5 out of 5 stars When you want to do something different..........2006-12-23

I've read the reviews for this book and can help but notice they are all 5 stars or 2/1 stars. Clearly there is a disconnect.

I read this book a few months before I packed up my life and hit the road to travel for a year (I thought). Up until this point in my life my wildest travels had been traveling around Europe with my parents, a package trip to Tahiti, and many drunken nights in Mexico. Not the seasoned independent traveler. This book motivated me, and gave me a philosophy that just felt right for me. When I finished reading this I was super excited to hit the road - something that had been waning as the date approached.

Well I left and my one year trip kept on getting extended. Almost five years and eighty countries later I finally arrived home again. And I still am a huge fan of this book. I carried the last chapter of the book (the ultra light guidebook) with me the entire time. I still have the mutilated original first edition sitting proudly on my book shelf (just last week I had to wrestle with my wife over my need to keep it.) I am eagerly waiting for the third edition when I will gladly re-read The World Awaits. Perhaps from the position of experience I will be disappointed, but I don't think so.

In short if you have not traveled much (or have not traveled much in the developing world) and think that you might someday want to go on a trip - this book is for you. If you have no desire in traveling, and don't understand why anyone would want to put on a backpack and see what is out there - this book is also for you.

If you have hitch-hiked through West Africa; gone to an airport to get on the next plane going someplace interesting; or keep your travel immunizations and passport up to date "just in case" - this book might not be for you, you've probably already developed your own philosophy and probably do not need to be encouraged to leave your house. But this book might still be a pleasant reminder that there are kindred souls out there...

    Peace and safe travels

2 out of 5 stars The world awaits...but not for me to finish this book!.......2006-11-21

...because I do not think that is going to happen. I have only NOT finished one other book in my life, but I really did not see any point in spending more time reading past the 3/4 mark of this guide. I did try!

In all fairness to the author, I do not know what I really expected from this book. I read the reviews and thought I would give it a try, though I am usually not one to seek instruction on undertakings as individually-tailored as travel. I like the idea of "threading," but the idea hardly seems novel; one only has to travel once to understand that the journey is measured as much by the travel between destinations as in the places themselves. Aside from this common ground, I find little of the author's advice useful. If you are really going to be doing the kind of cultural trekking that the author describes, you would probably be best to think through your own plan instead and "situationalize" what could happen on your particular route and your plans.

This book may be good for someone who calls a one-week stay in a Las Vegas hotel a vacation. Besides that, I see little difference between the wisened "threader" and the jet-bound traveller who only hits major cities in his/her travels - both are engaged in an experience of going and doing, in their own ways, and not so much about being in a place.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing rambling.......2006-07-03

Doesn't truly catch your attention. I've read 4 other world travel books and am only halfway through this one. Kind of rambles on and isn't writtent o be catchy. Go with Vagabonding by Rolf Potts and/or Rough Guides: First Time Around the World for better writting and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars It had to happen.......2004-06-04

    Greetings--

I'm the author of The World Awaits. I haven't posted anything about my books on Amazon in the past but thought I would now in response to Rodney Douglass review below--one sharply contrary to all other reviews of both editions of The World Awaits. I realize my book isn't for everyone. I have to admit, however, that such a terse and negative quip stings a bit. My apologies to the reviewer, who I assume purchased the book here and feels that it was money poorly spent.

I would be glad to hear from Mr. Douglas regarding the details of the complaint. I can be reached via worldawaits.com. Others wishing to know more about The World Awaits are also encouraged to visit the site, which is structured like the book and includes many excerpts. I welcome all communication.

My thanks to the very many of you who have supported The World Awaits with encouraging feedback. The third edition is in the works.

I welcome email questions and opinions.

    Cheers,

    Paul Otteson

5 out of 5 stars Write this way..........2004-04-21

This book, `Patterns for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide' edited by Laurie G. Kirszner and Stephen R. Mandell, is a book widely used in colleges and universities, as well as advanced high school classes across the nation. It is a very useful text, and I use it when tutoring students in preparation for community college level writing and reading work. It is used at our college in the basic skills reading courses, too.

The book looks at how writers develop their work. The first few chapters look at some of the basic mechanics of writing - planning, writing, editing and revising. It also looks briefly at certain skills needed for writing, such as brainstorming and idea generation, as well as journal writing. There are many exercises included here to give students first-hand experience.

