An interesting piece of history of the development of earlier American hymnology. Also interesting is, some of the wording is funny.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant piece of American musical history.......2002-04-15

Southern Harmony is probably the most popular hymnbook in history, having gone through editions in 1835, 1847, and 1854 as well as reprints in 1939, 1966, 1987, and 1993. After 1835, William Walker, its compiler, signed his name "William Walker, ASH"-- that is, Author of Southern Harmony. He was rightly proud of his achievement. The book includes the best of early-nineteenth-century American hymns, including many written by Walker himself. It was an influential source for many subsequent hymnals.

Southern Harmony is a shape-note hymnal, in which different notes have different shapes, enabling easy transposition between keys. The sopranos sing descants; the melodies are in the tenor voice.

And what melodies! The tunes (and lyrics) of this book will stun you with their plain-spoken power and beauty. Some (Amazing Grace, Rock of Ages) are familiar; some (Resignation --"My Shepherd Will Supply My Need"-- and Wondrous Love) are becoming better known; others have been arranged by contemporary musicians such as Alice Parker and Mack Wilberg. Many dozens of others are gems waiting to be mined.

The melodies in this book tend to display their Gaelic origins. Most are based on a pentatonic scale. Many are in minor keys, and many more are modal (especially Dorian, Phrygian, and Mixolydian). Harmonies are primitive but forceful.

This is an important part of our musical heritage. Anyone interested in church music will find Southern Harmony an inspiring collection that amply rewards hours of study.

Designed for people who use walking as their main form of exercise, "The Essential Walker's Journal" has several parts. The first part explains how to use the journal. The second part asks users to write down their dreams. Next is a space to write down statistics such as weight, dress size, and cholesterol so that users can compare their stats before and after they start their exercise program. Next is a brief section on exercise, fitness, and nutrition. The next section is the journal itself, which is the largest section in the book. The journal is based on a four-month exercise program and there is a page for each day of the week, except for Sunday. Each page is full of useful information to be filled out, such as what you eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, how far you walked, how much water you drank, and how many hours you slept. There is also a section titled "A Beautiful Thing" where users can write something good that happened during the day and a space at the end titled "Notes" where users can write down anything they want. At the end of each month there is a progress report section. At the end of the book is a section titled "Four Month Wrap-Up" with a series of questions designed to help users realize how far they've come in their exercise program and help them plan future exercise programs. Interspersed throughout the book are several testimonials from people that have lost weight and improved their health through Leslie Sansone's walking programs.

For the most part "The Essential Walker's Journal" was pretty useful. I like being able to track what I eat and drink each day, although there's not enough space to write it all down. It would be nice if I could keep track of how many calories I consume each day. Although the journal entries are dated Monday through Saturday, I ignore that and just put the date down. Since the journal is geared towards walkers, there's a section titled "Today's Walk" where you are supposed to right down how long you walked, but if I do some other type of exercise I make note of that in the space instead. Each day there is some tidbit at the top of the page: quotations, thoughts, diet information, that was fun to read. I also enjoyed the various profiles of people who lost weight through walking.

Leslie Sansone fans (and fans of walking in general) should find this journal to be helpful although they may need to make some modifications.

3 out of 5 stars Good, and with just a little tweaking could be even better.......2006-04-07

I think keeping a log of your daily exercise & food intake can be very beneficial; putting it all down on paper and reviewing it periodically motivates me to stay the course in my goal of leading a healthier lifestyle and also lets me see what areas I need to work on improving. However, this book really needs bigger spaces to write in, especially the meals sections, which seem tiny and cramped. I'd also prefer it if it was set up to check off your daily intake of fruits, vegetables, multi-grains, etc the way it is to monitor water consumption. I do enjoy the inspiring daily "words to live by", and as a cancer survivor who finds something positive in each new day, I really like the space to write in "a beautiful thing" everyday.

1 out of 5 stars Disgusting ripoff.......2006-11-21

Do you guys know that this book sells in Europe for about 70 bucks? That's HALF its price in the US and about the right price it should have. Then why does it sell for twice as much in the US? Because of the "cooperation" between publishing companies and colleg professors who force thier college students to spend unbelievable sums to get textbooks. I understand (but don't justify) the greedy publishing companies behavious, but why do college professors allow these crooks to go on with this business?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent to get the primer.......2006-07-05

Excellent if you are new to physics and need a straight forward text. The exercises will get to the point and are easy to follow. The shipments were fast and the condition of the book was good.

