Lightweight.......2007-08-28
Unfortunately, I think I lot of other reviewers are smitten with the Gracie legacy and not judging the book on its own merits. If it were written by John Q. Nobody, they'd probably be more inclined to give a dispassionate and fair review. As a martial artist with 10+ years experience, I was looking for a training program that would help me prepare for competing.
Pros:
The Gracie Stretch routine is a nice set of stretches to do on a daily basis. It has a lot of stretches specific to hip flexibility which is important for fighters. Though a lot of the same information and positions can be found with much greater details in the book, "The Martial Artist's Book of Yoga". Whether the GSR alone is the price of the book depends on you.
There is some nice information on plyometrics, isometrics, tapering which are some modern concepts that would be of interest to someone looking to take their workouts to the advanced level. Though by no means is the detail on these topics extensive.
Cons:
The 'meat' of this book could be condensed to a pamphlet. (In fact, I photocopied the GSR and shrunk it down to fit on a single page so I could use it in the gym without looking like a newbie.) Most of the book is dominated by oversized glossy photos of Royce performing the various stretches and exercises, which for most intermediate and advanced athletes could be sufficiently listed by title alone. The ratio of pages devoted to photos to text is easily 12:1. The few pages devoted to the "Gracie diet" are laughable (12 oranges for breakfast?) and not nearly sufficient to tailor to your body type and specific nutritional needs.
Most lacking is any talk of actual fight training. Bag work, pad work, and sparring are never mentioned. Not even once. Where do these all fit in to the Superfit program?
Summary:
My opinion is that this book suffers the same watering down effect of many books that attempt to appeal to too broad an audience. By broad I don't mean beginners and advanced fighters, but non-fighters as well. Replace all the photos of Royce with those of any other recognizable athlete and it would be the same book. Even then it is only a cursory overview of a professional athlete's training regimen. I suspect that Royce, still competing, isn't going to give away all his secrets just yet. Maybe he'll release a better edition after he retires.
OUTSTANDING BOOK!!!.......2007-08-12
This wasn't just a great book for me but I let other people who aren't fighters look at it and they thought it was great as well. Not only does it provide you with some great workout routines but it also develops a concious mind about different types of excercise effects and drawbacks as well as nutritional aspects to really peak your physical fitness.
Must Buy if your a fighter.......2006-05-13
The exercise with the weights is nothing special because it's stuff you would know already if you were ever in a gym, but the other stuff, like the conditioning and everything is great. The ab routines are killer, and if you are a fighter some of the ab routines are done like jiu jitsu moves, so they are great for you. The stretching routine can't be beat, it is very good. The Gracies have a certain way to doing their own thing. When it comes to their nutrition, they eat a lot of fruit and only 3 times a day, sometimes only twice a day. If you wanna follow that you can, but after finishing a hard workout you really should eat more than 3 meals a day. Very good conditioning book, I suggest it, to anyone trying to get in shape, and any fighter who is looking for other things to add to their conditioning.
Good look at Royce's PERSONAL training program, but maybe not ideal for you!.......2005-11-09
Don't take 3 stars the wrong way. 3 stars is good but not great. People reviewing here tend to give 5 stars to anything they personally like.
This book is Royce's personal training programs.
Its split into sections:
Stretching, abs, cardio, weights, plyometric, power, programs, diet
The stretching routine is Gracie's personal routine and is a 1 person full body routine, paying special attention to the hips, quads, and hamstrings (this is good, most guys tend to be tight in the hips, and what martial artist doesn't want to work toward the full splits!). It also has a section showing some good 2 person stretches.
The abs routine is the ONLY jiu-jitsu/grappling specific area of the book. Many of the ab exercises are done from various guard position (feet wrapped around someones waist, or feet under the inside of the thighs). These include twisting motions and full situps while hanging off someone standing up.
Good stuff.
The cardio section is short and doesn't feature many alternate ways to do your cardio workouts.
The weights routines are nothing special or unique, just a large list of the standard body building/strength training exercises you see 99% of people doing at every gym (not that this is bad, just don't expect secret sports specific exercises)
The plyometric and power (ie explosiveness) is an interesting read, but much of it is done with a trainer holding the attached bungee cords, providing resistance. A solo option is given - wear a weight vest - but I like most people don't have a trainer with cords, or a weight vest....
Other exercises like box jumps are good, if you have really high platforms to jump onto...
Still, this is Royce's PERSONAL exercise program so you are seeing what the champ himself does.
Included are exercise plans for beginner, intermediate and advanced as well as information about the Gracie family diet and information on what Royce himself does.
Its a good exercise book and is interesting to see how Royce trains. I was suprised it had so little sports specific (grappling) exercises because it is possible to combine the two.
You can see some of this in Choke (the documentary on older brother Rickson) and in Scott Sonnon's Grapplers Toolbox, Body Flow, and Prasara DVDs.
Personally the main thing I'll take from this is the 1 man stretching routine which is quite good and I'll have to disagree with another reviewer who said the routine is good but not worth the price of the book alone. I think it is!

I've learned so many new stretches and workouts from this book. I also love the fact that it lays out a daily workout and meals. These guys really know what they are talking about!

I tried many other books, but this one helped or is helping me the best. Each chapter has good easy to follow, step by step learning, and then examples and tests, and you can correct it yourself the answers are in the back. I am really please and it is helping me alot along with another program I have.

this is a great book for those wanting to learn / practice / study german. It starts from VERY basic to quite advanced German Grammar and Vocabulary. This is great for studying, especially when faced with big tests like the AATG test and other German Exams. great on any level, very descriptive and useful. A definite must-have!

You won't be fluent after working through this book, but it is a good supplement to a college course, or a vocab book. I found the exercises and explanations to be very clear and concise. Worth the 15$.

