Book Description
This new edition of Eduardo Galeano's riveting commentary on the history and politics of soccer includes newly written material on the 2002 World Cup, which one quarter of humanity watched. Discussing everything from the leveling of the Twin Towers to the death of the sole survivor of that extraordinary match between British and German soldiers in 1915, one of South America's greatest commentators issues forth on robotic soccer in Japan, the mass-production of the game as a sign of the decline of civilization, the amazing success of Senegal and Turkey, and how Nike beat Adidas.
Customer Reviews:
One of my all-time favorite books.......2007-09-01
I liked the my old paperback edition so much, I bought a hardbound version of the new edition. (The new material BTW is just a continuation of Galeano's commentaries this time centered on the 2002 World Cup tournament. Older version just went up to the 1998 tournament.)
Any discussion of Galeano's writing must begin with his inimitable style. For lack of a proper genre, I call his writings "mosaicos", as each little vignette is like an individual tile in a larger, greater picture. Sometimes this format can be a bit disjointed, but in "Soccer Sun Shadow", it works because the Reader understands that the vignettes are organized chronologically. Galeano does have some vignettes about the origins of the game and its spread to the far-flung corners of the world by British imperialists, but by and large the narrative begins with accounts of games/goals/players from the early 1950s. Since Galeano is Uruguayan, he also has a decidedly Latin American bias (so don't expect to be reading about European teams of the era).
I'm 42 years old and a fan of soccer; some of the stories/players mentioned I had never heard of, so it was refreshing to hear a bit of this history. Once Galeano's narrative caught up to my earliest memories of the game (1970/1974 World Cups), I felt like I was talking to an old friend about a subject we both love. I think that's why I like this book so much: it blends my love of literature (I'm an English teacher) with my love of soccer, and it does it so poetically, so precisely, with such quick turns of language, it is a distinct pleasure to read and reminisce.
I'm not saying you should buy two copies of "Soccer Sun Shadow" (like I did), but if you buy one, I'm sure you'll enjoy the read.
My favorite book about soccer.......2007-08-08
This is a beatifully written little book about the world's greatest game. When I come across people who just can't udnerstand why soccer is the favorite sport (in all countries but the US) I give them this book to read.
It is actually a series of elegant little essays -- (it doesn't neccesarily need to be read in order).
Fine writing with or without a game.......2007-01-06
There are few books of non-fiction whose writing transcends the subject matter, but this is such a book. I am not a soccer player but this book made me a fan of the game and a fan of Galeano. He puts us on a field, in the stands, at the goal, in the sun, and under the shadows. He transports us into the game and celebrates its mystique and passion and sadness. And, amazingly, he does it in as few words as possible, giving us just a few paragraphs at a time but creating huge panoramas of emotion with those words. I'll tell you how much I love this book: it sits on my night stand, ready for me to read a paragraph or two and be transported by a magical game and a writer of similar power.
Soccer: game, passion, art.......2006-06-07
This book by Eduardo Galeano wants to show much about the experience of soccer, an international phenomenon of the masses that is fabulous business and demanding sport, but above all, a game with the potential of poetry. In ancient times, 'poiesis' (Greek word) had some power over the ear and thus over the feeling and thought of peoples, back when the written word was in its infancy. 'Poiesis' was life therapy. Nowadays not all of us appreciate poetry, and we moderns certainly do not have that ancient sense of 'poiesis' as "creation"; for us poetry is more or less pretty words, written, barely experienced and poorly recited. Something like that happens with soccer. When Galeano writes in the Introduction, "a pretty move for the love of God," he encapsulates everything he tries to express in this book of the passion for soccer, and invites us to share this yearning reading the histories and legends he documents, in search of that playful, passionate art.
Enjoy!
Pure poetry.......2006-04-08
Galeano's book remains the most lyrical and whimsical book ever written about soccer / football. He is one of the few writers who has managed to both embody and describe the spirit of the beautiful game at the same time. Wonderful to have such a talented writer and spirit give the game the treatment it deserves. A rare book...

