5 out of 5 stars Well researched, highly entertaining, accessible........1998-04-07

This highly readable historical narrative provides interesting and entertaining nuggets of information about the brilliant eccentrics who named the birds, mammals and plants of North America. It's a great prep for the birder and botanist seeking context for why, when and how North American flora and fauna got their names. This tidy little volume needs to be on the bookshelf of every vacation hideway whose charm is mostly linked to natural beauty nearby. Ever wonder who Baird, Brewer, Bewick, LeConte, Douglas, or Rafinesque were? It's all here. Thomas Jefferson, DeWitt Clinton, Lewis and Clark, too. It's a fascinating and highly enjoyable read.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

One of the art's earliest and most complete training manuals, The Method of Chinese Wrestling explores all aspects of this ancient fighting system, including solo training, training with equipment, constructing training apparatus, application of techniques, and the rules of competition. Throwing, gripping, and falling techniques are revealed in minute detail, and in accompanying photographs, the author and his top students illustrate the methods described. Both a fascinating historical document and a practical training guide, the book is an essential reference for anyone interested in the martial arts.

A lot of historical background.

For me, the main benefit were the training methods and their similarities and differences from those used in tai chi chuan. 2 kinds of bang, rope.

5 out of 5 stars Only for those in the know!.......2006-10-18

Tim who very well may be the most complete martial artist living in North America has done an excellent job on this "project". That said. if you haven't read some of his other works(ie:"Effortless Combat Throws....") and more importantly had "mat time" your probably aren't going to get a great deal from this read.

4 out of 5 stars Good text if you're going to do the work........2006-04-02

I recently picked up this book and basically agree with the other reviewers in that it is a quality book. The presentation is clear and pretty easy to follow. It's the kind of book that really gives you a place to start, but of course you've got to do the work. Isn't that always the way?

One caution though, there is not much in the way of commentary on the history of philosophy of Chinese Wrestling in this book, it's more manual than text book.

5 out of 5 stars Great 1930s classic.......2006-02-24

Cartmell has done a great service to martial artists by translating this classic text. As he says in the introduction, the photos are still surprisingly easy to understand, despite being a little blurry and lacking in contrast compared to modern photos. But you can still clearly see the techniques in the photos, making this a book one can actually learn something from for this still obscure art.

Divided into two parts, the first presents the basic techniques and training methods, and the second shows the applications. I'm no expert on wresting, but it seems there are many more extended positions and where the body is cantilevered out to off-balance and throw the opponent. Not too surprisingly, there are techniques that are analogous to judo and jiujitsu and to western wrestling, since the basic principles of balance, power, leverage, physics, anatomy, physiology, and technique don't change.

Coincidently, my first tai chi teacher from northern China knew some Shuai Ciao and taught it to me during the years we trained, and it was fun to learn something about this truly rare art. Looking through this book brought back those old memories from 25 years ago. I can also personally vouch for the efficacy of these techniques. One time my teacher demonstrated one of the back wrenching techniques a little too enthusiastically, and my back was sore for a week. :-) Overall, a great classic from the past that deserved to be resurrected and brought to the attention of modern readers and students of the grappling arts.

5 out of 5 stars A Detailed and Historical work on Shuai Jiao..........2006-01-18

Author Tim Cartmell presents his translation of Tong Zhong-Yi's original 1935 book, "Chinese Wrestling Methods", obtained through Taiwanese publisher Lion Books. This historic work on the Chinese martial art of Shuai Jiao (sometimes spelled Shuai Chiao) includes all of the original photos showing Tong and his students demonstrating a variety of techniques.

As a technical manual, this work details traditional training methods, balance, striking, how to obtain strength, walking properly, throwing, training with a partner, Shuai Jiao falling methods (different from Judo and most other arts), rules, and a complete history of the author Tong and the art are included. This book is a step back in time, offering a look at a martial discipline which has actually changed very little over the years, and should appeal to those with an interest in combative arts development and history. While some of the photos appear grainy, considering the age of the original I did not find this to detract from my ability to understand. What I do find surprising is the level of detail offered in an instructive book from 1935!

