Great stories with detailed analysis of what went wrong.......2007-09-13

This book is loaded with well told, detailed stories of paddling gone awry. Each story is followed by an instructive analysis of the situation--how the paddlers misjudged the conditions, how they might have avoided equipment failure, what training might have helped the situation, etc. It's all laid out in very practical terms that you could put to use yourself. Amongst the stories are numerous sidebars with more information on techniques and equipment that are also useful, but much drier. My only criticism is that the book has not been updated. Most of the stories are from the mid-eighties and while the principles of kayaking haven't changed, available equipment continues to evolve. In summary, a fun book to read full of useful information for any sea kayaker.

Good Information, Out of date stories. .......2007-03-17

The stories in this book had some real value to them and any beginner would see the value in reading about the unfortunate disasters of others. However, I was disappointed that most of the recent events talked about happened between 1984 thru 1994, almost 13-23 years ago. Sea Kayaking has come a long way since then, but none the less, the events the book talks about are important valuable lessons to those beginners just starting out in the sport.

Lessons are not hard to learn.......2006-08-08

Deep trouble recounts the stories and reports of 20 kayaking incidents which range from death (often with sketchy information as you would imagine) to mild hypothermia to extraordinary feats of endurance and survival.

Unfortunately I found a majority of the incidents were the result of either total novices `in over their heads' or total stupidity. Kayaking in shorts and a tee shirt in 10degrees water and 20knot winds with no pfd; the lessons are not hard to learn. Also many of the lessons from each incident were the same, how many times should we read to dress for immersion and wear a pfd?

However, of the 20 cases presented, one or two were noteworthy, others included elements of interest, and some of the comments from the `pros' was useful.

The formatting - which includes simultaneous commentary with the incident report - didn't work for me at all (others report here that they like it, go figure).

I expected more from this book (I have always wanted to read 'Total Loss' the equivalent book about sailing) but it just wasn't aimed at me. The target audience must be novice kayakers who don't wear a pfd; if you are in that audience buy this book.

A guide of what not to do........2006-08-05

If you are new to this sport or an experienced paddler, this book can provide valuable insight on how to stay out of trouble and what to do, or not do if you find yourself in trouble.

As a newby kayaker, I find this book to be highly
useful, if a bit intimidating. Hopefully, by reviewing
these incidents, I can be less of a potential danger
to myself and burden to others.

One negative: the quality of the binding of this book is
truly abysmal. It literally disintegrated in my hands
as I was reading it.

there are better books on characterization.......2005-02-07

Unlike her book, Making a Good Script Great, this book is disappointing. Creating characters involves: "getting the first idea..., creating the first broad strokes, finding the core of the character...finding the paradoxes within the character..., adding emotions, attitudes, and values, adding details to make the character specific and unique" (p.23). These steps are then elaborated in separate chapters (although the elaboration consists mostly of extended examples of films most people--those who actually saw the films--would consider to be mixed bags at best, long series of autobiographical paragraphs, and extended quotes from screenwriters ruminating about their experiences in writing this or that character). Seldom is information actually added to that already given on page 23.
There are also chapters on backstory--use backstory only when you have to (p.56), minor characters, dialogue--"bad dialogue is difficult to speak...all characters sound alike...spells out every thought...simplifies people instead of revealing their complexity" (p.151), and nonrealistic characters. Also a chapter on avoiding stereotypes and other character problems such as unlikable characters and vague characters.

There is only enough actual information in the book to fill an article; but if you are a beginning screenwriter, this book (and many others) can be a help to you. The thing to be careful of is (a) emulating writing from movies that most viewers were lukewarm about. You want to learn the best techniques, not the mediocre ones. And (b) thinking that if you've read this book, you know all you need to know about characterization. You don't. Far from it.

Finally, Good Characters.......2004-10-06

Before I read this book, I have to admit - my characters were all pretty lame. Then, hey, I read this book, and boom! Ok, so they still need work, but this book made me understand how to keep characters exotic, good, and believable.
The first part of this book didn't interest me as much, because it was advising on how to make sure your characters are good on their background - of people who live in this world. This wasn't 'really' helpful for me, because I write fantasy in other worlds, but I picked up a few helpful things.
Then came a section on Dialogue, which was good too - at the time I was reading it I didn't realize it, I thought it was a bit dull, but then I realized I had started taking the advice unconciously.
But then came along the next part of the book, and I could hardly wait to pick it up each time. It explains greatly how to make sure your characters aren't hollow, and how they should respond in situations according to their attitudes and past life.
This book I highly recommend to any author who feels his characters aren't to their full potential (or if they don't want to admit that, this book was fun to read as well).

