Book Description
In this funny, honest, personal "natural history," Michael Tougias describes his evolution from hapless flatlander into acclaimed outdoor writer. Aching to become a real mountain man, he buys a remote mountaintop cabin only to find that misadventure follows calamity in his encounters with wildlife, the locals, and nature. In There's a Porcupine in My Outhouse, Tougias reveals his deepening respect for and connection to the natural world and how this transforms his ideas on all aspects of life. As his love of the outdoors grows, so does his feeling of responsibility and stewardship toward the environment.
Customer Reviews:
I'm STILL laughing!.......2005-10-19
This was my first adventure into the world of author Michael Tougias and I haven't looked back. I admit, the title is what prompted me to pick this book up since I'd not yet had the pleasure of reading anything by this author. I sat down to read and was up until 2am finishing the last page. It'll have you laughing right out loud! I felt as if I were there sharing in all the antics of Mike and his friends through his delightful descriptions. This is one of those books I'll go back and read again and again.
Well-written, Funny, Engaging.......2002-12-27
Michael Tougias's latest book, There's a Porcupine in My Outhouse, is a well-written, humorous account of some his adventures (and misadventures) surrounding his rustic camp in northern Vermont. Tougias bought the small A-frame when he was only 22 years old. Over the years, with the outdoors world as his teacher, he learns to live with nature, rather than by asserting dominance and control over it. Middle-aged suburbanites, such as myself, will readily see aspects of their own youthful development in Tougias's stories.
Don't expect the eloquence and introspection of a Thoreau. Tougias's style is light and very engaging. Also, as a bonus, the book is filled with great recommendations for further reading about naturalists and mountain men. The pages turn very quickly, which is unfortunate, since there are only 160 of them, including lots of porcupine filler. I found myself wanting more after the tales came to a rather abrupt ending. Further development of the three characters might have added to the tales. Overall, I enjoyed the book immensely.
Cover to Cover , a Smile on Every Page.......2002-10-09
After putting my three year old to bed for the night, I collapsed into my favorite chair, picked up "There's a Porcupine in My Outhouse", and found myself welcoming the morning sun with a smile on my face, memories my own misadventures, and thoughts of childhood friends. A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining book. Michael Tougias has the uncanny nack of combining an extensive knowlege of the outdoors along with Wit and heart of a great storyteller. I found myself longing for my own special place, and to share adventures with Michael, Boomer, and Cogs as they learn about the great outdoors and themselves. I will return to this book over and over to share their stories.
Hilarious adventures from a great writer.......2002-10-03
Michael Tougias, a well-respected outdoor writer, has written a wonderful book about his growth from a young novice outdoorsman to a competent expert. "There's A Porcupine in My Outhouse" is funny portrait of one man's experience learning about the natural world. After I finally stopped laughing, I realized that I had even learned a lot in the process of reading his book.

Not very good........2007-05-30
This book isn't particularly good for anything. It covers many aspects of the sport, but doesn't do any one aspect justice. I was especially unhappy with the the rules section. And who could forget Brandi Chastain ripping off her jersey after the penalty kick . . . .
Soccer for Spectators.......2005-10-14
An excellent refresher for those out-of-touch with soccer as well as for those just learning the game. As the parent of a former high school and college soccer player, but that was a few years back, I thought I knew the game. Now with 4 grandchildren playing, I wanted a easy-to-read refresher. This is it. I applaud the writer and encourage all who are players, or spectators, to spend a few evenings with this easy, and fun to read, book. It is very well done.
Phil
Great intro.......2002-06-15
This is a book, especially for parents who are trying to figure out the game and people who'd like to learn more about it.
A complete waste of time.......2001-12-11
This is the first time I have reviewed a book for Amazon. I am doing this because I consider this book to be 100% garbage.
If you are looking for a book full of annoying cross references (i.e. see page 118; see page 73) and for a book which repeats the same quotes or phrases in different chapters (was there really no editor?) BUY THIS BOOK.
Also, if you are looking for cheap tid-bits and trivia about the US women's soccer team (was it really necessary to write three times about one female ripping her shirt off after a goal?) BUT THIS BOOK.
If you want to have a general overview about the rules of Soccer but want nothing of strategy, technique, training, then BUY THIS BOOK. (or why not just go to the FIFA website and download the same rules which make up 50% of this book)
But if you want to learn how to play or coach soccer, forget it. This book is a COMPLETE waste of time.
Excellent intro for newcomers; solid content for veterans.......2001-02-20
Carries on the excellent tradition of the "for dummies" books: offers solid content and information for veteran soccer afficionados while organized as a well-written, well rounded introduction for the novice. Gives comprehensive overviews about all aspects of the game -- rules, strategies, the world of professional soccer (the leagues, tournaments, events), as well as an excellent history of the game and its development. It's refreshing to see a book for newcomers that doesn't strip things down - there is a wealth of well-researched information here that is useful for the experienced fan or participant.

