5 out of 5 stars An amazing account of an amazing people.......2006-03-21

All of the history buffs and Native American descendants and people in general should buy this book to have a bigger and brighter outlook on the "indians" that our country so badly abused and misunderstood.

Amazing book.

5 out of 5 stars My soul sings.......2005-08-30

In a nutshell this book is a compilation of quotations from many Native Americans.

However this book expands far beyond that nutshell. It shows many sides of Indian thought and belief interweaving both spirituality and history. The book is organised in an affective way, first having quotations showing the Indians willingness to co-exist with the white man and slowly that willingness fading into bitterness and anger as the settlers destroyed the land and displaced the Indians from their ancestral homes.

Even though 'Touch the Earth' might seem like an potentially depressing book it is very far from that. I found it very uplifting. Many of the quotations spoke to some deep part of my heart that made my soul smile. The archive pictures through out the book alone make me love it. It is a book full of words from wise men, so inspiring yet at other moments so anguished.

"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of the buffalo in the winter time. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the Sunset." -- Crowfoot

"I hear no longer the songs of the women as they prepare the meal. The antelope have gone; the buffalo wallos are empty. [...] We are like birds with a broken wing. My heart is cold within me. My eyes are growing dim - I am old..." -- Chief Plenty-Coups

The one thing I will say about "Touch the Earth" is that you have to be in the right mood to read it. Most people cannot sit down and read a book cover to cover that is filled with quotation after quotation. Also some things that are said are so deep that I just had to sit for awhile and think about them. If you are not the type of person who liked history this is not the kind of book for you. However if the history of the Native American's fascinated you, as it does me, I would definitely recommend this gem.

5 out of 5 stars Big lessons from the Great Spirit.......2005-08-09

Have you ever at any time in your life truly felt connected to the earth, all its inhabitants, the plants, the rocks, the wind? Touch the Earth is almost like a Native American prayer book and it examines this direct connection between our land's original inhabitants and their world around them. Not only did they feel this connection, but they lived it every day. Consequently they did not understand the White Man and his only going to church on Sundays.

As I've read and reread my copy, I often wonder what it would be like if we had respect for all the things created by God's hand instead of for only the ones we pick and choose to respect and honor. By favoring one species over another, we have dangerously tipped the ecological balance and not in a good way. By failing to understand the links between all the elements that make up the earth, we humans are well on our way to fouling our own nest.

I recommend reading this book late at night just before bedtime. Read only one or two essays at a time and allow the words to touch you. Perhaps you will remember why it is important to Touch the Earth, our Mother.

5 out of 5 stars Native American philosophy has much to teach us.......2004-02-29

The letter from Chief Seattle to the US President.. "How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land? ..." and the vision of Black Elk ..."The sacred hoop of his people was only one of many hoops, all joined together to make one great circle, the great hoop of all peoples.." brought home to me the fact that the Native American philosophy of living has so much to teach us. They were closely connected to the earth, loved and respected it, while we treat it with violence; they were closely connected to our universal Mother and seemed to truly understand humankind's place in the universe while we trust in our technology and the wealth it brings us. The Native Americans appeared to have lived their lives with their two natures - materialistic and spiritual - in harmony while we have over emphasized the material and neglected the spiritual. While we cannot turn the clock back and ride horses and live in tents - nor would we want to - but surely there must be some principles that they incorporated into their lives which we can discover and build into our lives to help redress the balance of our two natures. So I turned to this book to see if there is some Native American wisdom which would enrich my life. I was certainly encouraged by the Book of-the-Month Club comment on the back cover "Simply but eloquently, the selections tell of the Indians' relationship with the earth, their kinship with all of nature's creatures, and their unity with the elements. They speak of the harmony that existed between the Indian and the land, a harmony that was disrupted as 'the hairy man from the east' encroached still further into their territory." and ".. one cannot help but be struck anew by their wisdom and their prophetic vision..."

I read this passage in the introduction: "In this book, the Indians speak for themselves, of the quality of their life. The passages that make up the book have been taken from speeches of Indians living in all parts of the North American continent, between the 16th and 20th centuries. They speak with courtesy and respect of the land, of animals, of the objects which made up the territory in which they lived. They saw no virtue in imposing their will over their environment: private acquisition, almost without exception, was to them a way to poverty, not to riches. The meaning of their life was identified through their relationships with each other and their homelands - all of which was given depth and resonance by memory" and understood that here in this volume I would find what I was looking for. Many of the passages reflect attempts by the Indians to offer their ideas to the whiteman but we responded by destroying their way of life and with it much of the wisdom we need today. We are indeed fortunate to have this collection to refer to. We cannot turn the clock back; we cannot undo the deeds of prior generations. But perhaps we can at least take the trouble to reflect on what these wise people were trying to teach our forebears and perhaps we will find some words of wisdom that will help us to live our lives with our two natures - materialistic and spiritual - more closely in balance.

