    Book Description

This major new text provides an introduction to the interaction of culture and society with the landscape and environment. It offers a broad-based view of this theme by drawing upon the varied traditions of landscape interpretation, from the traditional cultural geography of scholars such as Carl Sauer to the "new" cultural geography which has emerged in the 1990s.

      Book Description

In Modern Arnis: The Filipino Art of Stick Fighting, Remy Presas covers a variety of preparatory stretches and warm-up exercises, the 12-zone striking and defense systems, hand-to-hand combat ("trapping hands"), flow-practice drills, sinawali and redonda.

In this 160-page, fully illustrated text, Presas simplifies some of his teachings in order to give novices a tangible amount of self-defense skill through specific drills. For example, the sinawali is taught without sticks, in empty-hand fashion, to illustrate how its weaving motions can be easily translated into empty-hand movements for blocking, punching and takedowns. He discusses the 12 important angles of attacks on the human body, 12 basic ways of dealing with each angle plus stick and sword disarming techniques.

      4 out of 5 stars A good introduction.......2007-09-26

This is a good introduction to the system. It is unfortunate that master martial artists have not worked with professional writers to produce detailed volumes chronicling their systems. This, like most works of its kind- leaves the advanced student wishing MORE had been written.

The book will be informative to the beginner of Modern Arnis and a source of fond nostalgia for advanced students who know that this great man taught us all so much MORE than the pages of this book contain.

      5 out of 5 stars A brief comment.......2005-09-12

Now over 20 years old, this was one of the first books in English on escrima. At just over 150 pages and with 9 chapters covering the different topics, Guru Presas packs much good information into this small book. Many of the most important topics and skills are covered, and the photos and decriptions are clear and easy to understand. Although I have a more recent edition, the photos are still clear and not too dark or too light, as sometimes happens with the plates with older books. Close-ups are used when needed to show the details of hand positions. There is also a brief history of escrima at the beginning of the book.

Nowadays videos have in many ways replaced books as instructional materials in the martial arts, but video was still relatively new when this book was written, and it still stands on its own as one of the best early treatments of escrima. To see the actual movements, though, there is really nothing like a video, many of which are available used on the web for less than the price of the book. But books on the martial arts can still serve a useful purpose by discussing more technical matters such as theory, strategy, and topics like history, and perhaps as as catalogs and references for the techniques of a particular style.

Among Guru Presas's many legendary abilities, he was perhaps best known for his ability to perform disarms, and this is covered in the last chapter of the book, in addition to hand techniques, flow drills, trapping, the various single and double stick techniques, and other topics.

I have to mention that I had an opportunity to do a demo for Guro Presas back in the mid-80s with my teacher of Chinese Chin Na, the Kung Fu holding and locking art. As you probably know Guro Presas is also skilled in the Filipino version of this art, and was also a champion in Dumog, or Filipino wrestling and grappling, when he was younger. He enjoyed our demo and was very impressed with my master, Sifu Tony Ho, and his skill.

I am also a certified instructor in Kali/Escrima through the Ted LucayLucay lineage under Chuck Gonzaga, and have studied Serrada Escrima in addition to Kali. Chuck is a great martial artist himself and I am proud to be one of his students and instructors, and to have had the honor to demo for Guro Presas many years ago when I was still a young martial artist.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Arnis for the Beginner, Good text for the Advanced.......2004-01-01

This is a great book. My Jeet Kune Do instructor and I had the privelage of meeting Remy at a seminar he was conducting in NC. Needless to say Remy was a priceless instructor and it shows in this text. Mr. Presas conveys the information of stickfighting in an easy to understand format. While this book may have some age on it now, it has invaluable tools for the modern day martial artist.

In addition, if you enjoy studying lineages, histories, and influences of other martial arts, this is also a good book. I always knew that other martial artists would pull from other martial arts, but I had never actually "seen" or read it. As a student in Self Defense Systems Jeet Kune Do I automatically picked up on all the trapping hands influences from Filipino Martial Arts found in our system. You can also see the influence Filipino Trapping hands had on Bruce Lee as well and the slight changes he made in taking them as his own. Regardless of your style, modern or traditional, with an open attitude and a desire to learn, there is alot to take away from this simply constructed and well thought out book. I recommend this book for the non-martial artists alike.

          Book Description

The Concise Rules of APA Style offers essential writing and formatting standards for students, teachers, researchers, and clinicians in the social and behavioral sciences. This easy-to-use pocket guide, compiled from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, provides complete guidance on the rules of style that are critical for clear communication. Readers will learn how to avoid the grammatical errors most commonly reported by journal editors; how to choose the appropriate format for statistics, figures, and tables; how to credit sources and avoid charges of plagiarism; and how to construct a reference list through a wide variety of examples and sources.

How does the Concise Rules differ from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association? The Publication Manual remains the best source for broad background information about scientific publishing. It provides guidance on designing research, identifying the parts of a scholarly article, understanding the process of journal publication, and submitting articles for publication. The Concise Rules, by comparison, targets only those rules writers need for choosing the best words and format for their articles. It offers a comprehensive list of essential writing standards in a convenient, easily retrievable format.

In addition to guidance on grammar points that have challenged writers in the social sciences, the Concise Rules provides suggestions for reducing bias in language; reviews the mechanics of style for punctuation, spelling, capitalization, abbreviation, italicization, headings, and quotations; examines the preferred use of numbers as well as standards for metrication and statistics; provides guidance for the construction and formatting of tables, figures, and appendixes; and offers clear examples and models for referencing ideas and constructing error-free reference lists.

Available in a light-weight, spiral-bound format, the Concise Rules will travel easily from home to school to office.

