers. Ever since I read his book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, almost 15 years ago, I have gravitated towards his work. I even translated one of his books, The Laws of Spirit, from English to Icelandic a few years back. My review might therefore be tainted with my admiration : )
Body Mind Mastery is a great book for athletes and Millmans approach is balanced and invigorating. He challenges the athletes training routines and mindset with a perfect blend of information and practical guidlines.
Many coaches in Iceland have used this book with good outcomes as a result of my recommending it to them.
It has even come in handy for people I know that are not professional athletes. The philosophy expounded on can be used in varied situations in life.
Good Starting Book.......2004-02-05
This is a very solid book to read in your quest of mastery. Not quite the total package. I think the book on Mastery by George Leonard covers the whole realm of mastery a little better. This book does make a couple of great points, like when your practicing a skill to over compensate by doing the complete oppsoite. If your shooting a basketball & keep missing to the right then practice missing a couple to left so you can find balance & make the shot down the middle. This also teaches you mentally to that you can control balance by being unbalanced, which will make help you see being balanced more clearly. A little weird but works. But this is only one of many good points I think Millman gives. Its a great start for mastery & is highly recommend
Solid Effort But Nothing New.......2001-08-28
The book has 166 pages of content and can be divided into three main parts. The first part is fairly abstract, Millman calls it "Understanding the Larger Game". The first chapter is about natural laws that Millman sees as being helpful to understand; the next has to do with bringing awareness to our activities as a way to see what we are doing wrong, what we are doing right, and then learning from our mistakes; last chapter of part 1 is about preparation, about slow and steady progress. Personally, having read alot of self help and mind body I didn't really find this first part very helpful. The second part and the first chapter of the third part are, to me, the meat and bones of the book, where the concrete content is. He has chapters on Mental, Emotional, and Physical talent and how to cultivate all three. He talks about the self concept, fear of failure, about breathing, and then about strength, suppleness, stamina, and sensitivity. Then there is a chapter with specific advice for working on skills, like hitting a golf ball or diving or gymnastics. The third part of the book criticizes the focus on results and urges more focus on focus, concentration and personal growth and the last chapter is about new sports, less competitive, that Millman sees developing in the future. Again, this part is more abstract and it is very normative, criticizing competition, though he does recognize that it can bring out the best in people, and then naming some new sports he sees as good developments. He also suggests requiring athletes in asymettrical sports such as golf, tennis, bowling and baseball to "use both arms equally" (pg 143). I found that a little annoying and I also didn't really see it as having a place in this book. Overall, there are a bunch of good points in here, it is clear that Millman understands how to pursue excellence and growth, but I felt the book was a bit unfocused and there was nothing really new for someone who has done some reading in this area. Greg ...
Millman's work transforms "training".......1999-06-26
"Millman's work combines the best of the human potential movement with the practical tools needed to reach that goal. It features sections on the "Peaceful Warrior Warm-Up", the aging athlete, and instructions for creating a daily exercise routine. This work is as much about mastering life as it is about the game itself." - NAPRA REVIEW

Good resource for traveling!.......2007-07-14
I like the simplicity of the book. It is arranged in sections according to use and then also arranged alphabetically within the glossary. The only down fall for the book is that it does not have a glossary alphabetized in Japanese with the English word or phrase following it.
Easiest to use in practical settings.......2007-05-06
Hey,
I've had to travel to Japan a couple times for work and have both this and the Lonely Planet phrasebook. While the Lonely Planet version has more stuff on how to speak in japanese I found it extremely difficult to use when I was on the street, in a store, or at my hotel trying to communicate. The berlitz is sectioned out pretty well and one thing I really appreciated which the lonely planet didn't is how to ask for a drink on the rocks. I still keep the Lonely Planet one with me when I travel over there but leave it at the hotel. When I go out and wonder around the country I'm never without my Berlitz guide. It has a little less content but I find the content is both more useful and a lot easier to get through when trying to talk with the locals.
Outstanding for the novice on a short trip.......2002-07-28
This book was exactly what I needed to navigate japan beyond Tokyo. I was on business for 6 days in NE Japan, and was able to frequently use this book to help me get around. English may be common in Tokyo, but outside it is much less so.
Indispensible aid to communicating in Japanese.......2002-01-13
This phrasebook was used as a "textbook" by a Japanese student who tutored me in Japanese before a recent trip to Japan. It contained many helpful phrases for a lot of situations you will encounter when traveling in Japan. I consider this critical for "survival Japanese"--contrary to what you may have heard, everyone does NOT speak English. I used this book in talking to cab drivers, making a train reservation, ordering food, asking directions, making purchases. I gave this four stars instead of five because this lacks some elements you need to be understood. The biggest one is knowing how the Japanese accent words. Also missing was the discussion of the differences in using different numbers for different objects. I was able to "fill in the gaps" from my tutor and the Pimsleur Japanese tapes. All in all, a great reference book for travelers.
Simply the best tool out there.......2000-09-15
I have been living in Japan for over two years now and this thing is still in my back pocket (albeit a bit ratty now).
I have invested tons in pocket dictionaries and phrasebooks. I don't even bother to carry anything else with me now.
Even though my Japanese can get me through a conversation, I still have trouble, and that's where this book comes in.
Excellent organization, and the fact that it's written in both romanized characters, so you can read it, and Japanese characters, so they can read it, is a Godsend.
I have copied pages from it for my Japanese students who were taking a trip to the states.
I could go on and on, but this little book has been a life saver. Easily the best 10 bucks I've ever spent.
Extremely useful if you have no Japanese, and still quite handy even if you do. Even has a section on hitting on people!

