"Life bears the memory of its aquatic origins. Every living creature, animal or plant...even man...is above all a form of water." --Jean Dorst, Water, 1990.

Maryjo Koch's Pond, Lake, River, Sea has been honored as a Scientific American Book of the Year, and it's easy to see why. From the delicate paintings of shrimp and krill to the Japanese-inspired images of carp and goldfish, Koch's illustrations and text not only inform, but entertain as well. A series of close-ups of skin and scales stands on its own as a beautiful piece of art. Quotes from notable figures such as Henry David Thoreau, Norman Maclean, Zane Grey, and Charles Darwin flow along with the hand-lettered text. Learn about subjects as varied as the breathing and sleeping patterns of our underwater friends to the taboos associated with certain types of sea creatures. Koch blends equal parts science, nature, and art, then sprinkles in a dash of humor to create this lovely volume.

Book Description

A sequel to the immensely popular Bird Egg Feather Nest, this is a delightful and informative exploration into life found beneath the surface of ponds, lakes, rivers and the sea. Beautifully expressive watercolor illustrations and handwritten text provide a unique perspective on the complex network of aquatic life.

I go back to this book time and time again to re-read passages, but mostly to look at the glorious pictures and appreciate all the bodies of water and aquatic life honored in this wonderful book. The artwork is magnificent, and the feeling of the book just makes you appreciate your wetlands so much.

Nothing puts quite the same tingling fear in swimmers, surfers, and divers--especially in the quarter century since Peter Benchley's novel Jaws conquered the bestseller charts--as the thought that a shark might be plying its course somewhere in the murky deep below. Thomas Allen plays on that fear in the opening pages of Shadows in the Sea with a strangely entertaining compendium of shark attacks on humans over the centuries. (The humans get their licks in, however, in the pages that follow, in which Allen recounts the exploits of William Young, an Ahab who chased sharks around the world.) Allen goes on to describe the ways in which scientists have attempted to understand the ways of sharks and their selachian kin, the skates and rays; looks at the place of the shark in the world's folklore and cuisine; and examines the commercial shark-fishing industry. His useful book closes with a species-by-species account of the world's principal shark types, from the 6-inch dogfish to the 20-foot great blue shark. Allen does a fine job of giving his readers an idea of the many ways these frightening but fragile denizens of the sea live their lives--and he provides plenty of anecdotes to disturb a beachgoer's dreams. --Gregory McNamee

5 out of 5 stars Respect for Sharks and Man's History with them.......2004-09-29

First published in 1963, Shadows in the Sea has been a popular book about sharks and their relatives, the skates and rays. Thomas Allen tells what he learned from two major contributors to the book. One was Captain William Young, known as "Captain Shark Killer," the other was Mack McCormick, whose shark research is now housed in American Museum of Natural History (New York, USA). According to the author, both men had a deep abiding respect for sharks.

Thomas Allen gives an evenhanded treatment of sharks in Shadows in the Sea. The author divides his subject into four parts: sharks against humans, humans against sharks, sharks as gods or food, and sharks and their relatives as fish. He opens with the famous story of the shark attack in New Jersey in 1916, which formed the basis of the popular Jaws movies. He believes that hunting sharks does not prevent shark attacks. The wrong sharks are usually killed, and the shark population is further depleted. According to Thomas Allen, sharks have a purpose in the ocean ecosystem.

In presenting human-shark history, the author explains the painting by John Singleton Copley, "Brook Watson and the Shark" (1778). The Lord Mayor of London Watson had lost his leg to a shark. Besides including a shark on his family crest, Watson also commissioned Copley to commemorate the event. However, the beast that Copley painted was not a real shark. He imagined the shark as a huge whale possessing a large jaw of sharp teeth. Most European people at that time had little concept of what sharks actually were like.

Thomas Allen recounts how the over-killing of sharks since the 1970s spurred people to save the sharks. In 1991, the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation campaigned against annual shark fishing "derbies" in California.

(Since the "derbies" involved shooting sharks with guns and harpoons, the author refers to them as "massacres".) By 1995, the Foundation was successful in stopping the organized "derbies".

In the last half of the book, the author presents the sharks themselves, and their natural history. He writes, "Whence the Shadows? Aeons before people appeared on earth, the shark was the monarch of the primordial seas. As prehistorical era after era passed---as amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals came forth-the shark remained. The dinosaurs-Brontosaurus, Allosaurus, Triceratops, and a thousand more-stalked the earth in ponderous supremacy and vanished into extinction. But the shark lives on. Millions upon millions of years before the first precursor of man appeared, the shark began a dynasty that has remained unbroken."