Excellent book! If you're a beginner learning German grammar, such as declension and word order, this is an excellent resource. The material is presented in a logical and easy to use format, that makes understanding and learning very easy.

This book does exactly what its intended for: it provides an excellent outline of German Grammer. Included are concise explanations of German grammar followed by a slew of exercises with answers in the back of the book! This is a great companion book to any German course. Highly recommended!

I have studied German for almost six months, and I can tell you that this little book allows me to comprehend the material that I am learning in class much more quickly. This book is perfect for beginners because a more complex grammar guide can confuse the first time learner. As I advance in my studies, I plan to upgrade to the complete editions.

This book is a must have for anyone learning german. It explains the language better than any other book on the subject I own. It has lots practice exercises as well as tons examples. Every aspect of german grammar is taught. It even teaches large ammounts of vocabulary in the process. If you need help with grammar I can't think of a better tool.

A very moving book. It marks out in detail the words of Israeli and Palestinian youth as they confronted each other, offering enormous hope to the idea that yes, these people can live together. A remarkable book about a remarkable program.
A waste of your hard earned money.......2001-09-13
This book is the worst book I ever read. I can't understand why someone would publish this. He presents ideas that are radical to say the least. And it's seems like he is living in his imgination. He doesn't know anything about the middle east, I mean he his romantsizing terrorists as though they were freedom fighters (like car boomings is a good thing!?!). Thats probbly why only people from is orgnizition are recommanding you to buy this terrible book. My 3 year old dughter can probbly write better then him (John Wallach is the main autor if you can even call him an autor).

The escalating rhetoric of Palestinians and Israeli, the escalating fighting is all the more absurd if one has enjoyed the experience of two groups meeting not in enmity but friendship, as in the covers of this great book. Since one will never win, the only way to peace, real and just peace, is a meeting of minds, young or old, or in-between. This is the only way. How long will it take? What is so obvious, as seen here, is strangely, so hard to achieve. This book best exemplifies the way barriers are broken down when face to face meetings occur.

I participated in the Seeds of Peace camp this past summer. Even though the book used examples from more early years, I could relate my experiences to the amazing process described in the book, the unmasking of the enemy, and the establishment of friendships amongst foresworn enemys. But this book wouldn't appeal only to those who have gone through the program, it will show those who aren't fimiliar with it, and even those who do not know much about the middle east, the work being done to resolve this conflict, and the emphasis that even though the participants are young in age, they can and will shape the society, and the future of the middle-east to a better place for all religions and nationalities.

I only read parts of the paperback covered book, and i tell you, as an active member of SOP here in Israel, that this book is the best of expression to our feelings here in the middle east, and our hopes and fears of and for the future. i recomend this book to anyone who is interested in making the world a better place. thank you, E.

The Enemy Has a Face.......2007-02-08
Gloria Miklowitz tackles the prickly subject of the Arab-Israeli conflict in this new novel for young adults. She sets her story in Los Angeles where 14 year old Netta Hofman wakes up one morning to find that her older brother, Adam, did not come home the night before. Three months earlier, the family had moved from Israel to LA and they are baffled by Adam's disappearance. They assume it may have something to do with Palestinian terrorism since Netta's father's work is related to the defense industry. During the course of the investigation into Adam's disappearance, Netta reluctantly befriends a Palestinian boy in her school, learns about the murky cyber-world of Palestinian chat rooms, and finds out information about her brother that surprises her. This short novel retains its suspense until the final pages, when we finally find out what happened to Adam.
The author of this book is clearly trying her best to balance both sides of the Middle East conflict. However, using a 14-year-old girl's view to explore the issue of Palestinian-Israeli relationships is only partially successful. Both sides are represented to the reader, but Miklowitz wisely keeps politics from overwhelming the storyline. The book works better as a young adult mystery.
A few highly unlikely scenarios in this book do detract from the storyline, however. From discovering Adam's computer password on the third guess to making her way around the city on public transportation, things come a bit too easily to the young Netta. One must also conclude that her spoken and written English is perfect, even though her family arrived in Los Angeles only three months earlier. Also, it is unlikely that this clever young teen would chose to keep some of her discoveries about her brother a secret from her parents during such tragic circumstances.
However, if these flaws can be set aside, the novel does attempt to show how young people in a political conflict can often be much better than adults at examining their prejudices. The growing and tenuous relationship between Netta and Laith, the Palestinian boy, is plausible and realistic. Miklowitz has captured the flavor of the middle school world well. The characters here are appealing and could even merit a longer book so their true depth could be discovered. The subject matter, however, is suspenseful and ultimately sad, so this book is recommended for 5th grade and up.

This book was a good book. I wish it was a tiny bit better. I think it was a tiny bit weird and the story is confusing. It is sad in the end.

A Gripping Story for Adults and Children.......2003-05-16
This gripping story is the account of the Hofman family recently moved from Israel to Los Angeles. Their seventeen year old son Adam was in high school and fourteen year old daughter Netta in middle school. Adam quickly found friends and began enjoying the new school while Netta did not really feel at home. The family was panic stricken when Adam failed to come home one night. The story from there on is a description of the search for the missing Adam. Because of the bitter feeling between people in Israel and those in Palestine, the Hofmans were sure that Adam was the victim of Palestinian Terrorists. Netta took some risks in her effort to find out her brother's fate and who was responsible. In the process she learned to value people as individuals rather than as part of a group. This timely well-written story of a family in grief is especially important now in the present world situation. The book is directed to ages 12 and up but is also excellent for adults because it helps them see the struggle through the eyes of a young person experiencing the emotional impact of the crisis situation in Israel.
