Fantastic exploration of Great Basin Nature and History.......1999-04-13
The giant Great Basin Desert was covered by Great Lakes sized bodies of fresh water 10 000 years ago. Today it is dry and salty dotted with salty inland seas and isolated mountain ranges teeming with biodiversity.
This book is a journey through old Lake Bonneville and Lake Lahonatan to today's Lake Tahoe, Mono Lake, Great Salt Lake, and Pyramid Lake. Along the way we meet the Humboldt River and mountains of the Great Basin. A truly great read for natural history buffs and those fascinated by America's least known desert.

Don't leave home without it!.......2004-08-03
This is the essential guide for any fly fisherman who lives in or is planning a trip to Colorado. I am a recent transplant to CO and have been stumbling through trying to figure our my local streams. The amount of private property in this state is depressing with no fish/hunting signs everywhere (compared to my home state of Oregon)and going on road trips with the hopes of fishing can be quite frustrating. This book describes, with maps and hatch charts for all the major and many of the minor streams in the state where to go and when and then what to use once there. I can now take a road trip without the frustration of running into private land everywhere and find good fishing.
This is the ultimate travel companion for fly fishing in Colorado, don't leave home without it.
A Must Have for Fly Fishing in Colorado.......2003-03-18
Marty Bartholomew has not only proven himself as pro for Ross Reels and Scott Rods, an elite fly tyer, and one of the classiest individuals in the fly fishing industry, but he has now proven that he can write the most informative book available on fly fishing in Colorado. As a former fly fishing instructor, I often referred to this book as "The Bible on Fly Fishing in Colorado." Bartholomew attacks every aspect of the waters covered in this book from where to fish it, what to use, how to get there, when hatches are taking place, and even where to park. The Flyfisher's Guide to Colorado essentially takes the reader on a guided trip to the water he or she desires. This book is certainly a must have.
Complete Colorado.......2003-03-05
This book "The Fly Fisher's Guide To Colorado", is a book that stands alone in a sea of fly fishing books. A well written book indeed as author Marty Bartholomew, takes you on adventures throughout the state of Colorado. Every detail is in the book as well from hatch charts to hospital locations it is all in here. This is the most complete book I own, period. I feel this is the best choice if you are in the Colorado region, to get all the facts. There are many different versions, about various states, so many others won't miss out on these great books. I as well, met Marty at the Denver expo, a true class act!
Good planning book.......2002-02-16
I bought this book to begin planning a trip to Colorado for a week of fly fishing. This book is a good place to start. It gives a good run down of pretty much all the rivers, creeks and lakes in the state, what to expect there, what sort of fish are there, fishing expectations and hatches for different times of the season, successful flies and information on getting there - such as the road may be muddy and impassible in wet seasons. It even tells you what sort of goods and services are available in near by towns. Anyone fishing in Colorado would benefit from the book but I particularly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to Colorado and are yet unfamiliar with fishing there.
Good prep for trip.......2000-07-17
A friend had loaned me her copy of this book - and I had to have it. Combines the best of a fly fishing guide book (including hottest patterns for certain water), as well as recommendations for places to stay, and for fly shops. Thanks to my husband for buying it for me! That Amazon Wish List thing works!

There's not much of the old-style editing going on at publishing houses today. Renni Browne, veteran of William Morrow and other publishers, founded the Editorial Department in 1980 to teach fiction writers the techniques professional editors (many of whom have gone independent) use to prepare a manuscript for publication. In this book, she and senior editor Dave King share their accumulated expertise in a series of brilliantly compact lessons. One page from their simply and markedly improved version of a scene from
The Great Gatsby alone would make a compelling advertisement for their techniques. Very highly recommended. --