At last, the Dummies series is tackling football. Former Raider all-pro defensive end and current Fox TV analyst Howie Long calls the signals, and if he doesn't always go deep--he's got a lot of ground to cover--at least he connects. With all its X's and O's, football is a complicated sport, and Long works hard to smooth the way: "Once you break through that initial fear of being overwhelmed by football and what you don't understand," he counsels, "I know everything else about the game, like dominoes, will fall into place." In his role as guide, Long plays those dominoes, from peewees to the pros to the fantasy leagues, explaining positions, analyzing offenses and defenses, and detailing strategies. As with all Dummies guides, the fun part is the "Part of Tens," the series of top-10 lists that dig in for the final chapter. He scores big with his inclusions of John Hannah and Hugh McElhenny among the greatest offensive players ever, but should be penalized for overemphasizing tight ends and forgetting the electricity that wide receivers bring to the game. This, of course, reflects a defensive end's natural bias; since they muck it up more with the hulkier tight ends, they simply let the speedballs fly by. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
Are you one of the millions of people across America are intrigued by professional football – and all types and levels of football? Perhaps you have a friends or a number of friends who have made the football season a ritual, from the last weekend in August until Super Bowl Sunday at the end of January. To be a part of that experience, you need to have a working knowledge of the game.
Football For Dummies, 2nd Edition, can provide you with that knowledge and help you relate to the passionate football fans in your life. On the surface, football may seem to be a very complicated game. The game becomes far less intimidating once you begin to understand the fundamentals of the game. After you break through that initial fear of being overwhelmed by football and what you don't understand, everything else about the game will fall into place, like dominoes. Get ready to find answers to all your football questions, such as:
- Why do they call it the "gridiron" anyway?
- Is the ball really made of pigskin, or is that an inside joke?
- Why do you get six points for a touchdown but only three points for a field goal?
- Does it really matter how all those guys line up on the field?
- Does it really mean something when the officials do those funny signals with their arms, or are they just bored out there?
If you don't know a touchdown from a touchback or an interference penalty from an interception, then this book is for you. You'll find easy-to-understand explanations of these topics and more:
- The football season
- Rules and regulations
- Keys to successful offensive line play
- Defense tactics and strategies
- Coaches, general managers, and other important folks

This second edition of Football For Dummies has been updated to cover new teams, stadiums, and players.

Just like the title states..........2007-09-04
My son got this because he was going to try football this year, well it didn't work out, so I think I'm going to sell the book. It does have a lot of info though. Definitely good book for beginners.
Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
Football for Dummies by Howie Long is actually a reasonable book. It would probably be ok for showing to non-yanks, as well, to try and fill them in on the basics of the gridiron, and how it is covered and watched.
Gives detail on positions, downs, the basic rules, all the sort of useful information for the casual viewer or those starting to want to learn.
Touchdown for the Dummies team!.......2007-06-08
I love Howie Long. Let me just get that out of the way. His inimitable style on Fox NFL Sunday just gets the perfect platform with the publishing of his Football for Dummies book. Howie makes it clear that his guide to the ins and outs of football is not just for the novice fan. He takes great pains to be as thorough and yet, as entertaining as he can, while delving into the mechanics and the glories of the sport he devoted his life and his heart to. A great reference to pull off the shelf when you don't understand why the ref made the call he just made, or how the game works when your spouse is too busy watching the game to explain it to you. :-)
My husband, yes my husband watches Football with me now.......2007-03-08
I bought this book for my husband because he just didn't get it. Now he'll tell me what I missed, and can explain it too, wait he might know more than me now, gotta go read.
book report.......2007-01-10