A great "How To" for new and experienced Writers.......2004-07-04

"Creating Unforgettable Characters" succeeds in giving practical steps in the development of character. The book covers several disciplines like psychology, acting, backstory and relationships in an effort to refine and inform the way you approach your characters. For more experienced writers looking to drill down rewrites, the digestible 'get to the freakin' point' style of the book helps you get to what you need, instead of wasting your time lording over topics you don't give shlip about (if I could only take a minute of life away from every author who's wasted my time patting themselves on the back for their puddling observations... there'd be a lot of dead folks in LA).

Particularly useful are the summarizations and categorical exercises at the end of each chapter, helping you immediately implement the lesson into your writing. There are also frequent exercises throughout the book to help jog your mind in relation to your characters.

Seger gives special attention to minor, supporting and nonrealistic characters which populate every script, but are often neglected. Seger's not asking for every character to be the central figure of your narrative... but they better be the central figure of their own story in some way. The book helps in creating characters, small and large, that have a reason for being. It's easy to neglect lesser characters, when they should be poignant and relevant.

Thankfully, Seger has the 'How' mentality that is missing from so many other books on writing. If you are new to writing, this is an excellent resource for illuminating all the elements that go into making a fully fleshed out character. If you're an experienced writer and are looking for a way to make your characters 'pop' off the page a bit more, "Creating Unforgettable Characters" could help you find that edge.

Unforgettable.......2003-10-12

This book is phenomenal for nearly any writer, because of the wide range of characters Seger uses as examples. She offers sage advice on making your characters unique and leaving a lasting effect on the reader/viewer. Readers of this book will undoubtly recognize every character referenced from movies, television and novels.

Great Read.......2004-03-05

Dead Time/El tiempo muerto is a somber novel. It is easy to understand and keeps your attention. The main character is complex, and you learn more about him as the novel progresses. While the novel seems to have an overall feeling of sadness, there are parts that display other ranges of emotions that the main character goes through. Overall, a good book for anyone who enjoys reading. I recommend it also to anyone who is learning the Spanish language---read it first in English, then try the Spanish section.

Tiempo muerto se sirve de las voces entrelazadas de varios narradores para explorar los rincones más escondidos de papabuelo, un inmigrante afro-británico en la República Dominicana maltratado por la vida y por los años que huye de su soledad. Aunque la vida de papabuelo está llegando a su fin, sus recuerdos permanecen vivos en su nieta, Mariita, y con esta tranquilidad el alma de papabuelo puede por fin descansar. La lucha imposible de papabuelo por conseguir un lugar en la sociedad dominicana, y por extensión, la lucha de todos los cocolos como él, que para muchos pudiera parecer tiempo muerto, se rescata del olvido gracias a este emotivo y enigmático homenaje.

Excellent writing and fascinating history.......2005-12-08

Tiempo Muerto by Avelino Stanley takes place in the Dominican Republic during the 20th century. This book is extremely well written and draws it's readers into the stories from the very beggining. There are essentially five short stories fragmented and strung together which jointly weave a tale of people who are fragmented from one another but also are connected through the character of Papabuelo. Papabuelo is a "cocolo" which is a derrogatory term for afro-caribean immigrants who speak english in the Dominican Republic. Through the recounting of his story, those of his family, and those of others remotely connected to him, a picture of life in the Dominican Republic over an extensive period of time is portrayed. From Papabuelo's arrival at the sugar cane fields, which varied very little from the conditions of slavery, to life under the dictator Trujillo's regime, to being poor in the contemporary Dominican republic. Against this historically interesting background the stories of these people lives is set. I would reccomend this as a novel, but also as an interesting piece to be studied for it look at life in the Dominican republic over the last century.

Emotionally intense and captivating!!!!!!.......2005-12-08

In Tiempo Muerto, Avelino Stanley intertwines five short stories related by a series of multiple narrators. Progressively, they celebrate the ethnicity of the cocolos, a pejorative term for Afro-British immigrants who lived in the Dominican Republic, and suffered from harsh discrimination. The story begins from the point of view of papabuelo (grandfather), a cocolo who recalls his tempestuous life as a worker in the sugar cane fields. More voices join papabuelo's in order to compile a magnificent account of their more than thrilling interrelated lives. Winner of the National Prize for Best Novel in 1997, this book is a valuable tool for Post-Colonial and Multicultural studies.