Perhaps the most ironic thing about the release of this book is that while Shuai Jiao has been practiced in the United states for nearly 30 years, this is the most complete work in English to date covering the ~traditional~ aspects of Shuai Jiao training! Included in the beginning are nice portrait photos of Tong and other prominent Teachers and Coaches of Shuai Jiao. A group photo shows a number of sturdy looking Shuai Jiao men including one in the back row, fourth from left with his hands held separately in cleanched fists, rather than one hand clasping the wrist like the others...could this be a young Chang Tung-sheng?

I found Cartmell's translation to be detailed and easy to understand. It is good to see so many martial artists in our present generation who have made an effort to understand the language and culture of the arts they practice. To be able to understand these practices in the context of their culture is a gift that enhances understanding for all of us. To Tim Cartmell, Thank You for sharing!

This book is fantastic. I'm new to the language and have several resources on hand, but this book is my favorite. It systematically presents key concepts and is very thorough.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for beginners to learn Russian.......2007-04-11

Alright, i'll break it down for you. This book gives you EVERYTHING you need to learn how to speak russian fluently. The book itself is broken down into lessons and throughout the lessons its broken down further into Exercises. Then, at the end of the lesson they have anywhere from four to six exercises. Make sure your actually DOING THEM! they will help you immensely. At the end of the book they have a Russian to English and then after that an English to Russian vocabulary section that covers most of the common words in russian (the vocab. takes up the last 200 pages). DONT BE INTIMITADED, stay open minded, ask questions (if you have the resourses), have fun and enjoy it. Russian is an awesome language!

5 out of 5 stars After a year, still my favorite russian book.......2007-03-12

There's not much I can add to what all the other reviewers have already said. I'm an expat living in Russia for a year so far and I'm currently taking classes using a different text (Ben Clark), and I still pull this book out regularly. People of course have many different learning styles and I guess for some genius polyglots, this may not be the best method, but for me the material seems to have a very organic presentation to it. It's certainly not a phrasebook, but the author does tend to present commonly used words and phrases as earlier in the text rather than later. This is a serious book and you can expect to be doing some concentrated studying if you want enjoy its full benefit. I highly recommend this book and it's some of the best money I've spent before coming here.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2007-02-13

This is possibly the most helpful self-teaching book I've ever seen. If you stick with it and do all the exercises, you'll be shocked at how quickly and how well you learn the language. Keep in mind that you will still need to either take classes with a live teacher or get an audio teaching course on top of using this book, or your pronunciation will probably be terrible. I also got some vocabulary flashcards (and make my own for the alphabet), but whether or not you'd find those helpful just depends on how you learn best.

I found the detail in this book regarding what to do if your identity is stolen the most helpful. Johnny May details the steps to take in reporting identity theft very thoroughly.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Many Times the Cover Price.......2004-08-16

A well-written and informative book that helps you protect your personal information both at home and at your workplace. The book is full of resources and includes step-by-step guidelines to safeguard your identity and what to do if it is stolen. A must read for all of us.

I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating, Valuable Resource.......2004-05-19

Identity theft has gained an increasing amount of attention with the upsurge in incidents that cost the victims thousands of dollars and untold hours to clean up the mess caused by the thieves. This book, written by an independent security consultant specializing in identity theft, presents a wealth of fascinating facts about the crime, its growth, how to prevent it, and what to do if you're a victim.

One of the facts brought out in the book highlights the importance of prevention: the average reporting time-discovery-of the crime is fourteen months after the damage has been done! Consider this little book to be a wake-up call and heed the advice carefully.

The first 91 pages are devoted to an insightful-and sometimes astonishing-report of what identity theft is all about. Readers will gain a broad education and learn about vulnerabilities they'd never even dreamed of! With the problem clearly delineated, May spends the balance of the book providing a comprehensive listing of resources, advice, and tools for prevention and response.

