Excellent Account of Science in Action.......2007-03-05
This was probably the first piece of scientific "field-study" literature I've ever read, and i would consider it a must-read for anyone in the biological or environmental fields. Carr does an excellent job of portraying a contrast in cultures and simultaneously gives the reader an incredible understanding of the natural climate of the regions he visits as well. His writing style and content both keep the reader engaged, and years after my first read of it, I find myself coming back to the work to read through various sections from time to time. As a young conservation ecologist, this, along with Aldo Leopold's Sand County Almanac, constitutes my professional bible.
Naturalist's Humor and Wry Observations Save Story.......2004-02-17
I found the Windward Road a rather dull account of the author's search for the green turtle. While I appreciated his folksy humor and wry observations, the book failed to be an absorbing adventure. The turtle he is after doesn't turn up until the last two chapters of the book. In fact, the last two chapters were the most interesting for me. I did enjoy Mr. Carr's interactions with the local natives in his wanderings. They carried the knowledge of where to find turtles in their community. Overall I tired of reading about Carr watching native people dig up turtle eggs from their clutch, Carr witnessing the bludgeoning of captured turtles, going on hunts to harpoon turtles and Carr being served up various turtle delicacies. I realize the book was written 50 years ago and sentiments about animals were very different. To that point, it is probably important to read something like this to understand some early turtle nesting areas and how the turtle sustained a native people.
A delightful book by a wonderful naturalist.......2002-01-05
Archie Carr was the Godfather of modern sea-turtle biology and an outspoken advocate of turtle conservation who did more than anyone else to bring our attention to these creatures. The Windward Road is a masterpiece of Natural History writing, capturing a magical moment in time as Carr delves into the secret lives of the great green turtles and takes us with him on journeys to Caribbean islands as yet largely unspoiled by the wave of development that was to come. Anyone interested in conservation biology or with a love of a good yarn should get hold of this book, sink back and hear the trade winds blow -and then get out of your chair & do something to carry on the struggle that Carr waged for so long to preserve turtles and their habitats. This is a book that you will come back to repeatedly & pass on to friends and students with enthusiasm.

Best day trip guide for the Missoula Floods I've read........2006-03-10
If you have interest in geology, catastrophies, and particularly in the Missoula Floods, this is one of the best books to read.
It provides an overview of the geology and effects of these massive floods of 15,000 years ago, but even more, it provides driving directions, lodging and fuel suggestions, and fantastic day and multi-day trips to view the current day results of the Floods.
I've been to many of the areas covered by the book, and it still pointed out many things I had failed to see and understand.
If you are going to be traveling anywhere in Eastern Washington, the Columbia River Gorge, Northern Idaho, or around Missoula Montana--buy the book. It's a very entertaining read and a wonderful way to open your eyes to what has happened to create the extraordinary formations in the inland Northwest.
Fascinating read for the amateur geologist/hiker.......2003-01-07
Growing up in Oregon's Willamette Valley, basalt cliffs have watched over my life. More flood basalt and Rocky mountain gravels and mud are under my feet, and for most of my life I've lived within the shores of glacial lake Allison. When I go the rugged Pacific coast I look at beautiful haystack rocks and headlands where the same lava streams flowed, or I climb volcanic peaks just inland. Flood-wrenched lavas greet me in my travels up the Columbia and Snake Rivers, through the gorge, coulees and hills and through the valley of the Grande Ronde to overlook the Snake River canyon, over a mile deep. Fossils lie beneath similar formations in John Day country.
Fire, Faults & Floods bring the processes that created this to life. It would be useful and handy enough as a guidebook for traveling to various places and interpreting them with short hikes and drives. However, it goes way beyond this, interesting enough to hold your attention as you turn each page, filling in more and more details and drawing them into a cohesive whole.
If you have money and interest left after this book, for a more historically-oriented story of Harlan Bretz, and additional local details, pick up a companion book "Cataclysms on the Columbia" by Allen, Burns, Sargent, and Sargent.
When Imagination Falters!.......2000-06-04
This book tells of events so implausible that even your imagination will have difficulty comprehending them. If I have any complaint about the book it is that it fails to sufficiently emphasize how amazing it is, for example, that molten lava once upon a time ran nearly 400 miles before coming to its stopping place. The authors seem to almost be afraid that if they point up the apparent absurdity of it all, the reader would decide the whole book was a well written hoax! It was not a hoax, though, and the story of what happened in the Pacific Northwest once upon a time is well told. It is of greatest interest, obviously, to those of us who live here in the midst of the results of fire, fault and flood, but, for those elsewhere with vivid imaginations, it is a cracking good book. This is one time when what actually happened is more exciting than anything one's imgination can possibly conjure up!
Overlooked Beauty.......2000-05-01
I really enjoyed this book. But I may be different that you. I like rocks, massive basalt cliffs, immense coulees, and the beauty of arid lands. These and much more can be found in this wonderful book by Marge and Ted Mueller. If you're excited about these things then this may be a book you'd enjoy also, especially if you live in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. This book is really more than just a basic, easy-to-read geological primer of the Columbia River Basin. It is a trip-planner with detailed instructions on how to go and see the stuff for yourself. I've already been to a couple of the locations and have another short trip planned for this fall. This book is exactly what I hoped it would be when I bought it from Amazon.com. I've never found another book quite like it. Enjoy!