First Time Soccer Coach.......2006-11-06
My 5 year old signed up for instructional soccer, the local parks and rec. deparment needed coaches, next thing you know I'm a soccer coach. Step one, buy a book that will get me started on the right foot, and that's exactly what this book was. This book provided me with the guidelines for dealing with the parents as well as providing me with a refresher on the ins and outs of soccer. I would recommend this to any coach just starting out. If you have previous knowledge of soccer either playing or coaching this may not be the book for you as it is very basic.

GET this book.....!.......2007-07-30
The author REALLY knows his stuff as oppossed to some of the other writers of "for dummies" books! He truly has a love for the subject and it shows!
Highly recommended!
:)
Amazingly helpful.......2007-07-12
I have always been curious about just what is fantasy football, and have passed up a few opportunities to join in because I lacked the confidence to join a league. Martin Signore spells out all of the ins the outs the dos and the don'ts in a very easy and understandable way. I can't wait for the season to start and hone in my newfound skills!
I'm no dummy..........2007-07-11
and neither are you. Don't waste your first season playing fantasy football by not being prepared. FFFD was designed to help new players avoid the pifalls that all of us hardened vets made back in the day...
FFFD explains how the game works, how to get started and even where to play online! There are also plenty of detailed, proven methods for drafting a great fantasy team and managing your team during the football season.
Is this a shameless plug? Of course it is, but I think the book is unique and I wish I had read it before I started playing...