5 out of 5 stars Honors problem anyone?.......2006-05-06

This book is straight to the point. I mean this book would give you the most important concepts in Physics. The good thing about this book is that the exercises and problems are REALLY challenging. It would require you an absolute understanding of the concepts and great mathematical skills. If you don't have the solutions manual. From what I know the exercises and problems given in a Physics Olympiad is based from this book. Some of the question. So if you want to sharpen your skills in Physics I suggest this book.

5 out of 5 stars Still alive and well.......2006-03-28

More than thirty years ago, when I was an engineering student, my physics "Bible" was Halliday & Resnick, Physics for Students of Science and Engineering, 1st Edition. This is a book that has aged gracefully. While the basic physics concepts were retained, the examples have been updated in each revision to keep up with the technology advances. Now in its seventh edition since Walker started to collaborate with the previous authors, it is still one of the most enjoyable readings in elementary physics. I recommend it without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars Fine successors to Calvin Rutstrum.......2007-03-22

I happened across this book while looking for a Calvin Rutstrum book. I am a fan of old Cal's, particularly the great Paradise Below Zero, and read that it was cited in Snow Walker's Companion. I had also just purchased a large wall tent with a wood stove, and had been on a "shakedown" winter campout/Nordic ski trip, and have become quite interested in that type of winter camping. More the "old trapper" style of winter doings than the high-tech ski backpacking type.
This book fills that bill to a T, and to boot it truly carries on the Rutstrum tradition magnificently. Rutstrum had a lot of practical "northwoods" material, but he was shy on detail sometimes, and there is some stuff in his books outdated even for the modern "throwback".
This book is chock full of detail, along with fine narrative. It actually tells you how do most things you will need to do. And it is terrific to find a contemporary book that isn't afraid of the axe, fire, and gun; one that shows that you can be a great lover of the wilderness, our priceless environment, and a hunter, too. They put it very gently so as not to scare anybody off!

5 out of 5 stars Valuable old-school information.......2007-02-09

This book teaches real techniques based on native practices. No fancy technology or yuppie gear, just how to be comfortable in places most people fear to go.

This book is also footnoted and referenced in many other winter camping books, always with much respect.

5 out of 5 stars 3rd time; Best of the Best!.......2005-12-15

The new "Snow Walker's Companion" is the third version of Garrett and Alexandra Conover's "Winter Wilderness Companion (2001) and "A Snow Walker's Companion" (1996) and although much of the material is the same, Garrett told me in an interview that it was time for a revised text. In the five years since they wrote the "Wilderness" book there have been a number of significant changes in things like portable stoves (now can be bought made of titanium), GPS navigation and some other skills and gear; Suppliers have gone out of business and new ones have come into the marketplace, and some equipment and clothing that was not available commercially, is now. Stone Ridge Press, the new publisher, has added a new section of color photos and the journal of the first major trip that the Conovers made on snowshoes, towing their supplies on native sleds. All through, the book remains highly readable, enjoyable and thought-provoking. I felt the size of the "Wilderness Companion" was better for carrying in a pack, but that little quibble aside, the new edition is one of the very best winter camping books out there.

Book Description

Stories that address the grieving process of humans and animals who have lost their companions and that give advice on how best to help yourself and others recover

• Gives practical advice on recovery, including self-care, support systems, and homeopathic recipes, and also discusses the painful topic of euthanasia

• The first book to address the topic of animal grief at the loss of a companion, explaining how to recognize grief in animals and how to help them heal

Anyone who has lost a treasured animal companion knows that this can be as devastating as losing a human loved one. Unfortunately, our society's sympathy with this loss is not commensurate with the actual grief people feel. Kaetheryn Walker fills this void by presenting true stories of the grief process she and others went through after the death of their animal companions. She gives practical advice on recovery, including daily self-care, support systems, and homeopathic remedies, and discusses the painful topic of euthanasia as well. Her book is also the first to address the important topic of animal grief at the loss of a companion. She explains how to recognize grief in animals and how to help them heal.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great reference for helping animals.......2006-05-04

I actually lost my copy of this book, and I've added it to my wish list so I can replace it. The book is written in anecdotal format; the author uses case studies from her practice to demonstrate how particular remedies are used in particular cases of grief/shock. You don't have to be a Ph.D. or a hugely experienced homeopath to use this book.