Book Description
Preeminent cycling journalist Samuel Abt's distinctive voice has told the stories of countless champions and decisive turning points in the most famous international races since the late 1970s. In this collection of articles originally published in The New York Times and the International Herald Tribune, Sam profiles three decades of cycling, culminating with the retirement of Lance Armstrong following the 2005 Tour de France. Featuring vivid color photos by Graham Watson, Up the Road immortalizes Lance Armstrong, Greg LeMond, Bobby Julich, Andy Hampsten, and a host of other luminaries.
Customer Reviews:
More from the master.......2006-01-31
If you know Samuel Abt's work, you'll know what to expect from this book: a collection of short but beautiful and insightful essays on European racing, all previously published in the International Herald Tribune. Abt's knowledge of Grand Tour racing is vast and his expatriate (American) perspective is unique. He is the undisputed king of the cycling essay.
This collection spans the period from the arrival of the Anglos (the "Foreign Legion") in the early 1980s to Lance Armstrong's seventh Tour de France win in 2005. Don't expect comprehensive coverage, though: the essays are about this and that and, despite Greg LeMond's name in the subtitle, not many of them are about LeMond. The book is garnished with a few Graham Watson photographs.
Much as I treasure Abt's essays-even having read most of these before-I still yearn for the longer thematic work he could set himself to: a history of the Anglos in the European peleton, maybe, or the LeMond racing biography that's never been written. He chides Richard Virenque for meticulously amassing mountain points and little else; surely he's not going to retire with only the black-and-white jersey for essays.