5 out of 5 stars Concise Rules of APA Style.......2007-10-13

This is an essential book if you're preparing papers that must follow APA style. It's official from APA, so you can count on the content. More detailed than a quick guide. The spiral binding makes it easy to use. If my 'easy way' guide doesn't have the answer, this concise guide does. Wouldn't be without it. Why didn't my uni profs tell me about this cheaper resource??? (The full-length guide costs about twice as much, if I remember correctly.)

I thought this would be a more helpful book than the APA Publication Manual, but I was wrong. This small volume does not cover enough items that I need to write a graduate level paper. I suggest purchasing only the Publication Manual.

good reference for research papers, only wished it had better examples easier to locate instead of having to read every chapter to search for format.

David Frye's skillful translation and abridgment of Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala's monumental First New Chronicle and Good Government (composed between 1600 and 1616) offers an unprecedented glimpse into pre-colonial Inca society and culture, the Spanish conquest of Peru (1532-1572), and life under the corrupt Spanish colonial administration. An Introduction provides essential historical and cultural background and discusses the author's literary and linguistic innovations. A map, a glossary of terms, and seventy-five of Guaman Poma's ink drawings are also included.

                    Book Description

Simon is a 35-year-old, out-of-work New Age mythologist who inadvertently always ends up working for scam artists. When he lands a job with a company that sells platinum-plated golf putters, all goes well until his rival, another salesman at the company, turns up dead with a platinum-plated golf putter rammed down his throat and all the evidence points to Simon. Trying to solve the murder, Simon enlists the help of his Grandma Louise, a channeler from Venice Beach, as well as a Druid rune caster, an astrologer, and the ghost of a famous pro golfer. Using spiritual clues and his knowledge of mythology and ancient Eastern religions, Simon baffles detectives who can't understand how he stays one step ahead of them.

Daniel B. Brawner lives in Iowa.

4 out of 5 stars Filled with characters, as in "unusual people".......2005-03-13

This is a wild and crazy murder mystery. Simon is a man with a dubious employment history who suddenly finds himself in a job competition with a hard-driving opponent named Steve. They are rivals for a sales job for a company that sells platinum headed golf putters. To his surprise, Simon proves to be a better salesperson than Steve is, although there appears to be something odd about the company. Simon's friends strongly encourage him to leave the company, but he is captured by capitalism. The lure of having money for bills and frills keeps him in the game when his heart tells him that he may pay for it in the end.
Steve is suddenly murdered and Simon is the prime suspect. This introduces some of the most stereotypically dumb cops to ever appear in a murder story and members of an Asian crime gang. When Simon's fortunes are at their lowest, he receives help from the ghost of the great golfer Ben Hogan. The following is typical of their conversations.

                    Simon: "You're my spirit guide?"
Hogan: "Well, I used to be a professional golfer. But since I died, I've had to retrain."

Simon is also reasonably proficient in Hinduism and Buddhism, so aspects of those religions are fundamental aspects of the plot. There are many amusing aspects of the story; one of my favorites was the golf course built on top of an old landfill, so there is the occasional burst of methane from underground. In second place is Simon's cat Cayce, who is quite literate, talking freely with Simon and Hogan. He is named for Edgar Cayce; a psychic who was called "The Sleeping Prophet."
There are so many characters in the book that I was overwhelmed in trying to keep track of all of them. Most have so many pronounced idiosyncrasies that the solution to the murder is almost reduced to a secondary aspect of the story. Certainly this is not a typical murder mystery, and some people who enjoy them will not find this one to their taste. The best way to describe this book is quirky, funny although requiring some thought and loaded with characters where the term is defined as "unusual people."

5 out of 5 stars amusing amateur sleuth .......2004-09-01

In his thirties, Simon wants to prove to the parents of his beloved Amy that he can be a responsible person so the New Age mythologist obtains a job working as a sales trainee at the Bulgarian-American owned Going Platinum, a golf club supplier. His friend Kerry tells him to forget this employment stuff because whenever Simon gains work the FBI follows as the firms are always are pulling scams. Simon takes the job and competes with Steve Merritt for a permanent position.

Shockingly, Simon sells more than Steve, who is obviously the better salesman as ethics do not faze him when it comes to making a sale. Unbeknownst to Simon, his sales are pre-arranged because he is actually abetting a smuggling ring. When Steve turns up dead with a putter rammed down his throat Simon makes inquiries even as Amy wants him to quit. With help from a team of misfits including a ghost, Simon makes inquiries using out of body investigative techniques even as Amy threatens to leave him. Although he would do almost anything for his Amy, Simon must restore mythological equilibrium if he is to feel worthy of his beloved

Readers who appreciate a weird hero will want to read this amusing amateur sleuth tale starring a person who beats to a different drum. The murder and crimes are developed around Simon's simple lifestyle like his delightful first encounter with his future in-laws who redefine what he says to fit their prototype for a successful male. Daniel B. Brawner delights readers with a unique tale starring a distinctive protagonist.

                      Book Description

During the period from 1900 to 1936 Aborigines in the south west of Western Australia experienced profound changes in their way of life and their status in the wider community. At the turn of the century most were economically independent; living in the bush, on station land, or their own small farming blocks they found some degree of acceptance. By the early 1930s however they had been reduced to the status of second-class citizens subject to bursts of overt racism.

This book examines the interconnected factors contributing to a bureaucratic process of pauperisation, institutionalisation and exclusion from the wider community with its associated effects on the Aborigines' status and their way of life.

                        Book Description

This book explores how governments, militaries and institutions respond to cosmopolitan debates about solidarity and the use of force to defend distant strangers against tyranny and the abuse of human rights. In a series of case studies, the book explores the normative, political and operational consequences for military forces of the proposition that they can and perhaps should be used in pursuit of cosmopolitan values and objectives.