Over the years I have used recommendation from this book to help animals recover from the death of their owners and abandonment in shelters. My most recent rescue--a cat who had been surrendered to a shelter when his former owner became too sick to take care of him, almost died while in the shelter (from illness and a broken heart), found a home and then was kicked back to the shelter due to behavior issues, and finally moved into my house, where he lives happily and peacefully with my two older cats--benefited profoundly from the advice given in this book. Only yesterday I was able to use information I remembered from this book to help a baby goat whose mother orphaned him.

If you are looking for a book to help YOU recover from pet loss, this book isn't for you. There are numerous books on the market to help humans recover from pet loss. This book is designed for you to help your animal companion cope with his or her grief and emotional turmoil after losing a beloved human or animal friend.

One word of caution: The author (and I) believe that animals have souls and feelings--NOT that animals are people in fur suits, but that animals have feelings which they manifest in their own way unique to their species. If this approach to animal welfare is too "woo woo" for you, you may want to give this book a miss. But if you are interested in homeopathy and you sense that your animal is depressed or otherwise traumatized by a loss, this book will be a great reference tool. Shelter workers and animal "foster carers" could benefit from this book, too.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful and pactical.......2002-02-02

I am a volunteer foster mom for kittens and cats, having had about 200 animals adopted.I deal with animal loss-I have to deal with cats I raised in my home and personally feel the loss and adopters who call me in tears and are very distresses. I recommend this book-probably because it doesn't have poetry and stories that move readers to tears, I find people can read that their feelings of loss are very valid and extremely personal-and it helps. I am not a professional but I am asked for help when an animal is ill or passed away and this book is short enough that readers will stay with it. The homeopathic part of this book is not for everyone-probably only a small portion of animal owners. But I followed some suggestions and as they say "It can't hurt to try!"

2 out of 5 stars This book is a homeopathic materia medica for animals.......2000-11-10

I think potential buyers of this book should not be deceived by the title into thinking that it is a guide to healing from pet loss, as I was. The author is a fervent, not to say fanatic, veterinary homeopath. What starts out as personal anecdotes about euthanizing or losing beloved pets turns into anecdotes about rescuing traumatized animals (surely a laudable thing) and healing them with things like Natrum muriaticum (chloride of sodium)and Borax (borate of sodium). As a pet lover myself, I'm the last to point a finger at someone who anthropomorphizes animals, but I do start wondering when animal emotions are supposedly "understood" by a human to such a fine degree - is it really possible to distinguish "rage in general" vs. rage from being left alone" vs. "rage at having the throat touched", and that each of these different rages can be cured by a different herb? Perhaps it is possible, and since the author believes in long-distance telepathic communication with animals, perhaps she knows something that I don't. The communication I have experienced from animals has truly been deeper than anything I was ever taught could be possible - but I wonder if layering on too much human emotion spoils the purity, the difference of relating to an animal rather than another human. The book makes several good, though not original points; that giving our pets a peaceful end to suffering requires great courage of the heart, that animals do suffer emotional trauma and do grieve the loss of human or other animal companions. The human-animal bond is indeed a very special, very important bond to forge - the capacity to love another outside oneself is paramount to being a good human being. Becoming the "ambassador" for an animal requires commitment, watchfulness and care; what our companion animals give us in return is beyond measure. Had I been interested in learning homeopathic veterinary medicine, I would have purchased this author's other book "Homeopathic First Aid for Animals". If you are looking for a book to help you deal with grief at losing a beloved (pet of any type, parent, a love), buy "My Cat Saved My Life" by Philip Schreibman. It will help you much more.
AFTERWORD: (9/5/01) It is now almost a year since I lost my beloved 17-year-old cat, Hugo. I felt moved to add a few words to what I wrote about this book in 11/00. I want to clarify that I believe with all my being that our companion animals DO indeed understand us when we talk to them and and touch them and can even read our moods. (Read Anthony Gugielmo's book, "The Walrus on My Table"). And I hope with all my heart that telepathic communication between animals and humans and healing with homeopathic remedies occur. But I bought this book based on the title, which is such a comforting statement when you are grieving a loss..."the heart that is loved never forgets". It would have been the perfect title for the books "Angel Paws" and "Angel Whiskers", both books that deal with coping with the grief over losing a companion animal better than the above volume. I hold no quarrel with this this book, nor this author's point of view. I just wanted others in my situation to know that better solace for sorrow could be found elsewhere. I have moved on to rescue two other cats since I lost Hugo; a 10-year-old cat whose owner had to enter a nursing home and could not take his cat and a starving kitten from my driveway. I say this not to glorify myself, but to make the point that, no matter how much I love my other feline companions, the hole in my heart left by my bright spirit, Hugo's, absence will never be filled as long as I am alive. I know that I will meet him again, when, as they say, I go over the "Rainbow Bridge" myself. I also want to tell seniors and their relatives/dear ones something very important - the animal shelter community has changed. If you are lonely for an animal companion, but are resisting because you worry about whether you will "be around"...stop hesitating! There are MANY animals out there who would be so happy to share your life, no matter for how long! I never in the world thought I would adopt a 10-year-old cat (I am turning 50 this year); but I did and it was a revelation. Even if one or both of you has only a few years left, don't they deserve to be happy ones?, full of love? There are so many sad animal stories around, but we should realize that things ARE getting better, that some people DO care, and that love can be just around the corner, for today, for tomorrow, for who knows how long? And there will be others to pick up the torch and carry the love forward. God Blesses All Creatures, if one can but see.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2004-05-06