Awesome Book, But a Few Quirks.......2007-10-05
This book is overall a great book and covers all of the areas that you will ever need in learning Japanese grammar. I am very happy with it, but it may not be for some people, because it has an odd way of presenting the material.
The verbs are given in a long list of five to six pages. In fact, there are many lists of random vocab (no nouns), and you will find most of these at the beginning, so if you do indeed wish to read the book to learn Japanese "step by step" you will have to wade through lots of vocab before you get the real grammar. Otherwise, You will have to find a way to review it and organize the learning process yourself, because this book presents it in such a way that it would be silly to go in order.
There are plenty of examples that illustrate every concept, along with kanji. However, this is another quirk. The use of kanji is not consistent. Kanji only appears in the examples (and the section on kanji) and is relatively non-existent other wise. There are many tables and lists of words that have no kanji at all. This is frustrating, because I find the kanji very helpful when remembering the word, and I have to look most of it up myself.
The portions that are written in romaji use an odd style to inform you of the tones. Capital letters and underlining are supposed to show you how you should increase the pitch, and this will easily through you in to accenting the capital letters instead of raising the pitch which is not terribly important in the first place.
All that said, this is the best book I've found that touches on all of the points you will need to know. I recommend it for those who have studied Japanese before, but are still looking for a concrete method to go by. Beginners should probably read something else first and late intermediate will probably not find this book necessary unless as a reference.
4/5
useful supplement: cheap, relevant, organized.......2007-08-29
I used this book in the very beginning of my Nihongo self study 8 months ago. The 1st pass through the text was difficult --- the kanji gave me nightmares :) So I put it aside and learned 500+ kanji (definitions in English and some readings) then picked this up again from the library and it was a lot more helpful the 2nd time around! It's fairly well organized and if you copy the sentences by hand ... the grammar and kanji do stick. However I didnt like how the romaji was presented (strange capitalization). Ive spent 100s of dollars on Japanese texts from Amazon, Kinokuniya and Cheng Tsui and this is 1 of the better deals out there.
Great for the beginner to intermediate learner.......2007-08-07
Nishi san has done a wonderful job for people that need practial, understandable Japanese lessons. No book can ever be complete as a language learning tool, but this one covers a topic that most miss, the pitch changes that make for different words. Because the book also uses both the kana and kanji, it does not suffer the trap of being a pure romanji based tool. It also covers proper grammar and both formal and informal use of the language. Since strangers speak formally, and news papers and co-workers use more informal structures, it is important to be able to identify and use both.
Between this book, some good flash cards, like the ones by White Rabbit Press, and audio tapes, like the companion ones for the White Rabbit cards, you will be well on your way to mastering the day to day Japanese needed for getting lunch, directions, business meetings, and so on.
Nothing can completely replace formal training in a language. However, this book is one of the tools I strongly recommend to anyone that has a need to be able to study alone. It builds as it goes, and has a very ordered structure of progression.
The only reason I give it 4, rather than 5 stars, is because no book without companion audio can truly teach pronunciation. However, this book comes closer than any other, and since I have over $2500 worth of Japanese self study materials, that is saying something.
Ok, for a second reference.......2007-08-03
As a mostly self-studying student, I use a few text books. Mostly the Japanese for Busy People books. Japanese Step by Step is an excellent companion to the Japanese for Busy People series, as it gives "formulas" and strategies for congugating verbs, adjectives etc, which as a scientist I find very useful. For example, flow charts are used to show how verbs change according to past, present etc. This is much better, IMHO, than some books that just say "Here are some examples, memorise them." If you like to learn processes, rather than examples, this book would be excellent for you.
However, as a self study book, it is near useless. It has no exercises, just several examples for each point.
The language used is concise and to the point, something I greatly appreciate. It is also great at self referencing. For example, if it is discussing a new verb type, and it refers to a previous verb type, it always give the location where the latter was discussed. I have found that a lot of text books expect you to remember everything that you have learnt, which makes looking back over the text tedious. This book avoids that to a large degree.
Overall, a good reference, but you will probably need at least one other text book series (e.g. Minna no Nihongo) to get much benefit out of it.
Amazingly useless.......2007-07-03
When I first received this book, I thought I'd have a better understanding of the Japanese language. The verb chapter to me was a little confusing because he uses arrows instead of being straight to the point (ie like in Spanish verbs). Also, there aren't many Japanese characters throughtout the book. As I am learning a new word, I also like to know the Kanji or know if it's written soley in kana. This was a waste of my money, it's for people that don't know squat about Japanese.

Yowza!.......2005-03-01
The story is about a girl named Nia who feels like an ousider at her all white school. And the only friends she has is a boy named Marcus Garvey Williams. But when he suddenly dissapears, Nia gets in a fist-fight with a student defending his name. Now Nia dosn't no what to do with her life now that she is suspended. Do you think Nia is going to get her life back on track? To find out that question read, "Where Did I Go From Here". I really liked this book because the author really knows how to relate to people and she was really straight forward and didn't hold anything back. Books related to this is "Bud Not Buddy". Because his parents left him when he was a baby and now since he lives with his grandmother he dosn't know what to do with his life eathier just like Nia.
Where do I go From Here?.......2003-11-14
Things at Endicott Academy were never freat but thy wern't exactly horrible, either. Nia didn't really feel comfortable at the academy. She didn't fit. This book is belivably intresting and satisfying! Tis novel by Valerie Wesley is a fun, entertaining...read for the young adult.i think that you should read this book!
A great interesting , realistic novel for book lovers!.......1999-10-26
Imagine having to leave your home and go off to a school where there are not many of your kind. Nia had to go through that. The novel, Where Do I Go From Here?, by Valerie Wilson Wesley, is about a black girl who had to leave and go to a highschool where she feels like an outsider. Nia wasn't nich nor was she white like many other people at her school. Nia found a friend, Marcus Garvey Willians, who was like her. Even though Marcus is black he has found a way to fit in and still be himself.
I give is novel five stars because it is interesting and realistic. As one of the characters, Nia has to be the most exciting. Nia wasn't interesring because she was blowing up someone's house or anything. The story was just as exciting as an action packed book, but in a different way. Nia was interesting because of the kind of person she was. At the end Marcus helped Nia realize the importance of her life, and also gain a new respect for it.

I have a son about to graduate from High School. I saw this book in the book store and glanced through it and liked what I read. It tells them exactly the correct process to use to make the right choices. I recommend this book especially for people who do not really like to read much. It gets to the point and is a very easy read.