The second section looks at the various types of writing students will be called upon to produce - narrative papers, process papers, cause-and-effect, descriptive works, comparison-and-contrast, classification, definition, and persuasive/argumentative papers. Each chapter keeps a solid focus on the type of work presented, so that students can develop the particular skills; the final chapter in this section looks at combining the patterns, to produce more complex and comprehensive research papers and essays.

There is a thematic listing of articles that shows the breadth of topics covered - family relationships, language, education, business and work, sports, race and culture, gender, nature and the environment, media and society, history and politics, and ethics. Among more than one hundred articles are sixteen pieces written by actual students, so that students can see the model produced by people at their same level of development. Writings from famous people such as Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Flannery O'Connor and Mark Twain also give breadth and interest to the selections included here.

The writing assignments include journal writing, essays of the types modeled in the chapters, collaborative activities, and even an internet assignment. There is a companion website for students to use, and instructors can take advantage of materials provided by the publisher, such transparencies and additional samples.

The appendix has a ten-step process for writing a research paper (one of the more common types of college writing expected of students). The steps include everything from choosing a topic to documenting sources. Avoiding common pitfalls such as plagiarism (intentional and inadvertent) is also covered.

3 out of 5 stars This isn't just another college text........2003-07-26

For me, this collection of student and author essays was worth the purchase alone. However the chapters are also helpful how-tos for writing research papers and essays in college. The book provides a thorough look at different types of writing expected in college.

I remember using this book frequently. I also remember how much I had to write in college. The amount of paper I used in college is staggering. It is reflective of the move to higher expectations in society for composing professional writing.

I can't stress enough the importance of reading and writing as a learning tool. Through writing, students, readers and others can record their thoughts, become more expressive, and be more effective communicators.

Gradually the internet and the world wide web have made us more and more reckless with our writing. Books like this can only be beneficial. Chapters address essays, research papers, analysis , and reading responses. Although newer editions are available, the same high quality found in this edition can be expected. I have three editions of this book. All have been helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Even for the casual reader.......2000-10-31

I used this book in a highschool course called Advance Composition. It was excellent, not only as a tutor in how to write essays, but because of it's choice of examples. Essays on everything from workaholics to environmental issues, made for hours of reading pleasure. Also, it drew on works of relevant authors of the time, including Deborah Tannen and even Al Gore. I didn't realize essays could have such value, even for the casual reader.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource and guide!.......2000-08-22

Very accessible and thorough..the eighth edition is a wonderful text for teaching introductory college writing. As a writing instructor, this text is highly recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars Helpful Book.......1999-08-18

This textbook is helpful as well as enjoyable. The essays in this book are interesting and are great examples of the writing style. Although many of the essays are wonderful examples of the writing patterns, a few essays do not correctly display the patterns. I highly recommend this book to an professor trying to find a textbook for a compostion class. Students will enjoy the stories and learn helpful writing patterns at the same time. I also recommend this book to any student having troube writing college level essays.

        Book Description

This respected, rhetorically-arranged reader shows students, through accessible language and remarkable literary examples, how underlying rhetorical structures stimulate and direct all clear thinking and effective writing. And while THINKING IN WRITING covers traditional rhetorical principles, it also reflects the contemporary and practical work being done on the interconnectedness of composition and cognition. The introductory chapter and the apparatus for each essay is designed to help students generate ideas and turn them into effective papers. The fourth edition provides an extraordinary update with over 70% new readings, new "thematically-paired" essays in each chapter, a new photo insert that shows the role of rhetoric and the construction of gender in rhetoric in advertising, and much much more.

4 out of 5 stars Book Club enjoyed this Book.......2007-10-10

My book club really enjoyed this book. We had a great two-hour discussion about the stories in this book. The author touched on Bible stories that many of us had never studied before. Overall, it was a fast read and very educational.