If we fail to do this I fear that the prophecy in the introduction will come true. "It is well understood that the only decent future for us who live in America now is through a rediscovery of our environment. We need to establish a right relationship with the land and its resources; otherwise, the destruction of the Indian will be followed by the destruction of nature; and in the destruction of nature will follow the destruction of ourselves."

5 out of 5 stars An uplifting glimpse into the Native American heart & mind........1997-10-14

I purchased this precious compendium of wisdom expecting to find some interesting Native American quotations to add to my 400+ collection of quotation books. I discovered an inspirationial book which deftly interweaves philosophy, ecology, history, anthropology and spirituality. Actually, it is a first hand account of the eradication of the American Indian culture and extermination of their peoples spoken by the tribal leaders. Yet it is uplifting and inspiring, not desolating. Page after page I found my heart glowing, or chills running up my back, as I was touched by the pure, noble, plain yet profound talk of these great yet simple men-- Seattle, Tecumseh, Black Hawk, Geronimo and lesser known chiefs of Choctaw, Nez Perce, Yuma, Hopi, Chickasaw, Sioux, and Cree nations. They, with great nobility and anguish, speak the case for their simple way of life, embracing nature and sharing its bounties with all their equal partners-- the buffalo, eagle, bear, trees, wind, earth and sky, all part of the great spirit. The archive photos alone are worth the bargain price of this treasure.

4 out of 5 stars I found this book very helpful.......2002-08-15

I found this and other books by Hugh very helpful when I read them over 12 years ago. I was able to work through some depression I was experiencing from my parents getting divorced. I am now sending copies to my brother, who is having a tough time. I hope they help him as much as they did me.

5 out of 5 stars part of my transformation.......2000-11-03

This book was recommended to me in 1974 by a family therapist, as my estranged husband and i were involved in family and individual counseling. The ideas presented in this book helped me let go of old hurts and unhealthy ways of thinking and living. Two of Mr. Prathers books, and one by John Powell, FULLY HUMAN FULLY ALIVE, helped me to change my life totally for the better. I let go of my hurtful marriage environment, and trusted in luck, faith, and optimism to go to graduate school to get into a career field that seemed promising and a better match for me. Since that was 26 years ago, I now have the advantage of hindsight to say YES, THESE BOOKS HELPED ME GET THROUGH AND BEYOND sadness, disappointment, dullness, feeling trapped. I truly don't believe I would have made the necessary changes, had I not read Prather's ( and Powell's) books. I thank you Hugh Prather for hleping me rescue myself.

5 out of 5 stars Whole, Clear & Solid Reading !.......2000-09-17

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have an original copy from 1972 that my Mother left me in her book collection. Inside I found Mr. Prather's observations very insightful as well as some startling personal revelations I felt. This book is very well written with his honest thoughts and expressions that really give us something to think about within ourselves. I found his work to have several meanings. For anyone that decides to stay in the now and really read it, perhaps while you're in the quiet, there is a message. For anyone that doesn't come away with any sort of message from Mr. Prather's piece of written Art here, is perhaps not really ready yet or looking for it.- James D. 1 out of 5 stars Overly trite and simplistic.......2000-08-18

This book is filled with trite personal "revelations" that have very little complexity. Mr. Prather seems to think that scribblings into a notebook is somehow "poetry," but this is certainly not the case with this book. The writing in here is far from poetic.

    Book Description

GREATER TIBET: Where Earth Touches the Heavens travels beyond the Tibetan Autonomous Region to reveal the less seen faces and places of Qinghai, northern Yunnan, Gansu and western Sichuan. Photographer Jimmy Lam braves hardy terrain and weather to capture the atmosphere of a land that is newly opened to the rest of the world. Lam's untiring fascination with Greater Tibet has taken him many times to various parts of the Tibet region. He has developed a keen sensitivity towards the seasons of Tibetan nature and culture.

In this beautiful album, Lam shares his personal perspective on the landscapes of Greater Tibet, its peoples and their beliefs and way of life. Award-winning photographer Ed Kashi calls this collection "sensitive, textured and photogenic" and an "accomplishment [that] lends a vital and new view into a land that few people get to see and even fewer try to photograph".