In clear language, the author explains shark naming (taxonomy) and shark anatomy. After reading this book, the reader will have a greater appreciation of sharks. Thomas Allen emphasizes that sharks are to be admired and cherished for what they do. Sharks deserve a chance to be saved from extinction.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Rare information covered,.......2001-06-20

I read this book after years of interest in the Ocean and all things therein. I had thought I read most of the published accounts of the more well-known incidents, especially here in teh U.S. This book taught me so much more was available. This is the best coverage of the New Jersey shark attacks (with photos) just now being covered in greater detail in 2 newly published books. It covers the story of an old shark fisherman, an evolution of our study of sharks and of attacks and biological data. One of the best.

this is one of the most informative and fascinating books i have ever read. i have used it for giving speeches and for teaching. the illustrations are very interesting along with the other art works included. i must own close to a thousand books , but this is one of the very few which i read over and over.

5 out of 5 stars The most accurate shark book on the market.......2000-01-20

Well, what can i say? i LOVE this book. From the first pages, an account of the "rogue shark" off New Jersey in 1916, this book is informative, exciting, and sometimes even endearing...stories of shark fisherman, attacks, and a comprehensive guide to sharks commonly found in North American oceans, i have never read a shark book that is so full of information...READ THIS BOOK!

Book Description

Waterside Living is an evocative celebration of waterside homes from around the world. From a houseboat on the Seine in Paris to a log cabin in Maine, the homes share an architecture and interior design that are in tune with the waterside setting, with a choice of colours, furniture, and artifacts that brings the qualities of water indoors - whether it is a still life of pebbles or a palette of blues, soft greens, and grays.

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Many of these Homes are Afforable........2006-08-13

Living beside the water is kind of a dream that a lot of us have. Well, maybe the dream is for only part of the year. Living on the water in Maine during January, or in Louisiana in August isn't exactly the dream I hold most dear. (The day I left living by the water in Louisiana it was 108 degrees and 85%.)

Then again, I pick up this book, and as the sub-title says there are homes by lakes, rivers, and the sea. There's something about watching the water flow by. Something mesmerizing at watching the ever changing water constantly moving. Even in the houses show here that are in Maine where the lakes freeze every winter, there's the changing of the seasons.

Then when you look at the houses by the pounding surf, or the houseboat in Paris. There's an idea. I wonder what's available in London.

This book is a photographic extravaganza of a bakers dozen home from around the country, around the world. Surprisingly many of them are not the super expensive mansions that so many books seem to prefer. Here are some home that even I might be able to afford.

Jerome, the author of the fine study On Mountains and many other books, turns his attention to his lifelong quest for "perfect waters" in this limpid book of natural history and personal reflection. He takes his readers to little-known streams like the Mountain Fork River of Oklahoma, the scene of his earliest memories, and the turbulent Raquette River in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. He dips into the warm, healing waters of the Caribbean and the cold depths of Canadian lakes, and examines the play of water in the human imagination, an influence that has been profound in music, art, and literature. Jerome writes with evident love for his subject, and his lyrical book speaks to the power of waters to make us whole.

5 out of 5 stars aquatic blue rooms to ease dryland blue moods.......2004-09-05

This is simply one of the very best books written about the joy, adventure, contact and contemplation of water. I have dipped into it frequently and recommended it to many. And I have quoted it 8 times (few authors other than Thoreau were quoted more frequently) in my own recent book Deep Immersion: The Experience of Water (nominated for top environmental book of the year). Jerome's prose is wonderful and his stories engaging. He simply loves to get wet and would well understand Thoreau's maxim: "That part of you that is wettest is fullest of life" (quoted in Profitably Soaked: Thoreau's Engagement With Water, Green Frigate Books, 2003).

5 out of 5 stars Once again, Jerome is fantastic........1999-09-30

John Jerome has, in recent years, become one of my favorite writers thanks to his elegant and straightforward prose style. I ordered "Blue Rooms" the moment I heard it was out, and I was not disappointed. This is a terrific book.

"Blue Rooms" is about a lifelong love affair with water. From playing in the muddy San Marcos river as a boy, to kayaking the cold waters of Canadian lakes as a grown man, it seems Jerome has always been fascinated by water. Most of the earth's surface, he points out, is water. So is most of the human body.

