Practice Lessons.......2007-08-27
This is a great book if you are taking lessons from an instructor and you want additional things to practice. Beginners may not find it as helpful as they were hoping.

Customer Reviews:
Dificil man!!.......2007-10-01
This book is alright, but buyers take note...this is NOT a book for beginners. It's got some really tricky stuff in here with verbs etc. Good review for the 2nd year student maybe?
SayHola dot com has used this book...........2007-09-24
Our online course at SayHola dot com teaches you how to speak the Spanish Language but this book is a great tool for practicing and building Vocabulary. We recommend it.
Agreed. Better with Behind the Wheel Spanish.......2007-08-14
The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice is excellent, but not at all complete. The dialogs are helpful, but I found that they lack spontaneity, creativity, and it is sometimes difficult to maintain a high level of interest because of the somewhat stale presenatation.
Still, the Book and CD Rom are very good, thus the four star rating.
One note: I would highly recommend you take Amazon's advice and use this along with Behind the Wheel Spanish 8 CDs and Text. This course is a real powerhouse of authentic spoken Spanish and will teach you to use everything you learn in Ultimate Spanish Review in the real world.Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour
Great grammar book.......2007-07-17
This is one book that no Spanish student should be without. It's a great book to have for learning grammar or even to keep as a reference.
Fantastic Product! The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice with CD-ROM.......2007-07-15
Just about one year ago I wrote a review of The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs with CD-ROM (see my review, July 26, 2006). I was a long-time user of The Big Red reference and when it came out with an interactive CD-ROM I had to let everyone know how fantastic it was!
Well, here I am again this time letting people know that The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, another incredible book that I've been using successfully for six years, is now accompanied by a user-friendly, easy to navigate interactive CD-ROM. The CD-ROM has hundreds of new, varied, and challenging exercises that allow me to practice all the grammar points in the book. What's great is that if I'm in doubt about an answer or grammatical topic I can check the reference to the chapter in the book. The Diagnostic and Review Tests are excellent gauges of what I know and need to brush up on.
I'm really excited by the listening comprehension program. Each Audio Module consists of a dialogue or narration spoken by native Spanish speakers. The Ten Key Words and Expressions are a great introduction to the passages. I listen to them and repeat them after the speaker. Hearing them first and knowing what to listen for make understanding the passage easier. The passage has neat pop-up definitions for highlighted words and if I don't know any word or expression I can activate the Glossary.
I love the audio passages I've worked through so far and I'm amazed how much useful everyday Spanish I've added to my vocabulary. It really helps to listen to Spanish speakers in real situations. I'm a marketing director and often have to speak Spanish with our Latin American clients. "Una conversación telefónica" has proved enormously helpful to me.
The characters are so real, I feel I get to know them. Some scenarios remind me of my own experiences with my husband and children buying and fixing up our house, or talking about a wedding and relationships with my friends, or going through security at the airport in Madrid.
I'm having a fun time learning and practicing Spanish and feeling much more confident using the language in all kinds of situations thanks to The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice with CD-ROM.

Customer Reviews:
Great review book. .......2007-06-14
This book is better than most at explaining the complex rules of Spanish, but also some of the interesting background behind the rules. Not for beginners, but definitely a great book for year 2 Spanish learners.
The Ultimate brand is the gold standard of language teaching books!.......2006-03-21
I have been using The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice: Mastering Spanish Grammar for Confident Communication as a review and reference book. It has seen me through Spanish language exams, travel to Spanish-speaking countries, business meetings where I had to speak Spanish, and even social situations. I read Spanish language newspapers and magazines and even some history and literature and watch Mexican telenovelas with a high level of comprehension.
I've been seeking a good follow-up review text and at last I found it: The Ultimate SPANISH VERB Review and Practice: Mastering Verbs and Sentence Building for Confident Communication. This amazing book is taking me through verb forms in all the tenses. The explanations are crystal clear and there are loads of exercises for practice. I love the Building Sentences section in each chapter because from the simple conjugated verb I learn how to build sentences by adding the verb + infinitive construction, or create sentences with double object pronouns; I learn how to express probability, how to focus on a certain element in the sentence, etc. I can say all the things I've wanted to say about "if something happens" or "if something were to happen" or "if something had happened" (possible conditions or contrary-to-fact conditions).