Jimmy Lam goes beyond the stereotypical coffee-table book and makes photographs that examine the identity and place of the people of Tibet. I had the good fortune to meet him this summer and hear him speak about the work, and quickly discovered that he is a gifted photographer who is passionate about his photography, which is readily apparent in the photographs from this book. He's also in possession of excellent photographic craft, which is not an issue to the average viewer (as it should be) but appeals to photographers with a keen eye for detail. There are lots of very subtle nuances to his work that encourages viewers to slow down the pace a bit and take the time to understand the Tibetan people better, which is always an honorable goal with a book about people from a different place.

We've been reading this book since my son was about 4 months old (he just turned 2), and I credit this book for inspiring much of his love of reading. Although he's not no longer as fixated on it as he once was (Richard Scarry is now his obsession!), he still loves to look at the beautiful pictures and brightly colored flowers, animals, fruits, and other natural elements.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for someone starting out.......2007-04-01

This book is an interesting overview of basic balisong topics. I wasn't quite a beginner when I purchased this, so much of it was useless, but for someone just starting out, this book will get you started very quickly. It covers all the basics and it's filled with pictures that are easy to follow. If you already handle a balisong fairly well and want to expand your skills, you're better off using the internet to find online resources for techniques that are more advanced. Overall a good book.

              4 out of 5 stars Bali-Manual.......2006-08-10

This was a pretty informative, well written book. It lacked a little depth, but that wasn't a problem seeing as how I was up and using the balisong in no time.

              4 out of 5 stars Interesting concepts. . ........2006-07-02

This was an interesting book. It would, however, be easy for a novice to misunderstand a few concepts, as they are not always presented clearly. For example, in the section on traditional slashing methods, it seemed as if the author was advocating a 19 step kata to be followed precisely when confronting an adversary. I doubt very much if this was the author's intent. Indeed, a 19 step kata -- with several plates illustrated with a series of numbered arrows (then later backed up with B&W photos) is provided, along with instructions to memorize the moves as shown. This is wrong. It is important to repeatedly practice certain movements to integrate them into one's "muscle memory"; and it is advisable that all multi-step moves be performed in a flowing and circular manner; but I feel that the author meant to convey that, while the kata should be practiced, only select portions of it are meant to be used during a given confrontation, as all scenarios are different (i.e., a flowing 3-step movement, rather than the entire kata).

Other concepts were presented that I have not seen elsewhere. The use of balisong as a fistload is nothing new, nor is the use of the tang to crush pressure points. Snapping the tang -- like a sap -- is also familiar to FMA enthusiasts. However, using the partially opened balisong -- both as an extended fistload and a hinged sap -- is something I've never seen before. Of course, such moves are unique to balisong and cannot be applied to other knives.

Another interesting topic was that of compelling an opponent to "yield." One technique finished by brushing the opponent's arm wth the flat of the blade, rather than cutting him, as a "warning." Another finished with the blade lightly resting on the opponent's throat. However, this is not the Phillipines, and a "Master" who spares an opponent is not likely to receive a humble apology from a bested former aggressor. Crackheads and wannabe Gs have no concept of honor or chivalry, and would blindside you the moment you turned your back to walk away. Sad, but true.

This was a good book, with unique concepts and sound advice. One of the few things I took issue with was the recommendation that one utilize an "aerial" opening technique versus an opponent!!! That is known as "show boating" and I wouldn't even try that against someone who was both drunk AND retarded. If your EDC knife is a balisong, this would be a good book to have. If you carry something else (as most of us do), the section on slashing techniques is worthy of study.

2 out of 5 stars Average brief overview to knife fighting.......2006-02-21

I don't claim to be a master knife fighter, but I have found most of the information in this book elsewhere on the Internet and available for free. There were some parts that I found new and interesting. For example the chapters on rolling and closed knife techniques.

But, everything thing in this book is still just an overview. The chapters are very short and don't go into much depth. They just give you a few pictures to work with. I was hoping to see detailed step by step manuevers for foot work and perhaps a detailed map of the body labelling pressure points.

The book was not what I expected. Try google before you commit to buying a book.

5 out of 5 stars Sonny Umpad - a creative master in Filipino martial arts.......2005-02-26

Sonny Umpad is an innovative master of Filipino martial arts, creator of the Visayan Corto Cadena system. I've had the privilege of knowing him for many years, and I've watched many skilled practitioners of other systems come to him for advanced training. This book is an introduction to one aspect of his system, co-written by Sid Campbell, another martial art master, and Gary Cagaanan, one of Sonny's long-time students. Anyone with an interest in Filipino martial arts should really have this in their library.