I remember stumbling onto this book while walking through Barnes and Noble, and I immediately got it. It is the coolest book ever in regards to Doctor Who, all sorts of information and tidbits that most people never knew is included along with various other details and analyses about the adventures that have been shown during the show's long history on television.

if you are a fan of Doctor, get this book. you'll love it. it may even help inspire you to write your own reviews for some of your favorite and not so favorite Doctor Who adventures.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Doctor Who episode guide.......2003-12-17

If you're looking for a 'Doctor Who' episode guide, then you can stop looking as this is by far the best book you can buy about the television series. It's a revised and updated version of the book that was previously released as an official volume from BBC Books some years ago. It contains a synopsis of each story as well as interesting behind-the-scenes details and viewer/fan reaction and opinion. The latter is my favourite part as I find episode guides that steer clear of including opinions of stories to be as dry and boring as dust.

This updated volume also covers appearances of the Doctor and friends on television outside of the series proper, including the K-9 spin-off pilot 'K-9 And Company' and charity specials such as the very entertaining 'The Curse Of Fatal Death' which starred Rowan Atkinson, Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Joanna Lumley as the Doctor. The coverage for these stories isn't as in-depth as the television series, but it's good to see them featured in this book.

This is an essential purchase for any Doctor Who fan. For coverage of the spin-off books and audio stories, you can also find Lars Pearson's 'I, Who' series elsewhere on Amazon.

Alice Walker, born in Eatonton, Georgia in 1944, overcame a disadvantaged sharecropping background, blindness in one eye, and the tense times of the Civil Rights Movement to become one of the world's most respected African American writers. While attending both Spelman and Sarah Lawrence Colleges, Walker began to draw on both her personal tragedies and those of her community to write poetry, essays, short stories, and novels that would tell the virtually untold stories of oppressed African and African American women, providing them with hope and inspiring activisim. Perhaps best known for her novel The Color Purple (1982), which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1983 and became a controversial film three years later, Walker has introduced and developed womanist theory, criticism and practice, and continues to champion the causes of women of color by encouraging their strength and liberation in her life and her writings. Literary works analyzed in this volume: The Third Life of Grange Copeland, Meridian, The Color Purple, The Temple of My Familiar, Possessing the Secret of Joy, By the Light of My Father's Smile, The Way Forward Is With a Broken Heart, Now is the Time to Open Your Heart.

    Book Description

In these last wildlands of North America, the nomadic, indigenous people have perfected ways of living and traveling in winter using elegant and sophisticated snowshoes, toboggans, and sleds that make it possible for trekkers to carry heavy weights-wood stoves, wall tents, and real food-with far less effort than with the ultralight backpacking equipment more often associated with the winter camper. This important book brings the skills and philosophy of the snow walkers of the north woods to a new generation of outdoorspeople, and shows today's wilderness traveler how to adopt these Native American techniques and enjoy winter in a comfort nothing short of extraordinary.