I like the presentation of Spanish grammar contrasted with English grammar. I'm a native English speaker but never really thought about English grammar until I used The Ultimate books. I find this very helpful, and I'm learning a lot about English, too!
Spanish has a lot of tenses and a lot of irregular verbs. The Ultimate SPANISH VERB Review and Practice is helping me to learn and practice them in context. I really like that the book allows me to go out of order which means if I need more practice on the present subjunctive (which I do!), I can jump right to Chapter 11. This book makes learning Spanish so logical and even enjoyable.
I think the Language Boxes are great because I'm learning interesting facts about Spanish. I didn't know that about 4,000 Spanish words, such as ojalá, el café, el alcohol, and hasta, were borrowed from Arabic. I am also learning many words that Spanish borrows from English to describe computer terms, such as crashear, linkear, and cliquear.
The Ultimate SPANISH VERB Review and Practice is the gold standard of language teaching books.
Another great Gordon-Stillman Spanish language learning tool.......2006-01-20
I want to be the first to review this extraordinary book as I am already a happy (and frequent) user of The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice: Mastering Spanish Grammar for Confident Communication, a book by the same authors Gordon and Stillman that made it possible for me to learn Spanish to speak, read and write for business. I reviewed that book 12-26-99, "Spanish Learning Made Easy". I am now using The Ultimate Spanish Verb Review and Practice: Mastering Verbs and Sentence Building for Confident Communication to further my study of Spanish. I find the book particularly helpful for many reasons. First, the comprehensive number of verbs and the organization of verb lists in structural and semantic groupings provides an easy way to expand my vocabulary and a good reference tool. Second, the grammar explanations of verbs and tenses are extremely clear. Third, each of the 15 chapters presents one or more tenses or type of verb, followed by a section called Building Sentences in which the verbs and tenses studied are expanded into meaningful sentences. Fourth, the book has loads of exercises of all types, and much useful current vocabulary, such as computer and technology verbs. Fifth, I like the language boxes that give interesting information about the Spanish language. Sixth, because the chapters can be used in any order, I can personalize my Spanish language education and focus on key areas for me in a quick and efficient manner. Seventh, the book is so well-organized and user-friendly that I can work through a tense or irregular verb on a short flight. This smart and unique book was written for advanced beginning through advanced learners of Spanish, and I have already recommended it to friends and business associates who are at different levels. The authors' method really works for me as I am confidently and successfully using Spanish in my professional and personal lives.

Customer Reviews:
Superb Grammar Drill - Very Effective Product.......2007-03-19
Seeing some of the negative reviews of this product have prompted me to post this, as I could not disagree more. Of all the audio products I have used (and I have tried about six of them) this little set taught me more Spanish than the others combined. Moreover, its Spanish speakers are by far the best I have heard in all of these products. The only drawback is that there is no sequel I can use to continue the experience.
Yes, the sound quality is uneven and not quite up to the high expectations of some, and the instructions somewhat formal. So, if high quality sound is important to you, or if you hate grammar, don't bother with this product. However, if you want to learn some Spanish sentence structure and grammar, and enjoy the sound of beautifully spoken Spanish, this set is for you. The speakers are clear, their intonation is pleasant, and each brings out the nuance of the language in a unique way. The male speaker in particular is a delight to listen to. This is in marked contrast to the voices of the speakers in many other products.
an effort to listen.......2006-09-26
This might have been a good CD set. At least the corresponding book is good, as far as I can tell. But the sound on the CD's is such that I have trouble recognizing familar Spanish words. Unfamilar words are beyond my hope for recognition. Listening has the general effect of trying to read words printed in runny ink. Oddly, the English-speaking announcer is relatively clear. It is possible that this recording was done on very old equipment. It is also possible that a sound engineer turned the bass way up and the treble way down, thus masking the features of speech which might have made it understandable. I believe this is the case since the woman speaker's voice seems to have more bass boom than the man's. Most regrettable. On the good side, there is a minimum of the annoying musical "bookends" which I sometimes find on similar productions. But since the language content is useless to me, that's a very weak plus. If you have fairly sophisticated sound-shaping, like a graphic equalizer, or if you have a CD player which produces no bass notes to speak of, then this package might be more useable to you than to me.
Definitely Not Worth the Price -- Even if They Slashed the Price in Half .......2006-09-06
As the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews) site, one of my responsibilities is to review learning-Spanish resources. I am also a native Spanish speaker from Argentina, and a professional private Spanish instructor.