A deck of 64 Affirmation cards to help you find your inner strength
Customer Reviews:
Affirmations are wonderful.......2007-04-24
This is another great product by Louise Hay. The wonderful affirmations are well-done because they give you the mindset of how to think positively and how to create what reality you chose. The author's affirmations are uplighting and can create light in anyone's life. I agree with a previous reviewer that constantly going over affirmations can really change your thinking and thus you're realty in a positive way. What a helpful product!!!!!
Prompt & Pretty.......2007-02-26
Thank you for sending this item in a prompt fashion. It looked good and will be put to good use.
In A Word: Powerful!.......2007-02-25
I rarely give anything I review 5 stars. Usually there is something that I think could be just a little bit better. But that is not the case with these wonderful cards by Louise Hay. They are simply the most positive and powerful set of affirmations I have ever come across. I have seen affirmation cards that are too short or too general. I have seen affirmation cards that are too long or too detailed. But these cards are, in my mind, perfect. You get the basic idea on one side, with a more expansive thought on the back. Pick a card daily, read it, take it to heart, and I assure you that your life will be enhanced -- more peaceful, more joyful, and creatively powerful. Thank you, Louise, for these eloquent and charmingly elegant cards!

Thoughts Have Consequences.......2006-06-24
I have used these cards for about six months now in all sorts of situations. I find the repetitiveness useful. Marketing studies will tell you that people need to hear a message about 23 times before it becomes 'embedded' in their thought processes and they actually act on it. We are bombarded with all kinds of affirmations positive and negative, so many in fact that we can't even begin to count them. Here is a very easy way to set the tone for the day or a conversation or a project, to broach a difficult discussion or to prompt a written inspirational essay. What is true is that on a particularly hectic day you'll find yourself repeating a power thought that has maintained a particular appeal for you, and you will find yourself breathing more easily and getting through what may be a very difficult moment. I've bought two sets, one to keep and one to give away and I have a feeling this friend will not be the last one I buy them for!
...there's no place like home....there's no place like home..........2005-07-28
Like Dorothy, I wish I could just click my heels and say any affirmation on these cards, and somehow it would manifest itself. I am a student of many self-help books and these cards remind me of some of the ones I have read. I'm sure the author of the cards has read and used many of them herself. If, like me, you are also a fan of Tarot Cards, maybe you could use this deck to do a "reading" of sorts, draw some squares on a large sheet of paper, and label each one as an aspect of your daily life....job, relationship, children, parents, friends, inner self, and so on, and then place a card on each square you have and see how the saying on each card relates to it. It might be interesting! DISCLAIMER...If you are some religion which forbids the idea of fortune-telling or divination then don't do this, and don't say I made you do it. Thank You.
The cards are very pretty, I found the colors to be enchanting, but the sayings were repetitive, and I think they were designed that way on purpose because there is always more than one way to say the same thing. Every person is different in the way that they will respond to a given statement, and if the author did the same affirmation six or seven different ways, maybe she figured it would reach more people that way. Try them yourself and see what you think....they're nice cards!