Book Description
Hundreds of books have been written on the art of writing. Here at last is a book by two professional editors to teach writers the techniques of the editing trade that turn promising manuscripts into published novels and short stories.
In this completely revised and updated second edition, Renni Browne and Dave King teach you, the writer, how to apply the editing techniques they have developed to your own work. Chapters on dialogue, exposition, point of view, interior monologue, and other techniques take you through the same processes an expert editor would go through to perfect your manuscript. Each point is illustrated with examples, many drawn from the hundreds of books Browne and King have edited.
Customer Reviews:
You need this book before AND after writing!.......2007-10-15
This book is a no-nonsense, to-the-point directive on how effective novel writing should look the moment it's ready to be submitted for publishing. It reads well, the examples are helpful, and in the end, the book remains a valuable reference tool. Written by people who we are trying to impress with our writing, readers need to take the authors' advice to heart when scrutinizing their writing. This book allows that to happen.
I read it at least once a year.......2007-10-05
Sometimes you can perform great by knowing how to NOT do things. This book shows you how to not write, so you can edit your text. I've used it a lot in my work as a journalist. After every chapter there are checklists, so I quickly can edit my work. I especially enjoy the chapter on beats, which I have struggled with before. Now I see it all clearer: how to use the beats, proportion, show AND tell and much more. Thanks for a great book!
For me, this books does the trick. .......2007-10-01
I joined a site called Critiquecircle. Before joining it I thought I was a writer because I sat in front of my computer and typed out stories. Sometimes a 1000 words, sometimes 5000. After uploading some of my stories to the site I found out I wasn't really a writer. There were rules to learn and skills to develop. I began buying books that were recommended to me by the critiquers like ON WRITING WELL and others but I just wasn't getting it. My writing wasn't improving. As I read this book it seemed that it was written by someone who had read my work and was telling ME exactly what I was doing wrong. In the things I had written I found almost every mistake that this book stated that writers often made. I'd recommend this book if you're someone from a normal walk of life who has decided to become a writer. I imagine people who are in college may be learning this stuff from their text books but for a normal every day person who wants to learn to write, I think this book would be a good investment.
Edit Your Story Well.......2007-09-22
This is such a good book. A Literary Agent even recommended it to me when I started editing my novel.
The tips and info in here are priceless! It's made writing so much simpler, because once you know what to look for and what to make sure you don't leave out, spotting errors and editing become almost intuitive.
Just what the doctor ordered.......2007-09-04
Working through a manuscript with this book was both eye opening and a bit painful. So much, so wrong. Oh my. I'm not complaining, mind you. My work has benefited. The book is both helpful and constructive, perhaps the single best volume on content editing I've come across, and I read many. The tone is just right with no accusations but also no coddling.
Others have gone over the content of Self Editing for Fiction Writers in detail. All I have to say is do yourself a favor. Get a copy and use it. Your work will benefit from it.
Book Description
The latest in the Pamphlet Architecture series, Seven Partly Underground Rooms and Buildings investigates unusual spaces in Italy, ranging from a honeycombed and mazelike series of rooms and stairs for midgets, to the dining chambers of a Pompeiian estate, to a half-buried sphere that serves as a place for ice storage. Ray reveals these quixotic spaces through constructed drawings, collaged photographs, and insightful text.
Mary-Ann Ray is a principal, with Robert Mangurian, of the architecture firm Studio Works in Los Angeles. A fellow of the American Academy in Rome, she is also a professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). Her projects have received various awards, including the Progressive Architecture Urban Design Award (1991). Her work also appears in "Re: American Dream".
Pamphlet Architecture, begun in 1978 by William Stout and Steven Holl, has become a popular venue for publishing the works and thoughts of a younger generation of architects. Small in scale, low in price, but large in impact, these books present and disseminate new and innovative theories.

Just right for my Bug!.......2007-10-04
Haynes manuals are always good and have saved me on many occasions from paying large workshop bills.
I just purchased a Bugeye Sprite from 1960 and the second thing I purchased was this manual from Amazon. Although I haven't used it yet, it's comforting to know its there if I have any problems.
Clear instructions with good pictures and fault diagnostic charts, anyone who's serious about working on their own car should'nt be without one.
Top Quality product - as all our other Haynes Manuals.......2007-01-20
Book is great, as always. Arrived ahead of schedule and in great shape. Thanks!
Invaluable aid to a Midget owner.......1999-09-10
I have this book and despite the occasional grease stain I have found it practically invaluable. I went through a complete engine/transmission/and rear end rebuild with out troubles. This book has conversion tables, linguistic translations and orignal specifications for the Midget. The amount of information in this book is well worth the price.
Advantages and disadvantages..........1998-09-24
The manual the other reviewer is obviously referring to is a reprint of the factory service and driver's manuals. (If that's not enough of a clue to identify it, you're out of luck...) Thus, it has all the original information. Definitely good to have.
HOWEVER, since it is the factory manual, it refers to all the dealership tools, most of which are unavailable, or are prohibitively expensive. This is where the Haynes manual shines. Since they base their manual on an actual disassembly and reassembly of the car, they can (and do) offer ways to do the job without the factory tools. I have them both, and refer to each frequently.
I don't understnd the problem with terminology. Both manuals use the same (British) terminology, and the Haynes has a "translation table". In any case, either one beats the equivalent Clymer or Chilton's.
Barely sufficient for beginners........1998-04-14
The Haynes' assume you know too much. They leave out certain important details on occasion and don't always identify all the parts they talk about with a diagram. If I wasn't already somewhat familiar with some of the terminology, in many cases I wouldn't have (and sometimes didn't) know what in the heck they were talking about. Really what is needed is a narrower scope and more than one book on the Sprite/Midgets. If you are serious about working on your Spridget, get a more complete official manual (hint). I won't be rude and say what the book is in this review, but Amazon carries this better one too.