Customer Reviews:
a good reference for beginners.......2007-03-09
This is a good book for beginners with clear explanation of Grammar and Phrases Especially for Westerners.
This book is written entirely in Romanji, therefore, any "serious Japanese learners" or people plan to work or live in Japan will need other texts with Hiragana , Katakana and Hanji characters to improve their proficiency.
I am of Chinese heritage and have learned Japanese for about 1 year hence this book will come into handy as a qucik reference.
Overall very good introduction to the language.......2005-01-08
I've just finished to go through the book. As an "advanced" beginner in Japanese, I had been trying to find a book that explains clearly the most important points of the grammar that are useful in everyday conversation, and "Essential Japanese" does a very good job of it.
It is divided into twenty units: most of them have a dialog, grammar explanations, an exhaustive vocabulary list and exercises, with a few of them used as revision units. The lessons are quite different from what I've been used to so far, in the sense that they are really focusing on what a beginner would need in real life, both in terms of grammar and vocabulary. The grammar is also explained in a very understandable way, even for people who have no previous knowledge of Japanese, or for those who are not familiar with learning foreign languages, something that is FAR from being the case in most of the other Japanese study guides out there.
Also, and maybe most importantly, it is very well conceived, so you actually get to LEARN the language, and you remember the various structures and the vocabulary presented in there fairly easily. However, it is not a "learn to speak Japanese in 5 hours" kind of book; it requires of you that you actually spend some time on it, but it is much more efficient in my opinion, and the results are quickly there, encouraging you to keep working on it.
All this praise but "only" 4 stars? Well, there's a couple of points that I personally did dislike:
-the book is written entirely in romanji; I understand why they would choose to do so, as it allows to focus on grammar and vocabulary, but since I've been used to work with kana and kanji, it did bother me some. Moreover, you have to know that in Japan, except in such things as advertisement and some magazines' covers, nothing is written in romanji. If you know you're gonna need to read some Japanese too, I suggest you buy at least one of those books out there to learn the kana on top of this one, and a list of essential kanji.
-I didn't find the revision units very useful. Except for a few more exercises, they only repeat the dialogs of the previews lessons word for word. Barely useful in my opinion.
But that shouldn't stop you from buying this book if you're a beginner, or even if you have already some knowledge. This book is, except for the romanji problem, one of the best of its genre I've ever come across, and for a very reasonable price too!
very slow delivery!!!.......2001-08-17
okay, i didn't get this book yet, but i was told, by amazon.com that i will get it on the 15th. later, they emailed me saying that i will get it sometime between 20th-24th! today i checked it again, and it said that i'm supposed to get it on the 21-27th! geez i wanted to learn japanese over the summer, not like, when school starts! bad service!
Perfect for learning to speak Japanese!.......2001-08-10
A few months ago, I decided I wanted to learn how to speak Japanese. I'm also 14. After reading this book lightly, off and on for the past month or two, I can speak Japanese. Nothing fancy, but I understand some of my Animes, I can watch the Fujisankei news and understand it some, and I can speak to the sushi chefs on my weekly sushi dinner. This book will teach you to speak it, period. It's lessons are simple, clear, and apply to real life situations. Great job Berlitz!
A structured approach.......2000-07-24
I have been studying Japanese on my own in the U. S. for closeto a year. I have no particular talent for languages, and my progresshas been slow. I have used some Transparent Language software... a phrase book, and a book on hiragana. However, the most important part of my self-designed curriculum is Stugnell's Essential Japanese. It is a fairly traditional text, providing a highly structured treatment of pronunciation, grammar, and idiomatic expressions. It takes one element at a time, provides examples and explanation, and then practice exercises. I am only about half way through the book, but I think I'll make it to the end and will then be able to get a good deal more out of the software programs, which really just offer practice, not instruction. As language textbooks go, this is about as good as I've seen. Buy this book and ganbatte!

Book Description
TEENAGERS JIM AND JULIA don't know they are in for the summer adventure of a lifetime as they travel to Turks and Caicos to help Julia's father survey the endangered coral reefs. Their explorations lead them to North Caico Island where they discover and befriend Marcel, a young Haitian refugee who is all alone. While the friends are fishing off the island's reef one day, a fierce storm blows in and takes Jim and Marcel on a three-day life-threatening treacherous voyage out to sea. As their food and water run out, the teenagers spot a barren island--Hogsty Reef--with a grounded tanker rusting off shore, where they seek shelter. While searching for food, Jim and Marcel discover that Hogsty Reef is actually not abandoned, but the hideaway for drug dealers and their illegal drug money. While Julia works tirelessly to rescue Jim and Marcel, the boys must find a way to escape without notice from the drug runners, and survive the many dangers of Hogsty Reef.