You'll certainly want to avoid purchasing this CD product. I have reviewed dozens of products for learning Spanish. This one is among the worst. Strangely, the absolute best Spanish grammar book (and by far the most comprehensive Spanish grammar book) that I have ever reviewed is the Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice. Same name and same company (McGraw-Hill.) In reviewing that book I only wish that Amazon would have had a rating scale that would have allowed me to give more than 5 stars to a product. On the other hand, this set of CD sucks. Excuse my English.
First of all, the audio is barely capable of being heard.
I have done voiceover work as a native Spanish speaker on recordings for learning Spanish lessons. I immediately recognized that the recording of the Spanish on these CDs is not a recording done with contemporary recording equipment. Today, even if someone had recorded the same lessons at home on their computer using amateur recording equipment the lessons would have sounded a lot better than these. It was apparent to me that these Spanish lessons were recorded decades ago. In fact, there is one of two English narrators on the CDs that was apparently recorded in a professional and modern recording studio. The only explanation for recording one of the English narrators in a professional recording studios but not the other narrator and not the Spanish speakers is because the Spanish portion of the audio was recorded decades ago. If this was a small publisher that made this set of CDs, that would explain the inferiority of this product. But there is absolutely no excuse for a publisher the size of McGraw-Hill to make such a poor product.
The awful audio is not the only problem. The lessons were difficult to follow. There is little if any time to respond before the native speakers on the recording say the correct answer. Although I cannot say enough great things about the Spanish grammar book with the same title(The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice), I cannot say enough bad things about this set of CDs.
Combination with its textbook, OK.......2006-02-11
One star minus for the level of the materials covered in these CDs: they are rather lower. Another star minus for its monotonous exercises.
There are two approximately 45-minute CDs in the package and the transcript. In the audio recordings, you will here a lot of grammar exercises, but there isn't, as far as I know, any grammatical explanations. So, I found it would be a good idea to use these CDs combination with the book, which is sold separately. Maybe it's a good idea to read the chapter in the book, do all written exercises, learn vocabulary, and then listen to the corresponding section of the CD as to practice speaking and listening. This is definitely not suitable for learning-while-driving purpose because to do these exercises, you will need to concentrate and think carefully. It is hard to do while you are driving, especially if you are driving in a busy traffic or unfamiliar places. Driving also does not always make you feel calm and at peace.
The level of this material is rather lower than it claims (probably for intermediate-biginners to advanced-biginners; appropriate for 2nd year college students so that they can review what they have learnt in their first year Spanish). If this material is for brushing up one's Spanish, it could have started with a much higher level of reviewing exercises.
But the most crucial point is that all exercises are quite monotonous. The format of the exercises are something like "Change the subjects in the sentences you hear into the plural forms: 1, Me interesa este libro..." or "Change the sentences you hear into passive forms..." etc. When I am doing all these exercises, I feel like I am just doing grammar exercises (for exams like TOEFL or something like that), and I don't feel like I am learning a language, which is a kind of living animal that human beings have created to communicate with others.
The good thing is , though, that this material does allow you to practice key grammatical points in the language orally. Just like practicing singing songs or playing a musical instrument, I believe that one needs to move his/her own mouth upon practicing speaking foreign languages. We probably would never become a good singer or musician if we just keep staring at musical notes and learning musical theory, I guess. (Image training is a little different story.)
The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice book and CDs a winning combo.......2006-01-20
KH, Graduate Student (Philadelphia)
I had been using the terrific book The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice: Mastering Spanish Grammar for Confident Communication to brush up on my Spanish when the The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice, CD Edition came on the market. I made great progress studying Spanish grammar and practicing it in the exercises in the book, but with the supplementary audio exercises on the two CDs I was also able to practice my skills of understanding and speaking. I like the format of the interactive audio exercises and greatly appreciate the English explanations and model sentences. Unlike other audio programs I've tried, this one gives me plenty of time to respond before the correct answer is heard. I like to do the audio drills without looking at the listening guide, but it's reassuring to know that if I don't understand something I hear I can look it up. The dictations are very helpful to me too.
The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice book and CDs are easy to use together because the book and audio listening guide are coordinated so that chapter and page numbers match up. I know my skills have improved using them, and I feel much more confident about using Spanish in the workplace, with my friends, and when I travel.