This book should be read carefully by anyone with a credit card, social security number, driver's license, checking account... Get it? Everyone! Employers will benefit from the book, as well, particularly if their employees-or others (explained in the book)-have access to personal information about employees, customers, or even suppliers.

Highly recommended. Content and readability give this book a great return on your investment of the purchase and reading time.

LIMITED to 3,000 copies worldwide. Johnny Dark's work as a writer and photographer has been edited and published for the first time, under the editorial direction of Bruce Weber, Nan Bush, and Sherri Wasserman. From the Publisher: Who is Johnny Dark? Poetic shutterbug. Fiery, renegade bohemian. Unapologetic beat generation sensualist. A myriad of monikers spring to mind when first encountering the cool appeal of Johnny Darks debut effort People I May Know-- a volume rife with guns, drugs and sexual escapades played out against the sweeping tableau of the American West. But even as this mythology gathers in the reader's mind, it is complicated to the point of irrelevance with the turn of the page and the revelation of other dispositions. For Johnny Dark is equally the creator of visual vocabulary all his own, one fraught with tenderness, romance and a deep curiosity about the people he may know. A memoir in the loosest sense of the term, People I May Know follows the casual, spontaneous path of an artist whose most realized idioms are detached observation and obsessive documentation of the people and places he happens upon. Part travel journal, part family album, People I May Know is characterized by fragmentary narrative, deep personal reflection, and photographs that evoke an unmistakable sense of time and place. Johnny Dark's debut meanders from New York and Spain to Nova Scotia and New Mexico, his lens ever trained on the quiet psychological dramas at work within his patchwork family. This restless group-- comprised of his wife Scarlett, her two daughters Kristy and O-Lan, the author/playwright Sam Shepard, and Shepard's son Jesse-- are Dark's preferred subjects, his portraits of them comprising the emotional heartbeat of People I May Know. Johnny Dark's cinematic landscapes are equally evocative all dusty prairies, threatening skies, and vacant western towns that perfectly mirror the struggles and disquiet of his most familiar companions.

          Book Description

In a landmark work that continues the tradition established fifty years ago by the legendary Tom Meany, sports analyst David Shiner fills in the last fifty years with portraits of modern baseball's Greats. From Aaron to Yastrzemski, Dave tells the stories of how and why the greatest players achieved so much. Filled with thrills and insights into what made them tick, Baseball's Greatest Players is a hit in its own right.

          5 out of 5 stars Linking Baseball's Best.......2002-01-10

As we share Shiner's nostalgia, we rediscover Aaron, Mays, McCovey, Mantle, and Gibson, old heros, old memories. Baseballs Greatest Players, The Saga Continues is more than a Who's Who of baseball, it's a way of life, a catalog of events, a collection of memories. As Shiner reveals the greatest players, we, who are old enough to remember, bask in their glory and relive our own unachieved ambitions.

But Shiner does more than take us back, he bundles the past with the present and into the future, tyingthe memories together forever in our minds. McGuire's record-setting season rekindles other home run hitters: Roger Maris, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, even Babe Ruth. We connect to the present, even anticipate the future. McGuire's 70 home run season triggers a vision of people diving into San Francisco Bay to retrieve the balls Barry Bonds his in 2001, the year he surpassed McGuire's record.

Baseball fans will love this book, others will like it. It's clearly, simply, and accurately presented and guaranteed to stir a memory or two.

4 out of 5 stars One For The Books.......2001-07-30

With the writing of Baseball's Greatest Players, author David Shiner takes a serious risk. The only thing a sports fan loves more than making a "greatest list" is arguing voluably about why the other guy's list is WRONG! One read of this book will shut down most any other greatest list's chances, and it does so with style, wit, and a healthy dose of readable fact.

In its text, Shiner's book fulfils both the needs of casual fan's interest and the SABR-members desire for solid, quantifiable statistical evidence. But it goes beyond just fact and storytelling to get to the intangibles that separate the players truly great between the white lines from those whose personality and dedication supported not just their teams, but the game itself.