                      5 out of 5 stars Sister Talk.......2007-06-02

This book is a book for soul searching. You will never look at yourself or any other woman the same. This book will make you do a self assessment and take inventory on your life. Sisters in Christ should read this book together in a group setting or for a women bible study. This book is also a book that can be given as a gift and should be very much appreciated.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Good Connection.......2006-06-27

If you've ever thought about or wondered how closely connected today's women are the Bibical women, then this is the book for you. Tastefully presented, thought provoking, and easily understood by any woman of today.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent First Time Experience.......2006-03-25

This was my first experience with Amazon. The service was impeccable, I received the books even sooner than they told me which was great as I needed them for a Bible Study class I was attending. The books were in excellent condition and based on this experience I will definitely make future purchases through Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Just A Sister Away... My sister.......2006-03-17

Author Renita J. Weems appeared to be playing the "Devil's Advocate" when she used familiar lessons from the Bible like Abraham and Sarah, Naomi and Ruth, Martha and Mary, Jephthah's Daughter and the Mourning Women and so on. But what is so awesome about "Just A Sister Away" is we were able to take a peek into the minds and hearts of the women who were not considered to be "chosen" of God and those who were placed in a predicament that was not of their doing, like Hagar.

Weems gives readers an opportunity to walk in the shoes of women, like Hagar, who was first used by her owner Sarah and then thrown away once Sarah realized she made a mistake giving Hagar to her husband, Abraham. But what no one ever talks about is what Hagar was going through; she has been made to look like a home wrecker in the lessons we have heard over and over again, but we find in this lesson that in spite of the plans Sarah (Sarai) had, God still had a plan for Hagar and her son, Ishmael.

"Just A Sister Away" reminds us that there is always more than one side of the story, and it is fascinating to read from the perspective of those whose voice is not really heard throughout the Bible just what may have been going through their minds and the emotions they experienced. Most importantly of all, we are reminded that God does indeed favor women. We can be found throughout the Word of God.

I found it very hard to get into this book and consequently I havn't managed to finish it. Usually I can keep pushing through books but not this one. Its boring and dull has no life the characters are dull. If those of you who have managed to get through this book and have enjoyed it, good for you and well done

                      4 out of 5 stars A Well Woven Tale.......2007-06-07

This is a wonderfully told story. Some of the minor characters seemed a bit improbable but that's what fiction is all about! There are so few stories written today about families that really love each other so the relationship between the sisters is rewarding. Each chapter changes to continue the story line of one family member or another as the story progresses. At the end of each chapter I would be so interested that I was disappointed to rejoin the story of a different character - which character I would forget about two pages into the next chapter! The only reason a star is missing is that the ending left me with an unsettled feeling for one of the sisters because in reality her husband's alcoholism would not be so easily dealt with.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing family drama!.......2007-04-15

Contemporary and heartwarming, this story is about a family who seems to have it all until one day they start having to open up one by one until they realize that everyone has ups and downs. Cathy Kelly does a tremendous job of making the characters sympathetic and believable. It felt like home when I read it and helped me feel even more comfortable with my family. It's good to be reminded that we are only human and that its okay to have faults and mistakes. Afterall, a true friend is one who knows all your faults, your deepest/darkest secrets and still loves you for you. This is a from the heart page turner that starts out simple, but with the greatly timed twists and plots, this story grows more complicated with every chapter, and sometimes every page. I would highly reccomend this book!

4 out of 5 stars A little on the cheesy side, but was a great read!.......2007-04-04

I haven't quite reached the end of this very long novel yet, but have enjoyed the developing story line. I enjoyed the concept that of this seemingly perfect family being far from flawless. The story line shows that once you delve under the surface, no one has the perfect life.

However, aside from the story line, I found the wording to be a little cheesy. The characters in the book would openly talk about feelings, when real-life situations would most likely not warrant the same reactions. It is, on the other hand, an easy read. So, if you can get past the cheesy lines, and are looking for something to quickly speed through, this is the book.

                      5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-03-17

I love this book! All of Cathy Kelly's books give the point of view of a few different people and it keeps you so interested. The main characters this time were that of a well known family in a small town. Rose, the matriarch is just approaching her 40th wedding anniversary and has kept the fact that her husband unfaithful to herself for almost all of the 40 years. Her oldest daughter, Stella, is raising her young daughter on her own and is just falling in love for the first time since the birth of her daughter. Rose's middle daughter, Tara, is blissfully newly married, or so she thought. Tara is struggling through her whirlwind marriage and learning her husband has a few secrets of his own. And Rose's poor youngest daughter, Holly, has a lack of self confidence all stemming from Rose's own problems when Holly was a baby.

It's such a good book that takes you into the minds of each of the woman and they gain control of their lives.