              5 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Wanted.......2007-10-13

The U.S. and World maps are exactly what I was looking for and I am quite pleased with what they sent me. Especially for such a low price.

The thinness of the paper is not an issue since they are tacked to the wall.

I recommend these to anyone who is looking to enhance their geological knowledge without spending large amounts of money.
              Thanks so much!
              Blessings!!!

4 out of 5 stars Thin Paper Maps Turn Out To Be a Substantial Choice.......2007-01-05

I bought these maps for my 8-year old grandson to supplement his neophyte's interest in geography. The product description did state that the maps, being an "economy" grade, were printed on thin paper. I ignored this fact and so had only myself to blame when the maps, upon arrival, were very thin indeed. As well, the size was startling: very, very large. I failed to find appropriate wall space to hang them permanently as I had intended.

A bit of ingenuity showed up just in time. I secured each map with thumb tacks to the top shelf of two low bookcases. When we are not consulting them, I just let them roll up. They do so quite gingerly due to the thin paper! When unrolled, they fall evenly to the floor and we keep them in place with a small book at each corner. A long knitting needle serves as a pointer; not only does the pointer prevent touching the maps, it also gives each of us the opportunity to be the "teacher" or the traveler.

The size of the maps is also very good for a young geographer because the states, countries and continents---as well as the bodies of water--- are large enough for easy distinguishing and for charting distances. Sometimes my grandson puts one or both maps on the floor and uses his cars, play figures and/or airplanes to take "trips" for imaginary stories he concocts.

He loves the national flags that border the bottom of the world map, so much so that he now knows almost all of them by sight and has even made up a spelling game to learn the spelling of the nations. Here again, the size of the flags has aided his learning efforts.

All in all, for the easy price, the maps are quite a bargain. What seemed to be the maps' disappinting qualities turned out to be none at all.

This is a wonderful teaching tool for classrooms that have enough space. Not recommended for home use,...which is what i bought it for. They are two GIGANTIC posters that I put up any how, but later decided to remove them for the simple fact they ruin my decor. >smile <

                    Book Description

The Yangtze in our story is not China's river, but rather a magical place in the Canadian countryside on the outskirts of a small town. There, in the 1950s, a group of children look forward to what promises to be a glorious summer. There are six of them—all different in age and character. Nancy is a down-to-earth girl, and her only challenge in life is Andrew, her elder brother. Then there are Clare, Amy, Sandra, and Tracy. The children have known each other and their families for most of their lives, but this is the year when everything they ever thought they knew will change.

3 out of 5 stars does pretty book cover = excellent content ????.......2005-06-13

From the very moment I saw the cover of this novel, "Raspberries on the Yangtze", I was deeply attracted. The soft beige and pink just attracts your attention and makes your want to read it, but the actual content might be a shocker. This novel explores the curiosity of several young children on the way to becoming young teenagers. The main character, Nancy, is facing many problems and issues coming at her, issues such as teen pregnancy, re-marriage, and exposure of deep, dark secrets. Some parts of this book I disliked were the beginning of this novel, which started with a statement that was left hanging and never explained or explored afterwards. Also in my opinion, I find that there are too many characters, therefore making it very confusing for the reader to understand what is exactly happening to each person. Overall, if you are bored or just want to read something to pass time, then this would be a book for you, but don't expect a marvelous or best selling novel.

4 out of 5 stars At least it has a nice cover..........2004-06-04

Yes, the cover is really the only thing that made me get this book(from the library). It's really cool. But anyways... about the book. I guess I'm the first reviewer. So. This book. It's about a girl named Nancy and her brother Andrew and her best friends Amy and Clare. Also the snob, Sandra and her older sis Tracy. Nancy is an imaginative girl. I guess she's pretty young since she plays with dolls but she charges 15 cents for info on the "birds and the bees". They're british but they live in Canada. The biggest river in China is the name of a fence Nancy hangs around with her 2 friends.
Well Nacy comes across a few surprises along the way.
                    THE END
I must admit I only read up to page 47/148 and I read ahead a little to the end and stuff(I really should stop doing that, It gives the whole story away and then it's just boring cuz you know what will happen but...) THIS BOOK, OH MY GOSH!!! From the first page, no chapter, it was just BORING! I don't know why but I didn't feel like reading it anymore so I moved on to a better book. I don't think I'd recommend this book AT ALL. Hope this 1 review helps in some way......... (If you're up to reading all my useless babble)