Baseball, more than any other sport (though Canadian hockey fans will rightly take exception to this) carries its past with it. This continuity, this love of the game that both transcends and unites generations is served well by Shiner's writing. Buy Baseball's Greatest Players, and take it to a sports bar near you. You won't go wrong.

          5 out of 5 stars 50 Years of Baseball's Best Players--Fun and Interesting!.......2001-06-18

It's hard not to enjoy this well written, easily readable book on baseball's best players of the past 50 years. Lively anecdotes plus comprehensive (but not boring) analysis shows exactly why these are the best players of the game. I got a kick out of remembering a lot of things I had almost forgotten, like just how good Bob Gibson was. Some of the facts are amazing, like that in the last two years Sandy Koufax pitched, there were 8 games where the Dodgers only scored one run for him--but he won 4 of them. This book also avoids wallowing in sex and drug garbage. It's a baseball book, not National Enquirer. Balanced, interesting, a really solid piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Fun & Interesting Book on Baseball.......2001-06-01

Brief synopses of baseball's best players during the past 50 years. Fun and informative. Enjoyed reading this, think others would also.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK ON BASEBALL'S GREAT PLAYERS!.......2001-05-29

What an enjoyable book! I loved it. Great short biographies of the greatest baseball players from the past 50 years. For the serious baseball fan or the novice (or anyone who wants to know the story behind legendary players like Mantle and Mays, or why Ricky Henderson really IS one of the greatest players ever). Whether you are ten or eighty, this book is fun, interesting, and helps explain why millions love baseball--and their heroes! Makes a great gift for kids or adults. Exciting stories, well written.

1 out of 5 stars This is an extremely basic book on identity theft.......2005-10-22

This is an extremely basic book on identity theft. For someone who is elderly and has really bad eyesight it is a good primmer to identity theft as the book has vary large type.

All the information in it that matters is available on the Internet for free. The book is really only 67 pages long. The rest is Appendices.

The Chapter for on preventing identity theft is very short and is quite weak. For example the author recommends not having your address published in the local phone book, only your real name and number or paying for an unlisted number. Land line phones point to the addresses they are at so not having the address published is useless.

The author does mention that it is bad to put to much information on personal checks but does not mention the advantage of not putting your full name or address on the checks and never leaving the house with a check book.

He does mention that it is generally preferable to use a credit card rather than a debit card when initiating on-line purchase but does not explain why debit cards are more dangerous than credit cards and that it is safer to not have a debit card. Later on he talks about how ATM cards fall under the Electronic Funds Transfer Act but fails to mention how debit cards with a visa logo also fall under the EFTA.

He does not mention at all how to get off of junk mailing lists and why filling out warranty cards, answering surveys, and mailing in coupon information is bad.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Guide to Protecting Your Identity.......2004-01-23

Mr.May has written an easy to read practical guide for anyone to use in order to protect themselves from Identity Theft. Not only does he discuss different types of identity fraud, but he provides easy to follow instuctions on how to thwart the perpetrator.
The first thing I did after finishing this book was to purchase a good shredder. Now I always make sure the waitress has the credit card receipt rather then leaving it on the restaurant table. In my opinion, this book can be looked upon as a catalyst to developing a mindset geared to protecting our most precious asset, our identity.

5 out of 5 stars Just What We Need!.......2002-11-06

In a brief and to the point book, Johnny May has identified how to prevent theft happening to yourself! This book is not only easy to read, it is also extremely informative. It provides the reader with a hands-on approach to AVOIDING being victimized. Johnny has given the public common sense ideas when addressing theft issues as well as ways to prevent theft that we should be doing but aren't. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to live a calmer, safer life.

5 out of 5 stars Solutions: Not just the problem.......2002-10-08

This subject matter had been on my mind and I picked up the book The Guide to Identity Theft Prevention. It provided a reference point with factual data relative to the problem and the changes in society that fuel the escalation of identity theft. What I particularly appreciated was the contact information and the Prevention Strategies.