Book Description
The words you use say a lot about you. Grammar makes a lasting impression on friends, co-workers, and teachers, but learning the rules has always been boring. That's why the folks at The Princeton Review created
Grammar Smart.
Grammar Smart uses a witty, irreverent approach to help individuals write and speak with greater clarity and confidence. Instead of boring readers with countless rules and confusing grammatical terms, The Princeton Review shows them the logic behind each correct sentence. Everything in
Grammar Smart is nuts-and-bolts English designed to help readers express themselves more clearly. They'll learn how to choose between "that" and "which" and when to use "as" instead of "like," and they'll know for sure if this is between "you and me" or "you and I."
Includes:
• The basic parts of speech -- nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.
• Pronoun-verb agreement and parallel construction
• Tips on how to avoid misplaced modifiers and dangling participles
• Lively, humorous examples to illustrate meanings
• Brief question-and-answer reviews
Customer Reviews:
Good grammar guide.......2007-02-19
Great review for students of English, or as my students would write, "It's a grammer [sic] book."
Grammar Smart, 2nd Edition.......2006-12-25
I think this book is great. It tells us everything, but since its purpose is to serve as a reference book, I thought the outside remarks, such as "nobody expects you to know everything" is really not needed. I found out a lot about grammar from this book. However, some information needs to be explained further. They don't have enough examples of different types of sentences for every component in writing. The main problem with this book is that my English teacher is requiring the class to practically memorize the whole book and get tested on it, but this is a personal problem and has nothing to do with the quality of this book. I give this book 5 stars for its overall review of grammar. Minus 1 star for lack of examples. Thus, 4 stars.
Good concept, but missed the target........2002-10-13
Grammar is boring, frustrating, and complex. At least, that's the impression I got from taking it in school. This book attempts to take a fun (well, not-so-boring) approach to explain it all... And for the most part it does well. It's concise, and the examples are good. Where things fall apart is when the book refers to parts of grammar that haven't been explained yet. For example, starting with Quick Quiz #8 (page 25), the reader is asked to identify prepositional phrases, but phrases and clauses aren't covered until page 59. Naturally, you'll miss a lot of the questions. The answers to the quizzes seldom have explanations. If an answer seems to contradict a grammar rule or just not make sense, you're left hanging. Discouraging? You bet. If you were confused by grammar in school, this book may help -- but don't expect it to answer all your questions or eliminate frustration with the topic.
EXCELLENT.......2002-09-11
This is book is great. It is well organized, complete, and simply written. The exercises provide great practice. It also highlights common grammatical mistakes that always show up on examinations. You can read this book in one day and understand what you've read.
GRAMMAR FOR VERBAL TEST.......2002-02-09
ITS A GREAT BOOK FOR VERBAL TESTS LIKE GMAT
BUT ITS NOT FOR IN DEPTH LEARNING ENGLISH
Customer Reviews:
Could have used this when I was in High School!.......2007-10-03
Excellent review and insight into the world of SAT and GRE. Beside the vocabulary exercises, the introduction and study skill hints are vitally helpful. If you want to improve your SAT verbal score by 15 - 25 %, this book will help you do it. I'm saving a copy for my son when he is reaches High School.
Good, but multiple typos.......2007-09-10
I am halfway through this book right now in preparation for the GRE and must commend its vocabulary and format. It repeats words as you continue through it to give you a more flexible understanding, and although I cannot rate its usefulness for standardized tests, I do have faith in the work that it puts you through.
However, I must point out that the reader has to be on the lookout for typos that either misspell words, add apostrophes instead of letters, imprecise definitions (or definitions whose emphasis is the opposite from the truth), and even an incorrect answer on a quiz's answer sheet. If you use another dictionary to, say, compile your own list of words to memorize, you'll nullify this problem, but it is rather unacceptable for a book on words to mess them up so frequently. Still, though I haven't looked into the alternatives, I would recommend this resource for your word-boosting needs.
Words for Smart Test Takers 2nd Edition (Academic Test Preparation Series).......2007-02-09
A giant step in the right direction for MAT, SAT, GRE and overall knowledge.
Excellent Vocab Guide for GRE!.......2007-01-16
Many of the words I saw on the GRE test were in the words lists at the beginning on this book: 99 Words for Smart Test Takers and their GRE word list.
I found it to be a relief to have a smaller list of words to work with (rather than Barron's 3,500 words) that were actually on the test.
Good book, but useful with other electronic devices.......2006-05-25
Vocabulary is indeed quite important to get a good score. What helped me the most, as a supplement to this book, was a cell-phone based wordlist by applimobile.com.

Book Description
When he first meets Countess von Loewen, Jordan finds himself obliging her by burying a quartz skull she claims is cursed. She_s not your typical neighbor. But soon she employs him as her gardener, and Jordan eventually grows to care about the lonely old lady. Besides, the countess believes in him as nobody ever has; she knows Jordan can become whatever he chooses. Jordan has enough to deal with in this new town. At school, only the tough, cool kids show any interest; first they tease him, then exploit him. And when they decide to give Jordan a taste of life on the inside with pool parties, girls who seem interested, a great car to cruise around in, Jordan is hooked. He has to be part of this group. So when Jordan agrees to steal the quartz skull he_s been blabbing about, it seems like a pretty easy test of his loyalty. After all, the countess doesn_t want it anymore, does she? Before he knows it, however, Jordan finds himself in too deep. His continual bragging about the countess and her house full of treasures eventually gets Jordan, and his eccentric neighbor, into far more trouble than he could imagine. And as he starts to wonder about the so-called curse of the quartz skull, Jordan knows he has to face another test. Will he have the courage, cursed or not, to become the man that Countess von Loewen believes him to be or the loser everyone else sees? Bestselling author Paul Kropp tells an absorbing story that will hook older readers from the first page. In his character Jordan, the popular author of books for teens has found a young Everyman with whom readers can readily identify. And in the countess, Kropp has created a loveable loony no one will soon forget.