4 out of 5 stars New Book Coming!.......2005-11-02

The newest edition of the book previously published as "A Snow Walker's Companion" and "The Winter Wilderness Companion" is hot off the presses and made it's sales debut at the 6th Annual Traditional Winter Camping Symposium near Eau Claire, WI this past weekend.

"Snow Walker's Companion" by Garrett and Alexandra Conover, published by Stone Ridge Press, will be available on Amazon and other outlets in time for Christmas/Chanukah shopping. The book now includes a color photo section and updated information on equipment sources as well as titanium stoves, GPS and sat-phone use and other improvements since the 2001 edition.

3 out of 5 stars A confused blend of information, insight and polemic.......1999-04-19

Garrett and Alexendra Conovers' "A Snow Walker's Companion" is an interesting compilation of information about living in far northern climates. It works best as a historical record of the traditions, techniques, and lore of Inuit and Cree peoples that enable them to live simply and comfortably in harsh climes. To that end, it is a reverent and important book. The book's weakness is the implicit message that the cold-dwelling hand crafters of wooden snowshoes are morally superior to the poor urban dweller trying to live a balanced life by juggling work and children with occasional forays into the woods or up the mountains, on aluminum Sherpas, clothed in fleece and Gortex. The Conovers, who live in a walled tent in Maine and are respected wilderness guides, seem not to understand that their chosen lifestyle is possible only because most choose not to live it. For readers who are truly considering a move to or extended travel in far northern territories, "A Snowwalker's Companion" is unique and indispensible. Most winter adventurers, though, must satisfy their love of the outdoors with day mountain hikes or backpacks of several days duration. For them, a book such as "Winterwise, A Backpacker's Guide," by John M. Dunn, or any cold weather book by the Appalachian Mountain Club, New Hampshire, is apt to be more useful and far less grating.

5 out of 5 stars A superb book on winter travel in the bush.......1999-01-29

This book is first-class! It has the attention to detail that only the Conovers, both Maine Guides, could bring to it.

It covers snowshoes, bindings, moccasins, boots, toboggans, tents, stoves, food, clothes, and travel by snowmobile. There is even an excellent discussion on the psychology of winter camping.

The emphasis is on winter traveling the way Native Americans have done and are still doing it -- in a safe and comfortable way.

The sources of equipment and further information at the end of each chapter are very valuable.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in winter wilderness travel and camping or in the material culture of the Native Americans of the Sub-Arctic boreal areas.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Outdoor books of our generation........1998-12-13

I cannot snowshoe very often in Tennessee (hah ha) but this book makes me wish I could. I had read Garrett's Beyond the Paddle and loved it so I got this book and was blown away. I would reccomend it to anyone who likes to camp-out in woodland areas in the winter. Every view in this book is perceptive, inciteful and entertaining. Do not pass this one up. It ranks up there with the works of Bill Mason, Cache Lake Country and works by Calvin Rustrum.

5 out of 5 stars Not merely incredibly informative, but beautifully written........1998-10-16

Others have rightly focused on the contents of this gem. In addition, this book is a great "read." On top of that, there are photos that will show you such stunning things as the sheer beauty of Native American designs woven into the babitch "fillings" of snowshoes. To top it off, you get patterns for making your own cotton anorak shell! Just a great book, up there with Cache Lake Country [out of print] and True North [out of print]. Get this one before this masterpiece too goes "out of print" in a country whose publishers allow such tragedies to happen.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2001-02-03

This has good solutions to the problems, usually of varied type and usually very helpful. The only problem is that on average about 5 or 6 problems are worked out per chapter and it would be nice to have more.

3 out of 5 stars This is a decent companion........2001-02-03

This book has reviews of the concepts in chapter, mathematical help and some guide to solving some of the problems in each chapter. If you think you are not really understanding the material, this book is somewhat useful. It might be more useful to get help from a tutor or a t.a. The student solution guide that wiley also offers was more helpful for me in understanding how to do a lot of the problems.

5 out of 5 stars It is just the best Physics book ever........1998-12-27

It is simple and objective. It's a book where the reader dosen't need a professor to learn physics. Good ilustrations and great examples of how physics can be usefull in our lives.