Considering karting? Start here........2005-07-19
Jim Hall's "Kart Driving Techniques" is an excellent introduction to race kart driving. He frequently points out and emphasizes areas where race karts are different from other types of cars, and how those differences will affect driving techniques. He doesn't spend a lot of time on analysis of the racing line, but that's good in this case, as not only are there are books that already cover that subject in depth, but this also frees up space for other relevant topics. It also has dedicated chapters to shifter kart racing and dirt-oval racing, as there are significant differences between the two.
Hall's book is worth full price, and a steal for less.
Book Description
In November 1938 a crowd of more than 120 tiny actors ambled through the gates of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios in Hollywood. Headed for the set of one of America's all-time classic movies, The Wizard of Oz, they were about to become known as Munchkins.
Few movies have ever achieved the popularity and acclaim of The Wizard of Oz. It made the reputations of Judy Garland and many others, but ironically, the diminutive actors and actresses who peopled Munchkinland weren't even listed in the credits. Most of us have never heard their names. Now their story is finally told in a new and revised edition as thirty ex-Munchkins reveal their amazing personal stories.
The Munchkins of Oz offers a fresh perspective on the filming of The Wizard of Oz and what went on behind the scenes. We learn about life on the Munchkinland set, how they were recruited, intimate memories of the stars, and the Munchkins' lives before and after Oz. More than 300 photos, many first published in this book, illustrate and enhance the lively text. ENTERTAINMENT; FILM 300-PLUS B/W ILLUSTRATIONS 8-PAGE COLOR INSERT 8 X 10, 224 PAGES PAPERBACK

The Munchkins revisited.......2007-05-31
As a child, my very favorite movie was THE WIZARD of OZ. My favorite scene was when the tiny Muchkins "Came out ,came out, wherever they were".
I always wondered about the actors and actresses that played the parts of the delightful little Munchkins, & therefore I was thrilled to finally get this book (as a Christmas gift).
This book will not disappoint. Not only does it give a wonderful background as to where the Munchkin actors came from, but also this book goes into specifics, regarding the most famous of the Munchkins actors/actresses (eg: the Lollipop Boys, etc). Such endearing folks they were! (Sadly, most of them have passed away by now...sniff!)
After reading this book, you will forever love and appreciate the little people that were part of such a unique movie.
What a Fun Book.......2005-09-02
We would certainly highly recommend this book! Meeting several little people throughout our years, our family found this book to be a Top 10 book! It is full of stories of the Munchkins, and what it was really like to be a part of OZ. We found out things we never knew, even after hearing so many personal stories of those who shared their experiences with us personally. We believe Meinhardt Raabe is the last of the Munchkins still alive, and would also highly recommend his book, Memories of a Munchkin: An Illustrated Walk Down the Yellow Brick Road.
Oz-some book!!.......2005-07-21
I loved this book so much that this is the 3rd edition that I've bought. I bought the first edition back in 1989 and the revised edition many years later. When this one came out, I knew I had to have it too. With each revised edition, Stephen Cox really outdoes himself. I've found that any revised edition of this author's books are always even better than the original, as he adds more info and photographs!
This book is a must-have for all Oz-fans, young and old. It's filled with rare photographs, little-known trivia and fascinating tid-bits. There is also a section about bloopers (find out about a scene where Judy Garland can clearly be seen wearing brown bedroom slippers instead of the Ruby Slippers!) and "urban legends" (no, the Munchkins did not get drunk & disorderly every night as portrayed in the Chevy Chase/Carrie Fisher movie "Under the Rainbow"!! Nor did a Munchkin commit suicide on set during filming; F.Y.I.: it's a large, exotic bird moving its head & wings that people think is the hanging Munchkin).
Reading this book will increase your Oz-IQ several points! What are you waiting for? Buy this book now!
Great book! Great pictures! Great stories!.......2003-03-21
I first read this book when the first edition came out, and was really impressed with the depth in which the author went to gather the information for this book -- hours spent locating and contacting the surviving Munchkins, all the interviews that took place, etc. This is NOT one of my favorite movies, by any means, but I always liked the first seen in Oz, where Dorothy meets the Munchkins, and this book really showed you who these people were and how they managed to get into the movie. Alot of great pictures help make the book really stand out. With each reissue (this is the third edition of the book), the author is able to provide a little bit more information on the Munchkin actors and actresses, and provides additional pictures to keep the experience of the book fresh. I would highly recommend not just this edition, but the two previous editions if you are able to find them. A great read!
The Lollipop Guild Lives.......2000-05-12
This is probably the most interesting Oz book in my collection. Finally someone reveals who these little people are, and in such an entertaining manner. I couldn't put this book down. I've read so many books about Prod. 1060, aka "The Wizard of Oz" (MGM) which are dry and stale. This book puts the whole experience into perspective and provides a human side to the Munchkin actors. I'm glad to hear some of them survive. The photographs in here are glorious. The color photography jumps out at you. Bravo to Steven Cox for doing such a handsome job and such a respectful job with "The Munchkins of Oz." If you want a book on Oz that is unique--this is the one.