Power Animal Oracle Cards.......2007-05-13
I use these cards everyday and have done some readings for other people.. Still learning how to use them.. but I love them.
Great for teaching children and big people! about animal spirits !.......2007-04-18
The best part about these cards for me is that boys and men aren't turned 0ff by them ! My five year old in particular is intrigued by them and then made his own animal deck by cutting out animals out of a book and gluing them on index cards and making up his own meaning for each one based on what he thought the animal was doing in the picture.
They are a great introduction to people turned off by oracle cards ! Who doesn't love animals and who doesn't have a special animal they have felt close to?
As I shuffle,. I can explain to my readee about spirits of animals, and they get into it ! I have actually had very good readings with these cards also, and sometimes my readee finds their own meaning in the cards they chose (even better for them !)
Another use for these cards is if I feel I need a particular animal with me, I pull out the card and place it where I can see it or carry it in my purse. And sometimes one of my kids will ask me which animal spirit will help them on something, a problem or project, and we pull a card or more and they like to hear about the animal "helpers" on the other side.
They almost always "fit". Like when my son was sick, he pulled the snake card, the healer.
My one com plaint is that I wish there were MORE than just 44 cards, and my personal totem or power animal wasn't in there, the Ostrich.
Every animal is important and has things to offer you. DOn't dismiss an animal just because it wasn't what you expected or wanted. If you leave your mind open you will realize that that animal was perfect for you, whether it be your personal power animal or just an animal spirit here to teach a lesson.
THis card deck was bought for fun to add to my oracle decks, but it led me to study more about animal spirits and I now have several books on them and journeying with animals.
Have Fun !
Nice, simple, and fun.......2006-12-27
The simplicity of this card-deck is very nice. I have enjoyed working with the deck and reading the brief explanations in the included guidebook.
Power Animal Oracle Cards.......2006-07-02
If you are looking for some insight to the unknown that we are always so afraid to confront, these cards will bring an abundance of positive energy to you. No matter what issues, or maybe no issues, you may be experiencing, each animal passes along an "aha" moment and sheds light upon your essence. They are simple and they provide an energy that can heal, create, and explore.
Power Animal Oracle Cards.......2006-04-11
This is an exceptionally well-done card deck. The cards are attractive and the messages are helpful, thought provoking and consistently right on track. I used them with a group of 10 friends and each of us selected the "perfect" card that gave us the exact message we neeeded in that moment. We were all struck by the power of the messages and how the message not only made sense and provided guidance but actually spoke to our souls as well. We were deeply touched by the experience and are committed to using the cards on a daily basis.

Product Description
History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Body Balance Works!.......2007-09-11
Body Balance is a stunningly beautiful card deck based on ancient healing traditions that enable the user to activate the body's own wisdom. Using the imagery of the elements - air, earth, water, fire, and space - the positive messages on the cards, reinforced by the beautiful graphics, facilitate growth toward balance in the realms of the physical, the mental, the emotional, and the spiritual.
Though working with the cards is designed to bring balance and healing to eating patterns, the focus is not on food, diet, calories, or exercise. It is rather about growing awareness. For example, one Fire card reads "Fire: Empowerment. My life force is strong as I fill with universal energy and the rivers of my body run clear. I am the master of my energy and I use it as I choose." A Water card: "Compassion. As I love and accept all of myself, I can love and accept humankind. Compassion begins with me."
As I work with the cards I sense them drawing me toward a matrix of wholeness, in which eating patterns evolve to support healing of every aspect of one's life.
The accompanying booklet suggests a number of ways of exploring the deck, both by choice and by chance. I like to work deeply with them several days a week, and each day choose one card to practice that day.
Body Balance is a unique and welcome addition to the long tradition of Angel Cards, Tarot Decks, Affirmation Decks, Celtic Wisdom, and Oracle decks.
Your body (and mind and spirit) will thank you for working with Body Balance.

Inspiring Affirmations You Can Stick Anywhere.......2004-03-18
This is a really neat deck of 50 positive affirmations. What's unique about these colorful, laminated cards is that they're re-usable, and you can stick them anywhere. You peel off the paper from the back of the cards, and place them in prominent places like the bathroom mirror, refrigerator, car dashboard, computer monitor, etc. When the sticky material wears off, all you have to do is wash the cards with water and they return to their original stickiness. Affirmations on these beautifully illustrated cards include:
Loving others is easy when I love and accept myself
There is plenty for everyone, including me
I now go beyond other people's fears and limitations
The point of power is always in the present moment
I trust my inner wisdom.
Visual affirmations can help us stay on track, align our thoughts with our intent, and encourage us on our journey in self development.

Almost Wonderful..........2002-01-30
* * * Let me preface my opinion by saying that I own the regular deck of Power Thought Cards by Louise L. Hay, where the cards are two-sided. I flipped through these cards, and was dissappointed that there were no examples of the verses on the other side of the cards from the original deck. The drawings are more elaborate on these cards, but I feel the verses were better on the side not used. * * *
The drawings on these cards are beautiful! And the fact that they are sticky on one side makes them all the more useful. I can finally put them places I will see them more, like my bathroom mirror, or on my front door. Louise Hay is a master of her field.