What strikes me most about this book is the way in which Jerome takes a personal obsession and makes it understandable to his readers. By the end of the book I could have sworn I had a lifelong love affair with water, too, even though I'm a mediocre swimmer who lives in hills far from any large water source. Really, this is a terrific book. Go out and buy it. You won't be sorry.

Deserves more than five stars! It covers everything that will benefit everyone from the new rider to the avid dressage competitor. Excellent!!! No horse lover's bookshelf should be without it, in my opinion! You definately get the bang for your buck on this one!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Beginning Dressage Enthusiasts.......2001-06-19

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Western Rider learning English Riding.......2000-11-25

I have been a Western rider for over 20 years. I recently decided to try English riding, and have purchased many books regarding the subject. This is the first book that has been clear and easy to understand for a beginner. Topics include proper attire, English saddle fit, dressage scoring, proper grooming, mental and physical preparation, and the basics the horse and rider need to know to compete. This book explained a lot of the terms (like half-halt) that were not familiar to me. It even addressed the similarities between Western and Dressage rider position. After reading this book, other books I have purchased on English riding and Dressage make a lot more sense! Highly recommended for the "new to English" folks out there.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful book.......2000-05-30

This book really covers a lot of topics that new dressage riders and potential showers want to know about. It is aimed at the training level rider who is considering competition or has perhaps done a little showing. It has a very common sense approach and deals with topics such as how to memorize tests, how to come up with warmup routines, how to handle nerves, etc. The author seems to have thought of all the little questions that new riders would come up with, but more advanced riders would have forgotten that they didn't know (if that makes sense!) The book is not totally about showing though, and has good advice on schooling, and what the horse's frame should be at different levels. It also deals with more advanced topics such as confirmation of dressage horses (for those people considering purchasing a more advanced horse than the one they start with) and quadrille, musical freestyle programs etc. A worthwhile book with a wealth of information for the novice rider.

5 out of 5 stars A great resouce book for the dressage enthusiast.......2000-05-28

I am an adult rider who is new to the art of dressage and found this book to be a valuable resource. Not only does it discuss the basics of dressage tests and levels, but great tips on getting ready for the show--for both the rider and the horse. I would recommend this book the any beginner who wants a broader picture of dressage.

Readers familiar with the previous edition will find a text that retains all the features that make Rulebook ideally suited for use as a supplementary course book-including its modest price and compact size.

Unlike most textbooks on argumentative writing, Rulebook is organized around specific rules, illustrated and explained soundly and briefly. It is not a textbook, but a rulebook, whose goal is to help students get on with writing a paper or assessing an argument.

            4 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-08-24

I found this book good exactly for what it claims to be a rulebook for arguments. It explains how you should do it and gives some useful definitions so you will know what others are referring too.

What struck me while reading this book is that although over the years I have become experienced in arguing, I am not used of arguing to find the truth! In daily life we often end out having to defending a position often that we know is wrong, to do so we often break the rules in this book. It might help you with that too!

5 out of 5 stars Must read for everyone..........2007-08-13

I have rarely found a book that can deliver so much useful material in less than 90 pages.

The book shows using practical explanations and examples how to construct arguments properly. This is followed by guidance on writing essays that are convincing. Lastly, fallacies in arguments are discussed. I had a hard time putting it down once I started it.

In today's world where much work gets done impersonally, we rely more on communication by e mails and/or phone. The opportunity for misunderstandings, and sending wrong messages is rather high. This book provides valuable guidance on how to ensure your writing is clear, crisp, and convincing.

I wish more authors would follow these guidelines, in my future books I will.

This is an easy to read, well organized, short book that will help you to improve your reasoning. Or, at least, detect poor thinking. It is good to have a copy at hand.

3 out of 5 stars A basic but helpful shortcut for beginners and undergrads.......2007-05-19

I do agree with the majority of reviewers here this little book does help to improve one's critical and logical thinking. However, I am obliged to comment that the degree of satisfaction depends much on a reader's previous experience with similar books and his/her level/background of education. That's nothing the matter with the capabilities of the author but apparently he had tailored his book to be as concise and easy to read as possible. In that respect, he had done a good job. For advanced readers, "Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking by Neil Browne" and "101 Philosophy Problems by Martin Cohen" would be more suitable.

            1 out of 5 stars A lightweight pamphlet, not a text.......2007-05-13

This is a lightweight pamphlet written about proposition, not a meaty discourse on the philosphical argument. If you are looking for the different type and processes of argument, look for something in critical thinking or philosphy.
